Tanya gently drifted down to Mark. His face was a cascade of joy, his powers were finally here! She smiled as his joy was rather infectious. "Wait here sis, I'll get changed and we can head home." She nodded as she waited in the air floating gently above the ground and Mark entered the back of the restaurant.
With a glance at the sky she absorbed the calm of the clear skies around her. The door latched open again as Mark stepped out in his casual wear.
"Let me guess, I'm flying you like old times?" Tanya joked. Mark sheepishly scratched the back of his head as he laughed nervously, and Tanya raised an eyebrow. "Well then, since you're no doubt tougher we can really amp up the speed."
She barely gave him time to react as she whipped behind him and grabbed him in a hug. Mark's entire world spun as Tanya flew faster than he had ever watched her move. He squeezed his eyes shut just before the sound barrier shattered around them, and laughter escaped from Tanya at Mark's expense.
She landed gently at the front door before dropping Mark whose legs gave out underneath him. "Come on Mark, that wasn't even my top speed," she teased gently, before opening the door and floating up to the spare room she sometimes stayed in.
Mark had to catch his breath before regaining his balance. He walked slowly into the house and placed his jacket and bag at the base of the stairs just past the front door. He then marched into the dining room with his hands in his pocket and a smile on his face.
Steps echoed down from upstairs as Tanya stepped down stairs, changed from her costume into a comfortable T-shirt and sweatpants.
"And a big welcome home to my favourite children," Debbie spoke jovially. "I made some chicken but I also heated up some authentic German bratwurst flown in today, just for you Mark… and for Tanya I made a fresh cup of coffee."
Tanya's eyes immediately honed in on the coffee, and she lifted the cup and took a sip before her eyes closed in contentment. "Delicious as ever Debbie," Tanya said, lowering her cup.
"I… had a pretty interesting day," Mark trailed off this was before Nolan zoomed into the house at speeds that spoke of his experience at moving at those speeds, and Debbie by reflex caught the wine glass without taking her eyes off her son.
Nolan leaned down to kiss Debbie's cheek. "Sorry I'm late, honest to god a dragon was attacking Hong Kong. I stopped it."
"Ooh, a dragon, nice. Mark was getting ready to tell us how interesting his day was."
Tanya raised a brow at the sudden spotlight Mark had gotten, "Guess who's finally getting his powers," he chuckled slightly nervously as all attention was on him.
"Are you sure?" Nolan questioned in a serious tone.
"Quite, as he nearly covered me in trash as he threw a trash bag into orbit," Tanya interjected.
Nolan glanced at Tanya, "Oh, that's great son, just great. If you're up for it, I'll make some time tomorrow for training like I did your sister."
Tanya winced at that, "Maybe not as intense as me."
"This is so exciting," Debbie smiled at her son.
"Bright and early tomorrow Mark. Make sure you get a good night's sleep."
"For sure," Mark agreed with Nolan, and Tanya just silently sipped from her coffee.
"Work has given me another assignment," Tanya stated, causing Debbie to frown.
"So soon? I thought you would have some more time off," Debbie said.
"You know how it is, I'll be gone before sunrise," Tanya said.
"What is it that you even do?" Mark questioned and Tanya paused in her movements for a fraction of a second.
"I help with space launches and help clean up all the trash in orbit," she said and smirked at the small jab at his earlier stunt.
"NASA really needs to force the Immortal to clean it all up, he throws almost everything into space," Nolan joked.
Tanya stood from her seat, "Anyways, I need to get an early rest as I will be up before dawn, so I bid everyone good night," and she lifted her empty plate to the kitchen. Mark never even noticed her eating her dinner as he only saw her drinking coffee.
But Mark did notice Tanya seemed more rigid when answering the question, as she stepped up the stairs toward her room, he wondered what she really did for work.
An alarm blared as Mark woke up, mentally and physically exhausted from a lack of sleep, groaning as he pushed himself off of his bed and leaned off the side of it and put his head in his hand.
Mark's bedroom door opened and Nolan leaned on the doorframe. "Put some pants on and let's get into the sky my boy." Mark looked back at his father, and with tired eyes stared at him for a moment before standing up and walking past him.
Seeing how tired Mark was, Nolan raised an eyebrow "I'll put some coffee on, the one Tanya drinks, don't tell her."
Mark stepped into the bathroom to freshen up, while Nolan stepped down stairs and pulled out two mugs and turned the coffee machine on.
Mark stepped down stairs in fresh clothes to find a fresh mug of coffee and drank it swiftly to wash away his tiredness.
Nolan drank his coffee and lifted off the ground and watched Mark unsteadily rise after him with a wobbly drift. Mark tried to steady himself but his sense of balance while flying was still off
Nolan watched for a bit, noting the differences between Mark and Tanya, Tanya was a natural in the air, Mark not so much. "It's kind of like how you walk and you don't think about balancing anymore but when you were a baby you did. You are a baby flyer right now and you have to focus on staying upright."
Mark began drifting to the side of his father, "You have to focus on what direction you want to go, understand?" Nolan asked.
"Yeah, I think I got it," Mark replied drifting away from his father.
"It doesn't look like you do," Nolan watched him. "Follow me," he looked up and he flew up.
Mark watched his father and tried to emulate him, moving to the side for a moment before dropping a touch, "No, no," he muttered before he looked back at his father and flew upwards to catch up to him.
Both of them were now flying at a moderate pace and Nolan continued his teaching "You can wear yourself out flying, Moving fast is like tensing a muscle. You are much better off if you relax that muscle from time to time," he raised his arms forward for a bit as he spoke and then relaxed them back at his sides to demonstrate the idea. "Use the momentum to carry you forward."
Mark sped up a bit in front of Nolan but he easily caught up, "Okay. You don't want to fall so you're going to have trouble relaxing. It's kind of like peeing your pants on purpose."
"What?" Mark questioned with his surprise at the statement.
"Peeing your pants on purpose. You know you spend your whole life trying not to pee your pants, so letting go… peeing your pants on purpose is next to impossible."
"H-how do you know this? Who would try that?" Mark asked.
"You are far better at flying than you should be. Late night practice? Is that why you are so tired?" Nolan asked.
"Don't try and change the subject," Mark argued.
"Land over there," Nolan pointed to a patch of grass in a meadow and then dived in that direction, Mark followed just behind him.
Nolan flew beside Mark and kept pace with him. "Slow down," he directed as Mark continued his current speed. "Land, I said land. Why aren't you slowing down?" Nolan slowed down out of reflex.
"I can't!" Mark shouted.
"Stop. Just stop," Nolan's voice raised in worry as he watched Mark speed towards the ground. Mark raised his hands towards his face and crashed into the ground, creating a crater where he landed. When the dust cleared, Mark groaned in pain.
Nolan drifted towards the side of the crater, seeing Mark sprawled in the hole in the ground he made, "Okay, I guess that still counts as a landing. Still better than Tanya's first landing. She crashed at full speed. Get up."
Mark raised himself out, "Come on, we are going to try something else," Nolan said.
Mark dusted himself off, "I'm actually getting used to this a little," he said.
"That's not good," Nolan deadpanned. "Try to hit me," as he poked Mark's chest.
"Really?" Mark questioned.
"Yeah," Nolan confirmed as Mark then got into a rudimentary boxer stance and jabbed at his father.
"How did you train Tanya" Mark asked and Nolan's brows furrowed
"Inserting to objective," Tanya spoke into her respirator, flying in low orbit over a remote area full of mountains and she came to a halt where she rested and awaited a response.
"Copy Tango Niner Five," came her handlers voice, "High Command marked this target as a high priority we need to send a message, preferably no witnesses," Tanya frowned slightly.
"Good copy, moving to complete objective," Tanya fell into a controlled freefall, before she slowed her descent and momentarily hovered above the ground and silently landing on the path. "Clearing the first building," she whispered into her respirator.
Opening the door she crept into the first room to find it empty and moved to another room while hugging the wall to reduce her chances of being seen.
She spotted two guards facing away from her, she crept up and quickly grabbed the first guard and crushed his neck with her hand. The second guard turned to the sound of a body hitting the floor, before he felt a sharp pain in his own neck. His body went numb as he crumpled to the floor, his vision rapidly fading.
Tanya silently continued down the corridor towards another security checkpoint.
"John, I'm not watching the front again because you keep skipping bathroom breaks," the security guard said as he put down his book to look through the security glass, only to meet the cold glare of Tanya. "Int—" his shout was quickly silenced with a wet gurgle, Tanya had speared her hand through the glass and his lungs, her fist crushing his heart in a single stroke.
She ripped her hand from the oozing corpse and pressed the button to open the door, her arm covered in blood dripping onto the floor and broken glass, as she continued to walk into the security checkpoint from behind.
"Was that John again?" a second guard came from her flank and immediately spotted Tanya. Without missing a beat he turned to run, and he reached the security desk before Tanya. Or so he thought, as his head flew through the air.
The guard had failed to reach the alarm button, but it was blaring anyway. Tanya's eyes scanned the security station and noticed four vital signs all flatlining with an alert flashing across the screen. A deadman switch.
"Fuck" was all she said. Glancing at the pair of bloody corpses she had left at the security desk, she now dropped all pretence of stealth and began to sprint down the base, and turned the corner where she saw two guards on high alert, both of them aiming at her.
"Kill this bitch," one of the guards shouted and opened fire. Not needing to dodge the shots she sprinted down the corridor and the pair began to panic as they saw that their rounds did nothing. Moving up to the first guard she moved to the first guard and kicked high.
His head ballooned for a second before it popped, spraying everything in the room with splintered bone and viscera. Tanya immediately drew her attention to the second guard who gaped in terror, before she planted her hand on his neck, and tore his head off.
Dropping the head and bits of spine she turned to the reinforced door that led into the main compound, she took a breath and kicked open the door and saw several guards standing, weapons facing the door.
"Gentlemen," she said, barely gaving them time to respond as she drove her knee through the first guard, his body crumpling as his tailbone shattered into splinters and parts of his pelvis shot through his back. Turning to face the second she dropped her centre of mass slightly, turned and snap kicked, her foot connecting to the underside of his jaw, slamming him into the ceiling with a sickening crunch.
The third guard looked at the other two standing beside him before he dropped his weapon and bolted. He fell on his face as he lost feeling below his abdomen. turning his body only to find the rest of it no longer attached to him. He tried to scream, only for blood to sound out. He continued to spit out more and more blood as he watched the rest of his coworkers fall, and he quickly passed out from blood loss.
Tanya finally reached the main building and entered. She looked around and saw dozens of canisters labelled as holding flammable materials and began to dump them near conveniently placed oxygen tanks. Clearly making their product was toxic, given the copious amounts of oxygen tanks. She looked around and found the compound's manager shivering in his fanciful office, high above the floor. Ignoring him, she raided his desk and found a case of cigars. She took a moment to glare at the boss who started grovelling for his life, and took the accompanying flip lighter without a word. Exiting the office, she ripped a handrail out of the walkway and bent it to keep the office locked shut, effectively trapping the boss in his office.
Tanya stood at the pile of flammable materials and flicked open the lighter. She watched it burn for a moment before chucked it at an oxygen tank before flying through the roof and watched the main building of the compound light up in an inferno.
"This is T-95, All objectives complete. RTB." She glanced back at the compound for a moment.
"Preator copies, good work today. See you at home," came over the radio.
"See you soon." Tanya replied before flying into orbit, and flying back to her island home.
Debbie was laying on the couch when she heard the door open and saw a rather roughed up Mark walk up the stairs silently.
She lifted herself off the couch. Looking up the stairs she saw Mark was heading to his room. "So… how badly did that go?" she said as she leaned on the wall.
"I pushed him pretty far," Nolan said, frowning but not facing his wife, he turned to her, "It's what he needs," he continued.
Debbie turned her head to face Nolan, "Did you maybe push too far?"
"Are you questioning me?!" Nolan raised his voice at her.
"What the hell has gotten into you?" She straightened her posture and put her hands on her hips.
Nolan's anger dissipated, "I don't know I- I'm sorry, Mark getting his powers compared to Tanya, I wasn't prepared for this." he crossed his arms and looked to the side, "It changes things."
Both Debbie and Nolan looked to the top of the stairs, "I can't help but think, if he hadn't gotten them at all," once Nolan had said this, a door slammed echoed from the top of the stairs.
"Geez man, you still sore from Todd's thrashing? What's up?" William asked with concern, and this drew Mark from his thoughts.
"Huh? No I'm fine," Mark quietly said.
"Okay man, you sure look fine," William said, still concerned for Mark.
"Hey! Mark Sebastion Grayson," a voice shouted from behind them both. They turned to find Todd standing there with a smug grin, "And I don't see that hot lady to protect your sorry ass," he said, cracking his knuckles.
"Todd please don't—" Mark tried to say something but Todd slammed him into the lockers.
"Don't?" Todd laughed, "Don't what? Don't kick your ass again?" he mocked, "Or what? Are you threatening me or do you need a replay of what happened last time?" Todd threatened.
"Fine. Hit me, hit me as hard as you can," Mark said, and Todd immediately slammed his fist into Mark's gut, but this time he wasn't winded as before. He straightened, "Again." Todd punched him in the face. "Again, harder," and Todd slammed his fist into Mark's chest to no effect.
A slender hand grabbed Todd's wrist, and both he and Mark looked at the owner. "Okay~ I've seen enough," it was a woman with short blonde hair and tanned skin. Mark sighed quietly.
"I have this Anya," Mark said to a pouting Anya, before she beamed again, and used Todd's offset posture to push him over her foot and trip him as she grabbed Mark's face.
"Look at you~ all grown up," she cooed. She let go and righted her posture, "Anyways, I'm pulling you aside for a moment," she said to Mark's surprised face and made a shushing motion. "It's only for a moment Mark! Tanya needed me to drop this off to you," she reached into her pocket, and it was a set of keys. "In case you are not near home," she winked, of course Anya knew, "Tanya gave you a set of keys to crash at our place."
"Thanks… I guess," Mark said, still a little shell shocked at the development. He had not seen Tanya's house before. She always visited but rarely took visitors, Anya was really the only one that was commonly said to be there often.
Anya smiled and seemed to glow, "I'll let her know you got it~ bye bye!"
