EUGENE'S POV

I tossed in my sleep, heart pounding beneath the sheets of this strange bed. The creaks of Charlie's old house should have been comforting, but they faded into the background as the nightmare took hold of me again.

I was back in the car. The rain was coming down hard, blurring everything outside into streaks of darkness. Dad's hands were clenched around the steering wheel, knuckles white, his jaw tight like he was fighting to stay calm. Mom sat beside him, trying to steady her voice, but I could hear the fear in it, just under the surface.

"It's going to be fine, Eugene," she said, but even then, I didn't believe her.

In the backseat, Emma's hand rested on mine, her fingers cold and trembling, though she tried to hide it. Her dark curls were wet from the rain, her green eyes wide with something that felt like a warning.

Then the lights came—blinding, cutting through the storm, coming straight for us.

I tried to shout, to grab the wheel, but it was too late. The impact was thunderous, metal tearing into metal. The car spun out, everything a blur of noise and force, and then—blackness.

But the dream didn't end there. It never did.

In the dark, I could hear them—my parents, their breaths shallow, their voices fading. Dad whispered, "Hold on," but he was already slipping away. And then, nothing. Just silence.

Except Emma was still there.

She was beside me, like she had been that night, her hand still gripping mine, but her eyes... they weren't scared anymore. They were empty, blank, staring through me. Her skin was cold, almost like she had drained of life the moment the car had stopped.

"Eugene…" Her voice was soft, too calm, too eerie. "You promised."

I tried to speak, to say something, anything, but my throat was tight, burning. She was slipping away from me, her hand growing colder, her grip loosening.

"I'm sorry," I whispered. "I'm so sorry, Emma…"

The dream shifted, twisting in on itself. The memories, the grief—they swallowed me whole. I was back there, trapped in the crushing weight of that night, unable to breathe. The accident. The loss. The fact that I was still alive when they weren't.

And then the rain came again, pounding harder, drowning me in it. Something moved in the shadows—big, looming, dark. I couldn't see it, but I felt it closing in, smothering me. I tried to run, to wake up, but it wouldn't let me. The darkness swallowed me whole.

I shot up in bed, gasping for air, my chest tight, heart hammering. I could still hear the rain outside the window, soft now, just a faint echo of what had been in my dream.

It was just a nightmare, I told myself, running a hand over my face. Just a dream.

But the weight on my chest didn't lift. The memory of the accident clung to me, heavy and relentless, like the damp air that seemed to follow me everywhere since I'd come to Forks.

I glanced around the room—Bella's old room, they said. The faded posters, the worn furniture. It didn't feel like mine. None of this felt like mine. I didn't belong here, in this house, in this life. Not after what happened.

Tomorrow was supposed to be a fresh start. A new school, a new town. But I knew better. There was no starting over, no running from the shadows of that night. They were always with me. And somehow, I knew, they always would be.

"You look terrible kiddo, did you get enough sleep last night?" Charlie asked, looking up from his newspaper at my exhausted face with concern. Sue entered from the kitchen with a tray full of muffins.

"Not really," i said truthfully as i sat down sighing. Charlie put down the newspaper, i noticed he wasn't an expert at the emotions department. To be honest, neither was i. But that didn't keep the pain or the dreams away. Sue put down the tray and placed a hand on my shoulders, her warm smile painfully reminded me of my mother.

"Have some muffins dear." she said softly. I forced a smile back and picked one. They were delicious, but i didn't have much of an appetite.

"I got you a car. An old Volkswagen Rabbit..." Charlie said, sliding a key towards me, "Bought it off the Blacks. Jacob Black's been itching to sell it once he came back from Brazil with the Cullens a few days ago. He said his dad had wanted him to sell it." he stated, his expression somber. Billy Black's funeral had only been two weeks ago, though i refused to attend it. I didn't think i could stand seeing a casket again. I looked down at the key, ever since the accident six weeks ago, the idea of setting foot inside a car made my head spin. Images started flashing inside my head. Sue must have noticed my face turn pale, she placed a hand over mine and gave it a gentle squeeze.

"You can always skip for today. Charlie and i could spend the day with you. " she offered, i had to force a smile again. She was a nice person.

"Don't worry about me. Ill be fine," I assured her as i grabbed the key and slid it inside my pocket. She squeezed my hand one more time before releasing it. I slowly got up, "I better get going." I said to them as i grabbed my bag.

It was raining heavily outside, i jogged towards the hunchback car, opening it and sliding in. My hands started shaking when i put my arms on the steering wheel. I started hearing the voices again.

"You promised." Emma's voice whispered.

I sighed as i started the engine.

I always hated it when people stared at me, even before the accident. But unfortunately Forks was a pretty small town, news will spread as quickly as wildfire around here. The stares started immediately after i got out of my car and started heading towards the administration building. Some looked at me with pity, others with curiosity. Atleast the rain had stopped.I kept my head down and hands in the pocket of my hoodie. I wasn't interested in making any friends, despite Charlie's and Sue's request the previous day. Emma was the only friend i needed. I opened the door of the first building and entered. It was a small office; it had a little waiting area with padded folding chairs, orange-flecked commercial carpet, notices and awards cluttering the walls, a big clock ticking loudly. There were plants everywhere as if the greenery outside wasn't enough. I walked towards the long counter that cut the room in half. Behind the counter were three desks, one of which was manned by a large redhead with glasses playing a game on her computer.I looked around nervously as i made my way towards her.

"Good morning, can i help you?" she asked.

"Hi, i'm Eugene Swan," i informed her and saw the immediate awareness light her eyes. Clearly i was a topic of gossip. Son of the chief's younger brother; lost his parents and taken in by the chief and his wife.

"Yes, ofcourse." she said turning off the game. She dug through a pile of documents until she found what she was searching, "You'll find your schedule and the map of the school on the school website. Take this slip, make sure each teacher signs this and bring it back at the end of the school day," she walked to the counter to hand me the slip. I tried not to make eye contact but i could feel her eyes scrutinizing me, "Your cousin, Bella Swan, used to study here over seven years ago. You look just like her. How is she these days?" she asked with a friendly smile on her face. I was never exactly close with my cousin Bella even before she got married, but she did attend my parent's funeral. She'd stood withdrawn from the others, looking paler than i'd remembered. I met her husband Edward during Billy's funeral. They had decided that their daughter, Renesmee, should study at the same highschool her adoptive parents did.

"She's fine, thanks for asking." I said forcing a smile back at her; which i've been doing a lot lately. She nodded and hopped, just like Charlie and Sue, that i'd like it here in Forks. I didn't bother to smile back again, i walked out of building one and headed towards the cafeteria. Following the directions from the map on my phone. I noticed a group of students gathered at the parking lot. They were staring at a car, some were even taking pictures. As i got close i realized that that wasn't any ordinary car, it was an Audi R8. The old me would have paid a little more interest in the car like the others, but that was the pre-accident me. I didn't even spare the car a second look as I walked past the group.

"Is that the new kid's?" i heard one girl ask. I could only assume they were talking about Renesmee, who had just returned from Brazil. It made sense—who else would have a car like that?

Building three was easy to spot once i got around the cafeteria. I followed the crowd that was headed inside the building and found my way to the Algebra class. I noticed that I was the only person there without a rain coat. I handed the slip to Madam Dorothy, according to the name plate on her desk. Atleast she didn't gawk at me like the receptionist.

"So you're the other new kid," she said as she signed the slip, "You wanna introduce yourself?" she asked, handing me back the slip.

"Not really, no." I said taking back the slip. She nodded in understanding.

"Alright, there's an empty seat next to Miss Harlan." she said pointing to an empty seat. As I moved toward it, I noticed her. She was sitting alone, her dark hair flowing over her shoulders like a curtain of night complementing her deep, sun-kissed skin. There was something about her that drew my attention instantly, something almost magnetic. Her eyes—piercing and deep brown—met mine the moment I started walking toward her. It felt like time slowed down for a second, and all the noise in the room dulled to a faint hum. I blinked, unsure why she was staring at me like that, as if she'd known me her whole life. There was intensity in her gaze, an emotion I couldn't place, but it was... profound. Her lips parted slightly, as if she wanted to say something but couldn't quite find the words. I felt my heartbeat quicken, not out of fear, but out of confusion. I had no idea what was happening, but something in the way she looked at me made me feel... important, like I was the center of her universe in that moment.I quickly broke eye contact and slid into the seat next to her, my mind racing. I tried to act normal, but I could still feel her eyes on me, as though she couldn't look away. I glanced sideways at her, catching her in my peripheral vision. There was something there—something powerful—but I had no idea what it was.

"Hey," I said quietly, more to break the silence than anything else. My voice seemed to make her snap out of whatever trance she was in. She nodded at me and turned to stare at her book. I could see a deep red blush quickly forming on her cheeks. I tried to keep myself from blushing as well. I turned to stare at Mrs Dorothy as she started the class. The one hour passed by in a blur. I didn't dare turn to look at her again. The bell rang signalling the end of the session. I started placing my textbooks inside my bag when she turned towards me. I glanced up at her. She looked like she was trying to make up her mind about something.

"You're Eugine Swan, right?" she asked, the expression on her face was a mix of apprehension and determination and i could see a twinge of fear. She wore a sleeveless black top that highlighted her athletic frame paired with dark blue jeans. I couldn't take my eyes off her.

"Yeah..." I replied. She extended her hand to me.

"I'm Kira Harlan. A friend of Renesmee's." she introduced herself. I felt static when i reached out to shake her hand.

"Nice to meet you," i replied, "though i've never met Renesmee myself." I said nonchalantly. I had a feeling i was going to see a lot of her in the future.
