Nyra woke suddenly to a strong scent of smoke. Before she was even fully awake, she turned, coughing to her husband and shook him awake.
"I think our house is burning! We need to grab our children and get out!"
Sihtric quickly stood and yanked on a tunic, breeches and his boots before also quickly helping his wife don a shift, dress and shoes.
"Sihtric! Roderick! Hilda! Hinder! Aemma! Aelswith! Sigfried! Balen! Jane! Robert!" yelled Sihtric as he shook each child frantically. "Our house is ablaze! Hurry! Dress quick and help one another!"
Little Sigfried, waking quite frightened as a young child might, quivering, asked her father, "Papa, are we going to die?"
Seeing his wife and elder children begin to help the younger ones dress, knelt before the young girl. "Your Mamma, you and your sibling have the blood of great fire breathing dragons running through your veins. Your mother, when she was a little girl, even had her own bonded dragon and flew through the skies on her back. However, due to some bad people and her sire's foolishness, she was separated from her dragon and her dragon died. When your Mamma and I wed, her dragon appeared to her in a dream and said that the Dragon Gods had decided to gift your Mamma, me and all those of our line who choose our family over others will never fear flames. The fire will not burn us. I know because your Mamma and I walked through flames and were able to rescue Lady Thyra when her home was also ablaze. Have faith, my sweet one! We will emerge unscathed."
By this time, they were all dressed so Sihtric grabbed his leather armor and picked up his seax and began to carve a way out of their home for his family after realizing that the door was stuck. As soon as a large enough hole was opened up, Sihtric and Nyra began helping their children out of the structure. Sihtric handed their eldest son a blade (as he was already the most adept at using it) and told him to wake and warn others in the village and to make sure Lord Uthred was informed. Despite seeing the toppled bazaar and the wind, neither Sihtric nor Nyra believed their housefire was an accident.
