NEXT DAY...
The sun had barely risen over DK Island when Funky Kong awoke with a heavy heart. He had spent the night tossing and turning, plagued by thoughts of Daisy's pain and the accusations thrown at him. He knew he had to make things right, but the weight of his own pride held him back. He picked up his guitar and began to strum, the music acting as a balm to his troubled soul.
Back at Peach's Castle, the atmosphere was tense. Daisy was still in bed, nursing her bruised ego and stomach. Peach had insisted on checking on her, her eyes full of worry.
Peach: Daisy, sweetie, you need to get up. We have to sort this...
Daisy groaned and sat up, her face etched with doubt.
Daisy: I don't know if I can look at that guy the same way...I-...(sighs)
Peach: Look, Daisy, I know Funky can be a bit much sometimes, but I've known him for years, and he's not one to hit someone, especially a friend like you. Let's talk to Mario and see if he can get to the bottom of this. Maybe it was just a misunderstanding.
Daisy nodded hesitantly and slowly got out of bed. The day ahead was going to be a challenge, but she knew she had to face it.
Mario was already up, pacing back and forth in the main hall, his hands behind his head. He looked up as Peach and Daisy approached.
Mario: Hey, have you guys talked to anyone?
Peach: Not yet, but we need to figure this out, I was planning a sports game today and I don't want these two to be scrabbling with each other again during it, making the rest of us feel utterly embarrassed.
Daisy looked down, her eyes filled with sadness.
Daisy: I'm just not sure if I'm ready to see him again...not after what he allegedly did to me...
Mario: (Nods) I understand, but we can't let this ruin our friendship or this...supposed...game? Uh, a-Peach can I meet you downstairs for a moment?
Peach nodded and left the room, leaving Daisy with her thoughts. As she descended the grand staircase, she noticed the quiet whispers of the Toads, their eyes darting towards her with a mix of pity and confusion.
Mario: (Whispers) So, about that game you mentioned...what's the deal?
Peach: (Sighs) I thought it would be a good idea to have everyone play sports games, you know, to ease the tension and maybe get everyone's mind off the recording. It's something we used to do back in the day, before everyone started getting so... serious.
Mario: (Rubs his chin) Ehhh...you know how the baseball games went...so why are you doing this again?
Peach: (Grins) Because, Mario, sometimes we need to remember that we're all friends here. Besides, it's just...well... a game, and everyone needs a little fun to blow off steam.
Mario: (Nods slowly) Alright, I guess you're right. But what game do you have planned?
Peach: Well, I thought we could do like a...dodge ball type of game across the whole park area.
Mario: Whaaa? Dodge ball, with teams?
Peach nodded with excitement in her eyes.
Peach: Yes! We split up into two teams and have a friendly match.
Peach: Aaand, the captains of the teams are on one life, if they get hit by any member of the opposing team, the whole team loses automatically. If a team member gets hit, they're out until their captain tags them back in. Think of it like a... a... a royal tag, like in tag, but with more... strategy!
Mario raised an eyebrow, contemplating the potential chaos that could unfold from such a game.
Mario: Peach, are you sure this is a good idea? With everyone's nerves already on edge, I'm not sure a game that could potentially knock someone out...permanently...is the best way to go.
Peach's smile didn't waver, her eyes shimmering with excitement as she explained the rules of her dodge ball tournament.
Peach: It'll be perfect, Mario! It's just a friendly game to lighten the mood, and everyone loves dodge ball!
Mario: (Shakes his head) Peach, you know how competitive everyone can get, especially with the stakes being so...unusual.
Peach: (Places a reassuring hand on his shoulder) Trust me, it'll be fine. Besides, we need something to bring us all together again.
Mario sighed and went along with Peach's idea as they both returned back to the room Daisy was in.
Mario: Daisy, Peach has something to tell you, it might cheer you up.
Daisy looked at them with a hint of skepticism.
Daisy: What is it?
Peach: I've planned a dodge ball tournament today in the park. It's going to be everyone split into two teams, aaaand the captain is basically on one life, if you get hit once, the whole team loses.
Daisy: T- that sounds fun but...I don't know if I can play with everyone still...upset...
Peach: Oh, come on Daisy, it'll be good for you to get some exercise and fresh air, plus it's a great way to clear your head.
Daisy: (Sighs) Okay, fine. But only if we can talk to Funky first. I can't just pretend everything's okay.
Mario: (Nods) That's fair. We'll go find him once everyone arrives for the game and try to sort it out...hopefully...
BACK AT DK ISLAND...
Funky Kong was still solemly strumming his guitar, playing mildness, yet corelated triads watching the near-by sea fold over itself repeatedly.
Funky: (Sings to himself) "Sometimes, we all just need to take a step back, and look at the bigger picture, you know?"
Donkey Kong, who had been quietly watching from the doorway, walked in, his eyes filled with concern.
Donkey Kong: Hey, buddy, you okay?
Funky: (Stops playing) Not really...I just can't get that image out of my head...her...just...looking at me like that...
Donkey Kong: Funky, I don't know what to tell you anymore, but she's just over it with you at this point I think...
Funky: (Defensive) What? No, she's not! She's just tired, that's all! And that Waluigi...he's the one causing all this mess!
Donkey Kong: (Sighs) Funky, maybe it's time to step back and look at things from her perspective, okay? You've been acting differently around her, and not everyone appreciates your...let's call it "new charm."
Funky's eyes narrowed, his grip on the guitar tightening.
Funky: (Standing up) What do you mean, "new charm"? I'm just being me!
Donkey Kong: (Puts his hands up) Alright, alright, I didn't mean it like that. I just mean, maybe try to be more considerate of her feelings. She's not just some girl you can mess around with, she's a friend...and maybe more.
The words hit Funky like a ton of bricks. He knew DK was right, but the thought of losing Daisy's friendship was too much to bear.
Funky: (Sits back down) I know, I know...it's just...I don't know how to fix it, man.
Donkey Kong: (Pats him on the back) You'll figure it out. You're a smart banana, you always do. Just remember, we're all here for you, and we all just want to make sure everyone's happy.
The conversation ended with an awkward silence that filled the room like a thick fog. Funky knew he had to do something; he just didn't know what it was.
BACK IN THE MUSHROOM KINGDOM...
Peach: (To Mario) Have you seen the list of guests I've made?
Mario: (Nods) Yeah, I did, it's...quite long.
Peach: (Grinning) Well, the more the merrier, right? And with the tension between everyone, the more people we have to distract them, the better.
Mario: (Nods slowly) Right...right...
Peach began to send out the invitations through Toadette's messaging service, sending out colorful paper airplanes with the details of the tournament written neatly in gold ink. The invites read: "Welcome to the Royal Dodge Ball Challenge! Captains will be chosen randomly and everyone is welcome to join! Meet at the park at noon!"
The park was already buzzing with excitement and anticipation as the guests began to arrive. The Toads had volunteered to move all park obstacles out of the way, making a giant square for everyone to traverse and run around in, giving plenty of space for the balls people were going to be hurling to fly in every which direction.
Back at DK Island, Funky Kong was still lonely in his room, contemplating the incident from yesterday...as he heard the other Kong's TV's from other rooms behind his closed door, and the distant sound of waves outside his window. He had to make things right with Daisy at some point, but the thought of facing her after the accusations made his heart sink. He picked up his phone and started to compose a message, but the words didn't come out right. He sighed, put down the phone, and decided that he'd talk to her in person once the time was right for him.
After a couple of minutes, the doorbell rang outside the DK House, Dixie, Diddy and DK were downstairs at that time.
Diddy: I'll get it!
He sprinted to the door, and upon opening it, was greeted by a peculiar sight. A Pink Yoshi was standing outside, holding a rolled-up piece of paper in its mouth, which was adorned with the royal crest of the Mushroom Kingdom. It looked up at Diddy with eager eyes, as if it couldn't wait to deliver its message.
Diddy: (Surprised) Hey there, little buddy! What's that you got for us?
The Pink Yoshi dropped the paper into Diddy's hand, and he unfurled it to find an elaborate invitation. The gold ink sparkled in the morning light, and the scent of fresh parchment filled the air. The words "Royal Dodge Ball Challenge" jumped out at him, and his eyes grew wide.
Dixie: (Calling from the couch) Diddy, who's at the door?
Diddy: (Waving the invitation) It's an invite from Peach! To a dodge ball tournament in the park today!
Dixie and DK both called Funky downstairs, their curiosity piqued.
Dixie: What's the plan, Funky? Are we going to this tournament?
Funky: (Sighs) I don't know, guys. I'm not sure I can face everyone right now...
Donkey Kong: Funky, it's not about facing them. It's about making things right with Dais-
Funky: Yea I get it...for the...how many times has it been so far?
Dixie: Ugh...like the fourth...
Diddy: Yeaaa you really have to pick up the pace, going around the problem everyday isn't gonna solve anything, and that's basically what you've been doing this whole week...
Funky sighed heavily and stood up, knowing they were right. He couldn't avoid Daisy forever, especially not today.
Funky: You're right, I'll go, but if she says anything about that hair-pulling again, I'm outta there.
Dixie: (Rolls her eyes) Funky, come on, just try to get along, okay? For the sake of...everyone...please...
Funky: (Mumbles) Fine, fine. I'll go. But if he tries anything...I'm gonna-
Dixie, DK, and Diddy: Funkyyyyyy-
Funky Kong took a deep breath and went back upstairs to get himself ready. DK, Dixie and Diddy did the same.
Funky went with a different outfit this time, one that would still catch the attention of everyone around him, but wasn't as dark-themed. A silver chain necklace this time, short jogging pants and a tight white shirt that said "KONG" on it in golden letters was his new attire for the day, as he felt like showing his muscles more than anything related to Daisy anymore.
As the group from DK Island made their way to the Mushroom Kingdom in Funky's barrel plane, they could see everyone else already gathered up, doing their own things waiting for the rest of the guests to show up.
Funky's stomach was in knots, his mind racing with what he would say to Daisy. He knew he had to make things right, but the fear of rejection and her continued anger weighed heavily on him.
Upon landing, they were greeted by the vibrant colors of the park. The Toads had set up an impressive array of stands selling snacks, drinks, and even some dodge ball merchandise. The air was filled with laughter and chatter as they landed and walked over to the main area of the park, only to see no one really there.
Funky: Where...the hell?
Dixie: (Looking around) Maybe they're all at the starting line?
Donkey Kong: Dixie there is no starting line, have you gone bananas?
Dixie: Thats not...ughhhhhhh...
Funky: I don't kno- wait THERE'S BASKETBALL?
Funky Kong spotted a basketball court far, far away from the main park area, he saw Mario, Luigi, and Yoshi all standing in it, waiting.
Funky: Yo, Diddy we might have to hoop with the bois for a bit before this dodge ball thing...
Diddy: Funky, focus! We need to sort this out with Daisy first!
Funky: But its basketball tho! You KNOW we gotta hoop, we HAVE to!
Diddy: Uhhh...okkk...
Funky ran full sprint towards the basketball court with Diddy hysterically skipping and running behind him.
Diddy: FUNKY! WAIT UP!
Funky looked back as he saw Diddy struggling to stay in his view behind the large anthropomorphic ape.
As he got closer, he could see the three taking turns 1v1'ing eachother, chatting about some random topics.
Funky: (Panting) (Shouting) YO DIDDY WHY ARE YOU SO SLOOW!?
Diddy: (Shouting) YOU RAN TO FAST!
Mario, Luigi and Yoshi all looked confused as they saw Funky yelling across the park waiting for Diddy to make it to the small court.
Mario: What's the rush, Funky?
Funky: (Grinning) It's basketball, why would I not try my hardest to make it over here?
Diddy Kong finally made it over as he saw Yoshi dribbling a ball in the background.
Luigi: Yo- You know this isn't the sport everyone's gonna be participating in, right?
Funky: I mean, dodgeball is pretty fun, but since Waluweenie, the small-dick loser himself isn't here yet to solidify the number of players we need, I thought we both would join y'all three in some basketball first.
Mario: (Smirks) Walu-what?
Funky: (Ignores) Nothing, just some friendly banter between me and...a friend. (Picks up a basketball) So, who's up for a quick 3v2?
The group looked at each other, then shrugged, agreeing to the game. The four of them played a few intense rounds, their laughter and shouts echoing through the park. Funky's athleticism and love for basketball shone through, and for a brief moment, the tension of the previous day was forgotten.
As they played, Peach, Daisy, and the others slowly made their way over, drawn by the sounds of the game. Daisy's eyes searched the group, looking for Funky. She saw him from afar, laughing and playing without a care in the world, and her anger began to flare up again.
Yoshi: Mario when's the next um...when's the next remix we're gonna have to do?
Funky: Wait Yoshi you play an instrument?
Funky Kong spun a green and red basketball on his finger as Diddy ran around, pretending to shoot lay-ups from the side of the net.
Peach: (Arms folded) Funky, we need to talk.
Funky: (Without looking) Oh, I know Peach. Umm...but anyway what instrument does Yoshi play I- I'm confused...
Yoshi: French Horn and Banjo, boi
He managed to flutter a basketball into the hoop with his feet whilst explaining what instruments he played for Mario's band.
Peach: Funky, now!
Her tone was firm, cutting through the laughter like a hot knife through butter. Funky's heart sank as he turned to face her, the ball bouncing away from him.
Funky: (Puts his hands up) Alright, alright. Let's go somewhere private.
Funky Kong followed the blonde-haired girl to the castle, away from everyone, his heart racing faster than ever. His mind was racing with what to say, trying to come up with the perfect words to apologize and explain everything, but nothing felt right.
Peach: (Firmly) Funky, I know you're upset, but you can't just go around punching people, especially not our friends...you're better than this
Funky: (Sighs) I know, Peach, I know...but he's been pushing more buttons on me than if he was playing Super Mario; The Lost Levels...
Peach: It's still not an excuse...
Funky: Do you even know who I'm talking about?
Peach: (Pauses) Funky, it doesn't matter who it was, you hurt Daisy, and that's what we need to talk about.
Funky looked down at his feet, a blank image emerged in his brain as he thought of what to say to her next.
Peach: Don't try to justify anything...just...pl-
Funky: Okay, clearly you didn't see the whole thing like Rosalina di-
Peach: I don't care about Rosaline right now, she's not here to help you...
Funky: She understands...I would never hit someone like that for no reason, Peachy cmon-
Peach: Funky, I know you wouldn't, but the evidence...it's pretty damning.
Funky's shoulders slumped as he followed Peach into a quiet, secluded garden in the castle. The flowers and greenery around them seemed to whisper the secrets of a thousand untold stories.
Funky: (Takes a deep breath) I didn't do it, Peach. I swear on my grandpa's barrel.
Peach: (Looks into his eyes) Funky, you know I want to believe you, but Daisy is hurt. And she's not the type to lie about something like this.
Funky's gaze searched Peach's eyes, hoping to find a shred of belief. He knew that his friendship with Daisy was hanging by a thread, and he had to be the one to fix it.
Funky: (Nods solemnly) I know, Peach. I'll make it right, I promise, for real this time...
Peach: (Sighs) I hope so, Funky. For all our sakes. But for now, lets get this game started...
Making their way back to the main park area, Funky's heart felt heavier than a blue shell on the racetrack. He spotted Daisy talking with Rosalina, her body language stiff and uninviting. As he walked past her and Rosa, he glanced over as he watched Diddy, Luigi, and Yoshi form the small basketball court stare at him as he walked back into the park area.
Peach: (Claps her hands) Alright, everyone!
The chatter and laughter died down as Peach's voice rang out across the park. The atmosphere grew tense as all eyes fell on her and Funky.
Peach: It's time for the Royal Dodge Ball Challenge to begin! Let's get everyone into their teams!
The crowd of friends and allies murmured among themselves as they grouped into two teams, the air thick with anticipation and unresolved conflict.
Waluigi was then spotted by Peach, hastily running across the park area with a wad of things in a purple bag.
Waluigi: HEY! WAAITT! I WAS INVITED! DON'T START YET!
Peach: (Rolls her eyes) Of course you were, Waluigi. You're always welcome to our little...festivities.
Waluigi strutted over to the group, a smug grin plastered on his face.
Waluigi: (Panting) I brought... some... extra... surprises... for the... tournament... (Pulls out a black dodge ball)
Daisy's eyes widened as she saw the ball, the same one from the recording studio.
Daisy: (Whispers to Peach) What's going on? Why is he here?
Peach: (Puts a comforting hand on Daisy's shoulder) Just keep playing along, we'll deal with him after the game...Ok everyone who's kind enough to volunteer for being our first team captain?
The crowd grew quiet as everyone looked around awkwardly. Finally, Funky stepped forward, his heart pounding like a bass drum.
Funky: (Nods) I'll do it.
Peach: (Surprised) You?
Funky: (Nods) Yeah, I mean...I've been sort of slacking in the fitness department lately because of projects and stuff I've been doin but...my physique is still phenomenal so mayb-
Dixie: FUNKY!
Funky: Uh...oops...
Peach: (Shakes her head) That's not what I meant...but okay, Funky, you're one of the captains. And for Team 2...
The crowd looked around, and to everyone's surprise, Waluigi stepped up.
Waluigi: (With a smug smirk) I'll do it.
Peach: (Sighs) Waluigi, really? You know this isn't the right time or place for...
Waluigi: (Interrupts) Oh, come on Peach, don't be a party pooper! It's all just fun and games!
The tension in the air grew palpable as Waluigi held the black dodge ball up, tauntingly bouncing it in his hand.
Mario: (Cautious) Peach, maybe we should just stick to the original plan...
Peach: (Firmly) No, Mario. We need to keep everyone's spirits high. This will be a good distraction.
Mario: (Nods) If you say so, Peach.
With that, Peach tossed a red bandana into the air, signaling the start of the captain selection process. The bandana fluttered down, landing gracefully on Funky's head. The crowd of Toads standing behind plants, against the walls in the background cheered, and Funky couldn't help but feel a spark of excitement.
Peach: Okay (Sighs) I'm gonna stand by my best friend Daisy for now, um...everyone get in a line beside me, so Daisy will be on one end, and someone else is on the other end.
The group reluctantly followed her instructions, forming two lines. Peach looked at Daisy with concern, but Daisy's gaze remained fixed on Funky, her eyes filled with a mix of anger and sadness.
Peach: Now, let's start with Funky...who do you pick first?
Funky: (sighs) D- d... d-
Funky paused, his hand hovering over the group of friends. His heart was racing as he looked from one face to the next, searching for the perfect teammate to stand by his side. He finally pointed at Diddy.
Funky: (With a nervous chuckle) I pick my boi, Diddy!
Diddy sprinted over to Funky's side, laughing hysterically.
Diddy Kong: HAHAHAA! Ok we're definitely winning...
Daisy sighed and crossed her arms trying to keep her spirit high as Diddy and Funky hyped each other up.
Peach: (Turns to Waluigi) And who do you pick, Waluigi?
Waluigi: (Without even looking at anyone) I choose...
He took a dramatic pause, looking around the group with a mischievous glint in his eye.
Waluigi: (Grinning) I choose... (Looks around) I choose Wario!
Wario sauntered over, his grin wider than usual, knowing that he'd been chosen first by Waluigi. The crowd murmured, the air of competition thickening as everyone took their place.
Peach: (To Funky) Okay, your turn again.
Funky: (Thinks hard) Alright, I'm picking...um...Y- Yoshi? I guess your with me...
Yoshi looked surprised but nodded, making his way over to Funky's team. The picks continued, with each member of the group choosing who they'd like to have on their side, some choosing based on friendship, others on skill.
Peach: (Nods) Good, good. Now, let's get everyone else sorted out.
As the teams grew, the tension between Funky and Daisy remained palpable, like a storm cloud hovering over the park.
Peach: (Looks around) Okay, um, me, Mario, Peachette, Daisy, and Rosalina who haven't been chosen yet, So, whose turn is it?
Waluigi: (Looks at the group, stroking his chin) Hm, I think... (Picks Rosalina) You're on my team, Rosalina.
Rosalina nodded, stepping over to Waluigi's side, her gaze flickering to Funky with a knowing look.
Rosalina: Please...just don't cheat or be rude...Please, Waluigi.
Waluigi: Ugh...Fiiiiine, I won't...
Funky: (Picks Peach) And obviously, I pick Peach, she's somehow really good, I don't understand but, yeeeaaaa- get on over here...
The crowd cheered, and Peach blushed, smiling as she joined Funky's team. The remaining players were quickly picked, leaving only Daisy and Mario to choose from.
Mario: Waluigi, your turn again
Waluigi: Um...You're on the cover of every damn game so, YOU'RE MY LUCKY CHARM TODAY! WAHAHAHAHAHA!
Mario deadpanned but couldn't help to let out a small chuckle, he knew Waluigi was just being his usual self.
Mario: (Sighs) Alright, I guess I'm on Team Waluigi.
Daisy looked at Peach with a hint of sadness in her eyes, but Peach just nodded reassuringly, indicating it was okay. The groups were finalized, Team Funky Kong consisted of himself, Diddy Kong, Yoshi, Peach, DK, Dixie Kong, and Daisy. Waluigi's team consisted of himself, his best friend Wario, Rosalina, Toadette, Peachette, Luigi, Birdo, and Mario.
Funky Kong was hype as ever, waiting for the signal for both of the teams to split up with balls in their hands. Each team went to one diagonal side of the park, the team captains, Funky Kong and Waluigi, have the ability to let team members who have gotten hit out, to get back in via tagging, however, if one of them gets hit by someone with a ball once, the other team wins.
The whistle blew and the teams rushed into action, the balls flying through the air like a rainbow of chaos. Funky's team quickly fell into a rhythm, using their diverse skills to dodge and throw with precision. Meanwhile, Waluigi's team, though lacking in coordination, had a wild card up their sleeve - Mario.
Mario's surprising agility and strength, combined with Wario's brute force, had Team Waluigi scoring points left and right. Funky couldn't help but feel a pang of annoyance watching the plumber, playing so well against him. But he pushed it aside, focusing on the game at hand.
Daisy, however, remained distant, throwing balls with a fierce determination that spoke volumes about her current emotional state. Funky got a spark of hype in his bones, as he started running around, grabbing three balls at once, chasing the opposing team members, sniping multiple of them, scoring individual points left and right, showing off as much as possible.
Waluigi, noticing Funky's overconfidence, smirked and called out to his team. "Guys, let's focus on getting Funky out!" His words echoed through the park, and a cold gust of wind seemed to carry the malicious intent behind them.
Funky: (Grinning) Oh, so you wanna play dirty, huh?
Funky tossed the balls to his teammates and started jogging towards the center of the park, where the chaos was at its peak. Dixie and Diddy looked at each other nervously, knowing Funky's competitive spirit could get the better of him.
Dixie: (Shouts) Funky, remember what we talked about! Stay calm!
But Funky was already in the heat of the battle, he saw Waluigi a good distance away from him, trying to land a hit on him. He danced around him constantly, making up moves as he went. Two of Funky's teammates were out while he was in a captain vs captain battle with Waluigi in the center of the park area, he managed to escape the constant array of balls being hurled at him.
Funky: (Laughing) You're slipping, Walu!
Waluigi: (Grinning) Slipping? No, I'm just getting warmed up.
Suddenly, Funky heard a faded, distant, high-pitched sound, it sounded like his name being called in a distressing manner.
Daisy: (Screaming) FUNKYYYY!
Funky's head snapped towards the sound, his eyes widening as he saw Daisy, sitting on the ground, her eyes wide with anger, she got out by Toadette while he was showing off and trying to make Waluigi look bad.
Funky Kong tried to ignore her and saw Yoshi out instead. He decided to go over to him to try and tag him back in, evading any opposing team members on the way.
Diddy Kong linked up right beside him to try and get Yoshi back in as well, he acted as a meat shield for Funky, throwing balls wildly in every which way, just in case there were opposing players lurking nearby.
Diddy: Where is Yoshi? Wasn't he just here sitting?
Funky: He's over there...
He pointed at him sitting on a black bench, he was waiting forever to get back in the game after Peachette chased him around the map earlier, she didn't stop until she eventually managed to get him out.
Funky: (Panics) DIDDY, QUICK, GET THEM OUT OF THE WAY!
Diddy nodded and started throwing balls at the opposing players with precision, his speed and accuracy were surprisingly good for someone who didn't seem to take the game seriously earlier.
Diddy: (Shouts) YOSHIIII, GET BA-
But before Diddy could finish his sentence, a ball thrown by Birdo smacked him directly in the face, knocking him out of the game as well.
Funky: DIDDY NOOOOO!
Funky Kong managed to stumble backwards to get him back in, dodging a second ball Birdo stuffed in her snout, and shot at him.
He ran over to Yoshi sitting on the bench and glid his hand across Yoshi's green skin, tagging him back in.
Yoshi: (Startled) Oh...thank you, Funky!
Funky: (Nods) Don't mention it, buddy.
With a renewed sense of urgency, Funky Kong and Yoshi sprinted back into the game. Team Funky was down to three players on his team left in the game, and multiple of Waluigi's team members were chasing him across the park with balls, somehow missing him by inches.
Yoshi: (Picks up a ball) I've got you covered, Funky!
Yoshi threw the ball with surprising force, knocking out Toadette, who had been creeping up on Funky. The crowd cheered as the scoreboard flipped, showing that Team Funky had regained a slight advantage.
Funky: (Nods) Thanks, buddy!
He glanced over to see Peach and Daisy standing by the sidelines, both of them looking worried. Despite the fun nature of the tournament, the tension between him and Daisy was a heavy weight on his shoulders.
Funky: WOOOOOOHOOOOO! YESSIRRRR! GIMME THOSE POINTS!
Funky Kong ran by DK and Dixie Kong, tagging both of them back in, but Peachette and Birdo were still jogging behind him, both out of breath with balls still in their hand.
Peachette: (Panting) Fun...kyyyyy...get back here!
Funky stumbled across two balls on the floor right by Daisy, who was still out. He picked them up, ignoring Daisy's presence in the moment, 180'd, and sniped both Peachette and Birdo, getting them out.
Funky: I'M INSAAANEEE!
DK: Bro you're crazy! We're definetly winning this...
Yoshi: Great job Funky!
The three ran past Daisy, with Funky dribbling a dodge ball in his hand beating his muscular chest, his chain dangling all over the place as he was moving around.
Daisy: (Standing up) Funky...FUNKY!
But Funky was too into the game, ignoring her call.
Daisy sighed and sat back down, pouting as she crossed her arms. Everyone looked at her as they ran past her, she saw Funky Kong across the park, carrying his whole team by constantly getting Waluigi's teammates out. Waluigi had about 3 teammates left at this point, he was too intimidated by Funky's monster performance that he didn't want to go out and tag all his downed teammates back in.
Daisy: (Mutters) He's really showing off now...
The game continued, the balls flying in every direction, the laughter and shouts of the players mixing with the cheers of the audience. Funky's heart raced as he threw himself into the game, dodging and weaving through the colorful chaos, trying to push aside his fear of losing Daisy's friendship.
Daisy watched Funky, her eyes narrowing as she saw Waluigi's smug grin as he threw the black dodgeball at Funky. The crowd gasped as Funky leaped over the ball, the smirk on Waluigi's face fading into surprise.
Funky: Damn bro you really thought that would work?
Waluigi: Oh no,
Funky danced around Waluigi's throws once again, this time, doing a much cornier dance, hitting a backflip and a handstand.
Funky: HAHA! YO DIDDY THERE'S A BALL NEAR YOU, GET AWAY FROM LUIGI HE'S RIGHT BEHIND YO- actually hold on...
Funky hastily ran in all directions, nearly tripping from the long strides the tall muscular anthro ape took, he ran over to Diddy with a ball in his hand, and without Luigi noticing, he did a 360, and sniped Luigi in the side with a dodgeball, saving his teammate.
Diddy: (Surprised) Funky Kong you...you...
Funky: (Picks up Diddy) C'mon, we got this!
With the crowd's roars in their ears, Team Funky Kong managed to knock out Waluigi's remaining players, except for Waluigi himself, who was now hiding behind a tree, holding the black dodgeball.
Funky: (Panting) C'mon, Waluigi, show yourself!
Waluigi: (Emerges from behind the tree) Oh, I'm right here, Funky...
Waluigi threw the black dodgeball with a cackle, but Funky anticipated it and caught it with ease, meaning that Waluigi was out.
Funky: (Grinning) That's not very sporting of you, Walu.
Waluigi: (Pouts) Fine, I guess I lost...grrrrrrr-
The crowd erupted in cheers as Team Funky Kong emerged victorious. Funky couldn't help but get excited as he ran around and high-fived his whole team, screaming, laughing, and jumping around.
Diddy: Funky, you're insane at dodgeball, my God...
Funky: THAT'S HOW WE DO THINGS AROUND HERE! YEEEEEAAAAAAAAA! WOOOOOO!
Yoshi:
Yoshi looked over at Funky with a mix of amazement and amusement.
Yoshi: Dude, you're like a dodgeball ninja!
Funky: (Laughing) Thanks, buddy!
Dixie: (Patting Funky on the back) Good game, Funky. That's the kind of focus we need for the competition!
Funky: (Nods) Thanks, Dix.
Their victory was short-lived, as the gravity of the situation with Daisy began to sink in again. Funky's eyes searched the crowd, finding her standing off to the side, her arms still crossed.
Funky: (Cautiously) Uh...I should probably go talk to Daisy...
Diddy: (Nods) Yeah, man. Good luck.
Funky approached Daisy with his heart in his throat, the sound of the crowd fading into the background.
Funky: Hey...Daisy...I'm sorry...about what happened. I didn't mean to ignore you out there, I just...got caught up in the moment.
Daisy: (Looks away) Funky, I don't know if I can trust you anymore.
Her words hit him like a ton of bricks, and Funky felt his heart drop into his stomach.
Funky: (Sincerely) Daisy, please, that incident back at the recording studio yesterday was Waluigi, he got you more into this mess than you already were...
Daisy: (Turns to face him) I know now, ...I know it was him, but why didn't you just tell me that from the start?
Funky: (Rubbing the back of his neck) I...I just didn't know how to. I was scared you wouldn't believe me, you were about ready to pounce on me anyway...
Daisy: No I...what?
Funky Kong: You literally screamed at me and pushed me into a corner over that...how could I get anything through to you when your about to break your vocal cords over something I didn't even do to you...cmon girl you gotta-
Daisy: (Cuts him off) okay now you're just lying...
She turned away from him, her eyes glistening with unshed tears. Funky felt his chest tighten, knowing he had hurt her deeply. He took a step closer, reaching out a hand to her shoulder.
Funky: (Whispers) Daisy, please...just listen to m-
Peach: Alright everyone! It's um...nearly 4 PM now...
Funky's apology was interrupted by Peach in the background.
Mario: Yea...What's next? I mean...we did your dodgeball idea...surprisingly there was no outbur-
Peach: (Interrupts) Follow me, I got a special place we can all refresh ourselves with some food!
The crowd cheered, the excitement of the game quickly shifting to the prospect of a royal feast. Peach got infront of everyone and began walking through all the trees and forestry bordering the park, everyone followed behind her, with Funky Kong trying to catch up to the rest of the Kongs in the big pack of friends.
Peach led them to an open field with a path in it. The path was long and curvy, and far, far ahead, was a big, royal-looking building, with a giant bridge crossing over to it.
Waluigi: Wario you ready to dive in like some dolphins when we get in there?
Wario: You KNOW I love some food!
They both snickered as Rosalina overheard them.
Rosalina: Just make sure you don't get kicked out while we're still all eating in there...(through teeth) cause you might...
Waluigi: (Ignoring) Oh, don't worry, I got my charm, I won't let you guys down.
The group followed Peach down the winding path, their laughter and chatter filling the air. Funky hung back, his mind racing with thoughts of how to fix things with Daisy.
As they approached the grand entrance of the building, the smell of meat, fresh cooked bread, and fresh fruit filled their senses.
Waluigi was punching the air around him in excitement with Wario following his actions. Diddy Kong was sniffing it all in as he walked next to the rest of the Kongs.
Peach greeted the Toad at the entrance of the building, and they both pushed the gigantic doors open, revealing a dim-lit cathedral-like interior, with high ceilings and stained glass.
Toad: Welcome, welcome everyone to the Royal Banquet Hall!
The group walked in with amazement, their eyes wide open at the grandeur of the place, it was nothing like the usual places they had their meetups at, it had a fancy, royal vibe to it.
There were tables galore, and booths on the sides as they walked in, up ahead, there was a long, wide lit-up ordering section, with a kitchen you could see in the back, which was filled with Toads and Shy Guys running around.
Luigi: Oooh...t- this place is faaancy...
Mario: (Patting his stomach) And hopefully well-stocked with food!
The group followed the path of the hallway, which was lined with paintings of past Mushroom Kingdom royalties, to the grand dining room. The room was illuminated by chandeliers that hung from the ceiling, casting a warm glow over the elegantly set tables. Two booths were to the side, which everyone's eyes were drawn to.
Peach: Alright, everyone, to the ordering area!
DK: all at once?
Diddy: Looks like it...
The group made their way to the ordering area, Funky still lost in his own thoughts. He glanced back at Daisy, who was standing with Peach and Rosa on the other side of the ordering station.
As everyone ordered their things, Funky was drawn to the sizzling steak, as he sniffed it in, his eyes lit up.
Funky: Broo...DUUDEE THAT SMELL! IT'S SO GOOD!
Rosalina: Soo...What do you think you want, Daisy?
Daisy: Um...I'll go stand on the other end of this area until I feel like I want anything...
Rosalina: Oh...uh...ok! Take your time sweetie...
Funky Kong: DIDDY WE NEED TO TRY THAT!
Diddy: Well It does smell preeeetty good...
As Daisy walked behind everyone to the other end where Funky was on, Dixie spotted her, her expression was nearly completely frozen like a statue.
Once Daisy made it over to think about what she wanted to eat, Funky was still taking in the aroma of meat, with Diddy right beside him.
2nd Cashier Toad: So...you two have been standing here all this time, what would you two like? We're going down the line since there's so many of you...
Funky: Steak, Diddy?
Diddy: ABSOLUTELY! STEEAAK! STEEAK! STEEAKK!
Funky: Ok...umm...STEAAKK! BRO THAT LOOKS SOOOO GOOOOD!
2nd Cashier Toad: And?
Funky: Are those fries? Yo Diddy are those-
2nd Cashier Toad: Yes...those are fries...what do you think this is? It's not like we serve Koopa legs or something stupid...
Funky: STEAK AND FRIES, BABY! Oh and a side of banana anything, please.
2nd Cashier Toad: Welp...Ok!
Daisy let out an uneven sigh as she stood next to Funky, facing the opposite way with her arms crossed.
Wario: Yo we GOTTA try those mushroom-garlic sandwiches!
Waluigi: Yeeeaa...you can have the garlic, fat-boy. I'm gettin' myself a nice Wah-Burger!
Rosalina facepalmed at the two's un-mannered behaviour.
Rosalina: Ugh, theres No such thing, Waluigi. Look at the long menu...and stop making up sh-
Waluigi: Pffftt...fiiine...Mushroom garlic sandwich it is...I guess...
The Toads took their orders and handed them out trays with their food. Funky picked up his steak and fries, the sizzling sound of the steak was like music to his ears. As he turned around to look for a place to sit, his eyes met Daisy's, who was staring at him with a mix of anger and sadness.
He tried to ignore this, and sat with the rest of the Kongs, Mario, Luigi, Yoshi, Waluigi and Wario.
Wario took a bite out of his sandwich, speaking with his mouth full. "
Wario: You know, Funky, we should've had a bet going on who'd win that game."
Funky rolled his eyes, trying to keep his cool.
Funky: Yeeaa...I mean we already had a grand ide-
Waluigi: Yeah, yeah, whatever...
Diddy: You weren't lying Funky, this steak is HEEEAAT!
Funky: I told you! THIS IS SOO GOOOOD DUDE!
The other group sitting at another booth was all of the girls except for Dixie Kong, as she was sitting with the boys.
Funky: I'm TELLIN' you...yo Wario you should've gotten a piece of this steak bro Oh my GOOOD!
Waria: (Mumbling with mouth full) I'm good with my mushroom-garlic...
Funky couldn't help but feel the tension between him and Daisy across the room, even with the joyful sounds of the others enjoying their food. He took a deep breath and swallowed a mouthful of his steak.
Funky: (Thinking) Damn...
Diddy: Funky? You alright?
Funky: Uh...heh...yeeeaaah...
Diddy: Are you 100% sure?
DK: Yea, are you sure?
Funky: Um...yea...I guess...
Over at the girls table...
Rosalina: No It's just...I don't know how to help you anymore, Daisy...
Daisy lay her head down on the table, pushing her food away from her.
Rosalina let out a sigh as she rubbed the ginger girl's back.
Peach: Oh no...what is it now, Daisy?
Daisy: It's just...
In the heat of the moment, Daisy let out a sharp, muffled sob. Rosalina saw a small hint of a tear falling off the table onto the floor.
Toadette: Um...Rosalina?
Rosalina: (sighs) Yes...little one...what is it.
Toadette was sitting on the other side of Rosa, she was worried as she leaned over to see Daisy with her head down.
Peachette was across from her and was too busy downing her food to look or even pay attention.
Peach: Oh, Daisy, what's wrong? Did Funky say something again?
Daisy: (Rolls her eyes) No...
The room was filled with the sound of plates clinking, laughter, and the occasional roar from Donkey Kong, Funky was obviously not at the girl's table, so he and everyone else sitting there was oblivious to what was going on.
Daisy: (Whispers) It's just...I don't know if I can forgive him.
Rosalina: Funky's not a bad person, Daisy. He just has...his ways.
Daisy: (Sniffs) I know he didn't mean to hurt me, but...it just feels like he's been ignoring me since we got here.
Peach: (Nods sympathetically) I know it's tough, but maybe you should talk to him after we eat. Clear the air.
Daisy: (Sighs) Maybe you're right.
The group of boys were deep into discussing strategies for the next match, while Dixie remained silent, watching Daisy from across the room with concern.
Dixie: (Mutters) I hope she's okay.
Mario: (Looks over) What's wrong with Daisy, Dixie?
Dixie: (Sighs) Nothing...just some friendship drama, I guess.
Mario: (Nods) Ah, I see.
As they all enjoyed their meals, Funky couldn't shake off the feeling of Daisy, but still chose to ignore it as he continued eating.
Mario: Hey Funky, you've gotta try these mushroom ravioli!
Funky: (Nods) Maybe later, Mario, I'm all about this steak right now.
The conversation flowed around him as Funky's mind was racing with thoughts of how to make it right with Daisy.
Funky: (Mumbling) I can't believe I messed up that badly...
Diddy: What's that, Funky?
Funky shakes his head, not wanting to bring the mood down at the boy's table.
Funky: Nothing, just thinking about the next match strategy.
Waluigi snickers, tossing a fry at Funky.
Waluigi: Oh, come on, you're the king of dodgeball, don't act like you're worried.
Funky throws a fry back, smiling slightly, trying to play it off.
Funky: Nah, just thinking about how we can't let our guard down, that's all.
Mario nods in agreement, stuffing a ravioli in his mouth.
Mario: (Chews, speaks with mouth full) Mmph mph...right.
On the other side of the room, Daisy sits at the girl's table, her appetite gone as she picks at her food.
Rosalina: (Concerned) Daisy, are you sure you're okay? You've barely touched your meal.
Daisy: (Sighs) I'm just not feeling well, I guess.
Peachette: Maybe you're just tired from the game.
Daisy looks over at the boy's table, watching Funky laugh with the others.
Daisy: (Whispers) Or maybe...I'm just tired of being ignored.
The others at the table exchange glances, knowing full well who she was referring to.
Peach: Daisy, I know things are tough right now, but you guys are a team. You need to work through this.
Toadette nods, trying to be supportive.
Toadette: Maybe you should talk to him after dinner?
Daisy: (Shakes her head) I don't know if I'm ready for that.
Rosalina puts an arm around Daisy, giving her a comforting squeeze.
Rosalina: Whenever you're ready, we're all here for you.
The room falls into a gentle quiet, only the clinking of silverware and the occasional burst of laughter piercing the air.
Back at the boy's table, Dixie Kong shook her head as she watched Funky Kong participating in some, as she thought, corny dance moves with Yoshi, Mario, Wario, Waluigi, DK, and Diddy. They were reciting all kinds of weird noises,
while the food was getting cold.
Dixie: (Standing up) You know what? I'm going to go check on Daisy.
The guys were too busy to acknowledge her, so she simply picked up her plate and made her way over to the girl's table.
Dixie: Hey, Daisy. How are you holding up?
Daisy looked up, her eyes red and puffy.
Daisy: (Sniffs) I'm okay.
Dixie knew she was lying, but she didn't push it. Instead, she sat down next to her and began to eat.
Dixie: (Mouth full) This food is so good! Have you tried the steak?
Daisy: (Forces a smile) Yeah, Funky Kong was hype as hell over it when I was standing next to him...forcefully...
Dixie nodded sympathetically.
Dixie: I know you're upset with him, but he's not a bad person.
Daisy: (Nods) I know...it's just...(grits teeth) it's hard when you feel like you're not being heard.
Peach looked over at the two of them, her expression concerned.
Peach: (Cheerfully) Ladies, let's get some dessert!
The group of girls stood up, leaving their half-eaten meals behind, and made their way to the dessert section.
The sweet aroma filled the air, with a variety of cakes, ice creams, and fruits displayed on the counter.
Peachette: (Excited) Oh my gosh, look at that triple-chocolate fudge cake!
Daisy: (Dully) It looks good, Peach.
But Daisy's heart wasn't in it. She stared at the desserts without really seeing them.
Peach: Daisy, are you sure you don't want anything?
Daisy: (Sighs) I'll just get some fruit.
Rosalina: (Nods) That's a good choice.
As they waited in line, Dixie leaned in close to Daisy.
Dixie: (Whispers) Look, I know you're upset, but Funky really didn't mean to ignore you out there. He was just caught up in the game.
Daisy: (Whispers back) I know...-it's not your fault, but...it just...I just feel like he's tryng to either hide something, or he's just trying to outshine me for some reason when I'm not as rough and tough as I used to be...
Dixie: (Nods) I understand how you feel, but Funky's always been competitive. It's part of who he is.
Daisy: (Looks away) Maybe...
Peach: Ladies, let's grab our desserts and find a cozy spot to sit down.
The girls picked out their desserts and found an empty booth. Daisy sat with her fruit, pushing it around her plate.
Peach: Daisy, you've got to talk to Funky. This isn't like you to be so down.
Daisy: (Sighs heavily) I know, but every time I try, he's just...different.
Meanwhile, Funky couldn't shake off the feeling that something was off. He looked over at Daisy, who was sitting with the girls, looking more miserable than ever.
Funky: (Standing) I- I can't keep putting this shit off, man... (whispers) Damn...
DK: Oh no Don't tell me it's about HER again...
Waluigi: You and Daisy, Funky...My Go-
Funky: Shut it Mr. "I like pulling girl's hair", I'm going over there to get this shit overwith...
Diddy: Oh my God your actually gonna do i-
Funky: If you say one more thing I'mma change my mind...
The group of boys watched as Funky made his way over to the girl's table, continuing his rather interesting yet stylish dance as he went. His plate was fully devoured, leaving no crumbs. As he walked over, Rosalina, Toadette, and Peachette looked up at him, all three gave either dead, or uneven glances.
Funky: (Sits down) Hey Daisy, can we talk?
Daisy: (Sighs) What's there to talk about, Funky?
Her voice was cold and flat. Funky felt his stomach drop.
Funky: (Nervously) Uh...heh...Um... (mumbles) Shhhhit...
Daisy: Wha- Did you just mumble somethi-
Funky: (Clears his throat) Nah, I'm...uh...I'm good...
Peach: (Interrupts) Daisy, I think Funky has something important to say to Miss Daisy over here...um...why don't...you two go somewhere more private where there isn't a lot of noise?
Funky: Wha- huh? I didn't agree to thi-
Rosalina: Bathrooms are over there, honey...
Daisy looks up at Funky with a hint of hope in her eyes, and he nods, knowing that this was his chance to explain. He follows her to the quiet hallway leading to the bathroom.
The moment they're out of earshot, the tension between them is palpable. Funky starts to sweat, his heart racing in his chest.
Funky: Daisy, I'm...I'm sorry, okay? I didn't mean to ignore you out there.
Daisy: (Crosses arms) Then why did you?
Funky: I just...got caught up in the game, man. I didn't mean to make you feel like that.
Her eyes searched his, looking for any sign of dishonesty.
Daisy: Funky, please, just listen...YOU have been acting VERY...VERY out of line recently to me...all of the shit Waluigi does to me aside...you're personality and attitude has been really...(sigh) how do I say this...annoying?
Funky's expression grew serious as he looked into her eyes. He knew he had to be honest with her.
Funky: Daisy, I know I've been a bit...more outgoing than I'd like to be bu-
Daisy: (Interrupts) Funky, it's not about being outgoing, it's about...I don't know...caring about what I'm saying or feeling?
Funky sighs heavily, leaning against the wall.
Funky: I...I know. It's just that...I've always felt like I had to be the joker, the life of the party...if you will...
Daisy: Well...you always...try to act so...hyper and courageous all the time, like... a- and It's only around me that you do this type of stuff...and I'm tryna ask you...why?
Her voice was quivering, and Funky could see the pain in her eyes.
Funky: I-I... (mumbles) Fuck... umm...
Daisy: What? Did you just say something?
Funky: (Clears throat) Nothing, let's just say...I've never really interacted with you before...and that baseball game, was...I guess a showing of who I am...and I try to show off and...be that person that everyone likes and I'm all bodacious and stuff like that...similar to what you portray...I'm sorry if it felt like I was trying to like...Ion know...overthrow you in everything...including how overhype I can get and stuff like that...
Daisy: (Softly) wh...what? (Firmly) What does that even mean Funky?-
Funky: Look...don't...go all apeshit on me...no pun intended since I'm a...nevermind,but-
Daisy's breaths got heavier and her eyes got more reflective as she stared at him, her head facing up at his as he tried his best to explain himself but was not getting through to her in the way he thought he would.
Funky: (Panics) No...no...no...it's just that...I...I don't know how to act around you, Daisy. You're...different. You're...one of those...tomboys? Is that what they call the-
Daisy: (Interrupts) Funky! That's not what I mean! I'm just saying, I don't feel like myself around you anymore, and it's...it's really hard for me to...(swallows hard) to even talk to you!
Her words hit Funky like a ton of bricks. He had never seen Daisy this upset before. He took a step closer to her, his hand reaching out tentatively.
Funky: Daisy...I'm sorry, okay? I didn't mean to make you feel that way. I just...I just want to be part of the group, you know? To be liked by everyone, including you.
Daisy looked down at her feet, her arms still crossed.
Daisy: (Whispers) Funky, I know you want to be liked, but...you can't try to overshadow a person you don't even know fully yet, unlike the others. You knew and talked to Rosalina before you did to me...and the small interactions we've had in the past were not enough for us to really...like...get a feel for eachother...
Funky: Well...I've never interacted with a...tomboy...In my entire life...that much...so...I guess I didn't know how to act.
Daisy: (Sighs) Well...that changed four days ago...and it's PRETTY clear you can't respect people like me that well, considering the way you acted around me was just a mockup of how I act around everyone else.
She crossed her arms again, turning the other way as Funky reached his hand out, ready to try and say something again.
Funky: (swallows hard) Look, Daisy...I didn't mean to make you feel that way. I just want us to be cool, okay? Like, I know we're not...not like that...but we can still be friends, right?
Daisy: (Shakes her head) It's not that simple, Funky.
Funky's heart sank. He knew he had messed up, and the weight of his words hung in the air between them. He took a deep breath, trying to think of anything to say that could fix this.
Daisy: (Looks back at him) You know what, Funky? Maybe we just need some space. I can't deal with this right now.
Funky: Dai...Dayday, No- (covers his mouth) Oh shi-
Daisy: Huh- Wha- (Pauses, looking at Funky with a mix of annoyance and bewilderment) Did you just call me "Dayday"?
Funky: (Nods nervously) Yeah, I-I just made that up, I just thought it might...lighten the mood?
But it had the opposite effect. Daisy's eyes narrowed, and she took a step away from him.
Daisy: That's...that's it, Funky. I definitely need some space now...like...what the f-?
Funky: (Panics) No, no, no, wait! Don't go, Daisy!
Daisy: (Shakes her head) I can't do this right now.
With that, she turned on her heel and walked away, leaving Funky standing in the hallway feeling like the biggest fuck-up known in Nintendo history. He shook his head, whispering to himself, doing all kinds of let-down actions with his arms and legs as he walked back to the boys table as everyone finally finished eating.
Diddy: Yo! Funky! You missed dessert!
Funky slumped back into his seat, the energy from the victory now replaced with a heavy sense of defeat. The group of boys looked at him with a mix of confusion and concern.
Funky: I don't care...I'd rather not eat any dessert snacks on the way out eithe-
Mario: What happened, Funky? Did you guys work things out?
Funky: (Sighs) To No ones suprise... No...
Waluigi: (Grinning) Ah, so you two had a little lovers' spat, huh?
Funky glared at Waluigi, his frustration reaching a boiling point as his muscles were now fully visible through his shirt.
Funky: (Through gritted teeth) It's not like that, you jackass.
Waluigi's smile faded, and the room fell into an awkward silence.
DK: (Firmly) Waluigi, that's enough.
Waluigi: Ok- ok...the two apes gettin' all stingy for no reason, uggghh...
Daisy returned to the girls' table; her eyes were still super reflective, one step away from tears falling out of them. The other girls gave her sympathetic looks, and she forced a smile in return.
Daisy: (To Peach) Thanks for the talk, Peach. I'll be okay.
Peach: (Nods) Anytime, Daisy.
The groups continued their evening with small talk and laughter, but the tension between Funky and Daisy was palpable. It was clear that the issue was far from resolved.
As the night grew late and the staff began to clean up, Peach announced that eating time was officially over.
Peach: (claps her hands) Alright everyone, put your plates and stuff in the giant sink over there...Uhh...If you're staying at the castle with me, follow behind me out the door, if you're going your own way back to your homes and stuff...just go without me...
The group nodded and began to stand up, clearing their plates.
Funky: (Standing up) I'll help with the dishes.
Peach: That's not necessary, Funky. The Toads have it covered.
Funky: (Nods) Alright...(mumbles) I'll just go...talk to Daisy...
As they all made their way out, Funky hung back, hoping to catch Daisy before she left with the other girls.
Daisy: (Without looking at Funky) Thanks, Peach. I'll see you tomorrow.
Peach: (Nods) Of course, Daisy. Get some rest.
Funky: (Calling after Daisy) Daisy, wait up!
Daisy stopped in her tracks, she slumped over while turning to face him, her arms dropping to her sides.
Funky: (Swallows hard) Daisy, I...I know I messed u-
Daisy: Please...give me some space I said... (voice breaking) stop trying to better things when clearly you aren't...my god...
Daisy turned around, facing the giant door everyone came in through, catching up with Peach, Toadette, and Birdo, who were already outside, conversating near the door. Their silouhettes cutting through the slightly dark blue sky.
Funky: No, please...jus-
Daisy: (voice breaking) leave me alone...please...please...PLEASE...I just wann-
Peach (shouting): Funky! Just drop it! You'll get a chance to try this again tomorrow...
Funky wasn't listening, he steadily tried to convince her to hear him out again, but Daisy was tired.
Daisy: (Sobbing) I just...I just can't...
Her shoulders shook as she tried to hold back the tears, he managed to grab her hand and pull her back towards him, away from where the door was.
Funky Kong was getting more and more eyes laid on him as he kept pulling her arm, which wasn't too hard due to his muscular physique.
Funky: Daisy, just...just hear me out...please...
Daisy: (Tearfully) Funky, I said I needed space...
Funky: (Panics) No, no, I know you do, but...just let me explain...
The other guests and even some Toads had stopped their conversations to watch the scene unfolding. Peach's eyes grew wide as she saw the distress on Daisy's face.
Peach: (Firmly) Funky, let go of her.
Funky slowly released her hand, his eyes never leaving hers. Daisy took a step back, catching her breath and wiping at her tears.
Daisy: Funky...I (uneven sigh) you can't just force forgiveness out of me...just...listen. I'll give you a FIRM chance to make it up to me tomorrow, if you don't, you're done, I'm not giving you another chance...got it?
Funky nodded solemnly, his heart racing. He watched as she turned away from him, the four girls walked along the long path back to the main area of the Mushroom Kingdom, to Peach's castle.
Everyone else behind him was talking with eachother, getting ready to go.
Diddy: Funky! Over here! We gotta head back to DK Island before it gets even later outside...
Funky: (sigh) Coming...
Funky Kong slowly walked over to DK and Diddy who were back at the tables area, waiting for Dixie to finish putting her plates over in the giant sink where Wario and Waluigi were at.
Waluigi: (Looks over at Funky) Man...Dixie what is with your...uh...big...brother...so hung up about with Dai-
Dixie: Uh...he's not my brother you weirdo...don't you have shit to put away? Or are you staying here for the night to try and sneak in some more food like the tricksters you are?
Waluigi: (Pretending to be hurt) Oh...you wound me, Dixie.
Dixie gave a gross sigh as she threw a fork at Waluigi's purple hat, walking back to where the rest of the Kongs were standing, ready to head out the giant door.
Funky: (Mumbling to himself) I fucked up...I fucked up so bad...
Mario: (Pats his back) Hey, Funky...Don't beat yourself up too much, okay? We all have our moments...
Funky: (Shakes his head) It's just...it's not the same with Daisy, it's not like it is with you guys...I don't know what to do...
Mario: (Nods) I get it, man. But you'll figure it out. You're a good person, and Daisy will see that.
The Kong's walked down the grand hallway of the giant eating place, the echoes of their footsteps bouncing off the high ceilings. The vibrant colors of the walls and the shimmering chandeliers above offered no comfort to Funky's heavy heart.
As they approached the door, Daisy and the other girls were already out of sight, as they could feel the cold evening wind smack against their fur, the Kongs started their journey back to the Mushroom Kingdom Park to find where Funky parked the barrel plane so they could get back to DK Island.
Waluigi and Wario were a good distance behind them, as well as everyone else, who were going their own separate ways by themselves, or with one other person they knew or were related to.
Waluigi: Bro Funky was kinda shooting his shot at her tho don't you think?
Wario: Oh my God...you and this conspiracy theory...
Dixie: Ugh...are they really still yapping back there about this?
DK: (sighs) Yep...
Donkey Kong adjusted his red loose tie around his neck as they continued to walk back to the park, far behind them however, Peachette got caught up in Wario and Waluigi's smack talk about Funky Kong's deal with Princess Daisy.
Peachette: (Puzzled) I don't know, guys, I think Funky's just trying to be...himself...
Waluigi: (Rolls his eyes) Oh, come on Peachette, you saw how he was trying to outshine her in the dodgeball game!
Peachette: (Shakes her head) That's just how he is, competitive. He didn't mean any harm by it.
Wario: (Skeptically) Competitive, huh? He was practically throwing himself at her...
Peachette: (Blushes) Maybe you guys are right...but he's not like that with everyone, is he?
Waluigi's voice was strong and loud against the cold wind as he threw a playful punch at Peachette's shoulder, making her jolt sideways, her golden pigtails swaying back and forth.
Waluigi: (Grinning) Oh come on, Peachette, you can't seriously defend him after that disaster of a dinner?
Peachette: (Pulls away slightly) It's not about defending him, it's just...I don't think he means to be like that.
Wario: (Nods) True, but sometimes, you gotta know when to tone it down. Funky's been going at it full throttle since that baseball game...He might even like her, which is kinda weird since she's a human and he's kinda...not...one?
Peachette: Yeeeaaa...I'm just...gonna go my own way...you two...h- have fun...
Peachette sped up her walking as she passed the two along the path, as she could see the familiar way back to the park, she was heading back to her own house, which was quite a ways away from the central area of the Mushroom Kingdom, but she didn't care to overwork her weak legs by walking again.
Waluigi: (Laughs) Oh, Peachette's got a crush too, huh?
Wario: (Chuckles) Nah, she's just sensitive.
Peachette: (Mutters) I do not have a crush on Funky Kong...
Wario and Waluigi: (In unison) Sure ya don't, Peachette!
Her cheeks turned a brighter shade of pink as she rolled her eyes. The two continued to tease her, their laughs echoing down the path as they disappeared into the night.
Funky: (Sighs) I've really gotta work on this...I don't know what the hell I was thinking...
Donkey Kong: (Pats his back) You'll get it right tomorrow, buddy. Just be sincere.
They reached the park, where Funky had parked the barrel plane. The night sky above was speckled with stars, and the distant lights of the Mushroom Kingdom twinkled like fireflies.
Funky: (Nods) Yeah...you're right. Thanks, guys...
Dixie: (Hops into the barrel plane) Let's get outta here, I'm freezing!
The group boarded the plane, the engines roared to life, and it lifted off into the night sky, leaving the drama of the evening behind them.
The flight back to DK Island was mostly quiet, Funky lost in his thoughts. He knew he had to make things right with Daisy, but he wasn't sure how. His mind raced with ideas, trying to come up with the perfect apology.
Dixie: (Turns to Funky) You know, maybe you could just...talk to her, you know, like a normal person?
Funky: (Surprised) What do you mean?
Dixie: Like...ask her how her day was, or ...treat her as a background character...or something...
Funky: (Nods) I guess I could do that...thanks, Dix.
As the barrel plane approached DK Island, the lights grew closer, and the silhouettes of the palm trees danced in the moonlight. Funky knew tomorrow would be a new day, and he'd have to face Daisy with a clear conscience. He took a deep breath, steeling himself for the apology he was about to make.
The Kongs landed safely, the engines whining to a halt. Funky jumped out first, eager to get home and rest, but also anxious for the morning to come so he could fix his mistake. The group dispersed quickly, each heading to their own homes, leaving Funky alone with his thoughts.
In the quiet of the night, he walked towards the DK house, the leaves rustled under his feet, and the distant sounds of the ocean waves crashing against the shore filled his ears. His mind was racing with what he could say to Daisy to make things right. He knew it wouldn't be easy, but he was determined to try.
He was the first one inside, the familiar scent of the home filled his nose as he turned the downstairs lights on, making himself a warm hot chocolate with some banana slices on the side. He was planning to take it upstairs to have before resting.
Dixie: What are we doing at 8 PM coming home and IMMEDIATELY turning on the stove...Funky...what in the-
Funky: (Mumbles) Just...just making some hot cocoa...
Dixie: (Looks at the clock) At 8 PM? Are you okay?
Funky: (Nods) I'm just...thinking...about Daisy...
Dixie: Oh...right...about that... (Pauses) Maybe you should just...leave her alone for tonight?
Funky: (Panics) No, no, no, I can't do that. I gotta-
Dixie: (Interrupts) Funky, she's a big girl, she can take care of herself. If she needs space, let her have it. Trust me, she's not going anywhere.
Funky nodded, but the doubt remained etched on his face as he sipped the warm drink. The chocolate was thick and sweet, but it couldn't fill the emptiness he felt inside. He went upstairs, his thoughts swirling like the steam from his mug. He had to come up with something, anything, to show Daisy that he cared about her feelings and respected her.
He got fitted into his normal PJ's, putting his outfit he wore for the day, and his silver chain back in their respective places, as well as brushing his shiny, white teeth, and not bothering with his hair, as he thought of being lazy and combing through it the next day. Funky was determined to try and not be a total joke when it came to being a comforting and understandable person sometimes, but he didn't know how, his usual bodacious personality and random outbursts of excitement and athleticism get the best of him in most scenarios, and when he had a real interaction with Daisy, his mind didn't know what to do. As Funky walked out to his hammock again with pure tiredness eluding from his entire body, he stopped for a moment, hearing something faintly. It sounded like...sobbing? He put down his mug, which was now lukewarm, and tiptoed to the source of the noise. It was Dixie's room.
Funky: (Whispers) Dix? Are you okay?
The door was cracked open, and the light from the hallway spilled into the darkened room, revealing Dixie sitting on the edge of her bed, holding a photo frame. Funky peeked in, his heart sinking at the sight of his young cousin's distress.
Dixie: (Sniffles) Oh, Funky...I'm fine. Just...thinking about something.
Funky: (Steps in) Can I come in?
Dixie nodded, wiping at her eyes. Funky sat down beside her, taking the photo from her hand. It was an image of Cranky Kong, looking stern yet loving.
Funky: (Whispers) Wait..Cranky? What happened to him?
Dixie: He...he died today...I just found out, he left the house early this morning to visit Kiddy, Lanky, and Tiny Kong...and a bunch of enemies and tiki headed...creatures...took him away...leaving no sign...and killed him.
The room grew even quieter as the gravity of Dixie's words settled in. Funky felt his heart drop to the floor, his mind reeling with shock and grief. Cranky had always been a part of their lives, a grumpy old man that was the heart of the family in his own peculiar way.
Funky: (Whispers) Dix...I'm so sorry...
He wrapped his strong arm around her, pulling her into a tight embrace. Dixie leaned into him, her sobs growing softer as she felt the warmth of his fur.
Dixie: (Muffled) I just...can't believe he's...gone...
Funky: (Whispers) I know...but we'll get through this, together...
They sat there for a long moment, the only sound the faint ticking of the clock downstairs, marking the passing of time that seemed to have come to a standstill. Funky's thoughts were a whirlwind, trying to process this newfound loss and the pain he could feel in Dixie's trembling body.
Dixie: (Pulls away) Thank you, Funky...I just needed someone to tell...
Funky nodded, his eyes misting up. He set the photo frame down on the bedside table, gently.
Funky: (Clears his throat) I'll...be...in my hammock, like I usually am...for the night. Don't hesitate to walk into my room and wake me up if you feel even more grievance...ok?
Dixie: (Nods) Thanks, Funky...I'll try to sleep now.
Funky: (Pats her on the back) Goodnight, Dix.
With that, Funky got up, feeling heavier than usual, and walked back to his room. He knew he had to be there for Dixie, but he couldn't shake off the feeling of his own failure with Daisy. As he lay in his hammock, staring up at the starry sky through the skylight, he thought about the words Daisy had said to him earlier. He realized that his usual charm and bravado had only hurt her, and he needed to show her his true self.
