A/N: Hey, please review and tell me what you think of the story or how I can make it better. I'm gonna try to keep posting every Friday. Sorry for all the mistakes, I wrote this a few months ago and haven't read it again.
Chapter 4
The night is pretty uneventful, you wake up once, but only to get a blanket from the closet and to use the bathroom. The next time you wake up someone is shaking you and whispering your name, "Y/N, wake up."
You open your eyes to see Newt looking down at you. He smiles and he looks so cute, you can't help but beam back up at him. As you open your mouth to greet him he puts his forefinger to his lips to tell you to be quiet. You nod and he whispers, "I want to show you something before the wake up."
He stands up and motions for you to follow him. You get up and tiptoe after him, being careful not to step on anyone. The other Gladers are tightly packed against each other. It's like a minefield. Newt leads you to the closest wall. When you get there he pulls some vines out of the way to reveal a small window. The glass is thick, grubby, and difficult to see out of.
"One of them should be along any second now," he says.
"One of what?" you ask.
"A Griever."
"What's that?"
"Grievers are the creatures that live in the maze. That's why the doors close at night, that's when they're the most active."
You think about your thoughts yesterday and about feeling claustrophobic. Suddenly, you're glad that the doors close. "There's one!" he suddenly cries out, as he points out of the window. You look through to see a bulbous creature, as tall as an average man. It has pulsing skin that looks like it's slimy and gooey. You imagine touching it and shudder at the thought. It has patches where strange hair seems to be growing. There are spikes that come in and out of its skin, you wonder what they're for. The Griever also has many odd instruments sticking out of it at random, connected to mechanical arms. You see a claw that opens and closes as the creature stands there. There's a light that roams around at random with no clear direction. You also see something that might be a needle, this is strange to you and you decide to ask Newt about it later. For now, you're looking at the creature and its odd behaviour. It has a strange pattern of movement. All its appendages fold into the body and it spins forward with a whirring sound. Then it stops and its tools come out again, the light moving around as if it's hoping to find something. Or someone. You shudder at the thought, but it might be true.
"What's that needle thing?" You ask.
"Oh, that's what they use to sting you."
"Sting you?"
"Yes. Grievers are menacing but when they attack you they usually don't kill you. They sting you then run away. Except at night. They kill you then. No one survives a night in the maze and the bodies are never found."
"What happens if one stings you?"
"You have to try to get back to the glade as quickly as possible so we can inject you with the Grief serum. You then go through the Changing-"
"What's the Changing?"
"It's like a coma for a few days and I've heard it hurts. And some people say you get some memories back. I haven't gone through it myself so I don't know. People who get stung don't like talking about it."
"Why do you call it the Changing?"
"Because when it's over people change, they're different. No one really likes to be around them."
"Is the real world that bad?"
"I don't know. There's a theory that the Creators are implanting fake memories. Everything here is ruled by the Creators. We don't know what to trust as real."
I only stare at Newt, confusion more than likely clear on my face. He chuckles, shakes his head, and says, "It will start to make more sense as you spend more time here. Let's eat breakfast, I'm starving. By the way how's your arm?"
He gently grabs me by the arm and starts leading me to where we got the sandwiches the day before.
