With backstories revealed and promises made, the bonds between our protagonists strengthen even further. Now I would like to touch upon a bond that has been with us since the very beginning and to hear out the contemplations of a thoughtful friend.

Time: May 7th - Morning

After Violet's grand reveal everyone returned to their old lives surprisingly smoothly. Not much had changed besides the fact we had to keep an eye and ear out for the mention of Fura City. I did my own research which was challenging due to whatever Violet had done to obscure it. Notably, I couldn't find it anywhere in Sinnoh's databases.

Anything held on it was scant and based in other regions, mostly restricted to essentially an online brochure. It never had its location either, only having a phone number and email you had to reach to even know where it was. It's an island off the coast of Sinnoh amidst an archipelago, so it was Sinnoh territory, but mostly independent.

It was a mix of settlers from all over the world initially, founding the city way after the Galactic Federation arrived in Hisui. They had festivals catching pokemon and a large amusement park as well. There was only one city, then forestland surrounding it with only a few abandoned buildings intermixed. On the surface, it looked average, but Violet and Amethyst wouldn't have left over average.

I left it alone for the time being and continued on with life through May. The temperature rose and the city became more lively as the sun was out longer each day.

My inventing with Vika was going well, we had managed to increase the potency for my main elemental grenades. School was fine, I often went to the chess club for some games. Training was routine, everyone was developing nicely and gym challengers had become less challenging to defeat each day. I began to wonder how difficult my own journey would be once I was of age, but I already had so much to do.

Why think ahead?

Except today anyway. Today was hot and boring, past 80 F degrees. Everyone had their own thing going on. Violet and her team working on their project. Jade's group and his dad went to Floaroma Town for a festival. Volkner was doing engineering in the city. Eva was visiting friends in Snowpoint. Even my own team had gone off to train at the gym.

Everyone had something going on except me… and Donut. We were the only two in the house, lazing around underneath a fan.

We didn't feel like watching TV, playing a game, training or even sleeping. Just stewing on the living room couch in silence. I wanted to say it was relaxing, but…

"It's still hot," I spoke up.

{Take a cold shower,} Donut mumbled, turning away from me.

That gave me an idea. "We should go swimming."

{Swimming, oh Palkia why?} Donut groaned as he turned to face me. {Why can't you ever say 'let's take some melatonin and nap for 12 hours' instead?}

"Come on Donut, you barely trained at all last month. I know you wanted some space and time to rest, but you've been bedrotting a bit too hard lately," I replied, making my concerns known. "Plus, it's just the two of us like the old days. Let's enjoy it!"

The gears in Donut's head began to spin. {Well… I guess we don't usually get a chance to hang out without Lou spouting anti bird propaganda or making outlandish military statements. Sure, I'll give swimming a shot then.}

"Awesome, because I have the perfect idea!" I exclaimed, jumping to my feet.

{What idea? We're swimming, how complicated does it get?} Donut questioned.

I only chuckled in response as I picked him up and ran out the house.

Location: Route 223

{This is not swimming,} Donut whined, from the water on a Pikachu sized surfboard.

"It's a water sport, close enough," I shouted back from the jet ski I was on.

To Donut's annoyance, I had the bright idea to accentuate our swim by getting a jet ski from my grandparents' place and a surfboard Donut's mom used to use. According to Volkner and my granddad they taught their Pikachus how to surf by pulling them along on a jet ski as they surfed. Why not continue the tradition?

{So I'm just supposed to keep my balance!?} He shouted from the end of the rope connecting us.

"Yup! If you need a break just shout!" I called back.

We each had life jackets and goggles just in case things went haywire, but I also had my waterproof bag with some extra supplies for worse case scenarios and one special item as a last resort. "You ready!?"

Donut looked around before sighing, gripping the handle of his end of the line firmer. {Sure!?}

I gave him a thumbs up before jetting off into the ocean. We didn't have a third person to keep an eye out for behind, but the jet ski did have a camera that allowed me to view directly behind me. That way I could determine how to move based on how Donut was doing. So far I was going pretty slow and he was keeping his balance, which was a good sign.

"Alright, let's speed things up," I muttered, as I began to pick up speed as I began to ski deeper into Route 223.

Donut was struggling a bit more now, but he had yet to fall, going between my waves with precise caution to avoid crashing out. So far, so good as we continued to ski.

As we made our way onward, a couple of Mantyke began to leap by our side, hovering over the water and waving to us. Donut was too focused on staying afloat to pay them any mind before they dove back into the water. That is until a Mantine burst from the water, right beside Donut causing him to lose his balance and stumble into the water. I immediately halted to turn around and collect him, finding Donut wet but fine, floating a few feet behind me.

"You alright?" I asked.

{Better than that Mantine will be if he does that again,} he grumbled.

I turned around to spot the Mantine and a few Remoraid watching us from afar. He said something to Donut which annoyed him further.

"What happened?"

{He's basically saying 'You're too careful, it's boring'. It's not like I've ever done this before dude!} Donut fired back.

Mantine slapped the water, scolding Donut echoed by his Remoraid group. "What now?"

{Apparently, he thinks I can do way better, I just need motivation. Why don't people let me half ass things?} Donut grumbled.

"Well I mean… you are pretty dexterous, maybe you can do better?"

{Not you too, Zio.}

"Listen, I don't wanna force you, but I also know full well how adept you are. You don't like to admit or prove it, but you're capable. If this random stranger can see that, maybe we should try and show that," I suggested.

{Mmm,} he grumbled.

"Or just do it out of spite. Surf better than the surfing pokemon," I added.

{Now that I can try,} Donut stated as he gripped his end again. {Let's go!}

Spite always wins.

Smiling, I faced off against Mantine and nodded. We were gonna have ourselves a surfing competition.

For the rest of the day we were on the water racing against Mantine and his crew of Remoraid. Both Donut and myself had to hyper focus on avoiding their splashes and water attacks as we tried to impress them with our surfing. It took several tries and with both of us barely hanging on after several water gun hits, but we kept going on.

My turns became sharper and cleaner as I adjusted to the motions of the water. This provided more challenge for Donut to stay balanced, but he was in the zone now, raw energy brimming from his body, his eyes hyper focused as he adjusted himself at every turn.

The deeper we skied into the ocean, the larger their waves became and harder it became to surf. At this point, Donut was doing midair tricks whilst avoiding Mantine's attempts to splash him. Mantine soared by us, giving an affirming nod as they dove ahead of us, glowing a bright blue.

What move is coming next?

I immediately had my answer once an extra large wave began to form several yards ahead of us, with Mantine at the helm. It was the largest Surf I had seen, befitting a water type using it in the vast ocean. Mantine and all his watery might was coming straight for us, our ultimate challenge. And we just had to meet him head on.

"Donut!" I shouted, grabbing the last resort from my bag.

In my hand was the most pure Thunderstone I had found in all my years in the Underground. The one I had been saving for Donut all this time, never knowing when to use it. Until right now.

Donut's eyes widened as soon as he saw it before smirking with mischievous glee. He knew just as well as I did how epic this was going to be.

"It's time to split the sea! Boost yourself with Surf and strike a way forward!" I shouted, as I tossed the Thunderstone straight at him.

Donut discarded everything he wore and leapt towards the Thunderstone. As soon as his finger touched it, the evolution began in a blinding flash of light. His yellow fur began to shift to orange and cream.

His body grew, becoming rounder from the ears, arms and legs. His sharp tail began to elongate and smoothen as it took on a new shape. A new pulse of energy resonated from him along with the lightning crackling out from his form.

What felt like an eternity only took a blink of an eye as the energy dispersed and what emerged was an Alolan Raichu surfing across the water effortlessly.

Without missing a beat, Donut shrouded himself in the same blue sheen that Mantine had earlier, before summoning a tiny wave speeding him across the water even faster. Only once he was well ahead of me did Donut manipulate the water to propel himself high into the sky. Well above even Mantine's swelling surf as his tail began to glow with a fighter's power. With his new power, he swung with his tail straight down the middle of the wave, cutting it in half and dispelling it.

Mantine narrowly avoided getting hit by the energy lash, meanwhile I was able to ski through without issue as the wall of water collapsed in on itself. With the ocean now back to a peaceful state, Donut floated down next to me casually sitting on his brand new tail.

{Sure showed him, didn't we?} He huffed proudly.

I breathed a sigh of relief, letting go of the handles to flex my hands. "Like we always do."

The Mantine and Remoraid appeared a short difference, in awe of Donut's skill.

{Now that's what I expected and a bit extra,} the Mantine spoke, with me now being able to understand him due to Rogelio's blessing. {That was an exhilarating competition. You're a master surfer already, strange Raichu.}

{As annoying as you were… I did have a lot of fun, so thanks. Catch ya later, yeah?} Donut replied.

Mantine and the Remoraid squirted a light shower in agreement before diving back into the water out of sight. With that sorted out, Donut turned his attention to the gear he discarded, psychically pulling it back over to us.

{So… I think we got everything we needed from this little trip. Race you home?} He suggested.

"You're on!" I exclaimed, leaning back in, ready to go.

{I was hoping you'd say that,} Donut winked, before he essentially vanished from where I had seen him.

I looked around to see an orange blur speeding across the water and clearly already back home. I sighed in exasperation as I revved up my jet ski and followed his oh so accommodating afterimages back to shore.

Time: May 8th - Noon

When we had returned from our seafaring adventure, everyone had a multitude of questions. Where we had gone, what we were doing, why were we soaking and why Donut was psychically raiding the entire kitchen? I had sort of figured him evolving was gonna be obvious since all our friends had been on an evolution spree, but I guess not.

Regardless, we had a quick celebration before the night ended. Amethyst, Rheneas and even Rogelio were eager to welcome him to the psychic only club. Amethyst especially was eager to teach him her tricks. Lou was more so interested in testing his speed after witnessing how quickly he crossed the sea.

So the very next day we took everyone's speed out for a test drive.

"How long have they been at this?" Jade asked.

"Almost three hours, they're close to finishing, watch," I said, pointing to my laptop screen.

On it was footage of Amethyst, Lou and Donut racing all over the city. They placed floating hoops all over the city for them to fly through, and they had to go through each one to validate a lap no matter where it floated off to. For three hours straight. Meliae was also participating, but while she couldn't match their unreal speed, I did inform her with training that she could outspeed planes.

The hoops all had cameras to capture everyone as they flew by, but… all it captured were orange, blue and white blurs the entire three hours. None of them slowed down at all the entire time, in fact they got even faster and better with their turns. I had never seen Donut go so long with training without a break.

"They are here," Violet calmly stated as three different blurs rushed past the final hoop before any of us could process.

Amethyst descended first, not even out of breath as she headed straight towards Jade who held out a specially made carbos smoothie. Next was Lou who got a special carbos infused jelly. Then very close behind came Donut, surfing in to get his carbos cookies.

{Who won?} Lou asked immediately.

{Me, naturally,} Amethyst boasted before grinning at the other two. {You two did good though!}

{I felt like I was getting close near the end,} Donut figured, sitting on his tail munching on his cookie.

"You did well for your first flight race," I said as I showed them an extremely high speed recording of the final few seconds. Amethyst did in fact win, followed by Lou and then Donut. "But judging by the data, you two improved more over the course of the race to keep up. It's just that Amethyst's base speed and her own growth edged you two out."

{Let's also not forget,} she noted, pointing at Lou, {That you haven't even had your wings for a year,} she pointed to Donut next, {and you haven't had your psychic abilities for a full day yet.} She gestured to herself. {I fly everywhere and I've been using the same psychic abilities I use to fly all the time since I was born. It'd be a bit weird for me to not win, at least for a while.}

"Still impressive though, I'm so used to you warping everywhere. Never figured you were a speedster too," Jade mused.

She wagged a paw at him. {You know humans learn to walk before they run? The same thing applies here. But yeah, I typically stay close to Violet or warp, so I don't usually get to flex my speed.}

{Seems I overestimated myself. I must supplement my inability to warp by increasing my flight speed. This training exercise was productive, I vote we make it routine,} Lou suggested.

"Amethyst and Donut, do you agree with this arrangement?" Violet asked, in which both nodded. "I will add it the regiment and inform Jade to prepare more Carbos based food items ahead of time."

"So Lou I understand, but how is Donut so fast already?" Jade questioned, gesturing to Donut floating around whimsically on his brand new tail.

"Donut, despite his laziness, has always been exceptionally fast. It's his biggest strength. Looks like his physical speed correlates to his psychic speed mostly. Plus, unlike Lou, he didn't have to learn as many new body parts so fast," I explained.

Amethyst snapped her paw fingers, pointing at Donut. {Oh yeah, important thing; you were following mine and Lou's lines too closely. I'm used to it and he's a bug so it comes naturally, but you need to work on taking smooth curves before you can make sharp angled ones. The surfing leans into that, so work your way up, yeah?}

{Hmmm,} Donut pondered, swinging on his tail a bit, {That makes sense. Just like how I learned to surf. I've gotta say, going from no psychic powers to all of them is weird.}

{How so?} Lou asked.

Donut levitated closer to the grassy ground, eyeing it conspicuously before flying back up, showing off his little paws. {Running around doesn't feel as natural anymore or if I tried, I don't think it'd work as well. I have zero need to touch the ground.}

{Yeah, I get that. I would say still practice your maneuvers off the tail every once in a while. Dark moves can really futz with our PSI and you always want a back-up plan,} Amethyst pointed out.

{I've never seen you use any back-up plan,} Donut noted.

She smirked at him mischievously. {Because my other plans work.}

"On that note since you two are finished already, we do have a psychokinesis training session next," I added, glancing at Donut. "But you prolly want a break, right?"

Donut looked at me curiously tilting his head before realizing what I meant. {Oh, you think I'm tired? Yeah, that makes sense if I were a Pikachu I'd way be over this… honestly, as weird as it is to admit this, I'm not at all really. Flying isn't a chore, so I can do more.}

Wow, he's willingly accepting training, what the hell kind of evolution hormones was he pumped up with?

Amethyst grinned, floating towards the beach. {Evolution's a heckuva drug, ain't it? C'mon, I'll walk you through to where you can control individual sand grains, it's great to be able to do that.} Surprisingly, Donut didn't cringe at the possible difficulty of such a task, instead floating right behind her.

{You don't walk though,} Zenara noted curiously. Which got a laugh from Amethyst.

"You gonna join us, Lou?" I asked, noting he wasn't coming along.

{No, while I do intend to supplement this lesson at a later date, I have business with the Compound Corps,} he explained, flying towards the exit. {Holyn, Zenara and myself are going patrolling with Gautier and some fellow soldiers.}

{We'll let you know how he is when we get back, Jade!} Holyn promised, running up to him with Zenara.

"He's just down the route Holyn, but… thanks," Jade smiled, waving.

"Alright, see ya later guys," I said, bidding them farewell as the trio dashed off to Route 222. Yet… I couldn't shake the feeling that if anyone needed a break, it was Lou.

PoV: Holyn the Cranidos

Location: Route 222 Wilderness

Time: May 8th - Afternoon

When I agreed to go on patrol I thought we'd just be walking around the forest, talking with friends and eating berries. I kind of forgot that it could end up being dangerous.

Three Murkrow flew towards me all glowing in dark energy, weaving between the trees to confuse me, but I wasn't going to be caught off guard. The first one charged too recklessly, going for a low dive so I did a little hop and kicked him in the back of the head straight into the tree behind me.

The second Murkow was a bit more cautious circling behind me and then going for the strike. I whirled around and jumped headfirst, tackling him straight into the gut and knocking the air right out of them.

The final one looked like they really didn't want to get closer and began sending air saws at me. I focused on my target and kicked a stone shard straight through them all, knocking the Murkrow right out of the air.

I barely had a second to think before my instincts spiked and I turned around to catch a Staravia's wing attack in my jaw, eating their movement. They got ready to smack me away with their free wing as I channeled the power of frost and blasted them into the ground with a point blank Ice Beam. Before they could recover, I dashed forward and I punted them a fair distance away, listening to them squawk in panic.

I watched as the three Murkrow I beat earlier followed behind their defeated Staraptor in a panic. I turned around to see Zenara and Gautier finish up smacking around some Pelipper, meanwhile Lou and Tanya had taken care of a Skarmory and Swellow. All of them quickly took flight, heading back to their territory.

Once the coast was clear, Lou buzzed something at some bushes and the multiple Wurmple, Kricketot and Burmy we saved popped out encircling Lou, Tanya and Gautier buzzing happily about stuff neither Zenara or I could understand. When they finished, the little bugs crawled over to us warbling what I think was their thanks before returning to the bush.

Lou took to the skies, darting through the forest quickly surveying the area before coming down to us. {No injuries or casualties and all avians have returned to their territory. Conflict resolved perfectly, well done everyone.}

Zenara whooped gladly, playfully bumping Lou with her head. {Another adventure done!}

Tanya buzzed approvingly. {Quick and efficient, as it should be.} She glanced at Gautier. {What did you learn from this battle, soldier?}

{We must always stay vigilant, especially on the border for hunting birds, ma'am!} Gautier blinked to attention.

{And what of their formations?}

As Tanya quizzed Gautier more about what he learned from the fight, while Lou and Zenara talked, I took a second to wander around on my own and think.

It's been a couple months since I left Oreburgh and started traveling with Topaz and everyone. I've always wanted to be adopted, find a trainer that'd love me and see the world outside of the terrarium. I thought it'd always be easy going fun times, but turns out the world is a lot more tragic and complicated then I thought.

I was still getting used to traveling to different environments. I still felt odd around forests, there weren't many trees in Oreburgh and Sunyshore is mostly beach and water. Lou invited us to go patrolling, which sounded like loads of fun, but then we saw some birds trying to eat some little bugs and then we had to fight.

I always thought my life would be less serious, but after all the fights I've been in and stories I've heard, I've come to understand how harsh the world was. My own problems started to feel small in comparison. I don't mind fighting, I think I've gotten really good at it too. But the stronger I got, the more I thought about what I fought for.

I wonder how they're doing…

I felt Zenara's paw on my dome. {You doing okay? You're making Topaz thinking faces.}

{I am!?} I gasped. I didn't know I was smart enough to make those faces.

She laughed. {Like, baby versions, but still.} She bonked my head with her own. I really appreciated when she did that. {What's up?}

{Oh ummm, I was just thinking about home- I mean, where I was born,} I elaborated. {We don't have a lot of green where I'm from outside of the terrarium.}

She nodded a little. {Yeah, I heard you were from a stony place. Would you wanna go back and visit? It could be fun!}

I looked down in thought. {It hasn't been that long since I left. Plus, Topaz is too busy training Donut and Lou has all these responsibilities he has to take care of. Maybe when everyone has more time.}

She gave me a more somber smile. {Sure, but I know Violet and Amethyst would get ya there in a heartbeat if you asked. Being able to go say hi to your family's not something everyone can do, after all. They'd make sure you could do that, and you know they're smart enough to figure out ways to work on stuff they could only do there.}

I looked at her thoughtfully before nodding. {Yeah, you're right. I think I will! But not yet though, I wanna see more of the world, so I can tell them about it like when other terrarium pokemon come back to visit.}

She smiled brightly again. {Now that's a plan! We can go do lots of stuff together and tell 'em all about it!}

{Guys, we're gonna continue patrolling, you ready?} Gautier buzzed from behind.

{Coming!} I called as we followed behind, but I didn't want the conversation to end. {What I really want to tell them about is the Great Marsh. It really reminded me of the terrarium, but… more. It felt like I was born in a place like that. You know what I mean?}

She nodded, making a thinking face for a moment before looking at me with a grin. {It wasn't like that for me, but I totally get it! I was born at the gym, and it feels close, but it feels better to be out and about.}

{My parents told me that millions of years ago, Cranidos used to live in jungles, so maybe that's why I felt that way…} I pondered.

{You wanna explore more jungly places?}

{Are there more in Sinnoh?} I asked.

{The Battle Zone has some,} Gautier interjected. {I saw a bit before I joined up with Jade. Very hot, tropical, rain… jungly.}

Zenara shot finger guns at him. {Yeah like that! Violet and Amethyst said a lot of Sinnoh's colder and there's more cold forests, but there's places to go! The Battle Zone's island, next time we go to Alola you can get a feeling for it, and maybe we could go to Hoenn so you could see how those places feel too!}

{Oooh, summer trip! We can all go and we can ask Clarabel and her team to come along too!} I cheered.

She fist pumped excitedly. {More adventures await!}

{If we have the time,} Lou said, floating close to us. {But we can ask the others when we get back. I think a vacation would be good though. Our group has expanded quite a bit since last year, hasn't it Zenara?}

She nodded brightly. {So much has happened too! A lot more things happen nowadays, and we all evolved!}

Tanya clicked in agreement, smirking at Lou. {I still fondly remember you bringing her as an excitable little Mareep to the Hive, so she could learn our ways. She may not be a bug quite like us, but she's certainly an honorary one.}

Zenara's eyes brightened as she looked back at me. {When Loulou first brought me, it took a sec for everybody to work out that I had wool and they had silk. It's a lot like what Joltik and Galvantula make, but less sticky and more bouncy!}

{I'm still getting used to the place myself, but I would like to believe I'm proving useful. I even thought I was close to evolving the other day, but then Lou started training me and for some reason it feels even farther…} Gautier pondered.

Zenara thought a moment, then shrugged. {I never got that, but I don't really remember a time without Loulou, so I dunno.}

{I've been told by my Corps peers that I am anti-evolution. I am nothing of the sort, it's just that if you are going to evolve, it ought to be perfect!} Lou replied.

Zenara gave him a weird look while Tanya just rolled her eyes. {Those are simple theories as to why it took you longer to evolve than they expected. I say you wait until the time is right.} She flexed her arms, wings buzzing slightly. {I'm quite glad I didn't settle, myself. You taught me to seek the best form you can, and that's served me well.}

{I won't settle either… but I really do want to become a Rampardos soon!} I added, hopping onto a log. {You guys should see them! They're one of the strongest pokemon in the world, nothing can stop us!}

{That just means I'ma have to keep training to keep up!} Zenara cheered, before giving me a curious look. {Why soon, though?}

I chuckled awkwardly. {You'd know why if you saw them. They're really cool! My parents can destroy cities if they wanted to, easily!}

While Zenara began asking for more details, I glanced behind us to see Clover descending from the sky. She waved at us, but beckoned Lou closer and he immediately flew over. Looked like they were having an important conversation.

{Does Chief Clover usually leave the Hive?} Gautier asked.

Tanya nodded. {Not all the time, but she's not a leader who simply sits back and watches. If she has something to say, unless it's highly confidential, she's perfectly ready and willing to deliver such messages herself.} She clicked her mandibles together, sharpening her axes against each other. {And that's to say nothing of when she leads a squadron herself.}

{I hope I become worthy enough to receive confidential tasks from the commander in chief personally,} Gautier blinked.

Lou's so important. Within our own team, at the gym, with the Corps and prolly some other places. What can I do though?

I looked at Zenara and Gautier. Gautier and I joined the group at the same time, so we clicked fast and Zenara really helped us feel more comfortable so we've been best friends ever since. Rogelio also pops in to check in on me randomly in between his random explorations.

But now Zenara is helping Violet with her machines, Gautier joined the army and Rogelio is learning how to be a better legend…

{Zenara, if Violet and Amethyst ever need special gems just ask me okay? Topaz has been helping me train my seismic sense so I can find rare rocks like Ampharosite,} I explained before turning to Gautier and Tanya. {You can let Jade know too that if he needs rocks for his potions I can help or if you need more of that augurite stuff, I can find those too.}

Tanya clicked approvingly. {I'll keep that in mind. I'm sure we'll request that skill in the future.}

{Thanks Holyn, I will too. Jade has been wanting to try more potent potions… and he actually asked me to find something around the area while I was out here. I'll be right back,} Gautier said as he scampered off.

Zenara tilted her head, giving me a curious look. Topaz, Violet and Amethyst all said I was good at figuring people out, and especially after she evolved, Zenara seemed to be picking up more on that herself. She nodded to herself, pulling me in close for a hug before grinning at me. {Y'know, Violet and Amethyst are really good at figuring out what people can do. They actually have a project I think you and Topaz might really like, and you're the best one we've got to help figure it out s'more.}

Now I was interested. {What kind of project?}

She smiled brightly. {It's gonna involve a whole lotta rocks!}

I jumped to full attention. Sure, maybe my problems were less dramatic than everyone else's, but what mattered most was that they helped me solve them anyway.

A/N: And to start off the journey to chapter 100, Donut has evolved! Took way longer than I intended, but that's finally sorted. Also Holyn got his first PoV moment, felt very fitting for him. Over time I'd like to try more points of view.
