Suspicion

Rory was meowing once more, just as the night before and the night before that. It was usually accompanied by a weak, irregular thumping sound, but Severus had no idea what they were during the first night. Last night, however, he had developed a theory so preposterous that it might be true.

As Severus pulled the covers off himself, he felt Lily cling to him. "No," she mumbled. "It's too late..."

"I'm going to see what it is and put a stop to it," Severus said softly.

"... don't be gone for long."

Severus removed Lily's arm, leg, and head from his person and got out of bed, grabbing his wand on the bedside table and opening the door out into the hallway. The meowing was coming from the sitting room. He carefully descended the steps, not wanting to wake Lily or the children, and turned the corner. Rory was sitting atop the dining table, meowing while looking up at the ceiling with his forelimbs outstretched, as though trying to reach something. Severus flipped the light switch and looked up at the ceiling, only to find that his theory had been proven correct.

Harry, still fast asleep, was floating like a balloon, his body gentling bumping the ceiling at different angles which somehow didn't wake him. One of his legs kicked back, and Severus watched as the baby slowly moved in the opposite direction, letting out a small gurgle from his ajar mouth. Severus hurried beneath Harry and gestured with his wand to draw the latter down from up above, and it didn't take long before he was resting in his arms.

"... you're a natural flyer, aren't you, P-" Severus froze before the name left his mouth. "... aren't you, Harry?"

The two, along with Rory, went back upstairs, and Severus placed Harry back in his crib beside Neville, who was still fast asleep. He turned to Rory and said, "Next time, wake Snarky."

Rory meowed and leapt up onto a chair beside Harry's crib before settling down.

Severus returned to bed and pulled the covers over himself, drawing Lily closer so that she was once more cuddling him.

"Anything wrong?" Lily mumbled.

"It was just the cat," Severus answered, kissing her brow as he closed his eyes once more.
