Pregnancy

Eva knew she wasn't being rational, and she knew she wasn't being fair, but she also knew this wasn't her fault. How was she supposed to deal with the emotional imbalance that came with pregnancy?

"They didn't have any gumdrops?" She could hear the wine in her voice but would do nothing to change it. She wanted to cry.

"They had no gumdrops." Sparda stood at the bedroom door, lingering cautiously as he watched his love rock on the rocking chair. The fireplace was burning beside her, keeping her warm as snow flurried outside. Her stomach was large despite being in such early stages of pregnancy.

They suspected twins.

"Did you go to the toy store? They always have gumdrops."

"I checked there as well, my love. There are no gumdrops."

It was less that they didn't have gumdrops, and more that they were closed. Sparda had considered breaking in to steal the gummy treats for his craving love, but he thought better of it. Eva cared deeply about the little old man who ran the shop and would be devastated to hear his shop was broken into.

Stopping the rocking motion, Eva eyed Sparda skeptically. She was no longer feeling sad about not having the sugary treat. Now she was upset. Demon or not, he could be hard to read if one wasn't paying attention but Eva always paid attention to him.

Her eyes narrowed as his shoulders slightly tensed. "How did you check the toy store if it's closed?"

"They were open when I left." Sparda lied without missing a beat. He hated lying to the woman, and had never told a lie to her before she became pregnant. After countless battle wounds caused by the truth, he had gone into self preservation mode. If he lied to her, he was safe. "It was the first place I checked."

"So there really are no gumdrops?" All aggression faded from Eva instantly and her bottom lip trembled as it jolted out to form a pout. Her eyes widened and watered as she watched the man standing in front of her with adoring eyes. "Thank you for going for me."

Sparda grew uncomfortable by the sudden shift of emotion. It almost made him feel bad about lying to the pregnant woman. He probably could have traveled across town to see if anyone carried the candy. If he wasn't so concerned about leaving her unprotected he would have.

Walking closer to the pregnant woman as she reached out a hand for help, he gently pulled her to her feet and held her as she steadied. He kept a hold on her even as she did.

Walking in silence, he let her lead until they were at the bed. She gently pushed him away as she laid down but didn't fight as he moved the covers around her to warm her.

It was a cold night and the fireplace was too far to keep them truly warm. Sparda considered keeping it lit through the night for the woman but the risk of it starting a fire concerned him.

"Lay down with me." Eva mumbled, moving the covers on his side of the bed so he was able to slide in beside her. She covered him as he did as told. "It's a cold night."

"It is." Sparda agreed, wrapping the woman in her arms and holding her close. It wasn't often that Eva was tender, but these moments happened more often with her pregnancy. "It's snowing outside."

"We should go for a walk in the snow tomorrow." Eva shifted, finding a more comfortable place and burying her nose in the crevice of Spardas neck. She breathed him in, his scent offering a comfort no other sent would.

No other scent but Cookies.

Cookies sounded good right now.

"Sparda?"

"Yes, love."

"Do we have any cookies?"

Sparda resisted the urge to groan. They had cookies, but not the ones Eva was probably craving at the moment. The last time he had brought her what they had she had thrown it at him and cried when he was hit. It took him an hour to calm her down.

He let go of his pregnant love.

"I'll be back."

He should have broken into the toy store.

End

It's been a long while, right? I've found myself writing little fluff pieces for SpardaXEva and have been sitting on this short piece for a while now. I just thought I'd share the love a little.

I'm also working on a Dante/Lady piece, but I'm not sure I'll ever post it.

I hope you enjoyed this :)
