Makoto Nanaya, a woman who is searching for someone who the world has forgotten. Relius Clover, a man searching for the key to his magnum opus. Two individuals with different goals doing the same thing. However the focus remains on Makoto as after a night of craziness and booze, She's finally refreshed to go for her goal. But before she could think to do such a thing, she received a call from Caroline, a friend/employee of her lover who tells her that she was currently being watched…
CAROLINE POV
A few minutes ago…
God mornings suck. All I want to do on a day like this is just to sleep and make sure my brain is well rested before I continue to do any kind of science. But unfortunately I can't do that due to the fact that all the good deals for the materials I need for the rev system are at the morning. So here I am sacrificing my precious sleep for the search of materials to improve my own creation. The Rev system… it's been so long since I created that system.
Truth be told, if the Boss didn't pick it up a long time ago I wouldn't have given up on the Rev System a long time ago. The Rev System was originally something I had on the prototyping stages a long time ago, what was to be my life's work, the goal I strive to achieve before I officially retire as a scientist. The short explanation of it is that it's a system that stores the Seithr that is all around us into a more condensed element, allowing for later use. It's a way to turn the excess seithr around us into a sort of renewable resource.
Now Why would I want to do something like that? I could say that I want to change the world and help make the lower levels actually inhabitable. But in actual reality, I am doing it for my own self satisfaction and isn't that enough as a scientist? To experiment and create because we want to change the world and how people understand it? Now of course I would be sad if the Rev System gets weaponized but now I think about it, that's the natural process of the world
Whenever new technology was discovered/created, people always found ways to weaponize it. When nuclear power was discovered, it was used for fancy things like glassware that glowed and then power plants. It didn't take long before mankind started lobbing them at each other in the form of nuclear weapons. But that's the fate of any technology if it is used indiscriminately, to be turned into weapons of war.
I don't want that for my tech. Am I being idealistic when I say this? Maybe but I truly just want to help people in the first place. I understand that this world is not kind to people with ideologies like me so that is why I resolved myself to create those weapons myself. I will be the first and only person with knowledge of the Rev System. I plan to keep the rev system with me until the day I die to prevent my beloved system from falling into the hands of those who create war.
But god… to think that I would be this tired that I would start thinking about stuff like this again… got to get what I am looking for before I start narrating my whole past to the voices in my head. As I made my way through the crowds of people, I decided to change my outfit a bit before I came here. A scientist wearing high heels in the middle of a street like this would be suicide so I decided to go with a full body biker suit with boots.
Finally, I made it to the store I was interested in, a black markets dealer shop. Normally they do their business in the morning and then leave by the afternoon to go and collect more stuff. You can find a wide assortment of weapons here ranging from the average knife and sword to some more elaborate things like a rare NOL fighter jet. However those are not what I am interested in. as I made my way deeper into the market, I finally found what I am looking for.
"Excuse me sir, Can I see the uranium you have on display?" I asked as I was face to face with my latest research item. The Rev system is easy to understand from the outside, it simply gathers or "Revs" the seithr around the area into a container and then is released at a more condensed and greater density, the Rev Arm/Blade is the working prototype of that concept in action. I even made a reverse flow system so that it could be used to help purge excess Seithr that might be in a person in the emergency that someone absorbed too much Seithr in their body.
While it's fighting power was something I never expected to come out from it, that was always the main goal of the Rev Blade/Arm. To be the test bed for the first part of the Rev System, the absorption phase. I now needed to find a way to store that Seithr for the second part of the Rev System, the actual storing phase. I tried storing the Seithr on it's own without any kind of compound and just putting it into a reactor but I found that it started making the Seithr a lot denser than I had intended.
If someone tried to store that much Seithr in a confined space without anything to keep it in check, it would just turn into a bomb and a ticking one at that. No I need to find a way to store the Seithr by breaking it down to something more molecular in scale. As the man brought out the uranium, it had been kept nicely in a metal box with a small viewing window. I peered into the window to look at the rather tiny rock, the size of a pearl.
"I know this is a stretch but is this really the biggest uranium you got?" I asked as the dealer sighed. "It's the only size I can find, most of the bigger uranium rocks have been seized by the NOL already and the only ones with the size you're looking for are in Nuclear missiles and those haven't been produced for the longest time." The Dealer responded as I bit my lips. Sure uranium this big would have sufficed but I want a bigger one because it would be easier to carve up to the shape I want. As the old saying goes, it's a lot easier to cut unwanted material than add material.
"How many other of these types of rocks do you have?" I asked as the man went back to the back to check on his stock before returning. "Only 3 left. I understand you want more but it's all I got. I'm sorry lady." The man replied as I sighed in defeat. As much as this hurts me, the one will have to do for now. "Then I will get this one. Market price." I said as I held out a card for the dealer to scan. Once he received his cash he brought the metal box back at the back and soon came back with something much easier to carry.
"The metal box is more of a precaution for the people who do try to take it. Here you go, your uranium." The dealer said as he handed me the uranium which was kept in a much smaller metal box the size of how one would keep a ring inside for the proposing to the person they love. I check to make sure it's the one I paid for and not one he had just swapped for and thankfully the man was someone who keeps his word.
"Thanks for doing business. I promise if anybody asks about you, I will give you a glowing review." I said in a bit of a cheeky manner as I left. Having secured the uranium I was after most people could see what I was going to use this uranium for. Yes, this is the item I am trying to test storing the Seithr in with. I don't know how well it's going to work but I just know that I had to try. All for the sake of realizing the Rev System with my own two hands.
My own two hands huh… to think that a few years ago I was just some lackey for some bigger hotshot scientists, their lab hands doing their work instead of being able to do mine. I still remember the days of that stupid cat not acknowledging my work with the prototype Rev Blade/Arm, calling it in her own words, "A clunky piece of junk that doesn't work any better than having a normal prosthetic arm attached instead. And a useless piece of junk were a leg version were to be created for it."
Gah just thinking about what she said that day to my face that day still makes my blood boil. A clunky piece of junk? Useless should a leg version be made? Does she really think I am that much of a fool to not realize what the flaws of the early prototypes were. Of course I understood them and I worked my ass of to create those prototypes regardless. I wanted her feedback on how to make them better not get my ass roasted and later fired because of that stupid cat bitch!
Of course you can get a normal prosthetic arm and it would function fine. Of course a normal prosthetic arm is more functional than an arm that can also become a weapon. And of course a leg version of the same thing would have been more useless than an actual leg prosthetic! But that was never my goal in the first place! All of those were just the prototypes to creating the Rev System, my true dream as a scientist!
If Mankind could have a portable power source that they can have on them at all times, then we wouldn't need Seithr generators anymore, we wouldn't need to worry about the lower levels and their toxic levels of Seithr anymore. Humanity can finally stop living in these mountains and finally repopulate the world below. A new age of mankind could be born! One where we aren't afraid of Seithr but can finally harness it for something good in this world!
I believed in this dream and I even went to the NOL to try and make it a reality. But to think my first day was also my last day. If it wasn't for the boss, the Rev System might never have made it this far… he saw the prototype and didn't hesitate at all. He was willing to help me all the way and that is all I can ask for. If it wasn't for him, I might not have have the strength and resolve today to see my dream through. I haven't seen him in a while but if I do, I should make sure that the second version of the Rev System is to his standards.
As I pat my face to cool down from the mini rant my brain had, I couldn't help but feel a pair of eyes looking down at me. I didn't know the exact location so I decided to try something. Pulling out my phone, I struck a pose and took a wide selfie picture of myself with my phone's camera. I then looked at it, making sure it was close to me to obscure the screen from anybody who could have been watching and saw something that caught my eye. Two figures standing high above something. Their clothes were hard to see but one person had red hair and the other blonde hair.
'I'm being followed?..' I thought as I shook my head. That would be dangerous to presume but just to be safe, I decided to walk a bit more further, getting something to eat for breakfast because I haven't had anything yet. Maybe the taste of food will help me to see that what I had seen was just a mere hunger pain. But as a I reach the food stalls, the sensation I felt never went away. I still feel like I am being stalked.
...It was then my phone rang, and I knew what I needed to do.
FLASHBACK END
"Being watched? Who do you think could be after you?" Makoto questioned as the moment she had heard that Caroline suspected she might be being followed, Makoto immediately entered business mode as Caroline tried to relax herself and make herself seem to be as normal as possible. "My two guesses, a random criminal organization who might be interested in my talents or the NOL who might be interested in me for my now well proven talents in science." Caroline explained as Makoto rubbed her forehead.
"Got a good look at who might be following you?" Makoto questioned as Caroline looked around for a bit as she made sure her movements were as natural as possible. "Not really. I took a selfie and all I saw was just blonde and red hair. But nothing in the form of uniform or outfits or anything." Caroline explained as Makoto bit her lips. Hair color is a good step but anybody could have blonde hair. Red Hair however only tells her two people could have that hair color.
"Listen Caroline. Better to play safe than sorry. Do you think you can lose the people following you right now?" Makoto asked as Caroline looked around her surroundings. She was a scientist and not a fighter so it was a good thing that Makoto was thinking about that at the very least. "I am currently in the food market district downtown. I brought some equipment with me just in case I needed to make a break from it." Caroline explained as Makoto's mind began to form a mental image of Otsu itself.
"Downtown… what kind of equipment do you have on you right now." Makoto questioned. "Just the standard escape tools, smoke grenades, flashbangs and a grappling hook gun though I doubt that it would be a good idea for a scientist like me to go swinging around high rise buildings." Caroline explained as this got Makoto's mind racing. "A grappling hook huh…. Do you think you can make your way to the square?" Makoto asked as Caroline looked around and assessed her own odds.
"I should be able to make it to Otsu Square." Caroline simply answered as she felt a pressure coming to her from behind. "Then let's meet up at Otsu Square. If anything happens, let's switch from phones to Ars Magus communication. Just in case." Makoto explained as Caroline agreed. Whiles phones still exist and are a way to communicate with people, Ars Magus Communication is not only easy to maintain, it allows the users to still have both hands just in case anything happens as Makoto and Caroline hung up their phone call.
As soon as she did so however, Caroline barely had the chance to activate Ars Magus communications when a hand was placed on her shoulder. "Excuse me Maam but are you Caroline Patricia Smith?" A voice, young and female asked as Caroline's mind was already racing. "And what if I am?" Caroline asked as she did not hesitate to reach for her biker suit's zipper. "Can you come with us for a bit. We want to talk to you for a bit if you don't mind."
The moment Caroline heard those words, that was her cue to get the hell out of there. In one swift motion, Caroline unzipped her biker suit until it was half way down and pulled out one of the flashbangs she hid inside the suit. If it wasn't for the full shirt she wore underneath the suit she would have been flashing the men of Otsu her breasts but she had the decency to be a proper woman at least as she slammed the flashbang hard on the ground and ran as fast as she could.
A blinding light engulfed the whole area as Caroline used sound canceling Ars Magus to silence herself as a series of loud ringing noises engulfed the area, disorientating her pursuers as she was now able to confirm that she had people stalking her for some reason. "Makoto! It's the worst case scenario, I'll meet you at the Square!" Caroline said as soon as she had her Ars Communicator out as she could feel the presence of two people chasing after her.
Her flashbang bought her some time but it clearly was not much as she did not dare look behind her, only focusing on the goal of getting away as she had to obstruct her pursuers in some way. Her eyes were able to catch onto the sight of a fish being sold by a vendor as she pulled out the grappling gun she had mentioned. This grappling gun was different from most because Caroline had modified it to be able to fire actual bullets while still being able to retain the grappling hook function in the form of a small mount akin to a flashlight.
She then fired her own creation's grappling hook, grabbing the basket of fish the man was showing to the customer and immediately activated the hook's pulling feature. In order for grappling hooks to function, the would need to be anchored into something so something like a basket of fish wouldn't result in Caroline being pulled towards said basked but instead fling the basket violently at her direction, spilling it's contents all behind her as she unhooked the grappling hook before it could slow her down as she could hear the loud sounds of fish hitting people at high speeds.
Without hesitating, she quickly popped a smoke grenade to obscure her pursuer's vision while they were still dealing with the mess of fish in front of them. Dropping it as soon as possible, Caroline continued on to her goal. Thanks to the fact she chose not to wear high heels, even a scientist like her would be able to run as fast as she could and not feel like her feet would break in the process. She simply focused herself to run at full speed. If she stopped, anybody could catch up to her since unfortunately she had the scientist stereotype of terrible physical ability.
And unfortunately, terrible physical ability was something that was making it difficult to lose her pursuers as she could hear footsteps running from behind again. 'God dammit! Can these guys just take a hint already!' Caroline thought as she saw an Otsunian wave their hand to her. "Just keep running! I got this!" The Otsunian said as Caroline simply smiled and ran past the Otsunian before she heard a large splash of water followed by what seemed to be slipping as more Otsunians realized that one of their own was in trouble.
"Over here! I know a shortcut!" An Otsunian boy said as Caroline followed the Otsunian boy into the series of alleyways that connected each district of Otsu. While it's commonly known that Otsunians handle problems amongst each other, what is not so well known is that if one of their own is in trouble with what seemed to be outsiders, they will immediately act to protect their own, as if asserting their own territory to the intruders.
"Where you heading to?!" The boy asked as Caroline panted. "The… Square...Please!" Caroline said as the boy looked around. "Just head down that alley! It will take you to the square quickly!" The boy said as Caroline nodded her head and gave the boy some cash for his trouble as she ran down the alley he told her about. Before she could exit the intricate series of alleys, a woman immediately obscured her way as she raised her hands out to block her way.
"Please stop running Miss Caroline! We just want to talk! And you're also in danger!" The woman said but Caroline was not having any of it. In fact, she could guess that the woman in front of her was the danger but before she could process any more, she immediately a hard tackle come from her behind as the person grabbed her from her waist and took her down to the ground. "Come on! Don't be so stubborn! We're trying to help you!" The person said as Caroline simply reacted on instinct.
Her instincts told her that this person was a man judging from the rough way he took her down, he was trying to use his body weight to keep her pinned down, most likely to give his female partner the chance to help in subduing her. Caroline quickly scanned her surroundings and saw some trash that she could use as she used the grappling hook to latch it right on a dumpster and immediately activated it's pulling function.
The weight of the dumpster was enough to pull both her and the man on top of her right towards said dumpster. The speed combined with the force from the man slamming body first into the dumpster plus Caroline's own weight was enough to knock the wind out of the man as Caroline pressed a button on her grappling hook to detach the current hook which had become lodged in the dumpster itself. This allowed her to stand up where she came face to face with the woman, having used the opportunity given to her by her male companion to close the gap.
Caroline did not hesitate to react to the danger placed in front of her and pulled the pin of another flashbang out and instead of releasing it immediately, she tossed it right at the feet of the woman. This caused the woman to react by trying to kick it away but that was what Caroline wanted as what she had tossed was actually a dud and a trick for the real flashbang to come flying right towards the woman's face, blinding her as Caroline ran past her, tackling her down to buy a bit more time and force the woman to try and recover.
"Caroline! Where are you right now!?" Makoto questioned as Caroline tapped the Ars Magus communicator. "I'm almost at the square, where should we meet up?" Caroline questioned as she reattached a new grappling hook on her grappling gun. "I'm thinking the abandoned NOL Building! Just head to the roof and meet me there!" Makoto said as Caroline thought about it and nodded her head. "Sure. I don't know if I will be able to make it to the roof but I will try. These guys are relentless!" Caroline answered as she turned her head around for the first time to see if she was being chased and for once there was nobody behind her much to her relief.
"Need to try...and catch my breath for a bit." Caroline said to herself as she could start to feel a bit of fatigue start to build up in her. She laid her back on the wall, trying to take as many deep breathes as possible before she would have to start running once again. She only got up to three when she started to hear running once again as she sighed and shook her head as she didn't even bother turning to the source of the running and simply just ran towards the square as fast as she could.
"WHY WON'T YOU GUYS TAKE THE HINT! I AM NOT INTERESTED IN WHATEVER YOU GUYS ARE INTERESTED IN!" Caroline yelled as she needed to try and catch her breath as all of this running was tiring her out faster than she could keep up. "Can't do that Caroline! We were asked to make sure you were safe!" A voice, male replied to her as she could see a shadow descending down upon her as she looked up to see it was a man with red hair, jumping from a height in a manner to tackle her down.
Thinking fast, Caroline simply shot her grappling hook to a solid brick building that was opposite her and her pursuer trying to tackle her and soon was pulled violently towards her destination. She had yet to calibrate the grappling hook properly so the forces she felt were almost enough to break her arm off as she snapped the rope before she could crash into the building itself, tumbling down as she realized she was now going downhill fast, tucking her body in and making sure she was small to minimize the damage caused to her.
As she laid on the ground briefly to recover from the tumble, she slowly stood up once again only to see the figure of a man with red hair chasing after her being followed by a blonde haired woman with what appeared to be blue headpieces attached to her head. Having no time to waste and her goal of the abandoned NOL building in sight, Caroline wasted no more time than she needed making her way towards the NOL Building, thankful that she was simply bruised and not actually injured.
As Caroline reached the door of the designated location, She tried to open it only to realize that it was still locked and would need to be breached. Having no time to waste, she looked at an Otsunian who was armed with a shotgun that she needed. "Hey you! I need your help with this door!" Caroline shouted, pointing at the hinges as she noticed her two pursuers getting closer as she gestured for the man to hurry.
However the man did not hurry, but was instead left confused by what was going on as Caroline groaned in frustration. Without even wasting any more time, she simply swiped the gun off the man's hands and blasted the hinges of the door off, just in time for her to see the Red haired man try to restrain her again as she stepped to the side, allowing the man's only speed and force to cause the door to crash down as Caroline did not even hesitate to just run into the building, tossing the shotgun back to the confused man.
"Why do you have to make this so difficult..." The man said groaning on the ground as Caroline couldn't help but feel sorry for the man, being made to work this hard just to catch a scientist who prefers to spend her time in a lab, not running like this as she reloaded her last grappling hook, deciding to use her knowledge of the abandoned NOL base to try and hide for a bit before catching her breath.
'Roof Roof...Right… I could just use the stairs to get to the roof but if I have to run up that many levels they will definitely catch up to me...' Caroline thought as she decided to check the floor plan and suddenly had an idea as her eyes began to scan through the schematics and figure stuff out. She looked up to see her two stalkers start searching for her, checking each room together as Caroline knew what she had to do as she made her way to the abandoned building's power room.
Making sure she kept herself as low to the ground, Caroline crawled on the ground with her elbows touching the ground instead of her hands and her knees touching the ground as well. This was to minimize the amount of cuts she would have received from any broken shards of glass as if they were on her elbows and knees, it would be just scrapes but if a particularly sharp glass were to touch her hands or pierce through her boots that would be more of a hindrance than a benefit.
She would have liked to use a floating ars magus spell to lift herself off the ground to not deal with this in the first place but she was worried that her pursuers might actually have ars magus trackers and just follow her by following the flow of Seithr to her. This was her best option to not only remain silent but also to avoid detection until she reached the generator. Her plan was a simple one, get to the power room and activate it, as soon as it's activated, make a run for the elevator and take it all the way to the roof, thus allowing her to set up a trap for her pursuers as they would be forced to take the stairs.
'Right...that's the plan...but is it going to work the way I think it will.' Caroline thought as she was soon face to face with the power room, sneaking into the room as she needed to act quick. Walking towards the Ars Magus generator, it was waiting to be reactivated and needed to be done so manually. 'Dammit. If it was able to activated automatically.' Caroline figured as her time to rush to the elevator was going to be very rough now as she sighed and rubbed her forehead.
She normally hates odds like this but if this is what is delivered to her, it is what she will need to do. "Makoto. If you're listening, I'm going for the elevator to head to the roof. If you can, can you take cover near the stairwell." Caroline said, giving a brief message through the ars magus communicator as she placed her hand on the power source, taking a deep breath as she immediately activated the Ars Magus Generator, bringing life to the long abandoned building.
As soon as the lights came on, Caroline immediately rushed out of the room, running for the elevator as fast as she could as she saw her ticket. "There she is!" The woman shouted as Caroline had to act quick before it was too late. Aiming her last grappling hook at the gun, she adjusted it so that it would try to latch and deploy and shot it right for the elevator's Up button, striking it as thankfully the elevator was at ground level, slowly opening the doors to her freedom.
"ENOUGH OF THIS CAT AND MOUSE GAME!" The man shouted as Caroline turned behind to see this man chase her, much faster than she could ever hope for. Even if she retracted the hook and tried to latch onto the elevator to lose him, there was a risk of him just grabbing her legs and restraining her, then they would have her caught. No, she needed to act and thus she sacrificed her final grappling hook and fired the gun portion of her grappling gun at what she saw was a fire extinguisher.
A huge puff of white smoke billowed into the air as she used the brief distraction to set up her next plan. Popping several pins, she tossed a few fake flashbangs to the ground and continued to sprint for the elevator. She could hear the sounds of people turning away from the flash radius which was what she wanted. Most people when they experience something once have an uncanny ability to predict and react to the situation in front of them at a near light speed. However it was this reaction that Caroline was banking on as she made her way to the elevator and pressed the button for the roof.
Realizing that they had been fooled, Caroline's pursuer's turned around and were ready to give chase when Caroline finally tossed out a real flashbang to the ground just in front of the elevator while mashing at the close door button. Now that her pursuers have experienced both outcomes, she was counting on them locking up in indecision, unable to decide to trust their instincts of this being a real flashbang or go ahead with the risk of being blinded and disorientated.
'Please. Please fall for the bait.' Caroline thought as she held herself with bated breath. She knew that if this gambit didn't work, she was going to have to get physical and if her running prowess was an indication to anything, she would outright lose in a fight. As Caroline looked on, she could see the blonde haired woman was paralyzed with indecision like she had suspected but the red haired male was a different story.
In a desperate attempt to catch her before the elevator goes up, the man charged at her, full speed without trying to cover his face for the flash. Caroline froze as if he got close enough he could slam the elevator button, force the elevator doors to open up again and she would be caught. All of this time she had been trying to outsmart her opponents where her brawn would failed but now it comes to a battle of wills and brawn as Caroline gulped and aimed her gun.
Was Caroline an amazing shot? Not really, she chalked up her shot at the fire extinguisher to be luck that it was that close for her to shoot. But she can go for a miss instead, thus she aimed for the man's side, hoping that the threat of gunfire would dissuade him from pursuing her any further. However whether one would call it luck or circumstance, the man raised his shoulder just a bit during his full sprint and thus his shoulder caught the bullet instead of the bullet missing instead.
As soon as the elevator door closed and the elevator began to move, Caroline couldn't help but collapse on her butt as she lied down on the elevator floor to take a deep breath and catch her breath. Her chest was heaving as she couldn't stand how sweaty she felt and thus fully took off the top part of her biker suit, exposing her shirt as she wiped away the sweat she had accumulated. This much needed brief respite was all she needed to make sure she didn't faint from overwork.
'This...This is no way for a scientist to be treated dammit.' Caroline thought as she reached over to her Ars Communicator to answer the call she was receiving. "Caroline! Are you alright?!" Makoto questioned as Caroline simply panted heavily for her to hear as Makoto simply nodded her head understanding that to be the universal language of she managed to lose the people chasing after her but she was now tired as fuck as Makoto heard a ping as she approached the elevator door cautiously.
"I am alright Makoto….were it not for my tiredness I would kick you in the pussy right now. Might not hurt as much as a man would but it still hurts if I do it right." Caroline answered as she stood up and walked out of the elevator as she dropped herself onto Makoto's arms as Makoto quickly moved her to the wall and had her rest there. "Now can I count on you to deal with the people chasing after me? I swear to god they are just relentless." Caroline continued as Makoto simply nodded her head at that, understanding what she needed to do.
As the elevator went down, both Caroline and Makoto could hear a couple of footsteps approaching from the stairs as Makoto looked at Caroline and the both knew what had to be done. Caroline positioned herself opposite the stairs where the door would swing her direction as Makoto waited at the other side as soon the door was opened violently and Makoto acted at the moment, immediately tackling the person to the ground as Caroline had her gun ready, pointing it right at the person as there was a brief struggle before Makoto's eyes widened as she realized who she had tackled down.
"Woah Woah Woah Caroline! Gun down!" Makoto said, grabbing Caroline's gun and pointing it to the ground as Caroline couldn't help but be confused as to what had just happened. Caroline decided to not say anything as Makoto got off the person she had tackled as the person slowly stood up, brushing the dust off her clothes as Caroline got a better look at the person Makoto had just stopped her from putting a bullet into as her outfit may remind her of an NOL official, the blue loose jacket, the way her back was exposed and the obvious tiny skirt told Caroline that this was not an official NOL uniform as Makoto simply looked at the woman with both a look of surprise and shock.
"...Noellie is that you?.."
