Before I begin this story, I just want to take a moment to thank you all for taking this time to read it. I'm not a writer, but part of this story has been bouncing around my head for years.

With that said, I want to come clean about how this story was finally created. I got help from AI. I had to, I tend to write very factually… like a report. I had the story elements, I knew where I wanted these characters to start and where they would end up on this journey, but without help from AI, I wouldn't have been able to take my ideas and put it on 'paper'.

With that said… I welcome you to the first story I've ever written, based on my love of retro gaming and the digital worlds I've been lost in since I was a kid.

Prologue

In the heart of the Mushroom Kingdom, where vibrant colors danced in harmony under a cerulean sky, the landscape unfolded like a painter's masterpiece. Rolling hills of emerald green stretched endlessly, dotted with clusters of cheerful, oversized mushrooms that swayed gently in the warm breeze. Wispy clouds drifted lazily, casting playful shadows over the fields of daisies and tulips that swirled in a kaleidoscope of colors, their fragrances mingling to create a sweet, inviting aroma.

At the center of this enchanting realm stood Peach's Castle, a grand edifice that gleamed like a jewel against the sunlit backdrop. Its tall, spiraled towers, adorned with flags fluttering like butterflies, pierced the sky, while the castle's walls, a soft pastel pink, exuded a warmth that welcomed all who approached. The moat, a shimmering ribbon of crystal-clear water, reflected the castle's beauty, creating a breathtaking mirror image that seemed to captivate even the most hurried of travelers.

Stepping inside the castle was akin to entering a dream. The grand foyer welcomed visitors with a dazzling chandelier made of sparkling crystals, its light cascading down like glimmering raindrops. The walls were lined with portraits of past heroes and whimsical landscapes, each frame telling a story of bravery and adventure. Rich tapestries, depicting the Kingdom's legendary tales, hung gracefully, their intricate designs weaving tales of joy and triumph.

As one wandered through the halls, the scent of blooming cherry blossoms wafted through the air, leading to the royal gardens—an oasis of tranquility where vibrant flowers danced in the breeze, surrounded by meticulously trimmed hedges and winding paths. In the heart of the garden stood a magnificent fountain, its water cascading in gentle streams, catching the sunlight and casting rainbows in every direction.

In the grand castle of the Mushroom Kingdom, the air was thick with a sense of impending monotony. Princess Peach sat in her elegant chamber, her gaze distant, staring out at the vibrant gardens that seemed to mock her with their unchanging beauty. Inside, her childhood friend, Princess Zelda of Hyrule, had come to visit, her bright energy radiating like the sun. But today, Peach found herself wrapped in a shroud of boredom that dulled even the most delightful of conversations.

"Peach! Did you hear?" Zelda chirped, her eyes sparkling with enthusiasm. "Mario is coming to see you! Isn't it exciting? I'm sure he'll be here any minute!"

Peach sighed, rolling her eyes in irritation. "Ugh, who cares? It's always the same thing. Bowser kidnaps me, Mario 'saves' me, I bake him a cake, and then we do it all over again. I'm so over it. Like, at least it would be different if Luigi saved me for once" She motioned to Luigi coming down the stairs in anticipation of seeing his brother "But you're never going to do that."

Luigi, looking ashamed, stared at his feet. "Mario, you know, he's the brave one."

Zelda tilted her head at Peach, genuinely confused. "But… isn't that what makes life fun? Having these little adventures and then going back to normal?"

Peach sighed deeply, frustration etched across her face. "No, Zelda, it's boring. It's like being stuck in the same bad play over and over. I want something different, something exciting. I'm tired of being the prize."

At that moment, Daisy walked in, her warm smile instantly brightening the room. "Hey, Peach! What's going on? You look more annoyed than usual."

Peach crossed her arms, her expression a mix of annoyance and weariness. "Oh, you know, just the usual. Bowser's probably on his way to kidnap me again, and I just don't have the energy for it today."

Daisy shrugged, her tone light and teasing. "Well, you don't have to worry about it, right? Mario will just come and save you. And then you'll have a party, and everything will be back to normal."

"That's exactly the problem, Daisy!" Peach exclaimed, her voice rising in frustration. "There's no change, no excitement, no challenge! Why does everything have to be the same? Why do I always have to be the one waiting to be rescued?"

Zelda, ever the voice of reason, smiled softly. "Maybe you should look at it differently. Maybe being rescued means you're important to someone. That someone cares enough to keep you safe."

"I don't want to be safe, Zelda!" Peach snapped, her eyes flashing with anger. "I want to be free! I want to do something for myself for once!"

Daisy looked at her curiously, her brow furrowing. "What do you mean by that?"

Peach's expression shifted, a sly smirk playing on her lips. "I mean, maybe I'll just leave before Bowser even gets here. Wouldn't that throw him off?"

Zelda gasped, her eyes wide in disbelief. "You can't just leave, Peach! What about the kingdom? What about Mario?"

Peach waved a dismissive hand, her tone defiant. "Mario will be fine. He's always fine. Besides, I'm not running away forever. I just… need a break. A break from all of this."

Daisy's concern deepened. "Are you sure that's a good idea? I mean, what if Bowser really causes trouble this time?"

"Then let him cause trouble. I'm not here to play his stupid game anymore." The weight of her words hung in the air, charged with a newfound determination.

As the sun began to set, casting golden hues across the kingdom, Peach felt a spark of exhilaration igniting within her. The thought of breaking free from her predictable life filled her with a sense of purpose. Maybe, just maybe, she could rewrite her own story. The atmosphere crackled with tension. Princess Peach, her heart racing with determination, made her way swiftly toward The Odyssey, the small ship once used by Mario to traverse the kingdoms. Her usual regal composure was replaced by a fierce resolve as she brushed past frantic Toads, their voices raised in panic over Bowser's imminent arrival.

"Princess! Please, wait! We need you here!" called out the Toad Captain, desperation lacing his voice.

Peach turned around, irritation flashing in her blue eyes. "Why? So I can be kidnapped again? No, thanks. You can handle Bowser without me for once."

Without another word, she climbed into The Odyssey, her fingers flying over the controls as she powered it up. The sails unfurled into a balloon, and within moments, the ship was ready to launch. With a swift motion, Peach took off, leaving behind a chaotic scene of panicked Toads.

As The Odyssey soared into the sky, Zelda and Daisy ran after her, Zelda calling out, her voice tinged with worry. "Peach, please come back! You don't have to do this alone!"

Daisy placed a reassuring hand on Zelda's shoulder, her expression calm but concerned. "Let her go, Zelda. She needs to figure this out for herself."

"But… what if she gets hurt? What if Bowser really—" Zelda protested, her frown deepening.

"Peach has always been stronger than she looks. She'll be okay. We just have to trust her," Daisy replied softly, her faith in her friend unwavering.

Meanwhile, Bowser's massive airship loomed ominously over the Mushroom Kingdom, casting a dark shadow over the castle. With his usual bravado, he burst through the castle doors, ready to enact his well-rehearsed plan.

"Alright, where's Peach?! Time for our usual kidnapping routine!" he bellowed, a wicked grin spreading across his face.

Toad Captain, trembling, stepped forward, his voice shaky. "Uh, your… your badness, Peach isn't here."

Bowser's eyes widened, taken aback. "What do you mean, she's not here? She's always here!"

"Uh… she left. Took The Odyssey and just… disappeared," Toad Captain stammered, the anxiety evident in his voice.

Bowser's confusion morphed into anger, his eyes narrowing. "She left? Without me?! That's… that's not fair! I had a whole kidnapping plan and everything!"

In a corner, Luigi, who had been observing the scene unfold, attempted to slip away unnoticed.

"Hey! You, Luigi. Green guy! You're coming with me instead!" Bowser shouted, spotting Luigi and pointing a clawed finger in his direction.

Luigi's eyes widened in panic. "Wait, what?! No, no, no! I didn't sign up for this!"

Before Luigi could escape, Bowser lunged forward, grabbing him and hoisting him over his shoulder. "If I can't kidnap Peach, then I'll just kidnap her backup! Let's see Mario rescue you this time!"

With that, Bowser stormed back to his airship, Luigi squirming helplessly in his grasp. The chaos left in his wake was nothing compared to the storm brewing inside Peach, who was far away, ready to face the unknown on her own terms.

—-

The castle doors flew open, and Mario strode in, his iconic red hat slightly askew, showing the signs of a long journey. He paused, taking in the scene of panicking Toads and a castle that suddenly seemed much emptier than usual.

"Mario! You're finally here!" Daisy called out, running up to him, her face a mixture of relief and concern.

"What's-a going on?" Mario asked, his voice tinged with exhaustion. "Where's Peach?"

Daisy took a deep breath, trying to keep her emotions in check. "Mario, you won't believe this, but Bowser took Luigi this time!"

Mario's eyes widened in disbelief. "Mamma mia... Every time it's something!" He paused, his voice dropping to a more serious tone. "And what about Peach?"

Daisy hesitated, clearly unsure how to deliver the news. "Peach… well, she took The Odyssey and disappeared before Bowser even showed up. I think she just didn't want to deal with it anymore."

Mario's heart sank. Peach was the cornerstone of the kingdom, always resilient, always there, no matter what. "Peach left? Just like that?"

"Yeah," Daisy said softly, her voice tinged with sadness. "She's been feeling trapped, I guess. Like every day was the same. She just… needed to get away." Daisy straightened her shoulders, trying to put on a brave face. "But Luigi's waiting to be rescued now, so… you know the drill."

Mario nodded, determination hardening his expression. "I'll bring him back. And I'll find Peach, too. One way or another."

Daisy smiled, though her eyes betrayed the worry she felt. "Be safe, Mario. The kingdom's counting on you."

Without another word, Mario turned and set off on his quest, his mind racing with thoughts of what lay ahead. As he crossed the castle's threshold, Daisy turned and walked up to the balcony, gazing out over the sprawling kingdom below. She hugged herself, trying to keep warm against the chilly evening breeze.

"I hope you find what you're looking for, Peach," she whispered, her voice barely audible. "Wherever you are."

—-

As Mario ran, he couldn't shake the nagging worry about Peach. What had driven her to leave? He remembered the times they had spent together, her laughter ringing through the halls of the castle, her spirit unbroken despite the constant threats from Bowser. But now, it seemed the weight of her role as a princess had become too heavy to bear.

He crossed the vibrant landscape, leaping over Goombas and dodging the occasional fireball. The sun dipped lower in the sky, casting long shadows as he reached the outskirts of Bowser's fortress. Mario had faced this place many times, but tonight, it felt different. There was a sense of urgency, a need to rescue his brother and to find Peach before it was too late.

Mario approached the fortress, its dark silhouette looming menacingly against the fading light. He could see the flickering lights from within, a sure sign that Bowser was celebrating yet another victory. With a deep breath, Mario jumped onto the first platform and began his ascent, navigating the obstacles that stood in his way.

Inside the fortress, Bowser was reveling in his success. "Ha! With Luigi in my clutches, I'll finally have the upper hand! And Peach, well… she's probably still sulking somewhere!" He let out a deep, rumbling laugh.

Luigi was locked in a cage nearby, shaking his head in disbelief. "You won't get away with this, Bowser! Mario will come for me!"

"Oh, I'm counting on it, green bean!" Bowser taunted, puffing out his chest. "The more he comes after you, the more I can enjoy this! It'll be the perfect setup for my plan!" Bowser held a mysterious, unfamiliar mushroom, bringing it closer and closer to Luigi.

As Mario made his way through the fortress, he encountered several of Bowser's minions, each more formidable than the last. He dodged attacks and retaliated with swift jumps and fireballs, determination coursing through him. Each enemy he defeated brought him closer to Luigi.

—-

Finally, after what felt like an eternity of battling, Mario found himself in the main chamber, the heart of Bowser's fortress. He spotted Luigi in a cage suspended high above the ground. "Luigi!" Mario shouted, relief flooding his voice.

"Mario! You made it!" Luigi called, his spirits lifting at the sight of his brother. "I knew you would!"

"Don't worry, I'll get you out!" Mario shouted as he looked around for a way to release him. But before he could formulate a plan, Bowser stomped into the room, a wicked grin plastered on his face.

"Not so fast, Mario! You think you can just waltz in here and take my prize? I don't think so!" Bowser roared, blocking the path to Luigi's cage.

Mario stood tall, facing the massive Koopa King. "Let him go, Bowser! This isn't a game anymore!"

"Oh, it's a game alright!" Bowser bellowed, launching into an attack. "And you're the main character!"

The battle began, Bowser charging at Mario with powerful swings and fire breath. Mario dodged and countered, using every trick in his book. He leaped over Bowser's attacks, throwing fireballs and sliding beneath his massive feet.

Bowser let out a furious roar, his hulking form shadowed by the flickering flames of the fortress. Without warning, he charged, his thunderous footsteps shaking the ground as he lunged at Mario. His massive claws wrapped around Mario's throat like a steel vise, the air instantly squeezed from Mario's lungs.

With a violent heave, Bowser slammed Mario to the stone floor, the impact sending a sharp jolt of pain through his entire body. Mario gasped, the breath knocked out of him, and before he could recover, Bowser's claws tore into his back, ripping through his red overalls. Agony exploded in Mario's spine as hot blood dripped down his side, the pain blinding him for a moment.

Mario gritted his teeth, a strangled cry escaping his lips as he clawed at the floor. His vision blurred, the edges of the world darkening, but he knew he couldn't fall here—not like this. Summoning every last ounce of strength, he twisted his body, driving his knee into Bowser's chest with all his might.

Bowser snarled, momentarily knocked back, and Mario scrambled to his feet, his back screaming in protest. The ache turned into a searing burn, and for a brief moment, everything seemed to warp—shapes and colors becoming a swirling, distorted haze. But he forced himself to focus, to push past the pain. There was no room for weakness, not when so much was at stake.

"You can't beat me, you should just take your brother and run back to that little kingdom and wait for your little Princess to return."

As the fight raged on, Mario felt a growing strength within him. He was not just fighting for Luigi; he was fighting for Peach too, hoping to bring them both back to safety. With one final, decisive jump, Mario landed the cage containing Luigi, freeing him and jumping out a nearby window.

Bowser roared, shooting fire in Mario's direction. "You may have gotten away, Mario, but this isn't over!"

The great doors of Peach's Castle creaked open, echoing through the vast throne room as Mario and Luigi stepped inside. Their footsteps, usually so light and cheerful, now sounded heavy and foreboding. Mario's face was etched with frustration, his usual smile replaced with a hardened frown, while Luigi trailed behind, visibly exhausted from their latest adventure. The air was thick with tension as Daisy stood in the center of the room, awaiting their return.

"Mario, Luigi! You're back! Thank goodness," Daisy called out, relief washing over her features. But then she noticed something was wrong. Mario's anger was palpable, and Luigi looked worn to the bone. "But… Peach still isn't here."

Mario stopped in his tracks, clenching his fists so tightly that his knuckles turned white. "I've had it with her, Daisy," he growled, the frustration of countless adventures bubbling to the surface. "This kingdom can't wait around for some spoiled princess who doesn't want to be here. I'm taking over."

Luigi's eyes widened in shock. "W-What? Mario, are you serious? Peach will come back, she always does."

Mario turned to his brother, his eyes blazing with determination. "And in the meantime, what? We let the kingdom fall apart? Someone has to take charge. It's time I did something for this place instead of just cleaning up her messes."

Daisy took a step forward, trying to keep her voice steady. "Mario, I understand you're upset, but this isn't like you. Peach wouldn't want this. She's just… going through something."

"Enough, Daisy!" Mario snapped, his voice echoing through the hall. "You either help me or get out of the way."

Daisy flinched, taken aback by Mario's harshness. It was so unlike him—so different from the hero who always put others first. She took a deep breath, trying to keep her composure. "Fine. I'll help. But you have to promise me, you won't let this power get to your head."

Mario didn't respond. He simply turned away from her, marching toward the throne that once belonged to Princess Peach. "Come on, Luigi. We've got work to do."

Weeks passed, and life in the Mushroom Kingdom changed.

The castle, once bright and welcoming, now stood like a fortress, its walls fortified, and its gates guarded by rows of Toads armed and ready. Mario took control of the kingdom with an iron grip, ordering the citizens to rebuild and reinforce defenses. What was once a peaceful land now felt like it was on the brink of war, with every street patrolled and every town square watched over.

Inside the castle, Mario sat upon Peach's throne, his expression hardened and distant, as he sifted through reports of potential threats from the Koopa Kingdom and beyond. He had expected the role of ruler to be difficult, but he hadn't anticipated how heavy the weight of the crown would feel. Still, he pressed on, convinced that he was doing what was necessary to protect the kingdom.

Luigi watched his brother from the shadows, worry gnawing at his heart. He had tried countless times to talk sense into Mario, to remind him that this wasn't what Peach would want. But each time, Mario dismissed him, too consumed by his new responsibilities to listen. And with every passing day, Mario's demeanor grew colder, his temper shorter.

One evening, Luigi found Daisy standing by a window in the castle, gazing out at the kingdom below. Her usually cheerful face was marred with concern, and her eyes held a sadness that Luigi had never seen before. He approached her cautiously, feeling the weight of his own worry pressing down on him.

"Daisy," Luigi began hesitantly, "I'm really scared for him. For Mario. This… this isn't right."

Daisy nodded, not tearing her eyes away from the kingdom. "I know, Luigi. But what can we do? He's convinced this is the only way."

Daisy and Luigi went back to the throne room to confront Mario. Daisy approached Mario at the throne. Luigi paced back and forth, his hands wringing together in anxiety. "Mario, this can't go on," Daisy said, her voice firm but tired. "The Toads are struggling, the coins are running out, and the Yoshis have all left. We need to rethink how we're running things."

"If the Toads have a problem, they can leave too," Mario retorted coldly. "Maybe they should be working harder instead of complaining."

"Bro, Daisy's right," Luigi chimed in cautiously. "Maybe we should—"

"I don't need advice from either of you!" Mario snapped, slamming his fist on the armrest. "I'm doing what's necessary to keep this kingdom running. If Peach had done her job, none of this would've happened!"

The tension in the throne room hung like a storm cloud, thick and suffocating. Daisy opened her mouth to respond to Mario's outburst when the doors burst open, and the sound of roaring engines filled the space. Peach stormed in, her expression a mix of fury and determination, followed closely by Samus Aran, her imposing figure a stark contrast to the chaos that had unfolded.

"What on earth have you done to my kingdom, Mario?!" Peach's voice pierced through the tension, her eyes blazing with anger.

Mario scoffed, leaning back in his throne with an air of arrogance. "Your kingdom? You mean the kingdom you abandoned? I've done what you couldn't do, Peach—I kept this place together!"

Peach stepped forward, her fists clenched at her sides. "Together? You call this 'together'? The Toads are miserable, the Yoshis have left, and you've drained the treasury dry! This isn't leadership; this is you playing king!"

Mario's jaw tightened, and he rose to his feet, his voice rising. "At least I stayed! I didn't run off whenever things got tough! You think I wanted to take over? You left me no choice!"

Peach's heart raced with indignation. "You think I ran away because things were tough? You don't have a clue why I left, Mario. You think I don't care? I came back for this kingdom! And what have you done? You've proven you're not fit to lead!"

"Maybe we should all take a step back and talk about this," Samus interjected, trying to de-escalate the situation, her voice calm amidst the rising storm.

Mario pointed a finger at Samus, his expression darkening. "Stay out of this! This is between me and Peach!"

Peach felt the sting of betrayal wash over her. "This was never about you, Mario! This kingdom isn't yours to take. It belongs to the people, and you've turned it into a nightmare! You've become everything you used to fight against!"

Mario's eyes flared with rage, and he stepped closer, the air thick with tension. "You think you can waltz back in and take over after leaving us all in the dust? Fine! You want your kingdom back? Take it! See how well you do without me!"

Before Peach could respond, Mario spun on his heel and stormed out of the throne room, his heavy footsteps echoing ominously down the hall. Luigi stood frozen for a moment, torn between his loyalty to his brother and his concern for Peach.

"I'm sorry, Peach. I think he just… he needs time," Luigi murmured, glancing at her with a mixture of empathy and fear.

"Go after him, Luigi," Peach urged softly, her voice trembling with hurt. "He's not thinking straight."

With a heavy heart, Luigi rushed after Mario, leaving the throne room in tense silence. Daisy watched them go, her eyes full of sadness, before turning back to Peach, who stood there, her fury slowly turning into despair.

"I can't stay either, Peach," Daisy whispered, her voice barely above a breath. "I need to make sure they're okay."

Peach nodded, swallowing her emotions. "I understand. Go, Daisy."

Daisy gave Peach one last, lingering look before following the brothers out, leaving Peach and Samus alone in the heavy silence.

Once the door closed, the weight of the situation settled like a thick fog. Peach took a deep breath, trying to calm the storm within her. "Can you believe him?" she exclaimed, her voice rising again. "He's gone mad with power!"

Samus stepped closer, her expression unreadable. "He's struggling, Peach. The burden of leadership can change a person, especially when they feel abandoned."

"Abandoned?" Peach's voice dripped with disbelief. "He was the one who chose to take over without consulting me! This was my kingdom, not his! He had no right to assume control while I was away!"

Samus crossed her arms, her gaze steady. "Perhaps, but he thought he was doing what was best. And the reality is, he needs to understand that leadership isn't just about strength; it's about collaboration and trust."

Peach's eyes narrowed, her anger boiling over once more. "Trust? He's broken that trust! He's turned this kingdom into a shadow of what it once was, and I won't stand by and let him destroy it further!"

Samus took a step forward, her voice firm. "Then you need to confront him. This won't end until you both address what's been done. Your feelings, his actions—they need to be laid bare."

"You think I'm just going to walk back in there and apologize?" Peach shot back, her fists trembling at her sides. "He needs to realize that I'm still the princess, that this is still my home!"

Peach stormed out of the throne room, her fury gradually gave way to something more complex—something that gnawed at her as she replayed the confrontation with Mario in her mind. She stopped in the empty hallway, her heart still racing, but now with something closer to regret.

Had she really given Mario no choice? she wondered, her hands trembling slightly. It was true she had been frustrated—frustrated with the kingdom, with Mario, with everything. But the look in his eyes, the anger masking hurt—was there something more she had missed?

She leaned against the cold stone wall, letting out a long, deep breath. Maybe Samus was right. Maybe Mario had felt abandoned—had felt like the weight of the kingdom was on his shoulders alone.

Peach closed her eyes, willing away the ache in her chest. "I shouldn't have left like that," she whispered to herself. "I should have talked to him sooner. Tried to understand…"

Peach returned to the throne room. Samus gave Peach a look as if she knew Peach would come back. Peach looked into Samus's eyes, seeking the calm resolve that radiated from her. But doubt clouded her mind. "What if he doesn't listen? What if he refuses to accept an apology?"

"Then you push him until he understands," Samus said firmly, her voice unwavering. "You know him better than anyone. Use that to your advantage."

Peach felt her heart racing. "You're right. I can't let him just leave like that." With renewed determination, Peach straightened her back, her expression hardening with resolve. "We need to find him."

Days had passed since Mario and Luigi had disappeared, and Peach's soldiers scoured the kingdom, searching for any trace of them. Each report brought nothing but disappointment, and even Daisy, now back in her homeland, had no idea where they had gone. She had left them after the argument, fearing Mario's anger and hoping the brothers would find some peace on their own.

Weeks later, the tensions that had shaken the Mushroom Kingdom still lingered like a heavy fog. Spring had arrived, with its promises of renewal and growth, but for Princess Peach, there was little relief. She stood on her balcony, gazing out at the vibrant colors of the kingdom below. Despite the blooming gardens, her heart remained clouded with uncertainty and regret.

Samus leaned against the doorway, watching Peach with an unreadable expression. She hadn't left Peach's side since the confrontation in the throne room. The warrior's presence had become both comforting and unnerving—a steady rock in the storm of Peach's emotions.

Peach sighed, sensing Samus behind her. "You're still here," she remarked, glancing over her shoulder, her voice softer than usual, betraying the exhaustion she felt.

Samus pushed off the doorway, walking closer. "I told you I wasn't going anywhere," she replied, her voice light but carrying a trace of concern. "Besides, someone has to make sure you're taking care of yourself."

Peach smiled weakly, though her thoughts still lingered on Mario. She turned to face Samus fully. "I haven't given up on finding him, you know. Or on making things right. I just… I wish I could go back to that moment, before everything fell apart."

Samus nodded, her eyes softening. She took another step closer, standing beside Peach on the balcony. "I get it. You want to fix things. But beating yourself up over it isn't going to change what happened. All you can do is keep moving forward."

Peach exhaled slowly, feeling the weight of Samus's words. She leaned on the balcony railing, her gaze drifting over the gardens below. "I've been trying, Samus. I really have. But every day that passes, it feels like I'm losing a part of him… and of myself."

Samus placed a gentle hand on Peach's arm, grounding her in the present. "You're not losing yourself, Peach. You're still here. And you still have time to make things right—when the time comes."

Peach glanced at Samus, her heart swelling with gratitude for the comfort she provided. Yet beneath that gratitude, something else stirred—something that had been growing quietly in the background since Samus had arrived. It was strange and unexpected, and Peach wasn't quite sure how to deal with it. She wasn't ready to think about that now. There was too much at stake, too much unresolved.

Still, the warmth of Samus's touch lingered.

"You've done more for me than you realize," Peach said softly, her voice carrying more emotion than she intended.

Samus smiled, though there was a flicker of something deeper behind her eyes. "I told you—keeping you safe is part of the job."

Peach's lips curved into a small smile. "Is that all it is?" she asked quietly, her tone carrying a hint of something unspoken.

Samus hesitated for a moment, the space between them charged with tension. She met Peach's gaze directly, her expression serious. "You tell me," she said, her voice low.

Before either could say anything more, a soft knock on the door broke the moment. A small Toad peeked in, wide-eyed and nervous. "Um, excuse me, Princess… and Samus," he stammered. "I just wanted to tell you… the gardens are finally starting to bloom again."

Peach's expression softened, her heart lifting slightly at the news. "Thank you, Toad. That's wonderful."

The Toad nodded and scurried away, leaving Peach and Samus alone again.

Peach turned back to the view, the gardens below brimming with life. "Maybe things are starting to turn around," she murmured, though the weight of everything that had happened still pressed on her. "But I won't let myself forget."

Samus nodded, her gaze following Peach's. "You shouldn't. But don't lose sight of yourself either."

Peach gave a small nod, knowing Samus was right. The guilt and remorse over Mario would never fully disappear, but she couldn't let them consume her. Not when there was so much at stake—and not when Samus was standing beside her, offering a support she hadn't expected but now found herself relying on.

Together, they stood in silence, the blossoming gardens a sign that perhaps, just maybe, healing was on the horizon.
