Chapter 9 a Brother and Sister
Roboto was at the street market. He was thinking about getting something for Teela as a surprise. "Hello Roboto how are you?" one of the vendors asked.
"I am fine," Roboto said. "I came looking for something for Teela my sister," he said.
"Oh is it her birthday?" the vendor asked.
"No I just wanted to do something nice for her," Roboto answered.
"Well we get plenty of things to choose from," the vendor said. "I got bracelets, I got scarves, and I got necklaces," he said.
Roboto saw a bracelet Teela might like and chose it and paid for it.
"Hi Roboto," one of the kids name Hayden said.
"Hello Hayden," Roboto said.
"What are you doing?" Hayden asked.
"I was buying something for Teela to be nice to her, she is my sister after all," Roboto said.
"How can she be your sister?" Hayden asked.
"Yeah," one of the other kids said. "You're a robot and she's a human," she said.
"Yes how can you two even be family?" Hayden said then left with his friends.
Roboto was left to ponder on that. Roboto was back in the lab wondering somethings. "Everything alright Roboto?" Teela asked.
"Oh hey Teela," Roboto said. "I am just wondering if I am really your brother," he said.
"Of course your my brother," Teela said. "What would make you wonder something like that?" she asked.
"Hayden and his friends said how can I be your brother when I am robot and you and my father are not," Roboto said.
"Well Roboto it is kind of hard to explain," Teela said.
"What is going on?' Man at arms asked as Adam and Orko followed them.
"Roboto is wondering if we are really brother and sister," Teela said. "After a comment Hayden and his friends made," she said.
"I see," Man at arms said. "Roboto I think I can help with that," he said. "I will tell you the story of why I invented you," he said.
"Oh, I never heard that story," Roboto said.
"Neither have I," Orko said.
"Well sit down it may take a while," Man at arms said. "It all began when Adam and Teela were four years old," he said.
Flashback starts...
A little Adam and Teela were playing. "I found again," Teela said.
"I know but hide seek would be more fun if there was more than one person to find," Adam said.
"I agree," Teela said. "But none of the other kids like to play with us normally," she said.
"I know," Adam said.
I saw that Adam and Teela were right none of the other kids wanted to play with them. They were also right that some games were more fun to play when there were more than just two people. So I decided to build them a playmate.
Man at arms began to doing a lot of work and testing to make sure it works. He was very busy at it too. He was making sure it was turning out right. "There we go and as they grow I can update age range and size of the bot to make it easier to play with, and it will have a very human like personality," Man at arms said. "I hope it works this time." he said.
The robot started up. "Hello," the robot said. "What is this place? Where am I? Who am I?" he asked.
"I am Man at arms, and this is the royal palace of Eternia," Man at arm said. "I just built you," he said.
"Since you built me, shouldn't you name me?" the robot asked.
"Okay," Man at arms said. "I will call you Roboto," he said.
"Okay," Roboto said. "Why did you build me?" he asked.
"You are going to play with my daughter Teela and the king's son Adam," Man at arms said. "You are going to be their playmate," he said.
"Yes be playmate," Roboto said.
Roboto followed Man at arms out of the lab to where Teela and Adam were playing. "I have surprise for you both," Man at arms said. Then showed them Roboto. "This is Roboto, I built him to be your playmate," he said.
"Cool," Adam said.
"Wow," Teela said. "What kind of games can he play?" she asked.
"Many kinds and he is built to respond and play, and have personality and emotion," Man at arms said. "That way he is as life like a playmate as possible," he said.
"Wow," Adam said.
"Well then let's play," Teela said. "Come on now Roboto let's play," she said.
"What are we going to play?" Roboto asked.
"Hide and seek," Adam said.
"How do you play?" Roboto asked.
"One of us will cover our eyes and count and the other two will go hide," Adam said. "Then the one who did the counting will go find the others," he said.
"Oh," Roboto said.
They began to play and have fun. They played many games and had a lot of fun as the days passed. Adam and Teela loved their new playmate. Roboto appreciated friendship really fast. But he noticed something Teela had a father and Adam had a father and mother. All the other kids on Eternia had some type of family.
He was wondering if he had someone to call family. "Man at arms I have a question," Roboto asked.
"Okay Roboto what is it?" Man at arms said.
"What is a family?" Roboto asked.
"A family is made up of people who are related by blood, or by adoption, they all love and care about each other," Man at arms said. "They go to great lengths to help each other, they give advice, they protect each other, they teach each other, they are there for each other, and it is full of love," he said.
"Are all families the same?" Roboto asked.
"No Roboto not all families are the same," Man at arms said. "Some families are like Adam's with a mom, a dad, and their child or children," he said. "Some families are like Teela's with a child or children and one parent," he said. "Some families are just a child or children with many family members under one roof." he said. "Some families are a child or children under the care of a different relative," he said. "Some families are blended when to families with one parent with their child or children on both sides come together and make a bigger family," he said. "Every family is very special," he said.
"Oh," Roboto said.
"Why are you asking about families might I ask?" Man at arms asked.
"I am just wondering if I will ever have someone to call family," Roboto said.
"I see," Man at arms said.
Roboto got damaged the next day while playing with Adam and Teela. Man at arms had built him to have all sensations and feelings, including pain. Roboto began to cry without thinking about it because the damage hurt. Teela got her father Man at arms to help.
Man at arms brought Roboto in to be treated. "There you go that should take care of the damage," Man at arms said. "Does that feel better?" he asked.
"Yes," Roboto said. "But I don't think I want to play for a while, I am scared it might happen again," he said.
"Don't be scared about that," Man at arms said. "Getting hurt while playing happens to every child, you can still play and have fun," he said. "Just remember to be careful," he told him.
"Okay," Roboto said. Roboto soon began seeing how much Teela and Man at arms cared about him. They always told him good night when it was time for him to power down at night. They always told him good morning when he powered back up. They would make sure he was okay if he was damaged, or feeling sad, or upset in anyway. Roboto began to feel that Man at arms and Teela were his family. He was wondering if it would be okay if he could ask them if he could call them dad and sister.
Roboto came into the lab where Teela and Man at arms were. "I think of you two like family," Roboto said. "Can I call you sister Teela? And you dad Man at arms?" he asked.
"I would love that," Teela said.
"I would love that very much Roboto," Man at arm said. He had tears in his eyes, he had started to see Roboto as his son. He also knew Teela saw him as her brother. The two of them hugged Roboto.
Now they were family after that and everyone in palace celebrated.
Flashback ends.
"So you see Roboto, all those years ago I made you to be a playmate, but I ended up creating something better," Man at arms said. "I made myself a son and a brother my daughter," he said.
"I never really quite remembered that," Roboto said.
"That is because the information is deep in your memory banks," Man at arms said. "Sometimes just like with people it is hard to recall when you are that young," he said.
"So you see no matter what anyone says you are my brother," Teela said.
"Thank you," Roboto said. "I am really happy," he said. Then Roboto remembered something. "Oh yeah, I got something at the market for you Teela," he said. Then gave her the bracelet. "For the best sister in all of Eternia," he said.
"Thank you," Teela said. "You are the best robot brother ever on all of Eternia." she said hugging him.
"In today's story you saw how Roboto was wondering if both him and me were really brother and sister," Teela said. "Many of you have an adopted sibling or even a step sibling don't ever doubt that you are not siblings, even though you are not related by blood, family is really about the love you share with others." she said. "If someone you meet or know, tells you that they cannot be yours siblings because of that reason. Try not to pay them any mind and if it bothers you talk to an adult you trust," she said. "Until next time," she said.
