"Birth and death , cradle and grave... the rest is Silence."
Zeus and his siblings were on the path of winning this war. The "Golden Age" of the Titan Lord Kronos was drawing to a close . He had not even been born yet , but somehow he still knew what he was and what his Creation meant. He had been created by the Moirai, a splash of color on their ever-changing tapestry , his essence drawn from the sleeping Earth Mother. The daughters of Ananke had always been impartial..they favoured the Gods , yes , but the Titans too needed a chance. That was all they would get , of course...a chance . Kronos would get a chance to reclaim his throne , an aid from Fate itself. He didn't feel sad about his fate..the end would be glorified by history , however short his life was.
෴
The Underworld seemed a pitiful place to spend the rest of his life. The Goddess Styx , choosing to help the Olympians imprisoned him within her waters . He wondered how the deity knew of his Fate. Perhaps the Moirai had told her ?
What would have destroyed even lesser immortals and all monsters or mortals did not leave a mark on him. It seemed Styx was not fated to end him.
It was peaceful here , he learnt eventually. Water felt safe to him now. He wondered how long he would be kept here. Was the War still raging on in Gaia's domain ? He wished the ones above never learnt of him.
For the first time since his Creation, he wondered whether Fate would let him be , for now.
෴
He could not remember leaving the Underworld. Staring at the Giant in front of him , he realised the Inexorable nature of Fate. The strength and resolve he had gathered a while ago seemed to vanish, leaving him week and defenseless. The Fates had been clear , his death would give the one who sacrificed him the power to overthrow the eternal gods. He himself, he was just an innocent creature , a tool of Fate. He could not fight this immortal giant. The Adamantine axe glinted in the light of the sacrificial flames , promising demise to all who faced it.
He felt fear , for the first time. Fear of that sharp shining edge .
Soon , he knew no more of this mortal world.
Far above him , the eagle swooped down , it's destination clear.
෴
He had not realised he would be made to reform , as the other monsters did. The Titans would win now , wouldn't they ? What need did the threads of Fate have of him now ?
Tartarus whispered in the Ancient Tongue ... tales of an eagle foiling the plans of the Giant under orders of Zeus , the fall of Kronos and the new reign of the Eternal Gods.
He realised , then. The Gods would still have enemies. His Fate was not yet complete.
෴
The sunlight was a startling sight , after so many millennia of hellish darkness. He was swimming again, he realised happily, but the water was ... different. This was not the Stygian waters of the realm of the Dead. It was fresher , in a way.. full of life. He wondered whether any remembered his tale. Did the Gods still hold sway over the Earth ?
෴
The small creatures surrounded him , somehow recognising the importance of his existence, chattered in abundance. Though he could not understand their words , he knew they were frightened and exited ... just like him , he mused to himself.
There were other wondrous creatures swimming alongside him , now. Horses , he remembered . Poseidon had created these creatures... but they roamed on land , didn't they ? These had fins.. and seemed perfectly comfortable at the bottom of some ocean. Lost in thought, he did not see the fishing net blocking his way. By the time he realised he could not move any further , it was too late. He tried to swim , but it was useless. His serpentine tail had tangled with the wires , keeping him in place. He wondered , had the Parcae planned this ? Would he wait here indefinitely until his eventual killer arrived ?
Above him , the water swirled as the hippocampi caused a ruckus, trying to help their new friend.
෴
The boy with green eyes seemed too young to be a killer. The boy's eyes were startling, he thought , reflecting the colour of the sea perfectly. He tried to speak to him , and he thought he said something too , but neither could understand the other. That was when the boy brought out a sharp sword and he screamed and thrashed , fearful of his life. Later , he would realise that had been his own folly. He could not escape from the one who was destined to slay him... Fate would never allow it. The boy put his sword away and he could breathe peacefully again. He watched , amazed as the sea creatures and the boy worked together to free him from the net. The boy left and he decided to stay nearby ... perhaps the boy would protect him when his time came ? Fate did allow choices , after all. He would remember the name he had christened him , "Bessie."
෴
The boy didn't seem to notice him, he realised. He was always surrounded by others , so he dared not reveal himself, but the boy didn't come near the water again.
There was a satyr with the boy who somehow understood what he meant. Grover explained what he was to the demigod son of Poseidon , and another girl told the mortals about his story. He wished he could hear , but Grover didn't translate that ...
That was when the enemies suddenly appeared. He could feel the pull of Destiny even as he hid underwater ... someone with the Fate-given right to slay him was nearby..
෴
The boy , Perseus, Grover said his name was , prayed to his father and sacrificed the invulnerable pelt of the Nemean Lion. Just so he could be granted safe passage through the waters.
The satyr on his back recounted adventures he had shared with the young selfless demigod.
"Bessie" , he thought as he swam through the seas ... perhaps that wouldn't be such a terrible name after all...
෴
The boy pleaded with the Olympian Gods to not kill him. He could not believe they would ever agree ... he was Fated to be their doom, afterall.
Swimming through the enchanted sphere of water , he wondered what this boy meant to Fate. Would the Moirai truly allow a demigod to circumvent his Destiny ?
His answer came with the whispers of Gaia stirring. He realised that he was essentially immortal, until someone successfully prevailed over the Eternal Gods and sacrificed her entrails. And the Gods seemed to have no shortage of enemies.
He couldn't run from Fate , but he could enjoy this short reprieve. After all , the Gods themselves would rule only upto when the Moirai allowed them to. The daughters of Necessity were feared for a reason, after all.
