The Trial of Bartemius Crouch Jr. Part 1

(With Amelia Bones)

Amelia woke early that day. She wanted to make sure she was prepared. Bartemius Crouch Junior's trial was that day. The head of law enforcement knew it was going to be a long and exhausting trial. Hopefully this would shed some light on what happened to Harry Potter. There was still no trace of the boy.

'At least he no longer has to compete.' She thought.

"Mistress, breakfast is ready." Tilly, her house elf said.

"I shall be right down." She said,

"Yes mistress." She bowed and left.

Amelia quickly changed and then went to the dining room. She ate her food before leaving. Once she was in her office at work she grabbed everything she needed. A knock at the door distracted her for a second.

"You scared me." She said.

"Sorry." Fudge said.

"It's alright. Did you need something?" She asked.

"I'm just checking in to make sure you are ready for the trial." He answered.

"I am. I will make sure the world knows the truth and justice is done." She said.

"Good. Someone paid for a lawyer for him. Lady Wells." He told her.

"The top criminal defense attorney." She snorted.

"Indeed." He was annoyed by that.

"Do you know who?" She asked.

"Not yet." He answered.

"Well unfortunately for her we have a lot of evidence." She said.

"That we do. You know she is going to try and stop you from using veritaserum on her client, right?" He asked.

"I know but she can't change the laws. He has been charged with terrorism." Amelia said.

"I know but you know how she is." He said.

"I do." She sighed. "Anyway, any luck with finding Potter?" She asked.

"No." He looked so guilty and disappointed.

"I really hope he is safe." She said.

"So do I."

"I'm ready." She said.

"Then let's get going." He wanted to get the trial done and over with.

"Of course." She nodded and followed him out.

Amelia entered the courtroom and went to her table. She put her things down and began to organize them. As she did so the courtroom filled with spectators. Many wanted to see what was going to happen with the death eater. They also wanted to hear everything he did. Soon Lady Wells entered.

"Good afternoon Madam Bones." She gave her a smile.

"Good afternoon Lady Wells." She offered her hand.

"Have you found Mr. Potter yet?" She asked. "The next task is coming up."

"Not yet." She answered.

"Hard to find someone when you focus on other things." She commented.

"It is. Shame when crimes are continuously committed." She countered.

"True." She gave a nasty smirk.

"Unfortunately." She said, inwardly smirking at the slight eye twitch she had caused.

Wells decided to end her conversation with Amelia. She went to sit at her table. Soon her client was brought in. He was looking rough which is what Wells planned. She wanted the Wizengamott to feel sympathy towards him. Amelia realized this and wanted to roll her eyes.

"All rise for our esteemed minister, Cornelius Fudge." One auror said.

The whole courtroom stood. They only sat after the minister did. He gave them a serious look. He really hoped no one decided to act up. He soon started the trial.

"Prosecution may begin with their opening statement." He said.

"Thank you, Minister." She bowed her head before standing. "Bartemius Crouch Jr was convicted of crimes he committed during the war as a death eater. At one point we were led to believe he died in Azkaban but he did not. His parents helped him to escape. He lived with his father until last year. He then kidnapped a retired auror and took his place as a teacher at Hogwarts. There he managed to trick a powerful artifact into making Harry Potter a champion. While at school he performed forbidden magic as well as planned to revive his master, Voldemort." The name made multiple people flinch. "By the end of this trial you will see he is guilty and needs to be locked away. Thank you." She said before sitting down.

"Defense, you may speak." He said.

"Why thank you Minister." She smiled at him.

'Is she flirting with him?' Amelia wondered.

'Please tell me she isn't trying to flirt with me.' Fudge internally begged.

Lady Wells stood up and walked over to the Wizengamott. "Good afternoon everyone. We are here because the ministry believes my client is this evil person. I will show you all that he is a victim of his father's abuse and neglect. He is a victim, not a monster. Thank you." She went to sit down.

"Prosecution, you may call your first witness." He said.

"Thank you. I would like to call Minerva Mcgonagall to the stand." She said.

Minerva stood and went to the stand. She gracefully sat down. She then looked at Amelia as the woman walked over to her. Amelia gave her a smile.

"Before we begin I must ask if you would give us permission to use veritaserum on you?" She asked.

"Yes." She said, knowing this means the defense had less to object to.

"Thank you. Healer Rees?" She looked at the woman.

The healer administered the potion. She asked a few test questions. Once that was done she revealed the potion was working properly. Amelia nodded and started to question her.

"What happened during the time Crouch Jr. was impersonating ex auror Moody?" She asked.

"He introduced the children to the forbidden curses and even performed them. He defended Heir Potter after his name was called. He seemed very interested in heir Potter and making sure he survived the tournament. He even turned heir Malfoy into a ferret when the boy tried to attack heir Potter from behind. He was very frantic when heir Potter disappeared and seemed determined to find him." She answered.

"Did that make you question the retired auror?" She asked.

"It did. I wasn't friends with Alastor Moody but I did know that some of that wasn't like him. He would never have defended someone on the spot, even a close friend. He would wait until he had evidence to support their innocence or guilt. With how frantic he was about heir Potter's disappearance gave me concern. He would have been worried if there was evidence of foul play but all evidence led to heir Potter running away." She answered.

"Thank you. Those are all my questions at the moment." She sat down.

"You may ask your questions now Lady Wells." Fudge said.

"Thank you minister." She said in a flirtatious way.

"You're welcome." He said. 'Why is she flirting with me? Is this her attempt to sway me?' He wondered.

'Ew.' Amelia wanted to roll her eyes.

'What is she doing?' Many wondered.

"Now professor Mcgonagall, did you try to report his behavior?" Wells asked her.

"I reported it to the headmaster after he used the unspeakables and after the ferret incident." She answered.

"What did he say?" She asked.

"That he would talk to him but just believed he was trying to prepare the students for the real world." She answered.

"Did my client ever harm a student?" She asked.

"Yes." She answered.

Wells' eyes widened with surprise at that. "Who did he hurt and how?" She asked.

"Neville Longbottom and Draco Malfoy. He used the cruciatus curse in a class with heir Longbottom." Mcgonagall told her. "As for heir Malfoy, well, he bounced the poor boy around in the air. When he turned heir Malfoy back the child fell to the ground, hard."

"But he didn't use the curse on heir Longbottom?" She asked.

"No." She answered.

"Then how was he harmed?" She asked.

"Neville Longbottom was mentally harmed. His parents were tortured by the curse." She reminded them all. "Even now the boy has panic attacks, nightmares, and can't be near the actual Alastor Moody."

"R-right." She cursed herself for forgetting.

"Crouch Jr was one of the participants that night his parents were tortured. Now that he knows Crouch jr was the one teaching and even cast the curse in front of him he has been even more traumatized. His grams had to take him home." She continued.

"No more questions." Wells knew the woman made her client look guilty and sadistic. 'I would say something about that brat Malfoy but she would just cause more damage.'

"Prosecution?" He looked at Amelia.

"I have no questions." She said, wanting to smirk.

"Give her the potion and she may step down." Fudge said.

"Yes sir." The healer did as told.

"Thank you." Amelia said.

"You're welcome." She said, returning to her seat.

"You may call your next witness." He told Amelia.

"I call Draco Malfoy." She said.

"What?" Rees was surprised by that.

Lucius Malfoy had contacted her and informed her of the ferret incident. He wasn't impressed. He didn't care that the man was a death eater. He wanted him to pay for what he had done to his son. He knew about the veritaserum being used and also knew he had nothing to hide. Amelia agreed to call him to the stand.

The blonde strode to the stand. He sat down and waited. Since he was a minor his father or mother was the one that needed to consent to the potion. His father came up and gave his permission. He then watched as he was given it. He then went and sat back down. The look he shot Wells promised pain if she tried anything with his son.

"Crouch Jr, as professor, Moody turned you into a ferret?" She asked.

"He did." He answered.

"Why?" He asked.

"Heir Potter and I don't get along. I believed he had put his name into the cup to get attention. That day I was taunting him and he returned it as well. He said I was a mindless sheep and that pissed me off. I am ashamed to admit that I did draw my wand on him when his back was turned but I hadn't said a spell. I was going to wait for him to turn around before doing anything. Next thing I know I was turned into a ferret and bounced around in the air. Professor Mcgonagall stopped him and told him turning students into animals wasn't an appropriate punishment. He told her it should have been but she gave him a very pointed look. He changed me back while I was still in the air. I landed on the ground, hard. I scraped my elbow and my muscles were very stretched. I was sent to the hospital wing to get healed." He answered.

"Was that the only incident with the man?" She asked.

"No it wasn't. That was just the first out of five." He told her.

"Can you tell us about the other four incidents?" She asked.

"Yes ma'am. The next incident happened a few days later. I had written to my father and the professor heard about it. He cornered me in the hallway. He called me a coward and a daddy's boy. He then told me he knew he had to keep an eye on me. He left after that but it did scare me. I told professor Snape but nothing happened. Third incident happened in his classroom. He had the other students practice spells on me and I wasn't allowed to block him. I told professor Snape and tried to tell my dad but according to professor Snape, the headmaster said I was lying. My dad said he never received my letter. Fourth incident happened a couple days before Harry Potter disappeared. He cornered me again in the hall. Told me he should change me into a ferret permanently. He warned me that if I tattled again there would be consequences. I was going to tell my father when I went he visited me for the holidays. The final incident occurred after Harry Potter disappeared. He wanted to know what I did to heir Potter but I had nothing to do with it. He took out his wand before he saw professor Mcgonagal and he put his wand away and left. I told professor Snape what happened. I would have told professor Mcgonagal but she was busy with another student." He answered.

"Did you notice if he seemed to be obsessed with heir Potter?" She asked.

"No. I tried my best to avoid him." He answered.

"Thank you. Those are my questions." She said.

"Alright. Defense?" He looked at Wells.

"I have a few." She purred.

"..." He didn't respond to her flirting.

"Now heir Malfoy you and heir Potter are known rivals. Wouldn't it be reasonable that anyone seeing you pointing a wand at heir Potter's back would think you were attacking him?" She asked.9

"Yes but no teachers have ever turned me into a ferret before." He told her.

That made her frown. "True but he was protecting his student, correct?"

"Possibly. I don't know his motives but all other teachers would have taken my wand and put a shield up around heir Potter." He said.

"If he was cornering you so much, how come headmaster Dumbledore didn't stop him?" She asked.

"I have no clue. From what I gathered he thought I was lying. I also believe he was favoring his friend over a Slytherin. He has done it before. Heir Potter and his friends were always being rewarded for breaking the rules." He said.

"Maybe you were lying?" She asked, forgetting he couldn't at the moment.

"Heir Malfoy is under the truth potion." The minister reminded her.

"R-right." She blushed in embarrassment.

"Do you have any more questions for him?" He asked after a few minutes of silence,

"No." She said.

"Prosecution?" He looked at Amelia.

"No." She said.

"Give him the reversal potion." He ordered.

"Yes sir." The healer did as told.

"Thank you, heir Malfoy. You may go back to your parents." He said.

"You're welcome minister." The blonde said.

Draco stood up and went to his parents. His mom took him out of the courtroom. His father stayed to see the rest of the trial. He hoped for the man to be kissed. No one harassed his son and got away with it.

The prosecution called a few more witnesses. For the first time in her career Wells wasn't doing so well creating doubt for her client. She did have a few witnesses but they didn't help as much as she thought they would. Soon it was time for her client to be put onto the stand.

"Objection! My client isn't legally obligated to take the stand unless he wants to!" She said.

"Actually he does. In this case he is being charred with being a terrorist. Therefore he has to take the stand and take the potion. He doesn't legally have that choice to say no. Overruled." He said.

'Damn it.' She thought as her client was escorted to the stand.
