Distortion 47
Deep in the recesses of the 5th Hierarchical City of Ibukido laid a long forgotten secret. To the average citizen of a hierarchical city, most people would know of the fact that all hierarchical cities house a forbidden piece of dark war technology known as the cauldron. What most citizens are not aware of are the experiments and trials that were undertaken away from prying eyes. And it is these deep forgotten recesses that Relius Clover seeked his ultimate prize.
When he pried into the memories of Makoto Nanaya in what felt like ages ago, he saw the glimpses of the remnants of Ibukido remaining intact. He saw what she had seen and while he had no attachment to the material he once worked on, there was something else important down there that he had figured would have been destroyed alongside the whole base. As his footsteps echoed around him, he finally reached his destination.
Coffins, coffins everywhere. Coffins where the eyes could see. This mass graveyard in front of Relius Clover was where he wanted to see. He did not hesitate to summon Ignis to use her claws to pry open forcibly the coffins that had laid long dormant, not caring for the moral boundaries such things represented in the first place. His eyes came face to face with a familiar face in front of him as he did not hesitate to lean his face closer to the deceased person in front of him.
"While you would serve as poor material for the imperator herself, the very fact that you all survived a blast from the Take Mikazuchi itself is enough to give me inspiration for my own goals." Relius coldly spoke as his eyes danced around the woman whose appearance resembled that of the 12th Murakumo Unit, Mu-12, herself. His eyes scanned for any imperfections that could be present, any flaws that the coffin had in protecting it's failure of a host and could not find a single flaw to point out.
"Truly remarkable, I must take this coffin in for further testing, Ignis if you may." Relius commanded as Ignis did not hesitate to begin digging her long steel nails into the very steel itself. The sheer force of her thrusts would have been enough to completely destroy anybody who would attempt to fight against it yet the coffin put up a fight like nobody had ever seen. It stayed resilient and strong and it took several attempts from Ignis to finally free the metal from it's original source.
"Hmmm… could it be that this metal is also the same type of metal that the murakumo armor is produced from, most fascinating indeed." Relius pondered as he was now beginning to have a wide variety of ideas of how he could enhance Ignis to be better and stronger than she was currently. All of the possibilities danced around in his mind and he could not wait to put all of them to the test. But that was not all that was in his mind at that moment.
"To think that the old data of Mu-12 lingered as long as it did and nobody saw it fit to let me know of it's existence, I do genuinely feel insulted here." Relius monologued as he approached the old facility that housed all of the important data that he once worked on. He had considered the option of just destroying it because it was old data and thus served no other purpose other than to let his greatest enemies of his work but at the same time, he could not help but be curious if the projects that he worked on in the past would serve him well in the future.
"I suppose it would not hurt to have this data now to destroy on a later date. I would rather have it in my personal possession rather than have a person stumble upon it the same way Makoto Nanaya did." Relius said as his eyes began to examine the device in front of him to find out how he was going to scan and store the data that was waiting for it's final conclusion. As he did so, he cannot help but wonder how much longer it was going to take for Sora Minakaze to show up and who else would appear with him.
"The Error is sure taking his time. Maybe the mad dog proved too much of a match for him." Relius said but those words would come back to bite him when he heard a new pair of footsteps approach as he decide to remain quiet and observe from his viewing position. His eyes then caught a glimpse of what he figured was the source of the new footsteps and began his quiet observation. Sora and Amy of course, were not aware that they were being spied upon at that moment and were just making their way to the core of the cauldron.
"So this is the place we need to be?" Sora questioned as Amy nodded her head upon hearing his question. Sora took a deep breath at that moment as he knew he had been building up to this very moment, the day had finally arrived for him to finally try his hand in returning home safely and without incident. He looked at how sweaty his palms had become and wondered if that was because he had been preparing for this very moment this entire time? Or maybe this is what it meant to have nerves.
"Yes, we are at the destination we need to be at." Amy said as she too was feeling a butterfly feeling growing in her stomach. Her duty to keep watch on Sora was coming to it's conclusion and she needed to prepare herself to do her due duty should Sora survive the journey through the cauldron. But the short time she spent with the man and also learning of what the man truly thought of her must have sowed seeds of doubt into her mind because she was not sure if she could fully commit to such a goal now.
"So what am I supposed to do? Just throw myself down the cauldron and that's it?" Sora asked as Amy nodded her head upon hearing that. Sora took a deep breath upon hearing that as he knew doing such a thing would require him to build up the courage to do so. His curiosity then was drawn towards the area around him. He had only seen one cauldron, the Kagutsuchi cauldron and that cauldron was different to the one he was looking right now.
His eyes were drawn to the wide variety of coffins that surrounded the area and he cannot help but approach one of the coffins that had been opened up. He couldn't help but remember the day he was at Ibukido and the fact that these coffins could survive for as long as they did from what was a laser beam in the sky was amazing enough. He felt tempted to ask Amy at that moment if there was a laser beam that struck the city the same way his timeline had but decided against it.
Normally Amy would be against Sora taking his time like he was at that moment, prompting him to hurry and finish what he needed to do and get going back to his actual job but this time, Amy felt not like doing that. She understood the end goal was right there and Sora himself was resolute in making the jump but he needed time to prepare himself. It was then she saw him slowly approach the open coffin and made a small dash towards him.
Sora's eyes widened upon what he had seen as Amy realized what he was looking at that moment and stopped running at that moment. Sora himself remained quiet before new untold questions began to surface on his mind, questions that he wanted to have answered even though the people who could answer such things were not around him at that moment. "Amy… I don't care if you are an expert or not, I need you to answer something for me right now this very instant." Sora demanded, his voice hinting the anger he was feeling at that moment.
"Tell me right now, Why is there someone who has Noel's face in this coffin." Sora questioned as Amy herself remained quiet. She knew the answer herself due to seeing all of the timelines that these coffins were opened but decided against for once actually telling Sora about it, feigning ignorance instead. It was then Sora walked over to another cauldron and opened that cauldron to see another person bearing Noel's face on it.
Then...as if he was consumed by a mad lust for the truth, Sora began to undo and open every single coffin that had kept it's lid shut for him to see the person that laid underneath. Each and every one containing the peaceful almost deceased looking face of Noel Vermillion in each one. Their body types seemed to change but the face always remained the same. Even the oldest looking Noel doppelganger he found barely looked like she had aged at that moment.
"Amy…" Sora said, nearly growling as Amy could sense that Sora was beginning to feel a sense of anger at the situation around him as several coffins were forcibly opened at that moment, the identities of all the occupants inside all bearing the face of Noel Vermillion in them. Sora wanted to know the truth of what on earth he was seeing and seeing Amy just remain quiet about it made him wonder if she actually knew the truth about the mass grave of noel faces he was now seeing or if this was just a coincidence for her.
"...I...I do not know how to put it to words." Amy said as Sora took that as Amy understanding the truth but was just unable to put it to words as he took a deep breath, deciding that showing anger now would be wrong and slowly closed the coffins before him. He did not want to overreact at that moment as while this shock revelation in front of him was a lot to process, they were not a part of his final goal at the end of the day as he took a few deep breaths to calm himself down, hoping that would be enough to help him relax.
"But I do… if you wish to care to listen to what I have to say, Error." Relius said, his voice echoing throughout the empty room the cauldron was in. Sora himself immediately got to a fighting position and so did Amy as their bodies tensed heavily upon hearing the voice of the man who has caused the both of them a whole bunch of headaches, some personal and some more professional. They were not sure where he was going to come from but much to their surprise, instead of taking his time to set up an ambush, he merely walked down the stairs to greet them.
"Did my voice scare you two into such battle hardened positions? I do not think I am worth that much of concern, especially with your current predicament." Relius said as Sora and Amy continued to tense and had their hands on their weapons as Relius's eyes went to the next thing that was missing from their small group. "I must ask, where is that Mercenary that was accompanying you this whole time. I personally am not interested in her being material for the detonator but the fact that she spent such close proximity to a guardian of the Azure and a person who is slated to be erased by the Master Unit herself has made me wonder if there are any changes to her soul that occurred as a result." Relius said, not caring about the feelings for others as usual.
"As If I had any intention of telling you what had happened to Bullet." Sora said, venom present in his voice as Relius tilted his head upon hearing that before a small thought came to his mind. "So you yourself do not know what happened to the mercenary mainly because she chose to leave herself behind to deal with the Mad Dog. Am I not correct?" Relius theorized as Sora remained silent upon hearing that, tensing his fist tightly until blood was drawn.
"Did I hit a nerve by any chance? I do apologize if I…" "Shut up before you even finish that statement, You know we know that you don't care about our feelings in the first place." Sora immediately retorted, making sure that Relius did not have the chance to spew any of his lies to his ears as Relius simply scoffed upon hearing that. "While I may not care for your emotions in the traditional sense. The Soul is very sensitive to such things regardless of what I wish." Relius explained as Sora did not feel like wanting to have Relius explain what he meant.
"But what I think about the human condition does not matter to you. What really matters to you is the people that rest inside these coffins do they not?" Relius said as Sora hesitated to respond to what he had just said. Of course his curiosity about the Noel faces was the biggest thing that was on his mind. But did he want his explanation to come from the one man he trusts the least. The man responsible for causing him so much pain in the first place?
"Come on now Mr Minakaze, your intentions are as clear as day on your face. You do desire the truth and your curiosity like mine is piqued in regards to it." Relius said, his voice acting as a lure for Sora to come in. Amy could see the hesitation present in Sora's face and wanted to intervene but knew better than to let a sneaky man like Clover have the chance to twist her words into something that would benefit him more, instead she decided to leave that choice up to Sora, to let him decide if he wanted to know more about the thing he was looking in front of him.
"… And if my curiosity is piqued, what can you really tell me?" Sora questioned as Relius simply smiled upon hearing that. "Why, I can tell you anything your mind wishes to know. Why these women exist the way they do, What their purpose was? How they are made to do their duty and when they were buried here." Relius said as while some questions were more important over others, The fact that Relius had answers to his questions made his decision to not accept the offer in front of him less of an acceptable choice for his own mind.
"Then tell me this, Why do all of these women have the same face?" Sora questioned as Relius simply grinned in a sly manner. "You mean to say, Why do these women have the face of Miss Noel Vermillion on them? Are you trying to test and see if I am aware of things I should not?" Sora couldn't help but feel a small shiver crawl up his back as he did not expect Relius to respond the way he did. The fact that he knew that all of these women looked like Noel told him his information was the truth to an extent.
"Regardless of your intentions, The reason why they have the same face is simple, they all are based on a singular source. The heart of the Master Unit herself, the Origin. Or at least as much as I can figure out based on the images I saw." Relius explained as Sora felt a chill crawl up his back. Amy herself remained silent, having guessed the truth for some time now as Sora's eyes went towards her direction, wanting to see if she knew this for a fact herself.
"As for why they must resemble the same person? Well, it's to make the perfect Murakumo Unit, capable of inheriting the eye of the Azure. Unlike the other Murakumo units that were created beforehand." Relius explained as Sora's eyes went deeper towards Amy as he tried to not let this new wave of information overwhelm his sanity. The information Relius was telling him was not important but it was more important to learn why this was important.
"The Eye of the Azure? What do you mean by that?" Sora demanded as Relius sighed a bit before his memory jogged a bit. "Do you remember the last time you saw Noel Vermillion. Not the Noel Vermillion of this world but the Noel Vermillion of your world." Relius questioned as Sora did not understand what the man was speaking until he remembered the day he saw his Noel for the final time before he got dragged into this mess.
That day, she wore an intricate robe that looked like nothing he had ever seen before. Her eyes that day were glowing blue instead of the normal bright green look she normally had. In fact everything about her resembled that of a shrine maiden in his head rather than the normally shy girl he was aware of. "Noel Vermillion, is simply put, a Murakumo unit born from these very pits. An artificial being given life with the sole purpose of one day bearing the eye of the Azure. The eyes allow one to see where the Master Unit Amaterasu lies deep within the boundary." Relius said.
"… What he speaks is the truth. The woman known as Noel Vermillion has the eye of the Azure and it's like what he explained it to be." Amy quickly added, knowing Sora would like some confirmation on it before he proceeded on his conversation. "So if that is the case, Why this mass grave site? Why all of the faces of Noel Vermillion over here? Are these girls nothing but the rejects that failed to become a Murakumo Unit?"
"Ahhh, Now you are asking the questions one must ask when they see such things." Relius said as he began to make his way towards one of the coffins. "Yes, Each and every one of these girls are a failed Murakumo Unit. Each could have been a potential Murakumo Unit but for whatever reason, they never became one, thus they were instead put down before they could ever become a danger to society." Relius explained as Sora couldn't help but feel a sickening feeling grow on his stomach upon hearing that.
"How in the hell can you say something like that so casually without a second thought?! These girls had lives and you just took them away because they did not meet a certain criteria!?" Sora questioned as Relius was not fazed by Sora's loud comment towards him. "Why of course, that is the purpose of those girls in the first place. If they failed to become what we needed there was no need to keep them alive." Relius calmly explained as Sora couldn't help but feel an anger swell up within him upon hearing such a statement being made towards his face.
"And you speak as if they were living things. They are not such things. They are just artificial creatures created in a laboratory to serve a purpose. Not unlike how Lab mice were treated." Relius explained as Sora's frustration towards the man simply grew as Relius had more to add to that statement of his. "But if that is not a satisfactory answer for you, May you perhaps be more satisfied to know that these girls died a painless death?" Relius asked, appealing to the humanity a person would have.
"It doesn't matter what type of death a person suffers! A death is still a death! It doesn't matter if one girl died without feeling pain while another died feeling all of the world's horrors breathing down on their necks!" Sora retorted as he couldn't hold back the anger that was present in his voice any longer. He couldn't believe what he had just heard and apparently, dying less painfully over dying in suffering is a requirement when dying in general is not a good thing.
"So you say… Regardless, the question you must ask is not how they died but for what purpose they died for?" Relius questioned as Sora took a deep breath. He would be attacking Relius at that moment but at the same time, if he rushed this, his curiosity will never be piqued. Yet at the same time did he want to have all of his questions answered for him? He knew that the questions he was asking was all not important for him to get the hell out of the timeline he was in and possibly back to his own timeline.
"They died for the purpose to become the Eye of the Azure no?" Sora said as Relius shook his head upon hearing that. "No No No Mr Minakaze, These Murakumo units did not die to become just the eye. They died so they can become a new god." Relius replied as Amy now had her chance to respond. "That's Bullshit, Nobody can just replace the Master Unit!" Amy said as Relius's attention was now turned towards the one half of the guardian of the Azure.
"Oh but what if we can? What if instead of this almighty being that floated in the deepest recess, away from Mankind's gaze we instead have a being that we can control to our heart's wishes and have that be our god instead, an artificial god so to say." Relius explained as Amy scoffed at his suggestion. "That is no better than what mankind first tried to do with the Takagamahara system. What you seek to achieve is simply impossible Relius Clover." Amy said as Relius shook his head.
"For now, you see, it is only a matter of time before I fully develop the detonator to be that replacement." Relius said as Amy and Sora looked at him wide eyed upon hearing that. Now it was Relius's turn to ask questions. "And what about you Miss Amy No… 5th Prime Field Device Episolon 5. What about your father's wish? Do you think you are truly fulfilling his wish that he gave to you when he died that fateful day?" Relius questioned as Amy froze upon hearing that.
"A wish?" Sora said as his gaze was now upon Amy as he wondered what kind of wish was Amy hiding from him at that moment. "Yes Mr Minakaze, a wish that the late professor that created Amy wished for her to fulfill. A wish not as grand as mine but still regardless, a wish nevertheless." Relius explained as Sora shook his head upon hearing that. "What does the wishes have to do with this graveyard huh? What does your desire to replace god have to do with the girls that died here other than being your pawns for your own goal." Sora questioned as Relius shook his head upon hearing Sora say that.
"Do you truly understand what it takes to make a single murakumo unit in the first place? The sacrifices one must make to make a singular being?" Relius questioned as Sora did not know where this was going and did not really care to think about the creation of a Murakumo unit in the first place. "Does it really matter how a being is created in the first place? Whether by biological or artificial means a life is still a life at the end of the day. Nothing more, Nothing less." Sora said, laying his foot on the ground on how he stood with Murakumo Units in general.
"Hmph, trying to deflect a question with a moral one is the thing only small minded individuals who cannot see progress attempt to do. I thought you were better than that Mr Minakaze." Relius retorted as Sora scoffed upon hearing that. "The only thing that you clearly lack is a sense of empathy. Has seeing nothing but numbers and statistics really warped your understanding of the human heart?" Sora questioned as Relius shook his head upon hearing that.
"And that is where we may never see eye to eye Mr Minakaze. Your heart is set on maintaining the whole of humanity when in actual reality, Humanity does not care for each other except for themselves. Say you, You are trying to return back to your own timeline. The people you have met here you will never see ever again. Do not try to say that you will attempt to do so. You may have empathy but you are not an idiot to see such a glaring contradiction."
Sora simply remained quiet upon hearing the words Relius spoke at that moment. Of course he was not an idiot and knew that what Relius had said but there was something more than just being smart and having common sense. "Regardless of how you are correct. I still wish to have a way to meet the people here once again if I can. I don't care if that makes me seen as a fool in your eyes, bonds are what makes people strong, not just power alone." Sora said as Relius scoffed upon hearing that.
"And what about you Amy? What do you think is more important? Fulfilling your own wishes or what Mr Minakaze just said?" Relius said as Amy herself remained quiet for a bit, unsure of how she should respond to him at that moment. Should she respond the same way Sora had just done so or should she go with a different response. "Just respond truthfully Amy, There's no need for you to answer his question with something that would satisfy him. He can see through lies anyways." Sora said as Relius nodded his head upon hearing Sora say that.
"...Then if I have to give my honest answer, as long as I can continue to do my duty as a guardian of the Azure, then it doesn't matter what happens to me. I can keep fulfilling my wish towards the professor who made me who I am." Amy said, answering from her heart the truth of how she felt. Relius nodded his head upon hearing that as he decided to reveal something to her at that moment. "Then what will you do if you can see him one more time? What if you can have both your wish and the man you called your father?" Relius questioned.
"Of course I would love to have both. But we shouldn't be greedy for such things and accept what we have now. We shouldn't delude ourselves with a future that is not even possible." Amy said as Relius scoffed upon hearing that. "But that is what you not tried to do, is it not?" Relius's words made Amy stop right in her tracks as Sora himself was confused upon hearing that. "What is he talking about Amy?" Sora questioned as he felt a sinking feeling grow at his stomach as he did not know how to feel about what was going to be revealed next.
"The 5th Prime Field Device, Epsilon 5. You truly were a miracle, a Murakumo Unit created not from normal means but from what can be seen as a miracle. You are very different from the Epsilon 5 that was originally inscribed by the world." Relius Clover said as Amy too felt the sinking feeling grow in her stomach. Sora himself did not like where this was going as his mind was racing with the various possibilities that was presenting itself to his eyes.
"How….How are did you…" Epsilon's words were said with a shaky voice as Relius smiled. "The Master Unit attempts to try and erase the memories of all who live in her clutches but having lived for as long as I have, you learn new inventive ways to prevent such tampering in the first place. Alas I do not feel like revealing the secrets to my intact memory but more importantly, reveal what I do know now." Relius said as Amy felt a panic grow in her voice.
"No...Stop it." Amy said as Sora did not understand why Amy would have such panic in the first place. He felt like he was missing a crucial piece of the puzzle in this case to understanding why Epsilon was behaving this way and even if he were to tell Relius to be silent, that would do nothing in this case. Only going straight to a fight would be the only way to distract Relius from further disrupting Amy and his goal of getting out of the timeline.
"After all, You yourself was the reason why the man known as Sora Minakaze was able to be born in the first place." The moment Relius said those words, all thoughts of stopping Relius flew past Sora's head. He stood still as Amy quickly turned to see Sora's shocked face that was growing. "Was the despair you felt painful Epsilon? Was it human emotion that drove you to try and save your surrogate father as he was cruelly cast into a cauldron just like this into the boundary by those he trusted?" Relius said as Amy shook her head, wanting the man to stop.
"Come now, I know you have suspected this much for some time now. I can confirm to you with my eyes that the man standing next to you, the man known as Sora Minakaze, was a being born from the soul of the man you once called your father." Relius's words were sharp, piercing through the thin veil of the room as both Sora and Amy stood in combined silence, processing everything that had just been said.
For Sora, this shock was truly palpable. The dreams he had, the same dreams he had with Amy in them, He had originally thought that those dreams were just something that was connected to something like his bond with the girl but he did not expect for his dreams to be given to him for a reason like what he was hearing at that moment. Sora placed his hand on his chest, feeling the heart beat that was his own while processing that he had been born from the soul of another.
His eyes then went to Amy as she tried to look away from him but couldn't help but look back at him once again as her eyes began to swell, wanting to cry at that moment. "Indeed Mr Minakaze, your life as you know it was not born from the procreation of life between man and woman, but from the desperate wish of a Murakumo Unit wishing for her father figure to remain alive in her life." Relius explained.
"Amy...no Epsilon 5 dove in to save her beloved father when he was cast into the Boundary. His life was extinguished but his soul remained. In a desperate attempt to try and save him, she offered the very power that made her a miracle in the first place, what made her a Murakumo Unit." Relius said as he allowed Sora Minakaze to put the rest of the pieces in his mind as Sora remained quiet upon realizing what he thought was the most likely scenario that happened.
"Then if I had to make a guess, Miss Amy here drifted through the boundary, being born to explore such a black void of nothing but Seithr until she was found by the Master Unit and was made her guardian, allowing herself to be erased from the world and in return, be replaced by another Murakumo Unit in our current time." Relius's explanation gave Sora the suggestion that Amy… the former Murakumo Unit Epsilon 5, was not only the person who helped him to exist but also was herself, erased from history.
"But this is just my theory, so tell me Miss Amy, How correct am I?" Relius questioned as Amy's tears flowed at that moment as she wanted to refuse what Relius was saying to her at that moment. Her mind replayed that fateful painful day over and over again, the trauma she thought she had dealt with resurfacing in such a painful ugly manner as Relius nodded his head upon that. "Ahhh, your emotions are truly plain to see. If only I had found you sooner and turned you into a piece of my detonator." Relius said as Amy looked at Relius with hate in her eyes.
"Why do you look at me with such scorn in you eyes? I merely have pulled back the curtain of that fateful day for everyone to see plainly." Relius said as Amy was about to lunge at him at that moment, wanting to claw at him but soon felt a firm hand be placed on her shoulder as she turned to see Sora but with a look of calm now on his face instead of shock. "It's because not everyone likes being pried apart like some science experiment Relius Clover." Sora said, his voice strict as Amy was shocked by his tone.
"You never truly saw people as people. You either saw them as disposable tools and lab rats. You toy with human emotions and experiences not because you take some sick joy from it. You only care about what gets you the results you want!" Sora shouted as Relius scoffed upon hearing this. "And what does that mean in this case Mr Minakaze? You are aware of what this means for you are you not?" Relius questioned only for Ignis to block gunfire as Sora fired his gun right at him, holding his ground in the process.
"I do not care about what it means for me, what happened in the past happened in the past. We must like in the present and change our future instead." Sora said as he decided to step forward in Amy at that moment. "And even if I don't have to fight you right now. Even if it means delaying my only chance to jump down the cauldron should the Mad Dog decide to rear his ugly head at this moment to fight me again. I refuse to let you just say what you said and get away with it." Sora said as Amy's eyes saw a brief figure overlay itself over Sora's body.
"Hmph, You are simply wasting your time. But if you insist on wasting your time then waste your time you shall." Relius said as he snapped his finger and commanded Ignis to his side. "But do you think you can beat me easily?" Relius questioned as Sora remained quiet upon hearing that, ignoring what he just said as he looked right back at Amy. "Sorry for delaying things like this. Just stay here and let me deal with him." Sora said as Sora soon charged right for Relius. Amy was shocked to hear that as she raised her hand in shock, her eyes widened as the figure that was walking the same place with Sora approached Relius at that moment, Prompting Amy to raise her hand out as she muttered a word that Sora did not hear thankfully.
"...Father..."
