Chapter 5: You're WHAT?
March 23, 2024
New York, NY
Finally, the start of spring break.
For most college students, spring break was the best week of the second semester. One whole week off to recover from the monstrosity that is midterms.
It was also the week where Megumi Fushiguro would be returning to Tokyo with his new girlfriend.
As for Megumi, he was currently in a very peeved mood.
Don't get him wrong. He always wore a scowl on his face whenever he was around others minus Nobara, but after that phone call with his mom, he was starting to regret ever telling his family that he would come back home for his best friend's wedding.
What, with their relationship being the talk of all of Japan right now, it wasn't safe for either of them to make a public appearance!
He wasn't sure if Nobara could handle the publicity that she would encounter with being his girlfriend. Although Nobara was a badass, he still couldn't help but worry about how she would react to the wrath of his rabid fangirls. For one thing, she didn't know how popular he was back in Tokyo! But that was another conversation that he had to prepare for all together.
While Megumi knew she could defend herself, he just knew things would get ugly! He personally wouldn't blame her, but it would only make their already negative reputation sink lower.
Most people in Japan thought that being the adopted son of rich businessman Satoru Gojo would be so much fun. His dad practically owned the entire country! Many businesses were connected to the Gojo family in one way or another. With Satoru being the only living member left, tremendous amounts of profit ended up hitting his bank account nearly every business day.
While Gojo did spoil the shit out of his cute kids with all that money, Megumi did not really care for it. Why you ask? Because that money wasn'this. He didn't earn a single penny of the money! What was sad is that his past girlfriends didn't fucking care. The fact that he would inherit Satoru Gojo's wealth was what brought them all to his doorstep and fight over who would become Megumi's queen.
He didn't need a queen. He would be just fine with a princess. And lucky for him, he found his princess in the form of one girl named Nobara Kugisaki.
Megumi remembered all the hate-filled glares and snide comments he would receive from the other kids in his class as well as the obnoxious number of flirtations and love letters that girls would stuff in his locker. He could deal just fine with the other boys who tried to do something. Just a few good kicks in their sensitive area were good enough for them to fuck off. It also got him a bunch of suspensions, but he turned out just fine.
As for the love letters, well he made sure to throw all of them down the garbage chute.
No,scratch that, he had kept a few of them. He didn't read them, no of course not, but he just knew that they would be of good use one day.
When Nobara had gotten him his dog, who he named Shiro, he had trained him to make sure that he did all of his business on the envelopes. Those letters made for good poop bags as well whenever he ran out.
"Who's a good boy? Shiro is a good boy!"He smiled at the memory of awarding Shiro with beef jerky for his good behavior.
Although the chaos would be incredible during the trip, Megumi had no choice. He could not back out of going back home. Not showing up would be the worst option. A lot of people were excited to hear that he agreed to come back home. Especially after he went no contact ever since moving to New York.
While Itadori was, and still is, a huge pain in his ass, he was still his best friend. He didn't want to disappoint him by backing out of the wedding on such short notice. Besides, Itadori would never let him live it down. He'd be sure to mope about his best man betraying him for the rest of his life.
Pushing those thoughts aside, he began heading in the direction to Nobara's dorm. He only had less than a day, but he was positive his plan was going to work. He needed to come clean.
It was time for Nobara Kugisaki's crash course on the real Megumi Fushiguro.
Meanwhile, Nobara had just finished packing her luggage for the flight to Tokyo tomorrow. She was so excited to not just meet her boyfriend's family and friends, but to also explore the city. Her parents would always talk about the beautiful city life that Tokyo offered, and Nobara couldn't wait to see it in-person for the first time.
She already marked down potential destinations to where she wanted to go. She wanted to visit the Tokyo Tower, the Shinjuku Gyo-en National Gardens as well as Shibuya Crossing. She couldn't stop thinking about how fun her spring break was going to be! Honestly, she couldn't wait for today to be over. She just wanted to hop on that plane!
She already picked out what she was going to wear to meet Megumi's family. With help from her grandmother, she decided on wearing a stylish red summer dress with gold flats. Nobara had initially wanted to wear something more casual, but her grandma advised her that dressing modestly would help her make a good first impression.
She also packed a traditional cocktail dress that she would wear to Itadori's wedding along with another pair of comfortable flats. The reception would involve some dancing after all and she planned on busting a move or two on the dancefloor. She just hoped Fushiguro knew how to dance.
A vision of Fushiguro attempting to dance entered Nobara's mind for a minute and it had her dying of outrageous laughter. Yeah, she would make sure that he knew how to dance before he thought about embarrassing her like that.
Her thoughts were interrupted when she heard a knock on her door. She instantly prepared to defend herself.
"Are you a criminal?"
"No, I left my getaway car at home."
Nobara calmed herself down. There was only one person she knew that would quote Taylor Swift songs like that.
In a quick second, she opened the door, and happily let her guest inside.
"Hey, what's going on? You ready for Tokyo? Because I think Tokyo isn't ready for us!" She took this moment to motion towards the excessive amount of luggage that she had currently packed.
Oh, jeez. Megumi sweatdropped. What was she thinking? It was just a small spring break trip. it's not like they were going to Cancun or something.
Truthfully, he would rather end up going to Cancun though. At least then he wouldn't have to worry about seeing any of his crazy family or friends.
He frowned at his thoughts while Nobara continued,
"I know you might end up being busy with helping Itadori and all, but I was thinking that we could set some time to do some sightseeing. I'm bringing my Polaroid too just so that I can capture these moments in HD. Maybe, we could also take some cute selfies together at Shibuya Crossing."
Megumi noticed that she couldn't contain her excitement, and although he understood her feelings completely, he still had a job to do, and time was scarce. He had to make sure what Nobara was getting into.
Nobara noticed his frown.
"Fushiguro? You okay?"
"….We need to talk" he muttered,
She did not like the sound of his voice right now.
"Uh, okay." she said hesitantly.
He tried to find the right words to begin his confession. Once he did, Megumi responded in a more audible tone, "I haven't been completely honest with you regarding my family back home. I honestly did not want to have to end up telling you all this, but after the phone call I had with my mom, I feel like now is an appropriate time."
Before Nobara could ask for clarification, he continued "So, you know how I came from Japan to study here in New York, right?"
Nobara slowly nodded.
"So, before I came to America, I became the adopted son of one of the most popular businessmen in Japan. His name is Satoru Gojo, and he quite literally owns the entire country. But even though Gojo is the wealthiest man in Japan, the money he has isn't mine."
"Unfortunately, a lot of girls back home did not understand that. I've had tons of girlfriends ever since I was 15, and all of them weren't interested in me for being Megumi Fushiguro, but for being the son of Satoru Gojo. There were even instances where their parents would try to propose an arranged marriage between us just so that their daughters could have a chance at earning a cut of Gojo's wealth. Luckily, my parents saw through their ulterior motives and rejected every advance."
"I couldn't believe how desperate these people were. Willing to throw away their entire lives for the chance of inheriting the family wealth. I didn't give a shit about any of my dad's money. I was your average student while I was in high school. I studied, got good grades, and hung out with Itadori and some of his friends every now and then. I honestly didn't really like them. They're too extroverted for my liking."
How Itadori stayed sane with all those friends he had was beyond Megumi, but Itadori didn't really have a problem, so he just left it at that.
"All those contributing factors just further swayed my decision in moving to America for university. I decided to ghost everybody back home to focus on myself. Not because I wanted to. But it was worth it. I was genuinely happy the first time I had stepped off that plane into New York. For once, I wouldn't be known for who my dad was, and I could be a typical college student. I know NYU tuition is crazy expensive, and frankly, I did not want to ask my dad if he could pay for it. So, I decided to get some part-time jobs to make some cash for tuition and other necessities. It wasn't a big deal though; I'd rather be making money than getting blacked out drunk on a Saturday night."
"I'm happy that you're coming with me back home for Itadori's wedding. I just want to warn you that everybody in Japan knows about our relationship. This wouldn't be considered a problem if I wasn't the son of you know who, but unfortunately, a lot of people are not pleased about 'Japan's Number One Bachelor' being taken, so everybody is likely going to be on our asses the entire trip. I understand if you want to back out of going after hearing all this, I won't be mad if you do." He sighed after he finished.
Nobara stayed silent while her brain processed all the information Fushiguro had told her.
She couldn't believe it. How was she supposed to react to this?
How did hewanther to react?
What bothered her wasn't finding out that he was rich. On the contrary, she empathized with him because she knew he truly did not give a shit about how rich he was.
He lied about who he really was. That was what wasn't okay with her.
A part of her wanted to cuss him out for keeping this information hidden from her.How could he?Nobara told him everything! She would never have kept these kinds of secrets from him. If she was from a rich family, she would have no problem letting the whole world know!
Nobara came from a lower-middle class immigrant family. She resided in Queens ever since she was born. She never liked the area because there wasn't much to do there. She constantly expressed her dislike towards her classmates and if she felt that she was being talked badly about, well she would make sure those bitches burned in hell.
However, just because she was open about hating them, did not mean that she found it acceptable for her classmates to act the same towards the other kids. When she caught a couple of boys bullying a girl named Fumi, she gave them a beating that they would never forget. Fumi later thanked Nobara for defending her, and they ended up becoming close friends. She was the first friend that Nobara enjoyed talking to and playing with.
Nobara's babysitter, Saori, also brought a smile to her face every day. Saori was a very kind and loving girl, who Nobara aspired to be like when she was older. She would always help her with her homework and would always cheer her on when Nobara played on her GameCube. Fumi would join the pair sometimes as well. The girls enjoyed playing their favorite games together on the console. Pac-Man World 2 was their favorite!
After Saori graduated from high school, she left Queens to attend college in Florida. While Nobara was originally depressed for weeks after, Fumi was still by her side, and she made sure to treasure her company.
When she made it to high school, Nobara prioritized her academics over all things. Her goal was to attend NYU, and she knew how competitive getting into that school was, so she made sure to not just aim for straight A's, but to also talk with her teachers and counselors and see if they could put in a letter of recommendation. She even sacrificed shopping blowout sale events at her favorite shops opting to get an extra hour or two of studying.
At the end of the day, it was worth it. Nobara Kugisaki got accepted into NYU, graduating from high school in the top 10% of her put in the hard work to become the badass young woman that she was today. For her boyfriend to tell her that he was crazy fucking rich, well she was at a complete loss for words. She hated liars! Her original plan for cussing him out was put to rest, and she opted to remain silent.
Fushiguro wondered what Nobara was thinking. She had been quiet for a few minutes now.
"Nobara?"
She did not respond, and the silence in the room ended up being heavy for nearly ten minutes, until Nobara did something that Megumi had never expected.
She slapped him across the right side of his face, allowing for a stingy red hand mark to present itself on his cheek.
Fushiguro hissed, "Fuck!"
As he placed a hand to rub the affected area, he looked back down at Nobara, who had tears in her eyes.
She looked at him with a look of regret for what she did and said one word.
"Why?"
"Huh?" He asked, still rubbing the right side of his cheek.
"You could've just told me the truth, Fushiguro. Did you honestly think that I would turn into some sort of lovesick woman if you had told me that you were rich?"
Megumi blinked, "Well honestly, we're just comfortable." he said in a soft voice. He left her first question unanswered.
She wanted to slap him again, but she brushed that decision away. Nobara couldn't help it, and a few more tears prickled and started to slide down her cheeks.
She took a deep breath, "Before I got to know you, I honestly thought you were a cold and distant piece of shit who thought he was better than anyone else just because of whatever reason. You never talked to anyone in class. You always sat near one of the exit doors just so that you wouldn't be bothered and could make a break for it whenever you wanted. Hell, you were just as upset as I was when we found out we were paired for that project for our public speaking class! I just knew it was going to be a stressful assignment."
He knew that feeling all too well. The two of them could not stand each other.
"Don't you remember, Fushiguro? We loathed each other two years ago. We just let our differences slide for that stupid project. Realistically, we should have stopped speaking to each other after, but for some reason, we kept contact." She roughly chuckled.
"I was so surprised when you had texted me asking if I wanted to go out. To tell you the truth, I don't know why I said yes. I still don't know the exact reason why. But you know what? I don't regret it, because you showed me a whole different version of you. You're the only guy I've gone out with that didn't try so hard to please me."
"I never cared about what the boys in my class thought of me, they personally were all too stupid for my liking. Since being a tomboy was considered a turn-off for most guys, I just decided to use that to my advantage and focus on my education. I worked my ass off to get into this school, and for you to tell me all this; I honestly don't even know what to say."
"A part of me truthfully despises you right now. Not for being rich, I don't give a shit about whatever money you have. I worked hard to make sure I would have enough cash to pay off my own crap as well. I hate the fact that you lied! I told you everything about me during our first date, Megumi! I don't like keeping secrets. They just end up causing more problems further along. Like right now for example." Nobara finished her last sentence with a raspy voice and looked towards the floor so he wouldn't be able to see the uncontrollable tears falling.
Fushiguro did not know how to respond to that. She was right; He messed up by not telling her the truth earlier. There was no way around it.
He felt like an idiot right now. He just wanted to vomit and melt into a puddle as quickly as possible. If Nobara broke up with him right there, he wouldn't hold her against it. It's what he deserved for fucking up.
Shit.
How was he supposed to apologize? He's never been in a situation like this before. Girls accepted dog kisses as apologies, right? But he couldn't just leave her alone right now, that would just make him look like a coward.
He brought himself down to make direct eye contact with her, and he noticed she was still looking down to the floor. He cupped her chin upwards, and their gazes met.
She was still trying to control her tears, and he sighed sadly, "You're right about that. I shouldn't have kept things from you at all. You have every right to tell me to get lost, to break up with me, and to never speak to you again. But honestly, I don't know what I would do without you, Nobara. You are so different from all my past girlfriends. For one thing, you have a personality and a brain."
She lightly smiled at that compliment, which caused Megumi to return the look before he continued, "You're extremely badass. I know you can defend herself from anything that comes your way. And while I know things may turn out chaotic this spring break, I'll be by your side. I know that you'll be able to handle meeting my family. Once again, I'm sorry that I lied to you."
Fushiguro brought himself closer to her and wiped the tears from the corners of her eyes.
He finished with an edge of pleading in his voice, "Butpleasedon't leave me hanging with Itadori. You know I won't manage."
Nobara couldn't help but laugh in response. Honestly, she would consider just ditching him and have him suffer with Itadori for a whole week. It's what he deserved for lying to her. But she was the bigger person, and she wouldn't even wish something so cruel on him. Hanging out with Itadori was such a headache sometimes!
"Alright, you baby, stop the act. I forgive you, I'm glad that you finally decided to come to your senses and tell me the truth. Better late than never. Don't worry about me, if any of your fangirls try to start something with me, I'll make sure they remember who they're messing with." Nobara viciously smirked.
Fushiguro returned the smirk, "Be on your best behavior. Nothing that could get you in trouble. I don't want to end up having to bail you out of jail again."
"That was one time, dude! Plus, that bitch deserved it after stealing my sunglasses."
"Ouch. The audacity."
Nobara rolled her eyes, and then crossed her arms and looked at him with a pout.
Megumi snorted, "Anyways, I got to finish packing a few more things before our flight tomorrow. I plan on dropping Shiro off at the dog hotel in the morning before we head to the airport. If you want to give him a goodbye before we leave, feel free to stop by later."
"Don't worry, I will. I'll bring him some jerky!"
"Cool. See you later." He gave her a quick goodbye kiss and made his way out her dorm.
Once he left, Nobara took this opportunity to look back on their conversation. It looks like this spring break would be like an episode from a reality show. She didn't care if she was seen as some sort of villain to his family back home; what did they know about her anyway? They couldn't make these false assumptions before getting to know her.
But perhaps she could turn into a lovesick woman just for next week. If his exes thought that Nobara Kugisaki was a gold digger, then she would gladly brag about her boyfriend for the entire those women seethe would be the highlight of her vacation.
With that image flooding her mind, Nobara laughed evilly and went back to figuring out what else she would need to take for the week.
