Prompt: A very picky trick-or-treater
My son just turned two and is barely saying complete words. On Halloween we took him trick-or-treating and when someone would hold out their hand with candy, he would inspect it and if he didn't care for what the candy was, he would look up and say "no thank you" and then start towards the next house.
All errors are mine.

Monday Night at Priestly's Household
"I'll be accompanying you and the kids for trick-or-treating next Friday," Miranda stated, as she settled in her California king size bed next to Andrea.
Andrea looked up from her book to Miranda in surprise. They had already discussed this the week before when Miranda had told her that even though she would love to join her and the kids, she wouldn't be able to because she has to go to upstate New York with her Runway team for the photoshoot that has been scheduled for months now. When Miranda realized that she wouldn't be able to join them, they sat their kids down to explain the situation.
Caroline and Cassidy, used to their mom being busy with Runway, had understood and weren't too upset, especially since the last time their mom had taken them trick-or-treating was when they were years younger. In recent years, Miranada would help them with their costumes and their nanny, Cara, would be the one taking them trick-or-treating. Liam, on the other hand, being only two years old, didn't understand what 'trick-or-treating on Halloween' means. To him, Halloween means he can dress in his many costumes, which he does on a weekly basis anyways, and so he wasn't bothered by Miranda not being there for it.
"I thought you had to be in upstate New York to manage the photoshoot?" Andrea asked.
"I'll still head up there Thursday and will come back Friday afternoon instead of Saturday afternoon," Miranda said, while working on the Book. "If Nigel and the Runaway crew can't handle the last bit then maybe I should hire more competent people."
"Are you sure? I mean, I know how important this photoshoot is and it's not like trick-or-treating is an important event or anything. You know Caroline and Cassidy don't care either way."
"But Liam cares," Miranda responded quietly.
Andrea straightens up from her relaxed position in bed and turns to fully look at Miranda. "Liam… what? Miranda! Liam is only 2 years old, a toddler that throws a tantrum at the drop of a hat when he doesn't get to choose when he goes down for his nap. He doesn't understand what 'trick-or-treating' means or entails, what makes you think he cares that you won't be there for it?"
Miranda pursed her lips and continued to work on the Book, fiercely marking the page she's on with her red pen and ignoring Andrea's eyes.
Andrea gently placed her hand on Miranda's to stop her from trying to avoid the conversation that they're heaving. "Miranda, sweetheart. What happened?"
Letting out a big sigh, Miranda placed the cap back on her red pen and stared at it. "You keep saying he doesn't fully know what Halloween means, but then why won't he tell me what he wants to be for Halloween? He loves getting dressed up in various costumes and has always made it known what outfits he wants me to buy him. I'm his Fashion Queen, the one he loves to play dress up with."
Just when Andrea didn't think she can love Miranda anymore than she already does, moments like this, when Miranda continues to show how much love for Liam she has, it makes her heart feel so full and reminds her of how lucky she and her son is to have Miranda Priestly's love. Swallowing the emotion that wants to overstake her, she asked, "And you think that just because he isn't telling you what he is planning to dress up as on Halloween, means he is being upset with you for not being there that day?"
Miranda huffs in frustration, "Doesn't it? How can you not see that? Liam knows he's my Little Prince and I'd give him anything he wants. So, the only reason why he wouldn't tell me now is because he's upset with me."
Andy let out a loud chuckle and shook her head at her lover's petulant 's bedtime routine has changed since Andy and her son had permanently moved into Miranda's home to be with her and her girls. Andy has become used to being chopped liver whenever Miranda is home in time for bedtime. Liam would tell her 'No mommy', then go and climb on Miranda's lap and request her to read him their bedtime story, The Little Prince by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry. It was their special time together.
"Thank you for reminding me of how much you spoil him," Andy teasingly glared at Miranda. "If you want to know what he plans to dress up for Halloween so much, why don't you join us for our costume's fitting at Donatella's on Wednesday?"
Wednesday at Donatella's Shop
After a long morning filled with meetings, Miranda was quite glad to have this opportunity to see all her loves. Even if it's just to see her daughters and Liam try on their Halloween costumes, she is happy to make the time for it and maybe see if she can rectify Liam's dismay with her for missing Halloween with him.
Walking into the shop, Donatella's assistant greeted Miranda and led her upstairs to where her family and Donatella arrived just in time to see her daughters walk out of the fitting rooms in costumes that were not Harry Potter, which took Miranda by surprise, since that was all they were talking about the week before. Cassidy, her oldest by only a few minutes, is wearing a lovely green gown, with gold detailing and Celtic imagery , reminding her of her daughter's favorite Disney movie, Brave. Caroline, on the other hand, went on a very different route and is sporting what seems to be a US Women's Soccer jersey.
"Mommy! You're here!" Cassidy excitedly, exclaimed.
"Do you like our costumes?" Caroline asked.
Miranda walked around her daughters to have a closer examination of their costumes and take in the intricate details that Donatella had done to Cassidy's gown. She hummed in satisfaction on the excellent work of the gown and turned her attention to Caroline's jersey. The jersey was kept simple and the details match the actual US Women's Soccer jersey. When her eyes move took in the number '6' on the jersey and the name 'Sachs' stitched above the number, another surprise.
"Although, I was expecting you girls to be in some form of Harry Potter related costumes, I do love this alternative look that you've decided to go with instead. Merida and Andrea."
The girls grinned brightly at their mother's approval and correct guess of their costumes.
"What until you see Liam's," Caroline said.
"Yeah! He looks really cute!"
Before Miranda can ask where Andrea and Liam were, Andrea walks out of the fitting room next to the girls and goes towards where she's standing.
"Miranda," Andrea greeted, as she leaned in to give Miranda a quick kiss on the lips. "Ready to see Liam's costume?"
Miranda gave a slight nod of her head in affirmative.
"Monkey, you can come out now," Andy called out loud enough for Liam to hear her.
The fitting room curtain moved over to the right side and the first thing Miranda sees is Donatella walking out, with her right hand holding onto Liam's left hand. Liam kept his eyes on Donatella and followed her out of the fitting. It was only when Dontatella motioned for him to look ahead and he turned his head to take in the others in the room, most importantly, Miranda. The formidable Fashion Queen, shocked into speechlessness at what Liam's costume ended up being. If you asked her about it later, she'd admit that she shouldn't have been surprised and if anything, should be asking herself why she hadn't thought of getting said costume made for him in the first place.
"Manda! Wook, I is your Wittle Prince!" Liam exclaimed excitedly as he lay eyes on Miranda.
"He didn't tell you because he wanted to surprise you," Andy stated.
Miranda gives Andy a quick glance before giving her full attention to Liam. Smiling, she knelt down and held out her arms to beckon him closer to her. Once he was in front of her, she gently ran her fingers along the silky, green outfit to the red band around his waist, and up to the yellow scarf around his neck.
"You wike, Manda?" Liam asked.
"You look lovely in your little flight suit, my Little Prince," Miranda responded. "All you're missing is your crown, we'll fix that don't you worry."
"Miranda! He doesn't need a crown," Andy said exasperatedly.
"Don't be silly Andrea, all princes need a crown."
"Yes, mommy, don't be shilly."
Halloween, Trick-Or-Treating Time
Miranda made a mental note to thank Nigel again for doing an excellent job with taking the lead in handling the photoshoot and help put her mind at ease for leaving early. If it wasn't for his excellent work, she wouldn't be here now with the love of her life, watching as Caroline and Cassid walk protectively on either side of Liam down the sidewalk. The girls carefully led Liam up the steps to the first home, their neighbors, and showed Liam how trick-or-treat works.
For the next few houses, Liam would follow the twins' lead, while Miranda and Andy would either walk behind them or stood waiting at the bottom of the stairs watching and taking pictures. After about a half hour of walking and trick-or-treating, Liam walked up to Miranda and held out his left hand for Miranda to take. Miranda smiled down at him and took his offered hand.
"Are you having fun, darling?"
Liam nodded his head and led her up to the next house, with the twins at the bottom of the steps waiting. Instead of letting go of Miranda's hand, he looked up and asked, "Manda go wif me?"
"Sure, darling. "
Miranda motioned for the girls to head up the steps first, while her and Liam slowly made their way up behind them. After the girls finished and walked down the steps to stand with Andy, Miranda and Liam took their place and approached the front door.
"What do you say, darling?"
"Twik O twee?"
The older gentleman chuckled, then reached into his bowl of candies and grabbed a handful to put in Liam's bucket. However, before he could, Liam let go of Miranda's hand and grabbed the gentleman's hand to stop him from putting it in his bucket. He carefully examined the candies, then looked up at the gentleman and said, "No, tanks."
Liam turned and looked up at Miranda and held out his arms in a 'pick me up' signal. Miranda, thoroughly amused at what happened, knelt down to pick him up. The older gentleman chuckled again and said, "Your son is quite picky, huh?"
Before turning to walk down the stairs, Miranda looked over at the gentleman and responded, "He's not picky, he just has high standards."
"Manda?"
"Yes, darling?
"I wuv you."
"I love you too, my Little Prince. "
The End
