Chapter 40 The Hall of heroes
Blue Lions classroom
Dimitri saw Sasuke enter the classroom and couldn't help but notice he had a peaceful look on his face, much more peaceful than the day before. It was a kind of look he had never seen, a contentment he didn't need to ask about to know what happened last night.
Sonia was next to him, looking at Sasuke curiously.
"His body language suggests he is happy and nervous," Sonia said, observing Sasuke.
"Of course he would be nervous. He met Mercedes's mom. I would too, considering, for a Uchiha, first impressions are everything," said Sylvain.
"what do you mean?" Sonia asked.
"Family is everything in the Uchiha clan, and making a good first impression is essential for a potential spouse," Neji answered.
"Makes sense. Doesn't sound much different from how we do things in Faerghus," Sylvain replied.
"'I'm starting to see why Sasuke chose this house, considering how much his values align with yours,'" Neji said observantly.
" I can't help but find it sad that an entire culture was destroyed in a single night," Sonia said, commenting on the Uchiha clan massacre which she had learned about the day prior.
"Did our loverboy confess to Mercedes?" asked Felix, who had just arrived at the table.
"Sylvain said, "I still think Mercedes confessed first.""
"Highly unlikely, it was definitely Sasuke," said Felix.
"Really, it shouldn't matter. The tender moments between those two are none of our concern." Dedue said, respecting Sasuke and Mercedes's privacy.
"Isn't it Sasuke's birthday in 2 days?" asked Felix.
"Let's throw a surprise party for him. We should talk to Naruto. He may know what to do, after all, they are friends," said Annette, who had just sat at the table next to her boyfriend.
"Sorry, I can't help but see that I'm sorry if this comes a little too forward. Are you two dating?" Sonia asked awkwardly.
"Yeah, well." Annette was struggling to form a proper sentence.
"Sonia, you should be more careful about the kind of questions you ask people," said Yuri teasingly.
"Sorry, I may be acting improperly. I'm new to this many people. It's overwhelming," Sonia said, apologizing to Annette and Felix.
"Really, it's not a problem. At least she's not as bad as her brother," Sylvan joked.
"What do you mean not as bad as my brother?"Sonia said, stuttering, barely able to get the words out.
"Your brother, when he first came to the monastery, had difficulties communicating with people. I mean it's a miracle he could teach as well as he did, considering how socially awkward he was and borderline antisocial." Sylvan.
"Come on, he couldn't be that bad?" said Sonia.
"Though to be fair, Marianne wasn't much different than him in that regard. In fact, he's still a little socially awkward, except when it comes to her. I don't know who he's fooling, thinking he's trying to hide that." Before Sylvain could say anymore, he was elbowed by Felix.
"Come on, really?" Sylvain said, faking pain.
"Whatever the Black Eagles professor does is none of our concern," Felix said, annoyed.
"While I may not know the most about social norms, I do know that it's not socially acceptable for a professor to be involved with his students. You don't have an issue with it?" asked Sonia, confused.
"Actually, I don't know much about what goes on between them. They are pretty private about their personal lives. We just turn the other way because, well, he's not doing anything nefarious, and not to mention, he treats all of his students fairly."Dimitri said.
"Yeah, but he's romantically involved with her. I was able to see that when I first met him at the festival a month ago," Sonia said.
"'Well, I don't want to get involved anywhere near the relationship. No, thank you. I stay away from that with a 10-foot pole,' " said Felix, not wanting to get involved.
"'Well, at least we don't have to deal with the banshee anymore. We have peace and quiet for a change,' said Felix."
"Whatever Sakura's fate brings her, it will be tied to the house leader in some way," said Shion. It was quiet throughout the entire exchange.
"Which brings me to another curious question, Shion. You have mysterious abilities to be able to see into people's futures. How does your power work?" Sonia asked curiously.
"'I would rather not talk about it,' Shion said with clenched teeth. Dimitri immediately picked up that it was a sore subject. Sylvain immediately decided to crack a joke."
"You know the banshee being in the black Eagles could make it easier for us to win the Eagle and the Lion,"everyone laughed, including Shion Dimitri, who did not understand what was funny.
"Let's cut the chatter before Professor Manuela and Asuma Sensei enter our class," said Dimitri. As if on cue, they both entered, and everyone went to their respective seats to listen to the upcoming lesson about the history of the Third Great Ninja War involving the five nations and how it shaped the current landscape of the continent.
Dimitri looked at Sonia, who had her book open as instructed by Manuela, and took out a pencil and started taking notes. She was so much better than he was at these things. Maybe he could ask her for assistance?
Though for now he needed to focus on just getting past this history lesson about the land he knows nothing about.
Golden deer classroom
Claude missed having Hilda around. It made things far less dull. He was bored out of his mind. He was relieved at the excitement of the recent incident regarding Byleth and Sonia's mother and her resurrection. Things were returning to normal, at least as normal as things could get, but not normal for Claude. Hilda was in the Black Eagles now. Shez was still in the infirmary, who he would have to visit today to check on how she was doing. Naruto and Dorothea were hiding something. He knew about the fox spirit inside Naruto. Everyone that traveled with him in the abyss did.
He didn't pay attention to the sounds of footsteps. When he looked, it was none other than Ino.
"Are you all right, Claude? You being depressed is not like you," asked Ino, concerned.
"Everything's fine, I'm just thinking," Claude replied, hoping he wouldn't have to elaborate.
"Don't you know we're friends? You don't have to hide anything from me," Ino said, trying to let him know that she considered him a friend.
"Everyone sees what they like to see when they look at people. They never look beneath the surface. When that person shows part of their true self, they act like they've changed. The person they looked up to or loved did not exist at all. Have you ever had that feeling?" Claude asked, turning his face away to not show her what he was thinking. Unlike the others, she was able to see through him. She was very observant.
"I understand that feeling only too well. I show people what I want them to see because people only see the shallow things on the surface. They don't care to know what's beneath. That's how people look at me. There are misconceptions about me that I'm uncaring, that the only thing occupying my mind is boys, when that's far from the truth. I have other ambitions. I'd like to have a flower shop someday to be able to spread my love for flowers to everyone. I've always wanted to do such a thing, but that's not what people think when they look at me. They just see a pretty face." Ino said, standing next to Claude. He turned around and saw the woman in front of him. She had a sad look on her face.
When I first came here, like I told you in the Land of Waves, I thought the people here were uneducated barbarians. I thought they were backwards. I had a difficult time seeing the people here as human, but being here for the past 6 months has been an eye-opener for me. There are women my age who have never seen war. They have never taken a life or held a weapon. Yet, at the age of 12, I went on missions constantly, putting myself in danger, all for the sake of my village. Coming here, I can't help but think how different my life could have been had I not grown up in Konoha. I don't know if I like this feeling. Ino admitted.
"Nothing is wrong with changing your perspective or thinking differently. It's a sign of maturity. It's a sign of being able to accept people's differences. I admire that about you. You are open-minded. I wish the rest of your team was like that," Claude said, referring to Shikamaru and Choji. He didn't want her to think any less of her friends, but he just had to be honest with her.
"They're my friends, Claude. We go way back. Our ancestors go way back. I can't turn my back on that." Ino said, looking away. Claude wanted to do something, say anything.
"I wouldn't want you to." Claude said.
"Your dream, Claude, is beautiful. A world where people can accept their differences and appreciate them, yet still get along and live their lives. I don't know if such a world is possible, but I would like to believe it is." Ino said. Claude didn't know what was coming over him; their faces were very close.
"Wow, I turned my back on you for one second and I find you almost kissing Ino. I'm sorry I ruined your moment," Naruto said with his mischievous smile.
Ino turned away, blushing. Claude did the same, cursing Naruto's timing. Dorothea was by his side, smiling.
"Dorothea said teasingly, "You two make a cute couple."
"'We're not a couple,' " Claude and Ino said at the same time, causing them both to blush even more than was possible.
"Come on, relax, Claude. I'm just teasing," Naruto said.
"Come on, I'm serious. Why not go out on a date or something when you're off? It wouldn't hurt." Naruto said, which caused Claude to look at her. He didn't know if he had the courage.
"Naruto, I wouldn't mind as long as you don't try to follow us and spy on us. No offense, but I will not agree otherwise." Ino said.
"we better hurry up before Jiraiya comes here and makes a comment," said Dorothea as the golden deer sat at their respective tables. It's still bothered Claude why Kakashi wasn't the professor anymore. Why did he leave so suddenly? He thought it was suspicious. Then he saw a man; he was in his fifties, his hair was graying, he wore a brown coat. He was by Jiraiya's side, who looked at the four students with interest.
"Interesting, the son of Minato Namikaze, Kushina Uzumaki, and the daughter of Natalia Arnault are in my class." The man said with fascination as he walked towards where Naruto and Dorothea were.
"Did you know my father and my mother?" asked Naruto.
"Maybe not on a personal level, but they were my students, such great students. Your father and your mother, though, did cause a lot of trouble, which caused a lot of headaches for their friends in their class." The man said, thinking nostalgically of a time long gone.
"Why haven't we seen you until now?" asked Ino, who was as perplexed as Claude, along with Naruto and Dorothea, though they weren't voicing their thoughts.
"After finishing my research at the empire, I've returned to my true passion, which I pursue on the side while teaching here. I'm involved in Crest research, though I doubt any of you from Konoha have a clue what I'm talking about." The old man said.
"Excuse me, but what do we call you?" Naruto asked.
"Sorry, I got carried away, Naruto-san. I am Hanneman von Essar. I hope to be a good professor to you all in the upcoming months, at least until December, when you will return to Konoha and the inhabitants of Fodlan to learn about the land where your friends come from." Hanneman replied respectfully.
"you are a researcher with Crest, why?" Naruto asked with his arms crossed, curious.
"to make it short, it's to learn how crests appear to those who have children with crests or who are descendants of those with crests. There's a lot we don't know despite centuries of research; we've only scratched the surface. My goal is to learn more and potentially give everyone who wants a crest one if they desire it, but I'm getting ahead of myself. I'm probably boring you," the man said as the rest of the golden deer entered.
"Really hope we don't have to do those tedious introductions," said Shikimaru.
"Fear not, I have no intention. I have all your names. I hope to be a good professor for you all. I cannot replace Kakashi Hatake, but I'll make sure you all are given a proper education about this land and the land you will be going to in January." The man said to everyone in the class. They all sat in their proper places. The conversation Claude had with Ino replayed in his mind. He wanted to talk to her some more, but he couldn't. It was impossible. He looked at a piece of paper that Ino wrote for him. He picked it up, and it read.
"Would you like to go out with me on Saturday?" Ino wrote on the piece of paper. He looked at his classmate, who smiled.
He made sure to write a response and he wrote yes, he wouldn't mind, especially if it meant he could have someone to talk to and relax. He was looking forward to it, though he would have to deal with the long lesson first before he could come up with any plans on what he and his date were going to do.
Black Eagles classroom
Edelgard did not want to be alone, not with her, but it was unavoidable. Ever since Hanabi Hyuga transferred, there was constant tension. She had to have tea time alone with this girl multiple times, and the kind of conversation was about the empire's politics and nothing else. Edelgard did not like talking to anyone about the empire's politics, especially an outsider. She couldn't help but feel like the girl was trying to gather as much information as possible, as if she was gathering Intel, though she couldn't prove it.
It was even making it difficult for her to spend time with her girlfriend. Luckily, at least for the moment, she was alone. Though she knew she wouldn't be for long, she turned around and saw Hubert, who also looked concerned about Hanabi's presence.
"Lady Edelgard, I don't know how long we have, so I'll make this quick." Hubert looked around to see that the coast was clear, so nobody was watching them before he spoke.
The other Flame Emperor, whoever our enemy is, has outsmarted us. Our identities are no longer something we can use, even the Black Lion cannot be used. Luckily, our enemies do not know about Lady Hinata. I find it very suspicious that as soon as the second Flame Emperor appeared, Hanabi showed up along with two other women I don't know. I believe any one of those three is likely the Flame Emperor. Hubert said, referring to the mysterious figure that appeared during the battle about almost two weeks ago.
"Yeah, I thought about that myself. The politics of Konoha. Hinata has told me all about it, about how the elite have been wanting a foothold in the empire for years. I cannot prove this, but I do suspect that they may have been involved." She paused, making sure no one could overhear them.
"Are you referring to what happened in Duscur with the King? That has crossed my mind as well that the organization root which I've heard from my contacts in Konoha were involved."Hubert said. Edelgard was thinking deeply about the death of Lambert and Hitomi and the circumstances behind their deaths; it was suspicious.
"Have you told Hinata any of this?" asked Edelgard.
"Not wise, I don't think. We have no proof, and the last thing we need is chasing ghosts. I can't help but think the incidents are connected: the near kidnapping of Hinata Hyuga, the death of her mother, and a few years later, the death of Lambert, the previous King of Faerghus." He looked around again, making sure no one could drop in on their conversation.
"Lady Edelgard, there's something you need to know. Do not repeat anything I've said to anyone, including Lady Hinata. It's for her own safety and yours. You must keep this to yourself. This also involves Dimitri as well." Hubert said. Edelgard was wondering what he was getting at.
"Lady Hinata, she"
Hinata was on her way to her class. As much as she dreaded being in Sakura's presence, she was quiet. She didn't say anything; in fact, she went out of her way to not draw attention to herself. She didn't care one way or the other, as long as the banshee stayed silent, she would have no issues with her. Ingrid was by her side as fateful as ever. She had been thinking about Ingrid's deepest desire to be her Knight. She remembered Dedue's advice regarding how to make Ingrid a Knight and for her to be her lover. It was not something she desired to do lightly, considering what it would ultimately potentially lead to if Hinata were to go back to Konoha. But there was something else as well that bothered her.
"Hina-chan, are you all right?" asked Ingrid, noticing Hinata's distress.
"Hinata said, looking at Ingrid, "I've been thinking about your request from a month ago and how to best serve it, but I'm not sure what the best course of action is."
"Even if you don't want me to be your Knight, I will accept that. As long as I can be part of your life, even as one of your lovers, I'm content," Ingrid said. Hinata didn't want to deprive her of her deepest desires, but it was a difficult decision.
"Give me until the Eagle and the Lion. By then, I'll make my decision," Hinata said, making her decision final. It would be another 3 months before the decision would be made. She needed more time; she couldn't make a decision like that lately.
"Thank you for not shooting it down outright," Ingrid said, looking away.
"Do you know I like us to go on a date the four of us? I don't know what we can do together, but it would be nice. We haven't had a date with just us yet." Hinata said, thinking of all the things that she had done with her partners individually but never together on a date, doing something they all enjoyed.
"Honestly, I wouldn't mind just relaxing, looking up at the sky. Unfortunately, Naru Kun can't ride Grian. I know another beautiful spot we could go to." Ingrid said, sad that Naruto couldn't go with them. But then, Hinata thought about Naruto's jutsu that can turn him into a woman. Would that work?
"Hey Ingrid, I've got an idea, but we'll have to try it out first," Hinata said, thinking of Naruto's jutsu for changing his appearance.
"Let's give it a shot," Ingrid said. The conversation ended abruptly as they entered the classroom, where they saw Edelgard and Hubert finishing their conversation.
It wasn't long before the other Black Eagles arrived one by one. They entered the classroom. Hinata couldn't help but notice Lysithea, who had just woken up. Her eyes were obviously red; she did not sleep in her room.
This wasn't the first time she had done this ever since her girlfriend woke up. Hinata wasn't going to say anything because it wasn't her business, and she didn't want her friend to be embarrassed for spending time with her girlfriend in her hospital room by doing homework there. She waited for the professor to get into the classroom. She saw Byleth and Marianne enter at the same time. Hilda was sitting next to Hinata, looking at their professor as Marianne sat at her usual spot. She couldn't help but look into her professor's eyes; he had barely slept. She had noticed this more; whatever burdens he carried were taking their toll on him.
He's had these burdens ever since the mission where they rescued Monica, but Hinata has noticed it's gotten worse. She can't put her finger on it, but she sees it in his eyes. She sees the difficulty he has sleeping. She'd like to ask Kurama about this when she has the chance. She didn't get a chance to think anymore when the professor told all of the students to open their books to the chapter about the third great ninja war. This is something he hasn't already studied in depth back home, but she could help those who don't know the history as well as she does. When they're in free discussion, she can give further context to whatever the professor talks about.
She listens intently as he explains everything that happened as it happened. This would continue until the bell rang for lunch. She didn't even keep track of the time. When everyone was leaving one by one, she was about to head to her friends when Kurenai stopped her, as if she wanted to speak to her alone.
"Hinata, do you have a moment?" asked Kurenai. She looked where Ingrid was.
"'I'll be joining you in a bit, Ingrid Chan.' Hinata said, nodding and leaving Hinata and her Sensei alone."
"Professor Byleth has barely slept. It's getting worse, and I don't know how to approach this," Kurenai said. Hinata had no idea how to approach it. She would not understand because of the burdens that her professor carries. Hinata herself doesn't understand it, neither does Marianne. How could she possibly explain it to Kurenai?
"Sensei, I don't know how to help him. There are things that I don't think he will talk to me about. I don't want to get too involved with his affairs." Hinata said.
"Understood, but there's another matter I wish to discuss. This comes directly from the Hokage. You are to transfer to the Blue Lions class. These are orders you cannot refuse," her sensei said.
"Are you kidding me? Who's the Hokage to order me to do something when he's on the other side of the world?" Hinata snapped, not realizing that she had raised her voice.
"Your father petitioned the Hokage to make it happen," Kurenai said.
"I refuse,"Hinata said not budging.
"Hinata, these orders come from the Hokage himself; you cannot refuse those orders," Kurenai said, pushing.
"Hinata replied, "I don't care, I'm not going to transfer."
"I don't want you to suffer consequences for refusing him, not that you know what the clan will do to you." Kurenai said, referring to what happened to her mother when she refused, and the consequences she paid, the birdcage seal.
"Despite my refusal, I'm taking my fate into my own hands and I won't let that bastard decide my fate," Hinata said darkly, thinking of the memory where Hiashi nearly beat her to death. It was the day before Dimitri, Edelgard, and Monica left. Kurenai had reported the incident to her mother.
""I'm just looking after you, Hinata," Kurenai insisted.
"Sensei, that creature doesn't get to tell me what to do. I say this with respect, but I will not do what you tell me. I don't care who orders me to do it." Hinata said as she stormed off.
Annette noticed something was off about Hinata. She wasn't her usual self; she looked like she had an argument with someone. Ingrid looked concerned, as did Monica, Bernadetta, Marianne, and Hilda.
"Hina, are you all right?" asked Annette, concerned.
"Nothing, Ann Chan," Hinata said, hoping she wouldn't ask again.
"Is everything alright, Hinata? I hope it's not something bad," Bernadetta asked, concerned about Hinata because she was quieter than usual.
"Sorry, I need some air," Hinata said, excusing herself, shocking everyone but Ingrid with her sudden change in mood.
"Sorry, but what's going on?" asked Annette, confused.
"Her clan is one thing that can sour her mood immediately," said Monica, as if she knew from experience.
"Every time I hear bits and pieces about the Hyuga clan, it sounds awful, except for her and Neji. They tend to be elitist towards those they see as lesser." Said Hilda, looking at Neji and how he was interacting with his classmates, versus Hanabi, who treated her classmates like they were her inferiors.
"They are truly a clan of elitist aristocrats. They are one of the worst of the Konoha elite." Said Monica.
"Is it true that the clan has two houses?" Marianne asked, not understanding the structure of the Hyuga clan.
"Yeah, there are two. One is the main branch, and one is the branch house. Those in the branch house are branded with a seal on their forehead until the day they die. They exist specifically to protect the Byakugan." Monica said. Everyone looked in revulsion at the very idea of slavery. Annette thought it was slavery in all but name.
"Sorry, but how is that supposed to protect the Byakugan and its secrets?"asked Bernadetta.
"By destroying the Byakugan when the person possessing the seal dies," Monica answered. Their whole reason for having the seal is to stop their eyes from falling into the wrong hands. Something seemed off. Why are there two houses? Why not have everyone have the seal so the enemy has no chance of getting the Byakugan? It made no sense.
"Monica the seal on their forehead the splitting of their houses, I don't understand. What is the point? What does a seal do other than protect the Byakugan?" Annette asked, generally wanting to know.
"Honestly, it's sick. Those with the seal on their head are at the mercy of those in the main branch on a daily basis. They can do whatever they wish. It's a disgusting practice that is barbaric." Monica said, trembling with revulsion at the very concept of a curse mark on someone's forehead and their lives being in the palm of the hands of the upper class of the clan.
"Is it any wonder she hates her clan so much?" Bernadetta said with barely controlled anger.
"Since the seal on their heads is supposed to protect the Byakugan, what happens to those who get captured without it? I don't know about you, but that sounds idiotic," said Annette, who thought the idea was stupid. There were other ways they could defend their eyes without enslaving half the clan.
"Who can you expect? Whoever invented the damn thing was incompetent and likely did not know how seals worked," Ingrid said, clenching her fist. It was always as if she already knew this.
"Hina, there's so much I don't know about her, and I wish I could help her," said Annette. She noticed Dimitri walking towards where Hinata was heading. Ingrid wanted to comfort Hinata, but decided against it because Dimitri would do it in her stead.
Dimitri saw Hinata at the same spot days before. He didn't know what to say to her. He didn't know what happened, but he knew it had something to do with her clan. She never acts the way she does otherwise.
He sat next to her. There was silence between them before Dimitri spoke.
"Are you okay, Hinata?" Dimitri asked worriedly. Hinata had a rock in her right hand and threw it across the pond.
"'My clan wants me to transfer to your class.' Hinata said. Dimitri knew there was something more than that. Hinata is generally liked in the Blue Lions. She would be a perfect fit. That could not have been what is upsetting her."
"Hinata was tired of those people trying to control her life. It had nothing to do with her disliking the idea of being in the Blue Lions. Dimitri, some of her best friends were there. It was just..." Hinata was hesitating.
"Making the first choice that's truly my own in my life, there are forces out there trying to make me do what they want. Am I a bad person for wanting to go against what they want?" Hinata looked at Dimitri as if he could hold all the answers. This reminds him of a story his father told him about a woman who defied her family and Joined the Blue Lions instead of the Black Eagles.
"Tomorrow, there is a tribute to Lady Hitomi. I want to show you," Dimitri said, causing Hinata to look at him.
"Has this place paid a tribute to her?" Hinata asked, surprised.
"During the Eagle and the Lion in the year 1155, she led the Blue Lions to a sweeping victory. It was considered the worst defeat the Black Eagles ever suffered in the class's entire history. Her accomplishment has yet to be replicated; no class has ever accomplished what she has."Dimitri said.
"'I never knew my mother. There's so much I don't know.' Hinata said bitterly."
"Did that creature have the right to forbid her from telling me these things? It would have inspired me if I had known, but no, he wanted to tear me down, and." She stopped mid-sentence, knowing that she was going to go on a rant.
"You don't have to hold back when it's just us."Dimitri said reassuringly."
"I hate him,"Hinata confessed referring to Hiashi.
"the horrible things he said and did to my mother," her hands were trembling in it in a rage that Dimitri had not seen before from her. This was deep; the kind of hatred she held for him was the kind of hate that, if it festered long enough, could eventually lead to her lashing out in a way that she would not be able to stop.
"Hinata said, "I will never forgive him, and I shouldn't have to," referring to what he has done to her and her mother."
"Everyone seems to have this image in their heads that I'm the saint that I'm forgiving, but I'm not. I'm far from it. Ever since I came here, ever since I've been free from the confines of the compound, I've been able to discover myself and to accept myself for who I am. I don't know if I can go back to the person that I was before I came here." Hinata said, looking up at the sky.
"Hinata, you are a kind woman. You don't have to change into someone that you don't want to be. You're fine as you are," Dimitri replied.
"Thank you, Dimitri. I appreciate it," Hinata said.
"Will you be available tomorrow?" Dimitri asked Hinata.
"Hinata asked, "I'm not doing anything in particular tomorrow, why?"
"I want to show you the place that I've wanted to show you since the first day you arrived. I've wanted to see it myself, but I wanted to see it with you, alone, preferably."Dimitri said, hoping it wouldn't come off the opposite of what he meant.
"Sure, I wouldn't mind knowing more about my mother. I would love to know more." Hinata said, happy to change the subject to something else.
"Of course, I would like to pay my respects to the lady who had told me as well," Dimitri said as he got up.
"Before I go, can you tell Naruto that the blue Lions need his help? There's a surprise we want to do with Sasuke for his birthday the day after tomorrow, and since Naruto is his friend, I'd like him to be part of it," said Dimitri. Hinata nodded.
"Let me tell Naruto-kun." Hinata said as Dimitri headed back to his friends.
"Every time I learn more about Hinata, the more I like this girl. She reminds me of my best friend from the academy who is no longer with us," Elizabeth said to Mercedes sadly. They were sitting at the tables near the cafeteria, having been talking for hours. It felt relieving not to worry about schoolwork, but she would have to return to class tomorrow.
"Couldn't ask for a better friend. She helped me when I was confused about my feelings." She looked in Sasuke's direction. The woman knew what she was thinking.
"That young man isn't the kind of person I would think would be husband material, but who am I to judge?" Elizabeth said, referring to Sasuke.
"Husband? Of all the things, Mother." Mercedes turned away to hide her embarrassment.
"Come on, don't give me that. There have been plenty of couples that have gotten married less than a year after they met and stayed together for life. There's nothing wrong with you doing that with him," Elizabeth said. Mercedes didn't know what to say to her mother. It was too soon. She always envisioned years of getting to know someone, years of being their friend, before the next step.
"Your father and I got married eight months after we met. There's nothing stopping you two from getting married after you two graduate, of course," Elizabeth said.
" Oh ...Mother, I don't know. It's so soon," Mercedes said.
"After all, Sasuke has to be the one to ask for your hand and get my blessing first before he even will ask you, anyhow," the woman said. Mercedes wanted to know what her mother meant by that. Sasuke had not talked about anything regarding marriage customs with his clan. She never asked. She kept feeling kind of ridiculous not asking about something so obvious because how important family is in his culture.
"what do you mean, mother?" Mercedes asked, wanting to know answers. Her mother likely went to the academy with a Uchiha, so she may have information that she doesn't know. Maybe one of the people she knew might have been Sasuke's mother. She couldn't help but want to ask.
"Mikoto told me at the academy that Uchiha men especially value getting the blessing of their future in-laws before they even consider asking for their spouse's hand because it's considered disrespectful to do so otherwise," Elizabeth said, happy with the idea because what Mercedes knows about her mother is that she would not like anyone asking for her hand without getting her blessing first.
"Be honest with me, if he were to ask for your hand right now, what would you do? What would your answer be?" Elizabeth asked her. She placed her hand on her chest, thinking about it. She visually imagined being someone that Sasuke would come home to, a place to belong the goddess. Would she really allow such a thing? Would she say yes or no if he were to ask.
She remembered his confession and the night of passion that followed. If there was anyone she would want as her husband, it would be him, but she didn't think that would be possible, not with someone like her.
"Mercedes said, "I don't know. I don't think it's likely that he would ask." Her mother didn't look satisfied with her answer."
"Let's put that on hold for now. There's no need to rush, but consider what I'm saying. It may happen sooner than you think," Elizabeth said.
As if on cue, she saw a net along with Ingrid and Naruto, who were happy to see her.
"Mercedes, San, I've heard that you were released. I'm relieved to see that you're okay. Hinata Chan will be relieved to know that you are better now," Naruto said.
"So you are Naruto Uzumaki, you certainly do resemble her and your father." The woman said.
"Wait, your're Mercedes San's mom. I'm sorry for being disrespectful," Naruto said, which caused the woman to laugh.
"Relax, young man. I've heard about you and her friends. I'm relieved to know that there are people looking after her. As a mother, I worry about her." Elizabeth said.
"Elizabeth, I keep her out of trouble when I can," said Annette, who had just arrived.
"you two have been inseparable since you met, like Hinata and you are like sisters," Elizabeth said, causing them both to look at each other in shock.
"Sorry, I'm doing it again. Old habits die hard. Seeing you reminds me of old friends. How's your mother been, Annette?" asked Elizabeth.
"Mom is doing fine. She misses Dad and wishes he was home. Other than that, she's doing well," said Annette.
Before any more can be said, Sasuke approached the group. He looked really nervous, which was not unnoticed by everyone.
"'I've heard you were released,'" Sasuke was barely able to get the words out.
"Go, I've taken up enough of your time. I'll see you later. I don't plan on leaving the monastery for a while anyway. I've got business I've got to take care of here. See you around." Said Elizabeth. Sasuke took her by the hand and they both left. Everyone she felt her heart beating. She had to take a deep breath. No, she wouldn't think about a marriage proposal. Not now. It was too soon. She would enjoy the moments that she currently has with her boyfriend in the present.
After Mercedes and Sasuke left, Naruto couldn't help but smile. He didn't need to hear it from Sasuke's mouth that he had confessed the night before; it was written all over his face.
"At this rate, he's going to be marrying his mate before you marry yours," Kurama said, chuckling at how Naruto was losing in that department.
"Elizabeth, I didn't think I would be seeing you here," said Ingrid, surprised.
"'Well, I heard my daughter was in the infirmary, and I came here as fast as I could. I also wanted to know about the mysterious man she was talking about. I've been hearing rumors at my house about her seeing someone. I needed to find out for myself,' the woman said, referring to Sasuke."
"'He treats her well. I could vouch for him,' " said Naruto, remembering how Sasuke used to blush like crazy whenever he came to her prior to them talking.
"'I can confirm it as well. He treats her well. In fact, there are times where he forgets there is an audience when he is romantic with her,' " said Annette dreamingly.
"Mercedes told me how romantic he is with her and how he gives her nicknames like Angel. I find it strange that someone so serious like him would take an interest in my daughter. But then again, you're involved with three people, so I don't know if..." The woman didn't get a chance to finish when Ingrid covered her face to hide her blush. Naruto was completely oblivious to the reason, which caused Kurama to cringe at Naruto's ignorance.
"I hope for their sake you treat them well, Naruto. I would not be happy if my friend's daughter wasn't treated well." Elizabeth said with a serious expression.
"I would never treat my Hime like that. I would die first, well after my girlfriends kill me."Naruto said, scratching the back of his head, which caused Annette to laugh at the mental image along with Ingrid.
Naruto heard two additional footsteps and saw it was Dimitri and Hinata.
"Naruto, do you think you could come with me and Annette? The Blue Lions could use your help for something," Dimitri said, giving a hint to Annette and Hinata about his intentions.
"Well, I'll see you later, Elizabeth. I'm needed for something," Naruto said as he left Ingrid and Hinata alone.
"Wonder what they're up to," Ingrid said out loud.
Dorothea approached the group, which caused Elizabeth to look at her with interest.
"Naruto is involved with the children of people I was once friends with. I don't know if it's fate or coincidence, or perhaps a bit of both," Elizabeth said. Dorothea, who had just joined the conversation, was confused.
"Sorry, I'm getting ahead of myself. I'll leave you three young ladies to yourselves. I have a friend I need to visit." the woman said as she left the three girls alone.
A minute later, Dorothea spoke her mind.
"Wow, it's hard to believe she's in her 40s. She looks at least 10 years younger," Dorothea commented.
"Those born with Crest tend to age slower," said Ingrid.
"I heard about that. Is there any reason though why that is?" Hinata asked, curious, as the three women walked towards Naruto's quarters.
"Dorothea said, "I don't know. There are many things we do not know about crests. There are those who believe they are divine gifts from the goddess herself, and there are those who don't believe it is a divine gift."
"I don't know if I would want to be born with a Crest considering the kind of pain it has caused Mercie Chan." Hinata said.
"Yeah, but up until now, having a Crest is what guaranteed someone a high position in society. Without it, it's a lot more difficult, not outright impossible. Even a commoner who possesses a Crest has a much higher chance of advancement, even if they are people of abysmal skills, than someone with far more talent because crests are considered sacred in this screwed-up world," Dorothea said, not hiding her contempt for the Crest system.
"Do you know how you have a crust?" Hinata asked.
You're tested when you're born if you possess the Crest or not. But depending on the crest, it's possible to find out if the child will possess one before they're born. I don't know how it works. The kind of Crest mine is, my father didn't know I had one until after I was born. Ingrid said, not liking talking about the subject. When she thinks about it, she wishes she wasn't born with one.
"Let's drop this subject. I got an idea for something great tonight," said Dorothea, sensing her discomfort.
"Are you talking about another sexy surprise for our boyfriend?" asked Hinata.
"Actually, I was considering something different, but now that you mention it, I wouldn't mind doing that. How would you like to be dominated this time, my princess?" asked Dorothea near Hinata's left ear, causing her to shiver.
"Even if I wanted to, I don't know if I can resist now," Hinata said, trying to resist her girlfriend's advances.
"Let's have a little fun while Naru Kun is with the Blue Lions," Ingrid said with a smile as she and Dorothea wrapped their arms around Hinata's as they headed to Naruto's quarters. She was both excited and nervous; she rarely gets a chance to be the dominant one in bed with Hinata or Ingrid, and it was exciting in a way, especially to do it with both of them at the same time.
She was going to have a lot of fun tonight with her partners.
Naruto listened to Sasuke's classmates on how they wanted to give him a birthday surprise. He listened to everyone's suggestions on how they could make Sasuke's birthday an event to show their appreciation for their friend. Naruto couldn't help but see how much the Blue Lions cared about Sasuke. They truly did see him as one of them. He doesn't think he would have fit in any other house. Though Naruto couldn't picture himself in any house but the Golden Deer, he likes the people in the Blue Lions. They were nice to everybody that treated them with respect and they were not judgmental to anyone. Naruto could easily see Hinata fitting in here if circumstances had been different. Had she not had an asshole father, he could have easily seen Hinata choosing this class.
"Is there anything wrong with what you guys have planned for Sasuke? But why do you need me?" Naruto asked the nearest person, Annette.
"Because you're his friend, while we're making the final preparations for his birthday, you could do whatever you normally do with them back home, whether it's sparring or whatever. It'd be a good distraction. There are other things I would like to do, though. One thing I know only Mercie could do, and I know Sasuke would appreciate it if she did it. Making his favorite food, which we have been working on in secret," Annette said, shocking everyone. Naruto wondered how they knew about Sasuke's favorite food, but then again, it was probably Mercedes who found out with their long conversations they had before and after they got together as a couple.
"Of course I'll do whatever it takes for my friend," Naruto said, telling Sasuke's classmates that he was in.
"Excellent! We will have to make the preparations. Thank you for your time, Naruto. You've been very helpful with your insight," said Dimitri.
"Of course, I would do anything for a friend. Me and Sasuke go way back," Naruto said.
"'How long have you two known each other anyway if you don't mind me asking?'" asked Felix.
"Sasuke was my rival for most of my life. We didn't actually become friends until we were 12," Naruto admitted.
"Assumed you were friends since you were at least seven," Dimitri said, shocked that Naruto wasn't friends with Sasuke for more than five years.
"Sasuke and my relationship is complicated. He's the closest thing I can think of to having a brother, and well, he can be a pain in the ass sometimes, but I wouldn't trade him for anything," Naruto said, thinking of all the memories he has with Sasuke, good and bad, all the fights they got into, all the trouble they got themselves involved with, every single win and loss that Naruto had against Sasuke.
"After we're done with this meeting, I'll make sure to contact Mercie so she knows what our plans are," Annette said, eager to tell her best friend about their plan to surprise Sasuke.
"Maybe you should wait until morning because, after all, those two can't seem to keep their…" Sylvain was interrupted as he was elbowed by Annette.
"Come on, I'm saying what we're all thinking. Do you think they had us all fooled into believing they didn't do what everyone suspected?" He was elbowed again, this time by Felix.
"Sometimes, you don't know when to shut up," said Annette.
"Sylvain said, faking hurt, "You're no fun."
"See you all later. I need to get some sleep so I don't drop dead tomorrow from lack of sleep," Naruto joked. Everyone left, knowing what he meant. Classes were getting more difficult, long, and tedious. They were getting close to August, and soon they would have a break, which would be relieving for Naruto, at least for two weeks without worrying about school work.
He headed to his quarters and when he opened the door, he was speechless at the scene in front of him.
"Oh dear, looks like we didn't pay attention to the time. Sorry, dear, we got started without you," said Dorothea, pulling Naruto away and locking the door.
Naruto felt Ingrid and Hinata's hands on his chest.
" You know we should change things up, Naruto-kun? How would you feel about being dominated by your girlfriend's?" Hinata asked in a low, sexy whisper. Naruto felt his member harden instantly.
"Tomorrow, we have class, we could." Naruto said silently as his girlfriend's started to strip him of his clothing. He didn't fight it nor did he care to.
"what of it?" asked Ingrid.
"It's useless to resist," Dorothea said as she whispered in his ear.
He was expecting to hear his Fox companion make a comment, but he said nothing. Much to Naruto's relief, Naruto and his girlfriends made love for hours until they all collapsed from exhaustion. They were satisfied, especially Naruto, who didn't mind doing something different. He closed his eyes with his girlfriend's beside him and fell into a peaceful sleep.
Rodrigue, after many days of travel, had finally made it to Garreg Mach. It was early in the morning, and the sun had barely risen. It had been many days since he held counsel with the few people who knew the secret about the Lost Princess. It made him nervous in a way that she was in this very place and had no idea about her true identity. She had no idea that she was a lost princess hiding in plain sight. He made it as painstakingly as possible to not draw any attention to the girl's true heritage or who Dimitri's mother was. His twin sister was in the monastery, and he did not know it, nor did she. He went towards the gate, and the gatekeeper stopped him.
He showed his permit, which was given to him by the council, and was let through. It had been many years since he had walked these halls. The last time was when Glenn was a student of the Blue Lions. It was difficult for him to walk in this place, with so many memories of dead friends and a son who is no longer of this world.
He took glimpses at the students who were currently attending. They were children of people he had once gone to school with. He saw a blonde-haired boy around 17 years of age. He was with three women. One of them was a brown-haired woman with green eyes. She had a striking resemblance to Natalie. The second was a blonde-haired woman he knew too well. She was older than the last time he saw her, but he recognized her face. She looked happy. She was leaning towards a girl with long blue hair and lavender eyes, and he froze.
No matter how many years have passed, he had remembered her face. She was a spitting image of her mother. She was smiling and laughing with her companions and the boy.
"Didn't think I had it in me to do such a thing. I think you've been a bad influence on me, Dorothea Chan," said Hinata with a soft tone. The same as her mother's, her mannerisms, the way she spoke, the way she carried herself, she reminded him of the woman that he had once seen as a little sister.
"Well, it was exciting. I wonder what ideas you'll come up with next," Naruto replied.
Dorothea punched him lightly on the side.
"'Well, we all have to show you we love you somehow,' " said Ingrid, kissing Naruto on the cheek.
They walked further and further away, so it was more difficult for him to pick up what they were saying. Those were Hinata's partners.
What he was doing was not unnoticed by Elizabeth. He hadn't seen her in almost a year. She was one of his friends in the academy in their younger years. Was she watching the whole scene?
"Rodrigue, I was wondering when you would finally come. I knew you couldn't miss seeing Hitomi's daughter for anything," the woman said, looking in Hinata's direction.
""She looks just like her. She even has a lot of her traits from her mother, but I see some from her father too," Elizabeth said, looking at Rodrigue as if he knew something she didn't."
She's the spitting image of her. It's such a shame they didn't get to see the beautiful woman that she has become. Rodrigue said, thinking of friends long gone.
"Though you may have fooled the others, you haven't fooled me. I know about the Lost Princess," said Elizabeth, which caused Rodrigue to become extremely nervous. He couldn't have her secret out yet, not until she knows who she is.
"Please keep what you know to yourself for their own safety. There are those who are looking to destroy Lambert's legacy by whatever means necessary." Rodrigue said seriously. He would kill to protect Dimitri and his twin sister; that's how serious he is about protecting them both.
"'I would never endanger my best friend's child. You know this better than anyone,' Elizabeth said defensively, feeling hurt that he would have so little faith that she could keep a secret."
"I keep forgetting how close you two were,"Rodrigue admitted.
"That damn clan of hers, there's so much she doesn't know about her mother. Damn those people," she said, uncharacteristic of her.
"Does she at least have friends to look after her?" Rodrigue asked.
"Most people in the house like her. If it weren't for the clan, she would have chosen the Blue Lions house, just like her mother. I worry about her, even though I barely speak to her. She has a lot of anger and rage, a lot like her father." She said, remembering what Hinata's father was like at the academy.
"Well, as far as I recall, her brother has that as well." Rodrigue said.
"They both inherited aspects of their parents. It's a shame they don't know how much their parents loved them," said Elizabeth, thinking about Lambert and Hitomi.
"Had it not been for that bastard in Konoha and Rufus, she would have made a great Queen," Rodrigue said contemptuously.
"Elizabeth took up enough of Rodrigue's time. If he wished to know where Gustave was, Gustave was currently in the cathedral," Elizabeth said as she left him alone. He would have to go to him immediately and ask for any information he could about the twins. He needed to be as up-to-date as possible before he met the Lost Princess.
Sonia was with Yuri and her friends from the Ashen Wolves as much as she would like to be with her new friends in the Blue Lions. She wanted to pay a visit to a woman who had taken residence in Abyss 5 years ago. Her origin was unknown; she never showed her face in the open. She always wore a hood. She was nice and treated everyone with kindness and respect. She was considered an angel. Her origin was unknown; she had an accent from a foreign land. She always went to her for advice whenever she ever needed help on anything. Of course, she liked her cooking. She was a great cook and a great listener as well.
As her friends sat at the tavern, the woman approached them. She wore a long brown cloak that covered her from head to toe. The only thing that was exposed was her mouth, but nothing else. She didn't expose any other part of her body. Her eyes were covered, making it difficult to tell her age. From what Sonia could gather, she was someone who could range from her late 30s to mid-40s. It was difficult to know because of her reluctance to show her face to anyone.
"Will it be the usual for you, 4?" asked a soft voice.
"Hito, you know how to read our minds. Yes, I would like the usual, thank you," said Yuri gratefully.
"Your cooking is the best. I don't think I've had a meal that I haven't eaten." Said Constance.
"Agreed," said Hapi, happy to be underground for the time being.
Hito got to work while she was cooking, but Sonia noticed Balthus had a grin on his face, which really annoyed her.
"Hey, how's Prince Charming treating you?" asked Balthus with a mischievous smile. He knew that would rile her up. She turned away, not wanting her friends to notice her blushing face.
"Every time Dimitri is mentioned, you blush like mad. Just admit you have a crush on him and be done with it," Hapi said, annoyed at Sonia. Every time Dimitri is brought up, she acts like the complete opposite of how she presents herself to her friends.
She heard Yuri laughing along with Balthus, which caused her to bury her face in her hands.
"She's going to die of embarrassment at the Ratethings are going.'" Hapi said, Joining in on the teasing.
"Please stop," Sonia said, turning even redder.
"We've never seen you act this way before doesn't mean there's anything wrong with it. I mean, your brother is involved with Marianne and Hilda, and I see nothing wrong with you having an interest in Dimitri," said Yuri, not understanding why she didn't want to indulge in those thoughts.
"Studying romance is not on my agenda," Sonia said, shutting down the discussion.
"Always the stubborn one. You remind me of myself at your age," said Hito warmly as she delivered their food to the table.
"Speaking from experience?" asked Constance.
"Once, I was just like Sonia. Romance was not on my agenda in these very Halls 25 years ago. The only thing on my mind was trying to meet the expectations of others, until I met someone." The woman paused.
"if it's something personal, Miss, you don't have to divulge," Sonia said, which caused the woman to shake her head.
"Everything's alright. It's just been a long time since I thought about those days, the days when I met the man I hold dear to my heart. I didn't think I'd ever fall in love, but I did. Sonia, don't disregard the possibility. Just enjoy life and all its wonders. Don't take it for granted." Hito said with wisdom and a deep sadness in her voice.
"Sorry," Sonia said. The woman replied.
"Sonia, you have nothing to apologize for. You did nothing wrong. I hope you enjoy what I've made. I'm sorry, but I need some time to myself," the woman said as she hastily left the tavern. She couldn't help but pick up a teardrop from her face.
"Poor woman," Constance said, feeling sad.
"what happened to her?"asked Sonia.
"Her origins are unknown to me, but what I've managed to learn is that she comes from a faraway land where she had lost everything. She's the mother of three children, two of whom she has not seen in many years, and she witnessed the death of the love of her life." Yuri said.
"I feel bad for her," Balthus said, "looking at the woman's direction."
"Let's not let that ruin our day, let's not waste her efforts," said Yuri as he ate the food that she had left them. It was nothing spectacular; it was just mashed potatoes and gravy. It was soft but not too soft, just the way Sonia liked it. She also made vegetable soup on the side. Being a believer in not wasting anything, she consumed every ounce of the food that Hito made for them. But she couldn't help but think of Hito, the woman with sadness in her voice and the way she walked. Just what had happened to her? She wanted to know. Considering she had lived in the abyss for the better part of 5 years, barely anything was known about her other than her name.
She couldn't help but feel like she was connected somehow to something, but then decided to drop it. It was probably nothing. Her main focus right now was to eat the food that was in front of her. She would investigate the mysteries of the woman later.
Dimitri and Hinata were walking in silence. Hinata was wondering why Dimitri wanted her to go with him alone. Dimitri approached her a few days ago and asked her to come with him to the Hall of Heroes. She had no idea why she was even going with Dimitri. She asked why Edelgard couldn't go with her. He simply said it had to do with something personal regarding Hinata and Dimitri.
"Dimitri, we're going to the Hall of Heroes, but why? What reason do we have to go there?" Hinata asked her friend.
"Because I wanted to take you here since the first day you came here, I would have had you join the Blue Lions class, but that never happened. I wanted to show you that you were much more than you thought you were. I wanted to help give you a confidence boost. I got cold feet when you joined the Black Eagles. I felt like I was inadequate and couldn't help you even more so when Byleth Eisner became your professor. But with the recent events with Sonia joining my house, I wanted to have an opportunity to once again show you one of our greatest heroes so you can once again see what's in your blood." Dimitri answered. They were almost there. She looked at all the statues. So many people. She could look at this place for hours. A thousand years of history was in this very place that she was walking in.
Hinata couldn't believe what she was looking at. This statue was recently erected, but it had to have been built at least 7 years ago. She recognized the woman's face. The way she carried herself in the statue, she had confidence. There were twin lions engulfing her fists, which were raised in defiance. Her hair was down to her back, and she had an elegant appearance. Her face was kind but fierce. This was her mother, the way she looked in her early twenties.
She was the spitting image of what her mother was before she was brutally murdered. She had almost forgotten what her mother looked like. Then she saw something that she thought was strange.
"Here lies my beloved Hitomi for in another life you could have been my queen."
Lambert Egitte Blaiddyd
This caused Dimitri to be surprised as well, looking at his father talking about her mother in that way.
"Did you not know about this, Dimitri?" asked Hinata, surprised. He looked at the statue as if he was seeing it for the first time. He had memories of her mother, but nowhere near to the extent that Hinata did.
"No, I didn't. I knew there was a statue of Lady Hitomi, but I never knew about my father. I mean, I've heard the rumors, but I didn't think…" Dimitri couldn't finish. Hinata didn't need to hear anymore. Hinata could never have imagined Lambert could have been her mother's lover. It should have been obvious why her mother didn't tell her. So many questions, questions that died with her.
" It's been many years have passed since I last saw this statue. It doesn't compare to the real thing, but I suppose that's the closest any of us will get to seeing Hitomi in the flesh. I almost forgot it's been so long since she passed," said a man with sadness. Hinata looked and saw it was a man in his early 40s.
"Rodrigue, I didn't expect to see you here," said Dimitri, happy and surprised to see the blue-haired man. He had a mustache and a beard. Hinata couldn't help but notice his resemblance to Felix, one of Dimitri's classmates. He looked like an older version of him; he's likely his father.
"Thinking you two and we are visiting her grave," the man said, which surprised Hinata. She was completely confused. What did this man mean by that?
"Mother's grave? I don't understand," Hinata said, perplexed. Her body was never found. The last image she remembers was her mother dying because someone used the bird cage seal, but Hinata was never able to prove it. She was buried in the very place she hated.
"Your mother loved this place when I first met her. She was sad and lacked confidence. It was Lambert who brought out the strong woman we all know her as," he said, looking at Hinata. This clicked immediately, and she looked at her mother. This is why Dimitri wanted to bring her here. Then, she realized how much she was like her mother.
"Up until now, I've been rude. I'm sorry. I've been thinking about old friends who are long gone. You two remind me of them. I'm sorry I haven't properly introduced myself. I am Rodrigue Achille Fraldarius. I'm sure Dimitri has told you about me," the man said with the smile that Hinata remembered Dimitri telling her about when her childhood friends were at the Hyuga clan compound 7 years ago. It feels like a different lifetime when she thinks about it.
"Sorry, you're nothing like I imagined. Rodrigue San, forgive me for my rudeness," Hinata said apologetically. He dismissed it with a wave of his hand.
"Nonsense, Hinata. I'm glad to have finally met you. Dimitri has sent me many letters about you. I was so eager to meet you that I forgot to bring you something your mother wanted me to give you," Rodrigue said with a smile she could tell he hadn't had in a long time.
"Rodrigue, I have a question. What does this quote by my father mean? Who was this woman to him?" Dimitri asked.
"Hitomi was someone dear to your father. He was heartbroken when she was forced to marry another man." This caused Hinata and Dimitri to be taken aback.
"Do you mean my mother was?" Hinata did not know how to ask the question. Something was starting to click. Could this be the reason why her mother was always sad on March 23rd every year? Could there be a connection?
It's a long and complicated story. Hinata Lambert was a complicated man, and many overlook some of the things he may have done that were less savory. He married three women in his life, but only one of them truly captured his heart. The people of Faerghus loved her; she was called the queen that was never crowned. She was kind and compassionate, and she listened patiently to the grievances of the people. She was a foreigner yet she did everything she could. There have been statues erected in her honor. Even those in Duscur loved her. When she died, and news of her death spread, there was mourning. Some called her an angel in human form, and some called her the goddess in human flesh. These may be exaggerations, but your mother was an important person to our king. Rodrigue continued to look at the statue.
"Did you love her?" asked Dimitri Rodrigue, which was something Hinata was curious about as well.
As a brother would love a little sister, yes, I was one of the people who encouraged her to join the Blue Lions when her clan pressured her to join the Black Eagles. She defied her family and chose her own path, something that you have inherited from her as well. The man smiled warmly at her.
"Mother never talked about her time here," Hinata said, remembering her mother. Every time she got sad on March 23rd, she didn't understand the significance of that day, but she always was sad no matter what occurred that day. She'd always wanted to be left alone.
"Of course her clan pressured her never to discuss anything about this land, a shame. There's a lot you could have learned from her. I could tell you Hinata she was a great friend. She was a great listener in fact some of your friends would not be here if it weren't for her." Rodrigue said. This surprised Hinata how much of an impact on people's lives did her mother have? She remembered Elizabeth mercedes's mother talked positively of Hinata's mother how much more does she not know thanks to her clan not letting her mother speak about her mother's time at the monastery.
"Perhaps a story for a different time. It was a pleasure to finally meet you. I hope we get to talk more, my dear, and please look after Dimitri for me. It would bring me relief knowing that you would keep an eye on him." Rodrigue said as he left Dimitri and Hinata alone.
There's so much I don't know about my mother. What more could I have learned had my father not been such a bastard and allowed her to share with me her experiences? Here, I never knew my mother was such good friends with Rodrigue San, or that your father and my mother were lovers, Dimitri. I don't. Hinata wasn't able to say more because Dimitri understood her confusion as well as she did.
"Her behavior at the compound all those years ago makes sense now. She treated me like I was her son. It all fits." Dimitri thought about her treatment of him compared to how her father treated him.
There was a lot that died with her mother, but then again, there was a lot that died with Lambert. How much do they know? How much did Hinata not know thanks to her father?
"Let's go to the cafeteria, lunch is almost here," said Dimitri reluctantly. Hinata took one last look at the statue of her mother and the words of Lambert, then left.
Rodrigue looked at Dimitri and Hinata as they left. She was exactly as described. It was hard; he was tempted to let her know of her true origin, but it was too soon. She would piece it together sooner now that she saw the quote. How would he be able to prevent her from fighting out too soon? He couldn't necessarily lie now; he had to do something. As he was walking, he noticed his son and a raven-haired man training. His son was struggling, and the sparring session he saw the Uchiha putting pressure in their sparring match.
He watched with interest and made sure not to draw attention as he watched his son and Sasuke engage in their duel. Sasuke had the clear advantage as he went to strike at his son's right side. Sasuke was so fast that Felix was not able to move out of the way fast enough and was hit hard.
He resisted the urge to cry out in pain as he dropped the practice sword, and Sasuke was declared the victor.
"Damn you've gotten stronger since Catherine taught you." Said Felix admiring Sasuke's skills.
"Don't sell yourself short, Felix. I had to go all out. I could have easily lost if I was even a second slower. You've gotten a lot stronger yourself," Sasuke said as he handed his son a bottle of water.
He took a sip and handed Sasuke his own bottle.
"Training with Dimitri will definitely make you stronger too," Felix said.
"Sparring with Dimitri is hard when he's distracted by thoughts about Sonia. I swear, ever since she entered the picture, he acts like a lovesick schoolboy. It's quite embarrassing," said Felix.
"Didn't you say the same about me at one point regarding Mercie ?"Sasuke asked.
"Mercedes and you are different at the very least you didn't lose your touch like Dimitri did." Felix replied.
"I swear, with you, it's like a contest to see who's the most embarrassing romantic.'"Sylvan joked.
"At least we have a girlfriend."Sasuke and Felix said.
"Yeah, yeah, whatever. It's not like it's the end of the world," Sylvain said, annoyed.
"Yeah, you're saying that as you're eyeing Shion," said Sasuke, which caused him to be silent.
Rodrigue looked at the three men bantering and being friendly with each other. It reminds him of himself with Matthias and Gunnar. When he sees those three young men in front of him, they remind him of a younger version of his friends.
He doesn't have the best relationship with his younger son, so he decided to leave before he was noticed. He is happy to know Felix has friends that are looking after him, and Sylvain, the friend he has known for years, Sasuke, he would like to meet in private whenever the chance presented itself. He had other things to do in the monastery and wasn't going to leave yet. He still had things to do and people he wanted to speak to. He would like to meet Naruto Uzumaki to know if he was a good fit for Gunnar's daughter and Hinata. He headed to the archbishop's quarters where he would initiate the next step and ensure the Lost Princess's identity was protected until the time came.
She looked at the statue. It was hard to believe she had once looked like the woman in a different lifetime. That's who she was. She took off her hood. Her hair was down to her shoulders. It was a dark blue. Her eyes were lavender. She was a woman at the age of 43, though she looked 10 to 15 years younger. To her, it didn't matter. She had lost everything.
She rubbed her hands over the letters that were written, no matter how many times she had read them, it didn't hurt any less.
"I'm so sorry I couldn't."the woman fell to her knees no matter how many years had passed the pain of his death did not go away.
"Chinatsu and Rufus send their regards," said Hiashi as he stabbed Lambert repeatedly until he died. She watched in horror as he fell face down.
"Konaha took everything from me: time with my children, my future my lion ." She couldn't stop crying. Nobody knew her true identity, nor did it matter. The woman that she was died the day Lambert did. She was just a regular woman, a nobody, a failure of a mother and a wife. She couldn't even summon the courage to see her twin children. That's how much of a wretch she saw herself as. Her younger self would look at her with disgust, but that woman was long gone.
The main motivator that had kept her going was her youngest son, whom nobody knew existed, and the chance for revenge against the people responsible for her husband's murder and the future that was stolen from her and her family. Here she was, living in the shadows, in an abyss, hiding in plain sight, just like her sunflower.
She visited this place every chance she could get, not to see her statue, but the words of the man who had given her everything she had wanted: home and a family. Only for it to be taken away. Her children think she's dead. One of them doesn't even know she is his mother. Time and everything else that mattered was taken. The one thing she could still do, the one thing she still had, was her revenge. She looked at the short sword she was holding. A gift from her husband. She took it out and looked at the blade; it was sharp. She would put this blade in Hiashi's black heart. Her vengeance wouldn't be denied, but first, she'll start with Lambert's brother, Rufus. When the opportunity arises, he will be the first of many in her act of retribution for the people that had destroyed her family.
The scene where Hinata and Dimitri go to where Hitomi's statue is and where they meet Rodrigue was a scene that I had written 6 months prior to this chapter's publication. When I was struggling with the previous arc, I wanted to see what new scenes that I wanted to eventually put into the story. I didn't make that many changes to the final cut of that scene except add some more details here and there. Have you been paying attention? I've had a lot of hints about who the lost princess is. It's obvious if you've been paying attention. Though, if you've already figured it out, don't spoil it for those who have yet to get to that point. If you're reading this after I eventually reveal it.
The next chapter will be a Sasuke and Mercedes-centric chapter. It will be a sequel to "Make My Angel Smile." The next chapter will have parallels with it. Some may be annoyed that I made some changes to Sasuke's birthday in the next chapter, but that's mainly because there have been too many chapters in this story that have taken place in the same month. So, the next chapter will take place in August.
Anyway, any feedback would be appreciated. Even though this story may not get the attention that some of my other stories get, I do appreciate those who give me feedback on this story regardless. I've put a lot of time into this story. Almost 2 years, in fact.
See you next chapter.
