Jamie padded out into the living room and frowned as he saw that his wife was missing. She had told him that she was going to tuck Amelia in for the night and then join him for bed. But, that was almost an hour ago.
It had been quite a surprise for him to arrive home and see little Amelia sitting quietly at their dinner table coloring a picture. They had looked at each other curiously for a long moment before Eddie walked in from the kitchen and gave an explanation to her presence.
His heart broke for the little girl and he agreed to let her stay for as long as needed. He attempted to engage with her but Amelia seemed weary so he backed off. He couldn't help but notice how attached she seemed to Eddie already and knew his wife was feeling the same way about her.
He scanned the living room quickly then walked back toward their guest room where Amelia was staying. The door was still open and it was there where he was greeted by the sweetest sight he'd ever seen. Eddie and Amelia were laying together in the bed, both fast asleep. Their heads were together and Eddie's fingers were threaded through Amelia's long tresses. He leaned against the doorway and smiled, suddenly picturing Eddie doing the same thing with their own child someday.
Motherhood was a subject that she had always gone back and forth on over the years. Of course, he had always wanted to become a father someday but he would never push it onto her if she didn't want to. He loved her and being with her was more important than anything else for him. But, he wasn't afraid to admit that seeing her with Amelia was starting to stir those feelings up in him and from the way he watched his wife interact with her, he knew they were coming up for her too.
He contemplated on waking Eddie up so she could sleep comfortably in their bed but didn't have to as she was already looking over at him.
"Hi," she whispered with a small yawn.
"Hey," he smiled, quietly walking over to her as she sat up. "I was looking for you. Is everything okay?"
She gave a nod, "Yeah… she wanted me to stay for a little while. I was going to come back after she fell asleep but… I didn't feel right leaving her."
He tucked a couple of loose hairs behind her ear, "I get it. I would feel the same way. Did you want to come to bed?"
She let out a small sigh as she looked back at Amelia. She reached out and sweetly smoothed the small worry wrinkle in the middle of her forehead. With that, Jamie knew what her answer was.
He reached over and pulled the computer chair from the desk over toward the bed. He gestured for Eddie to lay back down.
"What are you doing?" she asked curiously, turning back toward him from facing Amelia.
"If you're staying, I'm staying too," he stated simply, lifting his legs onto the bed next to hers and reclining back into the chair. He reached back and grabbed the small blanket that was laying on the desk behind him, then pulled it over his and her legs.
Eddie smiled gently at him. She sat up again and pulled him over for a quick kiss on the lips. "Thank you."
Then, she laid back down and closed her eyes next to Amelia, who was still sleeping. He relaxed back into the chair again. Then, as he was dozing off, he heard Eddie calling out for him.
"Jamie?" He opened his eyes and looked over at her.
"Yeah?" he responded. "You okay?"
She flashed a sleepy smile at him, one that was usually reserved just for him and he knew it.
"I love you," she whispered.
He reached over and patted her leg affectionately, "I love you too, hon. Now go to sleep."
She nodded and closed her eyes. He looked over at Amelia first and then Eddie to make sure that both of them were asleep before finally going to sleep himself.
