One warm summer day, Stef Adams Foster and her wife Lena were getting the nursery ready for their soon-to-be-born daughter, Francesca "Frankie" Quinn Adams Foster. The middle name was going to be a surprise for Callie.
"Just think, Stef, we're going to have our Frankie in a couple of weeks," Lena said to Stef.
"I'm so excited," Stef said, trying to put together a new crib and rocking chair that their older children Brandon, Callie, Jesus, Mariana, and Jude bought for them as a surprise.
"It was really sweet of the kids to buy this," Lena smiled.
"Yes, it was. With their own money."
Lena nodded, suddenly putting a hand to her stomach and letting out a slow breath.
"Are you okay, love?" Stef asked, concerned.
"Yeah, I'm fine. Just a hard kick. I wish you didn't have to go to work today."
"Don't worry, everything is going to be okay," Stef reassured her wife. The kids know what to do."
Stef had a plan if Lena was to go into labor while she was at work. Brandon was to drive Lena to the hospital in her car, and Callie was to follow with Jesus, Mariana, and Jude in Stef's car.
"I know."
Stef kissed her head. "I should get ready for work."
An hour later, the kids were all sitting down in the living room.
"We should figure out who's going to help Mama if Mom's gone when she goes into labor," Brandon said.
"Well obviously, me, Jude, and Brandon are out," said Jesus.
"Have you seen those scrubs you wear in the delivery room?" Mariana said.
"I'll do it," Callie said.
"OK, We should have a dress rehearsal," Jude said. Everyone agreed.
Later after lunch, Brandon and Lena were in Lena's car. Callie, Mariana, Jesus, and Jude were in Stef's car.
"Okay, perfect!" Mariana asked. "We're all in the right places. Jesus, why don't you get Mama's suitcase when it's time? Callie, you can call the hospital."
"Will do."
"What about me?" Jude asked.
"Judicorn, you just get to the car."
"Okay."
They practiced the drive to the hospital, then went home. Lena went upstairs to lie down, and the kids all went on their phones in the living room.
"Okay, let's see here: we have The Cat in the Hat, Green Eggs and Ham, and How the Grinch Stole Christmas. Any other books?"
"What about Curious George?" Brandon suggested.
"Okay," Callie said.
Later that afternoon, Brandon, Callie, Mariana, Jesus, and Jude went to Walmart to buy some stuff Lena could do while in the hospital. They got some books and some DVDs. Callie picked out some onesies with the Disney Princesses on them. They went home.
"Where have you troublemakers been?" Stef asked.
"We bought some stuff for Mama to do when she's in the hospital."
Callie showed her mom one of the outfits with Ariel and Snow White.
"Oh, these are adorable!" Stef exclaimed. "I can't wait to try them on her."
"Me neither."
The next afternoon, Brandon was hanging out with his girlfriend Lou. Jesus was shooting hoops with Jude in the backyard. Callie and Mariana were catching up on reruns of Beverly Hills 90210 on cable.
"I don't know about you, Mariana, but I find Steve cute."
"Dylan is cute, too," Mariana stated.
"I agree," Callie said.
"I'm kinda fond of Brandon myself." Brandon stuck his head in the living room teasing his sisters on his way into the kitchen, getting a Pepsi.
Lena came into the room. Callie noticed something was up. She was pale and looked agitated.
"What's wrong, Mama?"
"My water broke. I'm officially in labor."
Callie and Mariana looked at each other and screamed in excitement.
"I'll get the bag!" Mariana said, running into Brandon.
"That's my job. Wait, Mama's having the baby?"
"Yeah!"
"Jesus!" Brandon yelled.
Jesus and Jude came into the house. "Where's the fire?" Jesus asked.
"The baby's coming! Get her bag!"
"On it!"
"Jude, go to mine and Mariana's room and get the you-know-what," Callie instructed, carefully not exposing their surprise in front of Lena.
"Wait, who's calling the hospital?" Mariana asked with a start.
"Me! Where's the phone?" Callie asked frantically.
"Jesus! Let's go!"
Jesus ran down with the bag. "Okay, Mama, let's get you to the car."
"Brandon, go get the keys and call Mom!" Mariana exclaimed.
Everyone was talking over each other and arguing. Finally, Lena put a hand to her head and clapped her hands. "Guys!"
Everyone stopped.
"Everyone just calm down. We have plenty of time."
"Mom's not answering the phone," Brandon said, "and neither is my dad."
"Of all the days Stef chose to go to work," Lena groaned.
Callie hung up with the doctor. "Dr. Hillcroft said she'll meet us at the hospital."
Mariana realized something. "Where's Brandon and Jesus?" They heard Lena's car pulling out of the driveway.
"Laurel and Hardy left," Mariana exclaimed.
"We need to go now," Lena said.
Callie and Mariana walked Lena to Stef's car, leaving Jude to come into the living room with the bag of stuff from Walmart.
"Where is everyone?"
Brandon and Jesus were halfway to the hospital.
Don't worry, Mama, we have everything under control."
"Umm…Brandon, my name is Jesus."
Brandon looked over. "You're supposed to be with Callie, Mariana, and Jude."
"You're the one who put me in the car!" said Jesus.
Just then they saw Callie, Mariana, and Lena in Stef's Car and quickly followed. The girls got Lena to the hospital quickly, and Dr. Hillcroft examined her.
"Seven centimeters, Lena. Moving right along."
"Seven? That's pretty close. What if Stef doesn't make it?" Lena asked worriedly.
"Then one of us will be here," Callie said confidently.
In the waiting room Mariana was sitting trying to call different family members. Brandon and Jesus walked in.
"About time you bozos got here."
"Ha-ha, very funny," Jesus said.
"Umm…guys?" Brandon said, interrupting what certainly was going to be a argument between his siblings. "I think we've forgotten something. Me, you two, Callie, Mama, who are we forgetting?"
Brandon, Jesus, and Mariana looked at each other.
"JUDE!" They all exclaimed.
"Okay, me and Beethoven will go home, get Jude, and come back," Jesus said. "Mariana, you stay here."
"Aye-aye captain."
Jesus was laughing. "What's so funny?" Brandon asked.
"This is just like the episode of The Flintstones where Wilma gives birth to Pebbles."
"Okay, Fred. Let's get home to Jude."
Brandon and Jesus got home.
"We are so sorry we forgot you, bro," Brandon said as they found Jude sitting on the front steps.
"Don't worry. It's cool," Jude assured his brothers.
The three brothers took off speeding.
"Brandon, you might want to pull over," Jesus advised.
"Why?" Brandon asked, looking puzzled, until he heard sirens.
"Does that answer your question?" Jude asked.
An officer came up to the driver's window. "License and registration, sir."
Brandon handed his driver's license and registration information to the cop, not realizing who it was.
Jude piped up from the backseat one word that made Brandon's head snap up.
"Mom?"
Stef was standing outside the car holding her son's license. She did not look happy.
"Brandon, get out of the car."
Brandon stepped out and went to the back.
"Brandon Michael Foster, what were you driving 70 miles an hour?! Do you have any idea how dangerous that is?"
"Of course I do."
"Stef, what's going on?" Mike asked.
"Ask your son."
"B, are you kidding me right now?" Mike asked.
"Dad, I'm sorry. But I think when you hear why I'm speeding, you'll both forgive me."
"This better be good," Stef replied.
"Mama is in labor."
Stef's entire demeanor changed from angry mother to frantic wife. "WHAT?!"
"That's why I was speeding. She's at the hospital with Callie and Mariana, and we…kinda forgot Jude."
"You forgot your BROTHER?!"
"It was really crazy, we were all panicking. I grabbed Jesus and took off. I didn't realize my goof up until we were halfway to the hospital, then we saw Callie driving your car with Mama and Mariana and we didn't realize we forgot Jude until we got to the Hospital then me and Jesus went back to get him and you know the rest."
"It's okay, Mom, really," Jude said, popping out of the car. "I know they didn't mean to."
"Okay, okay, let's go, but first, Brandon, I have something for you."
"That's not necessary."
"Oh, trust me, I think it is," Stef handed Brandon a piece of paper. "You have 21 days from now to pay this ticket and your siblings won't be helping pay for it."
Brandon sighed. "Yes, ma'am."
"Stef, come on, I'll drive," Mike urged. "B, we'll follow behind you. And no more speed demon, you hear me?"
Brandon nodded, then hurried back to his car. Mike kicked on his siren, and they raced to the hospital.
…
At the hospital, Dr. Hillcroft examined her once more. "Lena, you're fully dilated. It's time to deliver."
"But Stef's not here."
"Don't worry Mama, I'll help you," Callie said, smiling. "After all, I've been a part of this pregnancy as much as Mom has been, if not a little more."
Lena was thinking about how Callie had taken Lena to most of her Lamaze classes and went with Lena when she had her hospital tour a few weeks ago. She really was ready for this.
"Callie, you go with the nurse and get a gown."
A few minutes later, Callie came back into the room wearing blue scrubs, a matching cap, mask, and gloves.
"Callie, you take Lena's hand and allow her to squeeze your hand and keep her calm," Dr Hillcroft said.
"Okay," Callie nodded her head. She took Lena's hand. "Ready, Mama?"
Lena nodded. "Ready."
…
Meanwhile Brandon, Jesus, and Jude went back to the waiting room.
"Where have you three been while Mama is giving birth?!" Mariana asked.
"It's a long story," Brandon mumbled.
"What did you idiots do?"
"We got pulled over."
"What?!"
"It gets worse. We got pulled over-"
"By Mom," Jesus admitted, his head down.
Just then, Stef ran in. "Where's Mama?"
"In room 205 with Callie."
Callie came in.
"Mama had the baby. 7 pounds, two ounces."
Stef smiled. "Are they okay?"
"Yeah, Mama will want to see you," Callie said.
"Cal, what happened to your hand?" Stef asked, noticing a Bandage around her hand.
"Mama-" Callie started to say.
"Enough said. I did the same thing to Mike when Brandon was born. You get dressed and get that hand to X-ray. I'll go see Mama."
Stef cracked open the door. "Hey, baby."
Lena looked up from where she was holding Frankie. Tears filled her eyes.
"You're here."
Stef dropped her bag. "Of course." She hurried to the bed, putting her arm around Lena. "How are you feeling?"
"Tired, but really happy."
"She's so beautiful." Stef felt a tear escape her eye.
"Callie was really great. Although I'm afraid I may have broken her hand."
"She's getting X-rayed," Stef replied.
"Good. And on that note…STEFANIE MARIE ADAMS FOSTER, where have you been?!" Lena said, frustrated.
"I'm sorry, I'm sorry," Stef said, kissing her head. "I didn't have my phone on."
"What were you doing?"
"Giving a ticket to our son."
"WHAT?"
"Apparently, the kids forgot Jude."
"They WHAT?!"
"I know."
"Oh, poor Jude."
"I think he's okay."
"Good. Speaking of which…"
"Hmm?"
"Go get them. I want them to meet their sister. By the way, Stef, where's Callie?"
"She's in the nurse's station, changing out of the scrubs she wore after she finishes in Radiology."
"God, I owe that girl big time."
Stef, Mike, Brandon, Jesus, Mariana and Jude were in Lena's room.
"Me and Jesus are sorry we forgot Jude," Brandon said.
"It's okay," Lena assured him. "Besides, I also forgot about him when we left the house, so I think the only punishment for you is you have to pay for the ticket Mom issued you."
"I think that's fair," Stef agreed.
"Me too," Mike said. "Besides, I went faster when your mom was in labor with you."
Stef nudged her ex husband in the ribs. "Don't encourage them!"
Callie came in holding her new sister. "Hey, did anyone here order a baby?"
Callie handed Frankie to Lena.
"How's your hand?"
"Just a sprain."
Lena sighed in relief. "Good."
"So…what's her name?" Mariana asked.
"Everyone, this is Francesca Quinn Adams Foster. Frankie for short."
"Quinn," Callie said
"Surprise."
"That's my middle name."
"It is. I told you she wouldn't catch on," joked Stef.
Callie was crying. "That's the nicest thing anyone's ever done for me. Thank you."
Callie hugged her moms.
Callie pulled out the camera Brandon, Jesus, and Mariana bought for her when she was adopted. "I'll be right back," Callie said as she left the room.
"Where is she going?" asked Lena. Stef shrugged her shoulders.
One minute later, Callie came back into the room with a nurse. "Can you take a picture of us?"
The nurse took a picture of Stef sitting next to Lena with Frankie in Lena's arms, with Jesus and Brandon standing next to Mike and Callie between Mariana and Jude.
Mike took Brandon, Mariana, Jesus, and Jude home. Stef and Lena asked Callie to stay back.
"Mama and I were thinking, you've been a massive help to Mama, not only today but through this entire pregnancy, so we decided to ask you to be Frankie's Guardian. So, if anything would happen to us you would get custody of Frankie."
"I think that sounds great," Callie nodded, smiling with tears in her eyes.
Brandon, Jesus, Mariana, and Jude went home that evening. Callie was staying the night at the Hospital with her moms to help keep an eye on Frankie.
"I can't believe you, Jesus, and Jude were speeding and, of all the cops in San Diego, our mom pulled you over and gave you a ticket," Mariana said, trying hard not to gloat.
"Don't forget about my dad," Brandon said sullenly.
"Yeah," Jesus said, clapping a hand on his shoulder. "You've had a bad day."
"Guys! We have a baby sister! Let's celebrate!" Mariana exclaimed.
"Let's order pizza and rent a movie," Jude suggested.
"Done," Brandon replied.
They were walking into the kitchen when Jesus asked, "So how much is that ticket setting you back?"
…
Later that evening, Mike came back to Lena's room.
"I just wanted to check on the new parents."
We're fine," Stef replied.
"Well, it appears you both have your own mini mes," Mike stated.
Stef and Lena looked confused. Mike moved his finger to have the moms turn around to see Callie asleep on the couch in Lena's hospital room with Frankie sleeping on her chest.
"Oh," Stef breathed.
"That's so sweet," Lena agreed. "They are going to be bonded for life."
