Chapter 4: Disaster Ahead?
8:00 PM: New York City
As Megumi continued to watch his girlfriend enjoy the piece of cake that she ordered, he was pulled out of that entertainment when his phone began to ring.
He looked at the contact information on the screen and widened his eyes.
Mom?
"Shit, it's my mom. Do you mind giving me a minute?"
Nobara finished chewing on the slice she was eating and responded, "Oh yeah, go right ahead. If it's your mom, it has to be important."
"Thanks. Save me a piece, will you?"
Nobara nodded in understanding and Megumi went outside to answer. When she looked behind her to make sure he was outside, she sliced a bite-size portion of the cake and put it on his plate.
He stole a piece of mine after all.Payback's a bitch. She smirked.
Meanwhile, Megumi had gone outside and accepted the call.
"Hello? Megumi?" Utahime started the conversation.
"Uh... Mom? What's going on?"
"Oh, what? Can't a mother just call her favorite son for no reason whatsoever? Do you not love your mother?"
Utahime's voice had been overcome with a false sense of sadness. She even added in some mimic crying just to make sure her son felt bad for making his poor mother upset.
Fushiguro's face went blank. He rolled his eyes at his mom's overdramatic performance.
"Ha. Ha. Wow, such an Oscar-worthy performance, mom. Brilliant work." He said in a bored voice.
Utahime went back to speaking in her normal tone, "I know. I had planned it out just seconds before you accepted my call. Anyways, let me get to the point."
She smirked before continuing, "Is it true you're bringing a new girl over for your best friend's wedding next week?"
A couple beads of sweat rolled down Megumi's forehead a second after she had said that.
Fuck. How could his mom have found out about Nobara already? He wanted her appearance at the wedding to be a surprise.
Well, now that he was caught, he might as well do what any responsible person would do when in this sort of situation.
Deflect.
"Um, I have no idea what you're talking about."
Utahime was deflecting!
What was it about men that they couldn't just tell the truth? It's not a difficult thing to do. Even when they get caught, they just double down on more lies! He was just like Gojo in that regard. Well, at least Megumi was much more mature than that idiot.
"Like father, like son." Utahime murmured.
She then turned around and noticed that Shoko and Mei Mei were trying to eavesdrop on the conversation.
Utahime's face went red from anger.
"What did I just say? Stop eavesdropping and go move on to Corinthians!" she yelled at the two of them. The two women yelped, and sped back to the couch, pretending that they had done no such thing while opening their Bibles.
She didn't know who was being a bigger pain in the ass right now; her son, Gojo, or her two friends.
Although her husband was currently in California on a business trip, she just knew he was bothering those poor businessmen with his idiotic ideas. Well, at least the house was finally filled with peace and quiet.
"Who are you talking to?" Fushiguro had overheard her yelling something about eavesdropping and Corinthians. Whatever that means..
"Nobody important. Anyways, I'm excited to hear that you're coming back next week. It's been awhile since I last heard of you, Megumi. I'm having the house prepared for both your and your father's arrival. I'm sure you'll run into each other at Haneda Airport." She finished with a laugh, while wearing smug expression on her face.
"Oh? W-where is dad?"Fuck. Was he in New York too? He frankly did not want to run into him before going back home, and much less with Nobara.
Utahime sensed the hesitation in his voice, and laughed "Don't worry, he's in California right now. I just said that because he's supposed to be returning on the same day as you. I recommend you letting your girlfriend know that the house isn't ready for guests yet. Your bedroom is ready for you, but if you'd prefer to stay with her, perhaps you could plan on staying in a hotel nearby?"
"Girlfriend? What are you talking about?"
"Don't play dumb with me, son.Everybody knows already. Your aunts were talking to me nonstop about this Nobara Kugisaki. I can't wait to meet her. Tell me, is she like all the other girls too, Megumi? Only into you just because of the money?"
He gritted his teeth at hearing his mom's comment. She hadn't even met Nobara yet and was already making these false assumptions. Before he was about to respond, he wondered how the hell did word get around so quickly in the first place?
A few seconds later, a young woman walked out of the café. She looked at Fushiguro with a seductive smirk and winked at him while mouthing the words "call me". As she walked away, she also blew a kiss at him.
"Fucking paparazzi" Fushiguro muttered under his breath. That was just great! Now that the populace of Japan knew that he had a girlfriend, all his fan girls would be ready to attack Nobara. She would for sure remember the trip as the worst spring break ever. He had just gotten her to agree to going with him!
He sighed and massaged his nose.
"No, she doesn't even know about that yet."
"Well, she's going to find out sooner or later. I think she would rather hear it from you before your flight next week. After all, how do you think she's going to react when she comes here and finds out who you really are?"
As much as he hated to admit it, his mom was right. Fushiguro had always dropped the subject of his family whenever Nobara asked about them. She knew about his biological parents, but he never told her exclusive details about his life after Gojo had adopted him and Tsumiki.
When he decided to go to college in New York, he saw it as an opportunity for him to start fresh, where he wasn't known for being 'Japan's Number One Bachelor'. He had never met a girl like Nobara Kugisaki before. For one thing, she had a personality and didn't swoon over him just because he was from a rich family.
She was a badass who did not take shit from anybody. Her attitude was like a firecracker.
When they were paired up together for a presentation in their public speaking class, the two of them could not go two minutes without arguing with each other. She took the lead over everything and refused to take 'no' for an answer. She was such a bitch! He wasn't about to fail a class just because of her superiority complex.
He decided to be the bigger person and invited her out for coffee to get to know her better. Even though she acted all mighty and pretended to not care, he knew that she appreciated the invite. While it was an awkward chat at first, they both learned more about the other. Even though their interests weren't common, they set aside their differences to agree on one set presentation idea for class. It was like he had seen a whole new side of Nobara Kugisaki. A side that was caring and compassionate underneath that tough exterior.
Even after the semester ended, the two of them kept touch with each other. Fushiguro later took the risk and decided to ask her out during the summer. He was shocked when she had said yes.
Nobara was just as shocked as he was when she agreed to go out with him. Their public speaking class was over. Like with most college group projects, the minute that the project was graded was the minute that group members would stop speaking to each other. Besides, the two of them did not have anything in common! Their first date would be a total disaster.
Funny enough, Nobara ended up being glad that she had said yes. She did not want their first date to end! They had spent the entire day exploring all the major attractions that New York had to offer.
As a little girl, Nobara loved visiting Broadway and Times Square during the summer. Before becoming a shopaholic, she loved going to M 's New York, where she filled up her candy bags with as many M 's as she could. She often forgot that she had to pay for the delicious candy bag before she could eat any, but it was okay because she was just a child after all. Her parents were still responsible for paying the consequences of her actions.
Fushiguro laughed at that memory. He later decided to talk about his love for dogs to her. His dogs were everything to him. He talked about how he became closed off after they had died, and Nobara had shed a few tears after hearing that story.
A few months after they started dating, Nobara had informed Fushiguro that she had wanted to talk to him in his dorm. At first, he was afraid that she was going to break up with him, but she assured him that it wasn't about breaking up.
When she arrived at his dorm, she had told him to sit down and cover his eyes. He was honestly scared; he didn't know what she had planned to do to him. A lot of questions were running through his mind.
Did she find out the truth about my family? Is she planning on robbing me right now?
A few seconds later, Nobara whistled, and she told him to open his eyes. Once he opened them, he noticed that an Akita dog had shown up. Nobara had told him that it was her anniversary gift for him.
Fushiguro was shocked that Nobara had actually gone so far to have gotten him a dog. At that moment, Fushiguro knew that Nobara was the right girl for him. Without hesitation, he leaned down and made eye contact with her and gave her a very passionate filled kiss. The two of them had turned crimson red after, and while they never spoke of that moment again, the two of them had savored the kiss.
Utahime had chimed into Fushiguro's thoughts,
"Alright Megumi, seeing as how you are in your own world right now, I will let you go. I hope for your sake, you end up telling your girlfriend about everything before next week. See you soon."
Once his mom had hung up the phone, Megumi shook his head to clear his mind. He mentally prepared himself for the hellish week that was going to come. He sighed quietly to himself.
A minute later, Fushiguro went back inside the café where he had caught Nobara eating the remaining portion of her cake. He noticed that while she did save him a piece, it was honestly the tiniest piece of cake he had ever seen in his life.
"Oh, hey welcome back!" Nobara said, giving her boyfriend a big Cheshire-cat grin. "I made sure to save you a piece like you asked!"
Fushiguro cocked an eyebrow at her. He noticed that she still had bits of cake left in her teeth. He shook his head in a playful manner. God, she was such a child sometimes.
"Wow, quite a big piece you saved me. I'm honored."
Nobara held back a snicker, "Aw, poor little baby. Don't be like that. After all, you started it."
"I have no idea what you're talking about."
"I'm sure you don't. Anyways, how's your mom? Is everything okay?"
After eating the piece his girlfriend left, he nodded, confirming that everything was good back at home, and that his mom was preparing everything for their arrival. Nobara smiled and went back to eating her slice.
In the meantime, he had to plan out how he was going to prepare Nobara to face his crazy rich family.
Fuck.
Looks like Nobara Kugisaki isn't quite ready for Japan after all.
AN: Next chapter is the first drama-filled one. There will be many. Stay tuned!
