Episode 11: Assassin
Jump City, Logan Residence: Evening. Paine is in her room, sitting at her computer, making a video-call with Balduin.
Balduin:
Hello?
Paine:
Hey, Balduin.
Balduin:
Paine! I'm so happy to see you.
Paine:
Yeah, me too. Sorry I couldn't get in contact with you sooner, but we've been pretty busy since you and your father visited Gotham.
Balduin:
Yeah, things turned ugly since Vertigo was arrested. My father and Queen Perdita had been working overtime to quell the unrest. And I haven't been as involved with the Titans as I'd like to be. On the plus side, though, Vertigo won't be causing us anymore problems from here on out. So maybe, if things get slow around here, I can pay you guys a visit and help out with whatever situation you guys are having.
Paine:
Murdoc has had a few run-ins with our uncles and Jaden's grandfather passed on. Other than that, it's been pretty slow in Jump.
Balduin:
Eh, maybe I'll come by anyway and we can just hang out.
Paine:
Sounds like a plan.
Balduin:
My father will be giving an address at the United Nations about metahuman rights if you want to come and watch with me?
Paine:
(Teasingly) Are you asking me out on a date?
Balduin:
If that's what you want to call it.
Paine giggles cutely.
Paine:
Alright, I'll be there. And we can plan out your visit while I'm there.
Balduin:
Excellent. The address will happen two days from now.
Paine:
Great! See you then!
They touch fingers via the screens before the calls disconnect. When Paine opens the door, she finds Lilith there waiting for her.
Lilith:
Hey, Paine.
Paine:
(Startled) Oh, Lilith, hey. What are you-
Lilith:
I had my ear against the door and heard the whole conversation. You have a date with Balduin Markov!
Paine:
(Red-faced) It's just an outing.
Lilith:
I heard you use the word 'date'.
Paine:
That was for the date of the outing.
Lilith:
Where are you two even going anyway?
Paine:
His father is going to be giving an address on metahuman rights at the United Nations two days from now and I told him I'd be there.
Lilith:
Doesn't sound like much of a date. Unless you two have something planned for afterwards? Stuff in Markovia, perhaps. If that's the case, make sure you bring me back something nice.
Paine:
(Ruffles her younger sister's hair) Will do, Lil.
Markov Residence, Jamaica; meanwhile. Terra was chatting with her brother, who had stopped in.
Terra:
It's so nice of you to drop by, Brion.
Brion:
I figured that Balduin and I would stop by on the way to the United Nations to see how you were doing.
Terra and Brion look outside to see Balduin and Alloroc talking by the shore.
Brion:
And besides, I figured it'd be nice if Balduin got to spend some time with his cousin.
Terra:
Things have been fine here. You know if things ever get bad in Markovia, we can put you two up somewhere around here.
Brion:
I appreciate the gesture, Tara, but I can't abandon my country.
Terra:
I just worry about you sometimes. We got lucky stopping Count Vertigo that one time. Next time we might not be so lucky. I don't want to lose you again.
Brion:
You know I can defend myself, and besides, I have my escort. And Balduin's powers are coming along nicely. After he so easily took care of Vertigo, I'm confident that Balduin can handle himself on the battlefield.
Terra:
You sure do have a lot of faith in your son.
Brion:
Why wouldn't I? He has a great father for a teacher.
Terra:
I can see why you became king.
Brion:
(Looks out at Balduin, who was on the beach, helping Alloroc and Garth move a stranded dolphin back into the water.) And my boy will make a great successor when the time comes. Strong, kind, and wise. All the things a great leader should be.
On the beach outside the house; Balduin and Alloroc have dug a trench in the sand and Garth manipulated the water to keep the dolphin wet and to allow it to slide back out to sea.
Garth:
Go on home to your family, little guy.
The dolphin whistles in response and swims away.
Garth:
Now, how about we get ourselves something to eat?
Alloroc:
Alright, now we're talking!
Balduin:
I've never been to the market.
Alloroc:
Really?
Balduin:
As prince of Markovia, food is directly on the table.
Alloroc:
Then you will discover the real world, cousin.
Garth:
It's really quite nice. All of the produce is freshly grown and picked for our pleasure.
They go inside the house.
Garth:
We're taking Balduin with us to the market, babe. You guys want anything while we're out?
Terra:
Maybe some drinks.
Alloroc:
Anything you might want, Uncle Brion?
Brion:
Surprise me. I'm not picky.
Later, at the market; Garth and Alloroc were at a fruit stand while Balduin was distracted by a steel drum band. Balduin smiles and drops a Euro in a basket in front of the drummer.
Balduin:
One piece of Markovian currency is about the same as 174 Jamaican dollars. Don't spend it all in one place.
Alloroc:
Balduin, why don't you come look at the produce and souvenirs?
Balduin:
I don't know when I'll be back here. I want to make sure I take in every little bit of this place. Memories last longer than any souvenir.
Alloroc:
You could get something for Paine.
Garth:
They sell some rather nice seashell necklaces at that booth over there.
Balduin's face turns red.
Balduin:
And you could get one for Dawn.
Alloroc's face turns just as red as Balduin's. Even worse for him, Garth overheard this.
Garth:
Do I hear that right? You have a crush on somebody, Alloroc?
Alloroc:
I might have a little something for Dawn Allen.
Balduin:
It's not a secret at this point.
Garth:
Is that why I hear strange noises from your bedroom in the middle of the night?
Alloroc:
(Embarrassed) I told you I was doing some stretches, dad!
Balduin:
Were you doing those 'stretches' last night? Because, I don't know about you, but I don't mewl out a series of f-bombs when I stretch.
Alloroc:
That's from overexertion.
Garth:
Regardless, I'm happy for you son.
Alloroc:
Thanks, dad.
Garth stays at the fruit stall while Alloroc and Balduin head on over to the jewellery stall.
Balduin:
I hope they have a green and black shell necklace. Those are Paine's favourite colours. What type of necklace do you think you'll get for Dawn?
Alloroc:
Red and blue, like the Tornado Twins she and Don make up.
The two young men approach the jewellery stand where there are plenty of colourful stones and seashell necklaces and bracelets, all handcrafted, for them to choose from.
Balduin:
Found them. They're quite cheap.
Alloroc:
No need to flaunt your wealth in broad daylight. Are you trying to get robbed or something?
Balduin:
No and anyway, they have no chance of succeeding.
Alloroc:
Never mind, I found one too.
They pick them up. The stall owner notices their excitement.
Owner:
So you boys really like those necklaces, eh? Must have some lucky ladies in your lives that you're looking to spoil.
Alloroc:
You know it, Rocky.
Balduin:
You know him?
Alloroc:
It's a small town, Balduin. Everyone pretty much knows everyone around here.
Balduin:
I struggle to remember the names of every palace aide. But I digress. Since you know him, maybe we can get a good deal on these necklaces, right?
Rocky:
Of course. I've known little Alloroc since he was a tyke. And given that you're the son of the king of the great nation of Markovia, I think it would be in my best interest to stay on your good side should your nation decide to invade.
Balduin:
My father is trying to create a peaceful world. Resorting to violence is the absolute last thing he'd do, sir.
Rocky:
A very noble thing.
Alloroc reaches into his pocket and takes out some money.
Alloroc:
These should cover them.
Rocky:
Want me to convert your Euros into Jamaican dollars?
Balduin:
That wouldn't be a bad idea. Where's the nearest bank?
Rocky:
Right over there.
The three of them look at the bank to see three men putting on face masks and carrying guns.
Rocky:
Uh-oh!
Balduin:
Guess even the most peaceful of places has to have a small piece of evil lurking under the surface. You ready, Alloroc?
Alloroc:
You bet!
They walk towards the armed masked men; Alloroc takes out his Hydro-Blades. As they get closer, they hear the men talk amongst themselves.
Robber #1:
Alright, here's the plan. I'll rush in, fire off my gun in the air to scare them, and they'll be putty in my hands.
Alloroc:
Better idea. (The three men look to see Alloroc and Balduin glowering down at them) How about you three take of running now and we won't be forced to hurt you!
Robber #2:
Oh boo! I was hoping we could pull this job off without a casualty. Oh well!
The three robbers aim their guns at the two boys.
Balduin:
Look out!
Just when the three men started firing their guns, Balduin used the ground beneath him to create a shield to protect them from the bullets.
Robber #1:
What's with this guy?!
Balduin:
I'm a prince, and you're a criminal.
He juggles several smaller stones and throws them at the robbers, knocking the guns out of their hands.
Robber #3:
I think I know who you brats are. You're them Teen Titans we keep hearing about.
Alloroc:
Guess you're not as dumb as you seem.
He electrifies his hydro-blades.
Alloroc:
(Pointing the blades at the robbers) Now you three stay right where you are and don't move a muscle.
They throw down their guns while Alloroc still has his blades pointed. Citizens applaud for the two cousins as Balduin takes a bow.
Alloroc:
Enjoying your time in the limelight, cousin?
Balduin:
I'm no theatre buff, but there's something cathartic about the sound of the applause.
Alloroc:
Don't let it get to your head
Garth comes up to see his son and his nephew's work.
Garth:
Great job, boys.
Local police take the robbers away, and the trio leave the market, Balduin and Alloroc holding onto the necklaces.
Balduin:
I can't wait to see the look on Paine's face when she sees this. I know she'll love it!
Alloroc:
And I just know Dawn will go crazy over mine.
When they return to the house, they see Terra and Brion haven't moved.
Garth:
We're back!
Brion:
Wonderful! How was the market?
Alloroc:
Oh, you know, we did some shopping, brought some food and jewellery, stopped a robbery. Same stuff different day.
Brion:
Were they dangerous?
Balduin:
Hardly; oh, and I got something for Paine. And Al got something for Dawn.
Alloroc:
Please don't call me Al. It sounds weird.
Balduin:
My apologies. Anyway, I want to give Paine this when I see her at the United Nations.
Alloroc:
Hopefully Dawn isn't too busy. I'd like to give her my necklace now.
As Garth gets dinner organised, Alloroc activates the zeta tube and sets it for the Steel City Tower.
Alloroc:
I'll be back soon.
Garth:
We'll have a nice garden salad ready for you, son.
He disappears.
Vlatava; meanwhile. At the maximum security prison, Count Vertigo was in his cell, talking to someone outside.
Count Vertigo:
You know of King Brion and his upcoming address to the UN?
Blockbuster:
I know he's allied himself with Nightwing. And any friend of Nightwing is an enemy of mine.
Count Vertigo:
Because he mutated you and wiped out your little crew.
Blockbuster:
More important than that. Talon was my bird to crush, and he took that honour away from me!
Count Vertigo:
Well, help me eliminate King Brion and his uppity brat, and in return I'll help you take out Nightwing and those who are closest to him.
Blockbuster:
Shall we discuss my reward?
Count Vertigo:
After you'd done the task.
Blockbuster:
Fine.
Count Vertigo:
One more thing. Once you kill Brion and Balduin, I ask that you bring me proof.
Blockbuster:
As you wish, your majesty.
They hear the footsteps of prison guards.
Blockbuster:
I'll bring him their heads as trophies.
Blockbuster leaves.
Guard #1:
What's the matter Werner, talking to yourself again?
Count Vertigo:
Just thinking aloud about my plans once I leave this place.
Guard #2:
Good luck with that. After the stunt you pulled in Gotham, you'll be lucky if you get out of here by the next millennium.
Count Vertigo:
You should choose your words carefully. In fact, I think I might be out of here sooner than you think.
Guard #2:
(Scoffs) Sure.
Guard #1:
Come on, let's leave this looney. He's not worth our time.
They continue their patrol.
In Steel City, Alloroc arrives at the tower; he sees Jon and Lian locking lips.
Alloroc:
Hey, lovebirds, do you know where I can find Dawn?
Without stopping their make out session, Jon and Lian just point towards the kitchen, indicating that that's where Dawn is.
Alloroc:
Thanks. (Heads for the kitchen)
Dawn is fixing herself a large sandwich.
Dawn:
Bacon, egg, cheese, pesto, peppers, mustard, tomatoes, onion, and bread, with an olive on top. (She gazes in awe at her "masterpiece") Oh, I wish I can unhinge my jaw so I can eat this baby in one big bite!
Alloroc:
Where's the fun in that? Didn't your parents tell you to savour the flavour?
Dawn turns around to find Alloroc standing in the doorway.
Dawn:
Hey, Al!
Alloroc:
Why is everyone calling me 'Al' lately?
Dawn:
Not big on nicknames, got it. Anyway, what's up?
Alloroc:
(Blushes) Well, I was at the market earlier today in my hometown, and I just dropped by to give you something.
Dawn:
Something for me?
Alloroc:
Yeah, (His blush gets deeper) I-I hope you like it.
He hands Dawn a small box containing the necklace. Dawn opens it up, revealing the necklace inside, and this causes Dawn to blush.
Dawn:
Oh, Alloroc.
She seemed to forget about her sandwich.
Alloroc:
What do you think?
Dawn:
N-No one, other than my family, has ever given me a gift before. Especially one that looks quite as good as this.
Dawn tries the necklace on. Alloroc becomes a blushing mess.
Dawn:
What do you think?
Alloroc:
It really brings out the colour in your eyes.
Dawn's face turns red.
Dawn:
I'm glad you like it. But, there's a reason why you got this for me, isn't there?
Alloroc:
Yes there is...Dawn...will you-
Just then, Don rushes in.
Don:
Sis, what's taking so long with that sandwich?
Dawn:
Sorry Don. Got distracted.
Don:
That's a pretty nice looking necklace. Where'd you get it from.
Dawn:
Alloroc gave it to me.
Don:
Well, that's awfully nice of him. Now come on, I'm ready to eat. (Grabs the sandwich and heads elsewhere)
Dawn:
Hey, get back here! You'd better leave some for me! (Chases after Don) Bye, Alloroc, thanks for the necklace.
Alloroc:
Yeah...bye.
Dawn leaves and Alloroc sighs, his chance to tell Dawn he likes her ruined.
Alloroc:
That's the problem with the twins. They're never far from each other but I'll tell you my feelings, Dawn.
Koro:
(Entering the kitchen) Lost out on love again, Alloroc?
Alloroc turns around to see Koro standing at the doorway sipping on a soda.
Alloroc:
How long have you been standing there?
Koro:
Pardon my French, but long enough to see Don perform the ultimate cockblock.
Alloroc:
Could you do me a favour and ask him if I could talk to Dawn alone? Please?
Koro:
Not when they're eating. If I were you, I'd wait until she's done. But given how quickly they eat, you probably have a good five minutes to get ready.
Don and Dawn are heard letting out a loud belch from the other room.
Alloroc:
Maybe less.
Alloroc:
Quick question, how are things going between you and Lilith?
Koro:
She actually wants to see me at the park later today. She says she wants to talk about something. You think it's about Murdoc?
Alloroc:
That or she wants you. Listen, I should get home. Dinner's on the table.
Koro:
Alright, catch you later, Alloroc.
Alloroc leaves through the zeta tube as Koro leaves to prepare for his meeting with Lilith.
Markov Residence, Jamaica; later. Garth, Terra, Brion, Balduin and Tramm are eating dinner when Alloroc returns and takes his seat at the dining table next to Balduin.
Balduin:
Did you give it to her?
Alloroc:
Yeah.
Balduin:
And?
Alloroc:
She liked it... I think.
Balduin:
What happened?
Alloroc:
The usual. Her brother offered her something to eat and she completely forgot about me.
Balduin:
I'm sorry Alloroc. Next time you should be lucky.
Alloroc:
I'll have to wait to tell her when she's not hungry and when Don is nowhere to be found.
Garth:
It'll happen... eventually.
Alloroc:
(Looks over at Brion) So, Uncle Brion, I've gotta ask. Aren't you a little worried that someone might crash your U.N speech like Count Vertigo did at Wayne Manor?
Brion:
I have all the security necessary; I even contacted Bowhunter for extra insurance.
Garth:
Sounds like you're all set.
Brion:
I am. And besides, after everything Tara and I went through in our childhood, it takes a lot to put fear into me.
Terra:
Don't get a big-head just because you have powers.
Garth:
There's nothing wrong with feeling confident, darling.
Brion:
Garth, how did you do this? This is delicious.
Garth:
After this I can give you the recipe.
Alloroc and Balduin finish eating and wipe their mouths with napkins; Tramm takes their dishes into the kitchen. Alloroc goes outside.
Garth:
You're not going swimming after dinner, are you?
Alloroc:
No. Just getting some fresh air.
Later, he's on the beach, and he starts skimming stones across the surface. He sighs before sitting himself down on the water's edge to take in the sunset. Balduin sits down next to him, as a crab walks along Alloroc's hand.
Alloroc:
Any idea what you're going to say to Paine tomorrow?
Balduin:
I'm working on that.
Alloroc:
Well, hopefully it'll go better than my attempt at wooing Dawn... although, to give credit where credit was due, I imagined it going a lot worse in my head.
Balduin:
You've gotta have more confidence in yourself, cousin. You're better than you think you are.
Alloroc:
At combatting no-gooders, yes. At wooing a girl, no.
Balduin:
Come on, Alloroc. Dawn, or any girl for that matter, would be lucky to be your girlfriend. You always stand up for what's right, you're well behaved, and you love animals. Girls love guys who love animals.
Alloroc:
I suppose you're right.
Balduin:
And we already know Dawn is a big eater. The way to anybody's heart is through their stomach, so maybe your parents can give you some recipes and you can make Dawn a meal that'll knock her socks off... among other articles of clothing.
Alloroc:
Balduin!
Balduin:
I'm only teasing.
He elbows him. Alloroc places the crab back onto the sand and it scuttles off.
Alloroc:
Thanks for the pep talk, Balduin.
Balduin:
That's what good cousins are for.
Alloroc:
Crush isn't like that but on the other hand, she's an alien.
Balduin:
Who's Crush?
Alloroc:
The daughter of Lobo, an invincible alien. And she doesn't care about my feelings for animals.
Balduin:
At least she's not on your team.
Alloroc:
No, she's on Paine's team.
Balduin:
Oh.
Steel City Park: meanwhile. Koro sees Lilith sitting on a bench in front of the fountain, waiting for him. Koro walks up to the bench and sits next to Lilith
Koro:
What's going on, Lil?
Lilith:
Did Murdoc say anything to you or Mar'i about what happened between him, his uncles, and Kacey the other day?
Koro:
No. He doesn't usually keep secrets from me. What happened?
Lilith:
Apparently our uncles want to get to Murdoc by torturing Kacey. And if they're willing to harm Kacey, I'm beginning to think that they could do the same to us. I'm not going to lie, Koro, I'm scared.
Koro:
But your mom will protect you, won't she?
Lilith:
It is true she was able to scare off my uncles every time they appeared, but we can't rely on her forever.
To calm her fears, she hugs Koro tightly. Koro's face turns red.
Lilith:
I just wish I could close my eyes so all of this nonsense would go away.
Koro just puts her arm around her and rubs her back.
Koro:
We're going to fix this, Lilith. Evey last one of us.
Lilith:
You promise?
Koro:
I promise. I also promise that I won't let your uncles hurt you.
Lilith:
(Pulls her face out from his arm and looks at him) Thank you
Koro:
Hey, you know what cheers me up when I'm feeling low?
Lilith:
What?
Koro points over at an ice cream vendor. Understanding what Koro is trying to say makes Lilith smile as she wipes the last of her tears from her eyes. The two teens get up from their seat to go grab some frozen treats.
Koro:
Two chocolates in waffle cones.
Koro hands the vendor payment and in return he presents the two teenagers with their ice cream. Lilith immediately feels happier.
Markov Residence, Alloroc's room; night. Alloroc is lying on his bed, and Balduin is lying on a spare mattress next to him. They were still awake.
Alloroc:
Can't you sleep?
Balduin:
I'm not used to sleeping on this kind of bed.
Alloroc:
I'd never take you camping.
Balduin:
Why? Just because I'm a prince? I free rock-climb.
Alloroc:
Just kidding.
Balduin chuckles.
Balduin:
So, what do you like about Dawn anyway?
Alloroc:
Aside from external beauty, I just really like the 'devil may care' attitude she has. I guess I've lived on the straight and narrow for so long that when I finally met someone with a less strict and more carefree demeanour, I felt instantly drawn towards her.
Balduin:
It finally dawned on you. What about the other girls aside from Crush?
Alloroc:
Lilith and Paine, you already know them. Kacey is a speedster like Dawn but has additional bad luck powers. Mar'i is half-Tamaranean and the leader of your future team. She shares leadership roles with Damian. Helena is Damian's half-sister and mainly uses a crossbow. Lian is an archer and daughter of a former assassin. Olivia is an archer too but also has a sonic scream. I mean they're alright, but there's just something different about Dawn, you know?
Balduin:
I know. I feel the same way about Paine.
Alloroc:
What is it about Paine that you like so much?
Balduin:
She is beautiful, intelligent, calm unlike her siblings and does not need me to protect her. She is a strong and independent woman.
Alloroc:
So, I guess we seek the same things in a girl?
Balduin:
You could say that.
Alloroc:
Goodnight, cousin.
He turns over and goes to sleep to the sound of the waves crashing against the shore.
Alloroc:
(To himself) Good night Dawn. Wherever you are right now, I wish you nothing but nice dreams.
Balduin:
Quiet please.
Alloroc:
Sorry.
Balduin then turns over, cradling the necklace he got for Paine in his hand.
Balduin:
See you tomorrow, Paine.
And so he falls asleep.
Jump City, Logan Residence; the next morning. Paine had gotten up at dawn in order to meet Balduin early. After a warm shower she gets dressed in her best dress; a dark green dress with sequins and black shoes. She's about to walk out the front door when...
Lilith:
Aren't you a little overdressed for where you're going?
Paine:
I don't think that's any of your business, sis.
Lilith:
Just wanted to see you off, and hope all goes well with Prince Charming.
Paine:
So thank you and obviously it will go well.
Lilith:
I know it will. And when you're in Markovia, make sure you deliver on your promise.
Paine:
We'll see.
She walks out the door.
New York; later that day. The Markov family arrive.
Alloroc:
(Sigh) The Big Rotten Apple.
Balduin:
I don't know why you're complaining, cousin. Your Titans Tower is in a location just like this one. I would've thought you'd be used to these types of environments by now.
Alloroc:
It feels like every major battle happens here, a wretched hive of greed and villainy.
Garth:
Don't worry, son, we'll be home before you know it. And if worst come to worst, you always have your powers to fall back on.
Alloroc:
I hope we don't have to use them.
Paine:
Balduin, Al, over here!
Alloroc:
(Annoyed) What is with everyone calling me 'Al' all of a sudden?!
The Markovs look to see Paine approaching them. Balduin grins.
Balduin:
Paine, glad you could make it.
Paine:
I wouldn't miss the chance to spend the day with you, Balduin.
Alloroc:
(Whispers to Balduin) I think now would be a good time as any to give Paine your gift.
Balduin:
(Reaches into his pocket) Paine, I got this for you while I was in Jamaica. I hope you like it.
Paine:
Balduin, it's beautiful! And it has my favourite colours too!
Balduin:
What can I say? I know what you like.
She hugs him in response.
Paine:
Thank you very much, Balduin. (She puts it on) What do you think?
Balduin blushes.
Balduin:
You're...perfect. Matches your dress.
Brion:
As much as we'd like to linger on this moment, we should get going. Our limo is already here.
Balduin:
Ladies first.
Paine smirks as she and Terra get into the limousine first followed by Balduin, Alloroc, Garth, and Brion. Brion closes the door behind him and the limousine drives off. As the limousine drives off to the UN headquarters, up on a rooftop, Blockbuster watches them.
Blockbuster:
Now the fun begins.
In the limousine, Brion receives a call from Roy Harper.
Brion:
Roy, how's everything?
Roy:
(Voice) Very good, your majesty. Me and my security team have just made it.
Brion:
We're on our way right now.
Roy:
(Voice) We'll be waiting for you, your highness.
Balduin:
How fortunate that Uncle Roy is offering us his assistance today.
Alloroc:
You know what they say, it's good to have friends in high places.
Brion:
He's just a friend, who happens to be in a high place, like most of my sisters' friends.
Paine:
With us superheroes and Uncle Roy's whole security team, I'd say you have nothing to worry about, Uncle Brion.
Suddenly, the front of the limousine is hit by a hard force, which splits the front from the rest of the vehicle. The driver and Brion are thrown across the road as Paine creates a protective force-field around their part of the limousine as it tumbles. Once it stops, they get out.
Garth:
Is everyone alright?
Alloroc:
I've been better, but at least nothing's broken.
Terra:
Brion!
She runs over to the wreckage of the other half of the limo; she pushes it off and reveals two bodies. Balduin joins her; he checks the driver.
Balduin:
Drivers' dead. How is Dad?
Brion opens his eyes and coughs, and struggles to move, as part of the smashed limo was lodged into his hip. Balduin runs over to his father and sees some blood starting to come out of his hip.
Terra:
Don't move! (To the others) Help!
As they tend to Brion, Balduin looks around for the cause, but doesn't see anyone suspicious, even among the stunned witnesses.
Balduin:
Someone really doesn't want us to be at the UN.
Paine assesses Brion.
Paine:
This is beyond my abilities.
Fire engines, police cars and an ambulance pull up. Brion is laid onto a stretcher and loaded into the ambulance.
Garth:
I'll call Roy and tell him to send a couple of his guys over to the hospital. If Brion survived, whoever did this will not stop until he is gone.
Terra:
I'll go with my brother to make sure he gets there safe.
The two kiss and Terra, Balduin, Paine and Alloroc get in the ambulance with Brion and it drives away.
Later, at the hospital; Brion is placed into the intensive care ward as his family watch him, and surgeons try to remove the object.
Vicki Vale:
(On the TV) Terror has struck in the streets of New York, when the King of Markovia, Brion, was attacked in a merciless assassination attempt while en-route to the UN to deliver an address on metahuman rights. Authorities have blocked off the attack site and are investigating for any link between the attack and a possible political enemy of the king.
Alloroc turns off the TV as the surgeons remove the object from his hip.
Alloroc:
How is he?
Doctor:
Well, we've removed it, and have stopped the bleeding, but he's unconscious.
Terra:
Do you have any idea when he'll come out of his coma?
Doctor:
It's hard to say really. We'll do what we can on our end, but the rest is up to him.
Paine:
Balduin, I'm so sorry this happened.
Balduin:
(Stoically) The time for sorrow can wait. Right now we need to figure out who did this.
Alloroc:
Are you serious, cousin? You want to go on a wild goose chase now?
Balduin:
I want to know who, or what, did this.
At the door, Roy enters in his Bowhunter Security uniform, accompanied by four guards.
Roy:
Alright, fill us in on everything that happened.
Terra:
We were on our way to the UN when we were struck by something; Brion survived, but the driver wasn't so fortunate. This couldn't have been an accident.
Roy:
Who do you guys think would plan an attack like this?
Balduin:
It can't be Count Vertigo. Not only is he still in prison, but he doesn't possess that type of power. At least, not anymore.
Paine:
Whoever did that to the limo must be pretty freaking strong.
Balduin:
C'mon.
Balduin, Alloroc and Paine leave the room while Terra sits next to Brion.
Alloroc:
Not that I'm afraid or anything, but if we're going after whoever trashed the limo, I think it'll take more than the three of us to subdue him.
Paine:
Well then, boys, I think it's time we phone a few friends.
Jump City Titans Tower: Meanwhile. Nightstar was in the training room, fighting 4D holograms. Damian comes in with Nightstar's favourite drink.
Damian:
You've been working hard lately, babe. You deserve a break. (Hands Nightstar the beverage)
Nightstar:
Mustard! Thanks.
She takes the "beverage" and consumes it.
Damian:
You know mustards' a condiment, not a beverage.
Nightstar:
(Whilst nuzzling the bottle) Tastes amazing though.
Damian just chuckles and smiles
Nightstar:
(Puts down the "beverage") I'm taking a shower. Feel free to join me.
Damian:
Say less, Mar'i, let's go!
Before the two of them can go anywhere, their communicators start going off, annoying the both of them.
Damian:
Man, every time!
Nightstar:
(Looks at the contact) It's Paine. (She answers it) Hello?
Paine:
(On the screen) Have you guys seen the news lately?
Damian:
What's going on?
Paine:
(On the screen) We're in New York. Someone attacked us on the way to the UN for Uncle Brion's address.
Nightstar:
Is he alright?
Paine:
(On the screen) He's in the hospital now, but Alloroc, Balduin and I are going on a manhunt to find the bastard responsible.
On the other end, Balduin is blushing from hearing Paine curse; clearly he's turned on by it.
Nightstar:
We'll be right over. (She hangs up and turns to Damian) Ready to take a trip into the Big Apple, babe?
Damian:
Maybe when this is all over, New York has a lot of five star hotels, maybe we can slip into a room and-
Nightstar:
(Lovingly pats his face) We'll see.
Damian goes off to get changed while Nightstar sends a message to the other members of their division. The message reads, 'Who wants to go on a field trip to NYC?'
Later, the five Jump City Titans are in the T-Jet, flying east to New York.
Nightstar:
Paine said to meet her, Balduin, and Alloroc in Central Park.
Kid Flash:
Can we go to the zoo afterwards?
Nightstar:
We'll see.
Kid Flash:
Yeah!
Robin:
I see them right down there!
As the T-Jet gets closer to Central Park they see Alloroc, Balduin, and Paine, currently dresses as Emerald Witch, by the fountain. They land and disembark.
Emerald Witch:
Glad you could make it.
Nightstar:
Do you have any idea who would want to kill Uncle Brion?
Alloroc:
Honestly with his goal of ending the mistreatment of metahumans, the better question would be who wouldn't want to kill him.
Balduin:
As much as it pains me to admit it, he has made a lot of enemies over the years. Vertigo, Lex and Lena Luthor, Cobblepot, and so on.
Emerald Witch:
Another possibility could be that one of them hired some 'muscle' to try and take him out.
Alloroc:
Dad's assisting the police in the investigation.
Balduin:
And Uncle Roy is guarding my father with his life.
Robin:
Where's the scene?
Balduin:
This way.
They follow them, but Damon is too busy fishing in the fountain. Crush grabs his tail and pulls him.
Crush:
Boys.
Damon:
But... fish.
Crush:
After the mission.
When they get to the crime scene, it has been taped off to the public.
Robin:
Damn!
Balduin:
Yeah, whoever did this was no ordinary mook.
Crush:
A brute; my treat.
Damon:
A worthy opponent awaits! Let me at 'im!
Nightstar:
Wait! We still don't know who did this. (She and Robin bend down onto the road and analyse the scene)
Robin activates his mask's UV function.
Robin:
I'm detecting faint traces of static electricity.
Nightstar:
Livewire?
Robin:
I think so.
Balduin, Alloroc and Emerald Witch stare at the wrecked limo for any indication it was Livewire's doing.
Emerald Witch:
If I had been more focused, I should have picked up on her aura.
Balduin:
What's done is done. Let's focus on finding her.
Alloroc:
Didn't she work for Blockbuster?
Robin:
I thought he had it in for Nightwing. Not Geo-Force.
Alloroc:
Maybe he wants to go after the Titans he's been around. Like my mother.
Balduin:
And my father was the one who got hurt. No, he was the target.
Kid Flash:
(Analysing the inside of the limo) Y'know, if they wanted to be subtle, they could've dispatched something like bomb dogs to finish the job.
Robin:
Still haven't gotten over that one, have you?
Nightstar:
Can't say I don't blame her. It's a new kind of evil to want to turn such harmless creatures into tools of war.
Balduin:
(To Emerald Witch) What's this about bomb dogs?
Emerald Witch:
During Damian's party, some guy claiming to be the new Joker rounded up a bunch of dogs and attached bombs to them. Nightstar, Robin, Superboy and Black Arrow went out to disable the bombs, free the dogs, and take down this Joker.
Balduin:
That's just messed up.
Nightstar:
He was trying to be as crazy as the original.
Robin:
No-one can match the original. (Gets up) Find anything in the cab?
Kid Flash put on her goggles.
Kid Flash:
Yeah, I'm detecting a lot of static. But Livewire could be anywhere now.
Balduin:
If she really wants to kill my father, she could try again at the hospital.
Alloroc:
But Uncle Roy and my parents are there. They should be able to handle her, right?
Kid Flash stands up from the cab and Crush nearly laughs.
Kid Flash:
(Annoyed) What?!
Crush:
Look in the mirror.
Kid Flash looks at her reflection in the rear-view mirror; the static electricity has caused her hair to frizz up and stick out. She looks to see that everyone, with the exception of Emerald Witch and Balduin, are trying to stifle bouts of laughter, causing her to pout. Kid Flash takes her hairbrush and puts it back in place in two seconds.
In another part of New York, Livewire meets with Blockbuster in an alleyway.
Livewire:
I hit the limo, but the king survived.
Blockbuster:
Then we'll have to try something else. Let's go pay the king a visit at the hospital. And Livewire, there can be no mistakes this time.
Livewire:
Just tell me what I gotta do.
Blockbuster:
Turn off the electricity in the hospital. Even if there is a backup generator, it will cause panic and we can take action.
Livewire:
And those patients on life support?
Blockbuster:
Collateral damage.
At the Hospital, Brion was still unconscious, as Terra sat at his bedside. Outside, Roy touched his ear.
Roy:
How's the ground floor looking?
Guard #1:
(Voice) Ground floor team reporting. No suspicious activity down here.
Roy:
Good. Rooftop team, do you read me?
Guard #2:
(Voice) We're all good up here, boss.
Roy:
Parking lot team?
Guard #3:
(Voice) Everything is looking quiet out here, Roy.
Suddenly, the lights began flashing, and Brion's heart monitor goes static.
Terra:
What's going on?
Roy:
Something's going on with the lights up here.
Guard #3:
(Voice) Yeah, the streetlights out here are flickering too.
Roy:
Check over by the generator.
Guard #3:
(Voice) Yes, sir.
At the generator behind the hospital, Livewire had opened the fuse box and was short-circuiting the circuit board. She was so busy with the generator she didn't even notice the parking lot team approaching her.
Guard #3:
Stop right there! Hands where we can see 'em, lady!
Livewire turns and raises her hands.
Guard #3:
That's right, move slowly if you know what's good for you. You're done here and we're taking you into custody!
Livewire moves closer to the guard.
Guard #3:
(Holds up his gun) Hey, not another step closer.
Livewire:
(Looks at the gun) Nice toy you got there. Just need a little charge.
She fires a jolt of electricity at the guard, badly electrocuting him and knocking him out. Before the rest of his team can react, Livewire subdues them all with jolts of electricity as well. She returns to the generator and successfully short-circuits it.
Livewire:
(Talks into an earpiece) Your on, Blockhead!
Blockbuster:
Please don't call me that.
We see Blockbuster standing on a building across the street from the hospital. He takes a running start before leaping from the rooftop he was on to the hospital's rooftop. The rooftop team confront him, guns out. The team leader picks up his radio.
Guard #1:
Mr. Harper, we have a problem.
Roy:
(Voice) What's going on?
Guard #1:
Some Solomon Grundy wannabe just dropped in out of nowhere.
Blockbuster:
When I get through with you, you'll wish I was Solomon Grundy!
Guard #1:
Open fire!
In Brion's hospital room, Roy loses contact with the Rooftop team.
Roy:
Rooftop team, can you hear me? (No response)
Terra:
Roy, what's going on?
Roy:
My guest? An uninvited guest showed up after visiting hours.
Garth:
I'll go check it out. You two stay here.
He kisses his wife and heads off.
Above them, Blockbuster takes the stairwell down to the hospitals' top floor. As Blockbuster comes charging down the stairs, a group of Roy's guards appear to try and apprehend him.
Guard:
Freeze!
Blockbuster doesn't and makes short work of them. At this point Garth arrives at the stairwell to find all of the unconscious guards and Blockbuster looking right at him.
Blockbuster:
A former Titan? Finally, a real challenge! You can play it easy way or hard way. But in the second case, you too will benefit from the care of this hospital with a little luck.
Garth arms himself with his trident.
Blockbuster:
I see you chose the hard way.
Garth:
The easy way is never an option!
Outside, the Titans arrive to see people evacuating the building.
Alloroc:
What's going on?
Doctor:
Two supervillains invaded the hospital!
Emerald Witch:
What did they look like?
Doctor:
One big guy and a blue haired girl who can shoot lightning bolts out of her hands.
Nightstar:
Blockbuster and Livewire.
Kid Flash:
I'll take care of them.
Nightstar:
No, wait-
She sprints into the hospital.
Robin:
She's going to get herself killed one day.
Nightstar:
Let's split up! Emerald Witch, Alloroc, Balduin, Crush. You four go check on Brion. I have a feeling Blockbuster is heading to his room to finish the job. As for Robin, Damon, and I, we'll go after Kid Flash. Hopefully she went to look for Livewire instead of risking it with Blockbuster.
Their weapons armed, they enter the hospital.
On the top floor, Garth had been thrashed by Blockbuster, who throws him through a wall into another ward.
Blockbuster:
Be lucky I let you live.
Kid Flash punches him.
Kid Flash:
Lucky? Don't you mean "unlucky"?
But Blockbuster didn't feel anything and barely moved a few millimetres.
Blockbuster:
Speedsters are too impulsive. That's why they die quickly.
Kid Flash blows on her hand.
Kid Flash.
Ow! I thought I'd beat him by running fast but it's like hitting a steel wall.
Blockbuster:
And I hit like a speeding truck!
Blockbuster then punches her, sending her flying down the hall. Nightstar catches up to her
Nightstar:
Could you stop rushing in all the time?
Kid Flash:
It's my nature.
Nightstar:
That nature will get you killed one day.
Blockbuster:
Nightwing's daughter. If I wasn't already busy, I would have killed you to make your father suffer but that will be for another time.
Nightstar:
Why in such a hurry? Are you afraid my whole team will come and kick your ass?
Blockbuster:
Ha! Have you seen my new look? I'm starting think getting dunked in that Electrum was more of a blessing than a curse! Why don't you and your friends come closer so you can see what I mean?
Livewire appears behind them.
Livewire:
Good, you haven't killed them yet.
Blockbuster:
I can take these brats on by myself, Livewire. You go find the king and finish what you started!
Livewire:
I'm already there!
Livewire speeds off to look for King Brion's room. Alloroc and Balduin pursue her.
Outside Brion's room, Roy stands watch until he sees Livewire heading his way.
Terra:
You again?
Livewire:
Yes, it's me again. Now, kindly step aside and let me do my job!
Roy:
As if!
He reaches for his gun, only for Livewire to shock it, causing it to disintegrate in his hands. Terra looks out at the corner of the room to see a potted plant. She uses her powers to throw the dirt in Livewire's face allowing Roy to tackle her to the ground. Balduin and Alloroc appear.
Roy:
Balduin, Alloroc!
Livewire kicks Roy off of her and is ready to zap him with lightning. Alloroc activates his electro-blades as Balduin throws soil from the potted plant at Livewire to distract her. Unfortunately, Livewire recovers and fires a lightning blast at Balduin. Fortunately for him, Alloroc blocks the attack with his electro-blades. In fact, the lightning blast gave his electro-blades even more power.
Alloroc:
Okay.
He turns his electro-blades into water jets, and fires the electrified water at Livewire. Livewire, realising her mistake, is too late to react and is blasted. The water blast is so strong that it sends Livewire through a few walls, and when she finally stops in front of the other Titans, she falls unconscious.
Crush:
That's a lame weakness! I should have gone to fight Blockbuster.
Emerald Witch:
If there are other would-be assassins, I'll let you have your fun.
Crush:
Really? Thanks!
Blockbuster:
Me? A coward?
Crush:
Exactly. You're hiding behind Terra because you're too afraid to face me.
Blockbuster:
I can beat you whenever I want but now is not the time. I have to kill the king and the prince and maybe even the king's sister.
Emerald Witch:
(Stepping forward) What is it you want with Brion? What has he done to you? What do you have to gain from killing him?
Blockbuster:
i could care less about that royal pain in the ass! I'm only doing it per the instructions of my new employer.
Nightstar:
New employer?
Robin:
What's wrong, Blocky? Can't pull off a crime without someone to tell you to?
Blockbuster:
Now that you mention it, (looks at Nightstar) your mommy and daddy aren't hear to protect you.
Nightstar:
I don't need protecting.
Robin:
(smirks) Believe me, she doesn't.
Blockbuster:
Is that right? Well then...PROVE IT!
Blockbuster charges at Nightstar. Nightstar swings her bo-staff at him. Nightstar swings her bo-staff at him and Blockbuster just stops and catches it in her hand.
Blockbuster:
Nice toy.
With minimal effort, Blockbuster breaks the bo-staff as Nightstar is still holding onto her end. With the bo-staff broken, she pushes Nightstar away before throwing his half of the broken weapon at her. That's when Robin gets in the way and parries it with his sword. Blockbuster parries him, before picking up Livewire's unconscious body. He throws her body at the Titans, distracting them while he runs through the broken walls to Brion's hospital room.
Blockbuster:
I'll handle this myself!
Nightstar:
Let's go after him ! I don't know who he's working for but he can't succeed.
Livewire:
(Regaining consciousness) Ugh, my head.
Robin:
Alloroc, take care of her. You're the best person to neutralize her if necessary.
Alloroc:
No problem.
Robin:
Everyone else, c'mon!
They run after Blockbuster. When they catch up with him, he's already holding Terra and Roy in a choke-hold.
Balduin:
Auntie!
Blockbuster:
Take one step and their necks go 'snap!'
Balduin steps forward.
Balduin:
Blockbuster, why would you go out of your way to end the life of someone you have no personal grudge with?
Blockbuster:
For personal reasons.
Robin:
You're just a hitman, a gun-for-hire. Who's your employer?
Blockbuster:
Guess who. Here's a hint; You recently dealt with him back in Gotham.
Balduin:
Vertigo!
Crush:
So, you pretty much came her to pick up where that jackass left off!
Robin:
And you made the mistake of selling him out to us.
Blockbuster:
I only told you because in a few minutes...you'll all be dead where you stand!
Crush:
I don't think you know the particularity of my species. I can't die.
Blockbuster:
Wanna test that theory?
Crush:
(Cracking her neck) Yeah..finally..some fun!
She reaches for Obelus, but just before she can take it out, Blockbuster is impaled through the mid-section by a trident. This causes him to drop Terra and Roy.
Garth:
Thanks for the diversion, Crush.
Crush:
(Disappointed) But...my fight...
Before Blockbuster could grab for the two of them, Damon charges at Blockbuster and briefly manages to pin him against the wall.
Blockbuster:
Get off me, you leather bag.
Blockbuster pushes back against Damon, but Crush steps forward and together, she and Damon keep Blockbuster pinned. Crush punches Blockbuster.
Crush:
Woooo, that felt great!
Kid Flash sprints off and returns with a hose and ties him up.
Kid Flash:
And it's over!
After another punch from Crush, Blockbuster falls to the ground with a loud thud, his body not moving.
Robin:
Is he...you know.
Nightstar:
He's alive; he'll always come back, no matter what.
At that moment, the heart monitor begins beeping again and Brion slowly opens his eyes and his hands twitch.
Brion:
Ugh...wha- Where am I?
Terra:
Brion!
Balduin:
Father!
Brion's sister and son run over to him and hug him.
Brion:
What did I miss?
Balduin:
Vertigo sent Blockbuster to kill you, and he and Livewire almost got the job done.
Robin:
But don't worry, your highness, we put a stop to the both of them. (Points at Blockbuster's unconscious body)
He sits up, but feels a pain in his hip.
Terra:
You need to rest.
Brion:
But I've got to be at the United Nations for the-
Balduin:
I think they'll understand.
Brion:
Maybe.
Alloroc enters, dragging Livewire in with him.
Alloroc:
Got one more for you.
Emerald Witch:
I'll teleport them to Belle Reve.
They hear sirens outside; the NYPD had arrived and surrounded the hospital. The sound of the sirens causes Livewire to wake up, but she's still too weak to do anything.
Alloroc:
(Jokingly; to Livewire) I think your ride is here. (Notices Blockbuster) And yours.
Emerald Witch:
Or just take them to the prison van.
Outside, the Titans and Roy are dragging the criminals to the PD while paramedics treat Roy's guards. Blockbuster and Livewire are loaded into the vans.
Kid Flash:
So what happens now? I mean, about the King's speech and everything?
Emerald Witch:
Yeah, I feel like something like this isn't easy to reschedule.
Terra:
(Walking outside) Brion's decided to deliver the address remotely.
Robin:
Good. So hopefully everyone will see him in his hospital bed as well as his injuries to really hammer home the abuse metahumans have been facing.
Kid Flash:
(Looking at the time on her communicator) Zoo's gonna close in an hour. Must be quick.
She sprints off.
Nightstar:
Okay, free time.
Robin:
(Looks at Nightstar) Well, babe, we're in the City That Never Sleeps. What do you want to do now that everything has calmed down?
Nightstar:
Find somewhere to rest and relax. Know any good hotels?
Robin:
Park Central.
Nightstar:
Let's go.
She picks him up in her arms and they fly away.
Alloroc:
(With a hint of envy) Wish that Dawn and I were at that stage.
Emerald Witch:
(Forming a portal) Balduin, Terra and I are visiting a certain inmate; you're free to come with.
Balduin:
I think I know who you're talking about, and yes, I'd love to tag along. I have a few choice words for him and then some.
Alloroc feels a bit better and follows them through the portal.
Vlatava: a bit later. At the Maximum Security Prison, Vertigo looks up when he hears footsteps.
Count Vertigo:
Blockbuster, have you completed your mission?
Terra:
Is this a confession?
Vertigo turns to see Terra, Balduin, Alloroc and Emerald Witch standing outside his cell.
Count Vertigo:
You have no proof.
Terra:
No need; it was easy to guess.
Count Vertigo:
(Under his breath) I should've hired a squad. (Realises they heard him) Oops.
Terra:
You've earned yourself a longer stay here, and your attempt on my brothers' life has only increased sympathy for the very thing you despise.
Count Vertigo:
That wasn't the only intended victim.
Alloroc:
Tell me more.
Count Vertigo:
Guess.
Balduin:
If you wanted to kill my father, it would make sense that I would be next.
Count Vertigo:
Indeed, it's too easy to guess.
Emerald Witch:
Let's leave.
Terra:
Goodbye.
They leave.
Balduin:
I'm impressed. You managed to keep your cool.
Emerald Witch:
He's already in custody. Anger doesn't get you anywhere. Even if he planned to kill you too, I can stay calm.
Terra:
Wise decision.
New York; evening. At the Park Central hotel, Damian and Mar'i had changed out of their Robin and Nightstar attire, and checked into a suite, and were now lying on the bed, eating nachos and watching a movie.
Mar'i:
This was a good idea.
Damian:
We deserved this, after everything we've been through recently.
Mar'i:
Honestly, it's because of those moments that makes me cherish moments like shouldn't miss his address though.
Damian:
Maybe it's on right now.
Damian changes the channel to CNN. The TV shows the UN, and the representatives from other countries were focused on a large screen, showing Brion in his hospital bed.
Brion:
(On the screen) Hello, I come to you virtually today because while here in New York, I became the victim of an assassination attempt. This isn't the first attempt against my life, and it won't be the last. Buy it's not only me that has to deal with such things on a daily basis. It's my son, my sister, and countless other metahumans scattered all over the globe. Everyday, our kind is subjected to an assortment of injustices; experimentation, assassinations, slander, among other heinous forms of discrimination.
In Markovia, Balduin and Paine are at his home, watching the address in his bedroom.
Brion:
(On the screen) Starting today, we must see to it that every metahuman never has to live another day in constant fear. It is our responsibility that such prejudices towards them across the globe never happen again.
Paine:
Even when bedridden, your father is an excellent speaker.
Balduin:
It's what my grandfather taught him; to speak, no matter what.
Paine:
You have some big shoes to fill when you take the throne. You nervous?
Balduin:
I'm sure it'll be one of those things where I'll learn on the job.
Paine:
I'm sure you'll do well.
She lays her head on his shoulder Paine yawns.
Paine:
What a day.
Balduin:
You should get some sleep.
Paine:
I promised to get something for Lilith.
Balduin:
I can go shopping with you in the morning if you'd like.
Paine:
I'd like that.
Balduin:
Anyway, you can sleep on my bed tonight if you'd like.
Paine:
You don't mind?
Balduin:
You're a guest. I can sleep on the couch.
Paine:
Thanks, Balduin...hey, Balduin.
Balduin:
Yes, Paine?
Paine looks at Balduin, who looks back at her, curious as to what she has to say.
Paine:
Uh, nothing. It's not important right now.
Balduin:
Oh, if you say so.
Paine:
Well... Goodnight.
Balduin:
Yeah. Sleep well, Paine.
Balduin gets out of bed so Paine can get herself under the cover for a good night sleep. Balduin leaves the room and closes the door behind him, with the last words he whispers as he goes down stairs being...
Balduin:
(Whispers) I love you.
New York; meanwhile. At the Park Central Hotel, Damian and Mar'i are watching as Brion ends his address with applause from the UN. Damian turns off the TV.
Damian:
Well, now that that's over, what do you want to do now, babe?
Mar'i:
I have an idea that I think you might like.
Damian:
Do tell.
Mar'i:
I'd rather show. Come here, you!
Damian and Mar'i begin kissing and embracing each other on the bed. They begin feeling each other under their shirts. Just as they were about to take each other's shirts off, Damian's communicator starts going off.
Mar'i:
(Annoyed) Aw man!
Damian:
(Grabs the communicator to see Balduin is calling them) It's Balduin? I wonder what he wants. (He answers it) Yes?
Balduin:
(Voice) Can I talk to you? It's about relationships.
Damian:
Alright. (Turns to Mar'i) I just have to talk to Balduin really quick. I'll be back, I promise.
Mar'i:
I'll be waiting.
Damian takes the communicator and goes out onto the balcony with it. He changes it to 'Video'; Balduin's face appears on the small screen.
Damian:
So, have you told her?
Balduin:
(On the comm) I was about to, but she was so worn out from all of the fighting today that I let her fall asleep in my bed before I could even muster up the courage to tell her how I feel. Although I did give her a nice seashell necklace and she liked it a lot, so I think I'm making some headway.
Damian:
That's good.
Balduin:
(On the comm) I just need to find a way to really muster up the courage and tell her.
Damian:
Well, the best advice I can give you is that telling a girl you like her is like ripping off a band-aid; the only way to do it is to just do it.
Balduin:
(On the comm) Will that work? How do you know it's effective?
Damian:
Because I've done it.
Balduin:
(On the comm) And if she says no?
Damian:
At least you can say you tried. Besides, asking a girl to go out with you and being rejected is better than not asking her at all and spending the rest of your days fantasizing about 'what could've been'.
Balduin:
(On the comm) Thanks for the advice, Prince Damian of Gotham.
Damian:
No need for formalities; we're friends.
Balduin:
(On the comm) Noted. Well, have a good night.
The call disconnects and Damian is ready to back inside with Mar'i.
Damian:
Now then, Mar'i, where were we?
Damian re-enters the bedroom to find Mar'i...sound asleep. All of that fighting took a lot of Mar'i as well. Damian sighs, disappointed their attempt at romance was scuppered... again. Damian instead just gets in bed with Mar'i, cuddles up next to her, and goes to sleep as well.
Logan Residence; two days later. Lilith is in the kitchen, eating tofu, when the front door opens.
Paine:
I'm home!
Lilith:
Sis, you're back!
Lilith runs up to her sister and hugs her.
Lilith:
How was it?
Paine:
It had its moments.
Lilith:
Did you get me something?
Paine:
See for yourself. (She holds out a bag which Lilith generously takes)
Lilith:
What's in it?
She reaches inside and pulls out a jar of candy. Immediately, Lilith's mouth begins watering.
Lilith:
Markovian candy!
Paine:
(Smiles) I know how much of a sweet tooth you have.
Lilith:
Thanks, sis!
Paine:
Don't eat it all at once.
Lilith:
To you, I make no promises!
She leaves to enjoy her candy. Paine smiles as she watches her sister take the candy elsewhere.
Paine:
I wonder how Murdoc's been doing since I've been away.
She heads upstairs to Murdoc's room.
In Murdoc's Room, he is sitting at his desk, writing song lyrics, but sighs in anger and scrunches up the paper before throwing it in the overflowing bin. He hears a knock on the door.
Murdoc:
What is it?
Paine:
It's me, Murdoc. I'm back from Markovia. Can I come in?
Murdoc gets up from his desk and opens the door for his sister.
Murdoc:
I'm busy.
Paine:
Just wanted to see how you were doing and if...'they' visited you at all while I was gone.
Murdoc:
No. I'm sorry, sis, I'm glad your home and I'm glad you care about me, but I've got to get back to work.
Paine:
Alright. See you at dinner?
Murdoc:
Maybe.
She closes the door as Paine walks off to her room. Paine enters her room and lies on her bed, a smile on her face.
Paine:
(Looking at her new seashell necklace with a loving sigh) Balduin.
