A/N: This is a crossover between Made in Abyss and RWBY. I will let you know now the events from the fall and onwards in this story are no longer canon. Also, the time frame after chapter 1 would take place in volume 7. That being said, let's get the ball rolling.

"Everyone has an imaginary friend or two growing up." A disembodied feminine voice said. "I met mine when I was five years old, and contrary to what people say behind my back. He's very much real. My friend; The amazing Mr. Hollow."

A five-year-old Ruby awoke to find herself in an unknown forest. "Yang? Dad? Uncle Qrow?" she called out. A sudden sound made her squeal in fright. She chose a direction and ran, hearing rushed footsteps behind her.

Looking behind her, Ruby saw a beast and the little girl's eyes widened. It looked like a mutated beowolf, but it didn't look like a Grimm at all.

On a ledge not too far away was a small figure watching the little girl running for her life. "Maaa, what's a little girl doing in the fourth layer without an adult?" the figure narrowed its eyes. "time to save a life." It said hefting a musket that was for its frame.

Ruby continued to run before screeching to a halt, nearly falling off the edge of an extremely deep sinkhole. As she hyperventilated at the height, the beowolf-like creature stalked towards her. 'Guess this is how I die.' She thought as the beast prepared to pounce.

Ruby closed her eyes and braced for the inevitable when a loud gunshot rang out. The beast plowed into the ground, stopping at ruby's feet.

Cautiously, the little girl opened her eyes and nearly backpedaled off the edge. "Maaa, don't fall off after I killed the beast to save your life kid." Came the voice of her savoir. Ruby turned in the direction which it came from and her eyes widened

It had short black hair, tall rabbit-like ears while a tail swayed behind it, a helmet topped with goggles on it atop its head. The wore some kind of overall-like leather armor and a scarf covered its mouth. (think Nanachi with a cave raider helmet that has goggles replacing the lantern whilst a cloth covered the back of the neck)

The two made eye contact. Ruby trembled as the creature approached. It reached for her. It placed a hand on her head. To the girl's surprise, it ruffled her hair.

"Maaa, relax, I won't hurt you." It said in a masculine tone identifying the person as male. The stranger's calming smile fell slightly as his ears twitched. "Follow me please. You'll be safe. I promise." He said holding out his hand or was it paw?

Ruby was hesitant, but what were the chances that she would be able to survive without help. She cautiously grasped it and followed him.

"He led me to his home and made sure I was ok," the voice said in a somber tone

Ruby's face lit up in awe as she and the stranger entered a grove. There in front of them was a moderately sized hut. Just big enough to house three people.

"Come on in. pardon the slight mess. Haven't really had time to clean." The strange creature said hanging what she assumed was used to kill the monster. "the name's Saki. I'm a Narehate or what you surface dwellers call a Hollow." The stranger said as he took his helmet and scarf off.

Ruby watched as the overalls fell, surprisingly the overalls were separate from the pants themselves. "What's your name kiddo?" 'Saki' asked. "Ruby Rose, Mr. Hollow." Ruby said.

"Maaa, you can just call me Saki, ya know." The Narehate said sweat dropping. The five-year-old shook her head. "No, Daddy, and my big sis told me to be respectful. Since you don't have an actual last name, I'll call your Mr. Hollow." Saki's sweat drop doubled in size.

"over the course of a week, Mr. Hollow taught me how to free run/climb on narrow ledges, start campfires, and cook the local cuisine. Not once did he ever raise his voice. He even admitted that he adopted the hollow last name. sadly, like all good things, it had to come to an end." The voice said.

"Ok, I spotted a cave raider camp near us." Mr. Hollow said. "You'll be going home soon." Ruby looked at him and frown. "What do you mean? You're coming too right?" the little girl asked. "No, Narehates aren't exactly liked up top Lil' Rose." He said.

"I'll protect you. I'll tell daddy, big sis, and uncle Qrow what you've done for me. they'll help." Ruby said. Mr. Hollow shook his head. "This is my home, my world. I don't belong there." He said. Ruby looked down before getting an idea.

"Then I'll stay with you." She said. "No." Mr. Hollow said gently pushing her towards the camp. "If I go will I ever see you again. It depends if the people of remnant decides to explore the abyss. When I scouted the camp out I discovered some merchants visiting were from Vale."

Mr. Hollow took off his goggles and gave them to Ruby. "Something to remember me by." The Narehate smiled behind his scarf before lowering it. "I will always be your friend and guardian ruby." He said before kissing her forehead and departing.

YEARS LATER

Beacon

"and just like that, he was gone." Ruby, now 17, said to her team and friends. "What happened next Ruby?" Jaune, leader of team JNPR, asked. "I approached the camp. The raiders were shocked to see a child of all things. Thankfully, my uncle Qrow had been assigned to guard the merchants while they dove into the abyss."

"I find that hard to believe Ruby." Weiss Schnee, Ruby's partner said. "At least someone agrees with me." Yang said. "Ruby, I respect you but its time to move past the whole 'my imaginary friend is real'. This Mr. Hollow guy isn't real."

"The abyss is though. Sides' professor ozpin asked for teams to volunteer to survey it. I registered us." Ruby said much to her team's shock. "WHY!?" came the collective response.

"For two reasons. One, For the adventure. And two, to prove that Mr. Hollow exists to Yang." The buxom blonde slammed her head into the lunch room table.

"What about you guys?" Blake asked, slightly amused at her partner's dilemma. "Nah. You can have your search party." Jaune said. "if there are any other monsters down there like the one you encountered. I wouldn't survive." Ren nodded. "I hope you find your friend down there Ruby." Ruby nodded.

TEAM RWBY'S DORM

Ruby brought out a box labeled 'for abyss usage only'. "What's that?" Blake asked. Before Ruby answered, Yang spoke up. "It's gear Ruby designed specifically for the abyss. The red reaper nodded.

"Yep, I even designed a weapon for the abyss." Ruby said opening the box. She took off he red cloak leaving her back open. She pulled out a vest and put it on. "the vest is based on the cave raiders' jackets." She said placing fingerless gloves on while similar to her current attire, they had metal armor covering the forearms and hands.

The girls watched Ruby strap a grapple hook to the right side of her waist. She hook a holster to her left hip and placed an old school black powder pistol in it. She smiled softly. "You're bringing Abyss Rose?" Yang asked raising an eyebrow as ruby hooked Crescent Rose in its usual spot.

"Course," Ruby said. "That's why she was in the box. I made Abyss Rose specifically for this." The scarlet reaper pocketed an abyss field guide that Mr. Hollow had snuck into her bag before parting ways. Ruby pulled out a look red piece of cloth and wrapped it around her mouth before lowering it.

"Done?" Blake asked as she and the others were ready to go. "One last thing." Ruby said reaching into the box and pulling out a pair of goggles. Despite their age, they were in good shape. She smiled longingly at them. "See you soon Mr. Hollow." Ruby said placing them on her head.

Post A/N: and thus begins my first Made in abyss/ RWBY crossover. Now I may do an AU story in which Ruby stays with Saki the Narehate aka Mr. Hollow. Depends if you guys want to see that. The storyline would be similar, but vastly different.

As for time frame in Made in Abyss lore, the prologue (when Ruby was five) took place roughly around the time Riko was born. While I do plan to include her, reg, and Nanachi in the story it'll only be until the Ido front arc

On the RWBY side of things, while there's no Salem, but Team RWBY still wears their atlas arc attire (with the exception of Ruby, who has modifications to hers)
