Oh my gosh I thought I'd posted this yesterday. Anyway here you go, enjoy!
Kenji watched as Ogashira furiously scratched Shinoda's name off their list of suspects. "Nothing," she said. "All these months and we're no closer to finding out who built those damn transmitters than when we started!"
"Are we even sure it was an inside job? Maybe someone else developed-"
"Who else even had the groundwork to do build something like that?!" she snapped, a rarity from the usually stoic woman. "The AMF had the most data on kaiju, especially their minds. The only equivalent is the American AMF and all scientists with the requisite expertise were already cleared. They checked." Her shoulders slumped. "I suppose it is possible someone found it independently…but how I don't know."
"I mean, lost technology is discovered all the time isn't it? Maybe they found an old research database with surviving records."
"Then why haven't any other old AMF weapons surfaced?" she said. She sighed and waved him away. "From now on, I'll handle the investigation on my own. I will call you if you're needed. Until then, focus on studying Godzilla."
Kenji straightened. "Yes ma'am!"
That didn't mean he wouldn't try and do a little digging on his own time if he found something. However, whatever they found, it seemed whoever was behind the transmitters truly had nothing to do with Shinzo Mifune.
Mifune grinned as he continued writing his notes and imputing calculations. Yes, he had a proof of concept with Megaguirus, but he needed more. Something bigger. Something that could truly control one for long periods of time. These kaiju will bow to me.
The door opened.
"I told you not to disturb me!" he barked.
"Sorry Professor, just thought you might like to know that the Red Bamboo's payment has gone through. My associates have already cashed it in."
Mifune beamed. "Perfect!" He pulled out a piece of paper and handed it to X. "This is the equipment I need for my project."
"Alright. May I see the plans?"
Mifune's gaze hardened. "Not until I give them to you. I and I alone know how to make this machine at the moment."
X held his stare for several seconds before throwing up a hand and saying, "Alright, keep your secrets. I'll get this ready."
"And the transmitter."
X bared his teeth in what was almost a smile. "Almost completed. This is going to fun."
Ochako leaned against a piece of concrete, exhausted after another long day. Nearby, she saw Midori approaching. "Hey Midori. How was work in the AMF?"
"The group here needed more repairs and resupplying than we thought. We'll be waiting here another day or two."
Ochako frowned. "Was the battle that hard on them?"
He grimaced. "Some of the newbies tried to attack during the brawl."
Ochako winced. "How many?"
"Actual casualties? Relatively few. However, many got too close to the fighting and had their tanks damaged by rubble."
Ochako nodded. "They should be glad Hatsume didn't build those. She'd have a conniption fit if one of us damaged her babies."
Midori tilted his head. "Babies?"
"It's what she calls her inventions."
"Oh. That sounds like one of the early AMF developers. He had an obsession with drills and wanted to put them on everything…" Midori proceeded to ramble for two solid minutes. Ochako waited patiently for him to finish, smiling all the while. By the end Midori paused and said, "Was I rambling?"
She nodded. "Yes, but that's fine. I missed listening to those."
He smiled, scratching the back of his neck. "Thanks. It hasn't been the same since you left. Sometimes I wish you'd stayed. But you're also an amazing Hero…"
Now it was her turn to be embarrassed. "You'd say that no matter what!" she said. However, his comment reminded her, "Say Midori, you still spar?"
He blinked. "Yeah, why?"
She grinned.
A few minutes later the two were alone in one of the local Hero Agencies' sparring rooms. Fortunately, this Agency was relatively intact, aside from the two meter hole in the roof. Ochako took her fighting stance near the edge of the mat.
"You sure you want me to fight you?" said Midori. "You have a lot more practice fighting hand to hand than me. Another Hero might-"
"No. If you're that rusty that just means I'll finally be able to definitively beat you," she said, taking off her Urarakawrists and donning some gloves.
"Are you still mad about all those times I won back in the day?"
"Yes." She took up a fighting stance.
"Alright." Midori's expression firmed. He took up a stance of his own.
For several seconds, the two watched each other, slowly circling like a sort of dance. Then they attacked. Midori dashed at Ochako while she did the same. However, Midori then came to a sudden stop in front of her, forcing Ochako to flail to the side to avoid colliding with him. In that moment, Ochako barely avoided a jab from him and leaped away. She retook her stance while he did the same.
Ochako considered her approach. He was being more careful than before. However…
Ochako threw a punch. He blocked, but she grabbed his arm, using it as leverage to deliver a powerful kick to the torso. Midori grunted. Ochako then punched him, followed by another two kicks. However, Midori blocked her second kick and shoved her back. Midori seemingly feinted a punch, then, when she let her guard down, punched her for real. Ochako staggered from the blow. A follow-up punch to the stomach sent her reeling back. Ochako barely somersaulted away to avoid another kick.
Ochako twirled around, hitting Midori with a back kick. She grabbed him and tried to put him in a hold. Midori wrapped his arm around her back, lifting her off the ground before trying to drop her to the floor. Before he could, Ochako slithered out of his grasp and kicked his leg out.
Midori's leg crumpled, but he managed to grab Ochako's arm and throw her over his shoulder. She landed on the ground with a hard thud. She sent a desperate palm strike that got him to back off long enough for her to quickly crawl away.
Both got to their feet. Despite panting, Ochako's felt a lightness. He really was keeping his skills up. Unfortunately, he was also definitely stronger than her. On the other hand, she was still better than him.
They attacked again, this time with Ochako going on the offensive. She landed several blows and kicks, and even got him on the ground a couple times. However, he managed to hold his own, even driving her back. Her blows landed more, but his landed harder.
Ochako then went on the defensive. He attacked more aggressively, landing a hard punch to her cheek. Fortunately, this made him reckless, allowing her to sweep his legs and put him in a hold. He threw her off, but she managed to kick him in the chest.
Now both were panting. They were about to launch at each other again when Midori looked behind Ochako, confused. Ochako backed away and sidestepped to see what, if anything, he was looking at.
Eri stood in the doorway, looking embarrassed at interrupting. "S-sorry!" she said. "I finished classes and wanted to see you! About my internship!"
"It's fine," Ochako said, taking off her gloves and putting her Urarakawrists back on. "Midori, meet Eri. She's my new intern."
"You're taking on an intern?" Midori said, "That's amazing!" Turning to Eri he said, "What's your quirk?"
Eri said, "Where'd you get the notebook?"
Ochako glanced and sure enough, Midori had a notebook in hand. Midori himself looked mildly confused at the question. Ochako then shrugged at Eri, who in turn seemed to decide it was best not to ask further.
After giving Midori a short explanation of her quirk, Rewind (which can apparently rewind living matter, and even restore limbs), Midori said, "That's amazing! Wait, is that why they sent us to see you after Tokyo?"
Ochako raised her brow. She didn't know about that.
Eri said. "Oh right. They had me fix a lot of you AMF guys' cells from all that radiation you've been near. How much did you need repaired?"
"Not much I hope," Ochako growled under her breath, getting Midori to sheepishly laugh.
Eri then said to Midori, "You're a pretty good fighter. You'd beat most of my classmates in a quirkless spar, even if you didn't have the advantage of being an full-grown adult."
"Thanks," Midori said, looking embarrassed.
"She's not kidding Midori," Ochako said. "With a little more experience you'd be on par with me again."
"I wouldn't say that," Midori said, "Besides, you were fighting without your quirk."
"And you weren't using any weapons," said Ochako, knowing full well he knew how to use tools ranging from bo staffs to guns.
Eri raised her hand, "My dad says we need to know quirkless and quirked combat just in case! No Hero is a one-trick pony."
"Your dad's a smart man," Ochako said.
Eri blushed and tried to hide her face inside the capture weapon she wore as a scarf. "Thanks. He taught me how to fight since I was very young."
Midori's phone beeped. He checked it and said, "I have to go. Something came up."
Ochako nodded. Midori then turned and said, "Nice meeting you Eri."
"Nice meeting you two sir," she said.
Midori then walked out, leaving Ochako with her intern.
Eri turned to Ochako and stood stiff as a board. "What do you want us to do? Ma'am!"
Ochako laughed. "You don't need to be so stiff with me. You're almost as bad as I was when I first joined Nejire."
Eri smiled. "She used to babysit me. How is she?"
Ochako's smile faded. "She's handling herself. I'm going to see her tomorrow. You can come along if you'd like."
Eri's expression firmed. "I would. I want to see how she is. And if I missed any injuries."
"Missed any-" Ochako stopped. "You're the one who saved her, aren't you?"
Eri looked aside and idly kicked the ground. "My quirk was the only one powerful enough to heal both her burns and radiation poisoning. Even Katsuma's probably wouldn't be enough."
Ochako bowed to her intern and said, "Thank you then. I don't know what I would have done if they hadn't had you there"
"I was just doing my job! You don't need to thank me! Honest!" Eri said, flailing her hands like Ochako used to in her early days.
"Alright," Ochako said. She looked back at the training room she was already in. "As for what we're going to do for our internship, I need to get a good grasp of your skills. So…" she got into a fighting stance. "You said you knew how to fight. Show me what you can do. No quirks for the first round. Then quirks for the second."
Eri smiled and got into a fighting stance. Her expression firmed. The girl grew absolutely still. Then, like a cobra, she struck.
"Another day in the AMF, huh Midoriya?" said Akiba as they got into their masers.
"It sure is," he said.
"Just please don't make it an exciting day in the AMF," said Belu-be. He would be joining them while their third maser tank was being serviced.
"You're in the wrong group for that," said Akiba.
"Says the one who called my old team the "Pequod Squad"," Belu-be said.
"Fair enough."
The group got in their masers and set off. Soon they reached a village on the outskirts of town. They slowly drove their masers forward, following a flashing point on their readouts. Above ground nothing could be detected except the occasional tremor.
Then, Belu-be said, "Breach."
"Where-never mind. I see it," said Akiba.
Sure enough, the ground on the side of a hill broke, sending tons of earth sliding away. A red reptile with a doglike face, ears, and a rhino's horn crawled out of the earth, letting out a loud roar.
"Hold," Izuku said. "We're just watching. But be ready to attack if it gets too close to the village."
Baragon lumbered forward, ignoring the village in favor of a small farm, which had been evacuated an hour ago. Nearby, infantry units tracked the beast as well, trailing it under the maser's watchful eye. They all watched as the creature ate some of the livestock, then, noticing the watching tanks, let out a defiant roar.
Izuku put his finger on the trigger. Baragon opened its mouth and unleashed a blast of fire between itself and the AMF. In the brief flash of light and smoke, it vanished, replaced by a large hole in the ground.
Underground sonar tracked him heading away from the populated areas, back toward the mountains. Underground drill units followed, but did not engage. There was no need at the moment.
"Target gone sir," said Belu-Be.
Izuku nodded. "Return to base,"
"Yes sir," said Akiba.
"No suicidal plans today?" said Belu-be. "Must be my lucky day."
"Please," said Akiba. "Like Sakaki didn't give you those too."
"All the time. Hence why not having one is a lucky day," said Belu-Be. "That reminds me. Midoriya?"
"Yes?"
"I'm visiting Yuko tomorrow to help her move some furniture. If you have time, could you come too? I could use the help, plus she wants to see you. You were one of the only AMF soldiers Haruo actually respected, hard as it is to believe."
Izuku blinked. "Ok? Sure." He couldn't help but be a bit confused though. Tani was closest to Ochako than him. Sure, Izuku befriended Haruo in those final days, but he barely spoke with her. Nevertheless, he supposed he'd get his answer tomorrow.
In the sea
Tsu piloted an experimental submersible in the shallows, checking its instruments and sending the occasional report on its performance. She had been asked to test this thing both for publicity, and because she was genuinely skilled with submersibles. Besides, if something went wrong, they hoped Tsu's quirk might allow her to flood the sub and swim out, given that the pressure wasn't high enough for a full implosion. She'd probably get the bends, but she might live.
"How's it going Froppy?"
"Good Sirius. No problems yet.
"Good. The guys up here say we're done. Bring her up."
"I will-wait." Something showed up on the sonar screen. On the next blip it was closer. And it was huge.
Tsu began driving the submersible out of the way. She turned on her lights to get a better look.
A large yellow eye glared from the gloom. Tsu snapped off her light and banked wildly to the side, barely avoiding the reptilian head moving past her sub. The yellow eye glanced at her before looking ahead, the massive dinosaur paying little heed to her as it swam along its way.
The creature let out a quick grunt, sending reverberations through the hull. Turbulence from the creature's passing slammed into the submersible, forcing Tsu to place one hand and both feet on the sides, using her quirk to avoid being thrown. With her remaining hand, Tsu gripped the controls and tried desperately to move out of the way.
Tsu only barely avoided the creature's broad shoulders. Then only by fortune wasn't accidentally swatted by its tail, which was as thick as a subway.
Tsu clutched her chest, hyperventilating as the monster disappeared into the gloom. It was only after a couple minutes that she was able to take deep breaths and slow her racing heart.
"Tsu?! Tsu!" Sirius said. "Answer me dammit! What was that thing on the sonar? Are you still down there? TSU!"
"I'm here," Tsu said. "I'm here." She took several breaths. Finally, she said,
"Alert the AMF. I found Godzilla."
Writing that scene with Tsu was so fun.
Also, I did not expect Eri to have that much Izuku in her (especially when she barely knows the actual Izuku)
Hope you enjoyed! Comments and kudos make me smile!
