There was a distinctive snap in the October air as Jaycelynn Trudeau, a young woman with bronze skin, black hair and shimmering hazel eyes, skipped beside her boyfriend. Katsuya chuckled as he squeezed her hand. The red, gold and brown leaves crunched under their feet. Wind whipped through their hair. Despite the chill in the air, the two couldn't have felt any warmer than they did right now.
Jaycelynn ran her thumb across Katsuya's knuckles. "Do you think the others would be down for it?"
The blond shrugged. "I don't see why not, Jay. Though... I gotta be real," he sighed. "I'm a lil' freaked out about it, y'know?"
The brunette snickered. "It will be alright, Joey!"
It was a nickname born out of a horrid mispronunciation of his last name. He didn't dare let anyone else refer to him as that. Jay just happened to have pretty girlfriend privilege. Hiroto Honda, his best friend besides Yugi, made the mistake of calling him that once. It was a joke. A joke that didn't land very well. What did land was Katsuya's fist against Honda's jaw before breaking out into a full on brawl between the two friends.
"It's not like we'll be performing creepy occult rituals or anything. We're just going to watch scary movies and eat junk like usual... We just happen to be dressed up in costumes."
He sighed. "Just don't let Bakura pick the movies again, alright? I still have freaky dreams about that last ones."
"Faces of Death or Guinea Pig Two?"
"Uh... Yeah?"
They both laughed.
Eventually, they reached the school. Jay chattered about Halloween, a holiday that wasn't really a thing in Japan. He thought about how she practically vibrated nonstop since end of September and October began. He didn't really get it. The best time for scary movies and ghost stories was in the summer, what with Obon and everything. He didn't care for that summer tradition either. It just gave him the creeps! It wasn't as if there was a lack of candy to go around either. Still, the holiday and season really excited his girlfriend. It was hard to not catch at least a little of that infectious energy.
After switching their shoes, they headed to their classroom. Ever since Katsuya started to stay at Jaycelynn's place, much to her grandfather's chagrin, he didn't have to worry about being late for class. She simply wouldn't let him! The door slid open to reveal a half-full classroom. Huddled in the corner of the class, there was their group of friends; Anzu Mazaki, Ryou Bakura, Hiroto Honda, Yugi Mutou and Akane Yoshie, a semi-recent transfer in like Jaycelynn was who happened to be her best friend.
Akane was a tall redhead standing at about five foot nine. Outside of class, she wore big blocky heels that gave her even more height which intimidated a lot of guys. Not that it mattered anyway. She had her eyes on one man; Seto Kaiba, allegedly a childhood friend of hers. At first, it was hard to believe. Kaiba having friends? Especially with someone as fun-loving and bold as Akane? It was impossible! Still, maybe that was what made the two such a good couple. Akane simply didn't take anyone's shit, especially not The Seto Kaiba's. Though, it probably made sense that the two had a history together what with her running the rival media company, Yoshie Enterprises. The conglomerate dealed with toys, game accessories and "knock-offs" of expensive Kaiba Corp technology that let people be able to play Duel Monsters 'the exciting way' without having to pay an arm and a leg at it. Of course, it came with the price of not having as amazing graphics but nonetheless, the Yoshie Enterprises' Battle Brace was a success.
"There they are," Yugi said with a wave.
A smile spread itself across Jay's lips as she charged forward with sparkling eyes. Once she reached Yugi and Ryou's desks—the two had been pushed together to form a bigger 'dueling arena' for their current match—she slammed her hands on the surface. The impact caused the Duel Monsters card to shift slightly. "Oops! Sorry!"
"It's fine," Ryou murmured. "It's not like you flipped my Man-Eater Bug."
"As long as it's not Destiny Board again..." Yugi teased.
"Speaking of... I activate my trap card, Destiny Board!"
"Oh jeez."
The group laughed at Yugi's misfortune, though it was highly likely that he'd pull through in the end thanks to he and Yami's skill with games in general. Jaycelynn gently peeled her hands from the desk as Katsuya wrapped an arm around her shoulders and pulled her into a side hug. The girl squealed in delight as his lips brushed against her cheek. Honda sighed as he leaned over and swatted the back of Katsuya's head for the breach of the 'No PDA' contract. "Knock it off, lover boy."
"Jeez!" Katsuya huffed as he tried to take a swing at the brunet and missed. He rolled his eyes as he motioned towards Jaycelynn. "Didja tell 'em yet?"
"Tell us what?" asked Anzu.
"Don't tell me..." Akane jumped in with a smirk on her lips. She closed her eyes and furrowed her distinctive brows together as she pretended to think. Then, she snapped her fingers and green eyes wide open. "You're eloping."
The couple sputtered as the rest of the group, save for Ryou, tittered in response.
"Alright, tell us what's really going on in that noggin of yours, Jayce," Akane continued.
"Thanks," Jaycelynn said with a flip of her hair. "Do you guys have plans on Halloween?"
"Hallo..."
"Ween?"
Ryou blinked and smiled. "It's a holiday mostly celebrated in the west. If I recall correctly... it was a Pagan festival started in Ireland. It was meant to symbolize the end of the harvest season. Allegedly, the boundary between this world and the spirit world weakened..."
Katsuya shuddered before slamming his hands over his ears. "Iiiiiii don't wanna hear it!"
Ryou rolled his eyes. "The people celebrating it would offer food to the spirits so that they and the livestock would survive the winter. The souls of the dead were also thought to return home. Eventually, it became common place to dress up, perform plays and go from home to home asking for—"
"Yeah! Trick or treating! We go from house to ask in costumes to ask for candy," Jaycelynn interrupted with a clap of her hands. "Though, that's not what I had in mind. We'd just annoy a lot of people here."
"Then what do you have planned?" Honda asked.
"I was thinking we'd have a party! Nothing too crazy from our regular hangouts. We carve a pumpkin—" She paused to see the confused look of almost everyone's faces, save for Ryou, of course. "Come on, you guys have to know what a jack-o-lantern is! We carve faces into pumpkins, put a lil' candle inside and use it for decorations."
"...And to ward off evil spirits," Ryou teased as he stared right at Joey.
"Shut up!"
Snickering, Jaycelynn continued. "We all dress up in costumes as well."
"Any kind of costume?" Yugi asked.
"Yeah! I mean, its tradition to dress up 'scary' but it's super commercialized anyway. Dress up however you want. Treat it like a school festival."
"Cool!" Yugi beamed. "Is there anything else we should know about?"
Jay tilted her head from side to side. "Uhhh... We watch scary movies."
Ryou's chocolatey eyes lit up.
The brunette pointed towards her childhood friend and booped him on the nose. "No snuff films."
"Those weren't snuff films!" Ryou huffed as everyone stared at him incredulously. "...They were just thought to be snuff films."
Jay rolled her eyes before crossing her arms. "Anyway—"
The door slid open to reveal Ryuji Otogi and his beau, Momoe Yukimura, tangled in each other's arms and sucking each other's faces. The members of Class 3D grimaced. Momoe was a woman of above average height with a very curvaceous body that had unfortunately gotten her a nasty reputation. Her hair was short and brown, save for her hot pink bangs that framed her face that also got her in trouble with the teachers. Slowly, the two lovers pulled away. Deep pink lipstick decorated Otogi's lips and jawline. A smirk spread itself across the brunet's lips as he leaned in to steal another kiss from Momoe, only for a classmate to throw a shoe at the couple.
"Alright, alright!" Otogi hissed as he pulled away from the snickering brunette and wrapped his arm around her curvy waist. His green eyes lit up. "Hey guys."
The gang waved him over and he and Momoe made their way towards the group.
"I know you're just trying to make me jealous but you gotta tone down the face sucking, you two," Akane teased.
Momoe playfully swatted at the redhead with a roll of her eyes. "Whatever."
The two young women snickered. Otogi leaned towards Akane and waggled his eyebrows, "You know my offer still stands, Miss Yoshie. Ditch Kaiba and shack up with us. We got plenty of room."
"Oh, shut up, Ryu-chan," Momoe said with a playful shove to her boyfriend's shoulder. "Anyway. You guys looked like you were up to something. Another deadly tournament on a remote island?"
Yugi laughed airily. "No, Jaycelynn was talking about a Halloween party."
"Halloween? Like that weird holiday in American movies?" she asked before looking over at the North American Queen of Games. "Am I right?"
"Basically, yeah," Jay laughed. "I'm trying to figure out if I should bother organizing a party but these guys don't seem to know what the heck I'm talking about!"
Otogi chuckled. "Well, if you'll have us... We'd be happy to come by. You know, that offer to Akane also extends to you, Jaycelynn."
Katsuya narrowed his eyes. "Shut up! She's perfectly fine with me, I'll have ya know!"
The gang laughed.
"So. We're all good for dressing up, watching schlocky movies, eating junk and whatever else?" Jay asked as she leaned against her boyfriend to make him feel a little better. She even took his hand in hers and gave it a tight squeeze for extra measure.
"Sure!" the rest of the group cheered.
"I'm curious..." Ryou murmured. "Does everyone trick or treat in North America? Or is it a thing for children? Movies set around this time typically show children partaking in that tradition. Is there something for teens and adults?"
Jay rested her other hand on her chin as she thought for a moment. "Well... There's Halloween parties like we have. Others usually pull pranks like throwing rotten eggs at houses, squashing jack-o-lanterns, throwing toilet paper everywhere... But, I doubt you guys wanna do that... right?"
Everyone nodded.
"Sometimes some people hold haunted houses like you guys do during school festivals. Oh! The haunted houses at small carnivals or theme parks are amazing! Like at Universal Studios, they decorate the whole park and have scare actors running around and tons of haunted houses! They're super intense and make you feel like you're really in danger! It's crazy!"
Yugi shifted in his seats. "I... I dunno if I could go to one of those."
Jay blinked. "Huh? Are they too much?"
He shrugged. Anzu, Honda and Katsuya grew quiet as memories started to creep into their minds. Images of flashing lights and the icy bite of metal around their limbs and hyper realistic monsters played in their minds. "...It'd remind me of Death-T."
Akane blinked. She turned towards Yugi with an intense look in her eye was Jay simply tilted her head to the side quizzically. "Death-T?" the two girls asked at the same time.
Yugi rubbed his arms. "It was right when the first Kaibaland opened."
"Wasn't it the reason why it opened at all?" Anzu asked.
"I... I think so. This was when things between Kaiba and I were... not great."
"You mean, they're great now?" Jay teased only to be silenced by the heavy tension that hung in the air. "S-sorry, go on, Yugi."
He shot her a half-hearted smile. "It's alright. Kaiba had found out about my grandpa's Blue Eyes White Dragon and tried to steal it from him. I... Well, Yami dueled him. He got inspired by the Shadow Game he played with Yami and created the technology that we use now for Duel Monsters."
Jaycelynn blinked. She knew Kaiba had created the technology, because, no duh, but to know that it was because of Yugi? It shocked her to her core.
"He then built Kaibaland specifically to get revenge on me and Yami," Yugi muttered as he stroked his Millenium Puzzle. Unseen to the rest of the group, Yami's apparition appeared beside him. His hand rested on Yugi's shoulder as he told his story. "It had a section that had five floors. Each floor had a deadly game designed to... to end our lives. Jounouchi, Honda, Honda's nephew, Jouji, and Anzu had all been dragged into it. Obviously, we made it out okay but..."
Katsuya shuddered. "I still get nightmares about that creepy train ride!"
"I'm surprised you were awake long enough to remember it!" Honda teased, though there was a definite weight hanging from his words that made them shake.
Katsuya shot a glare at his friend. "Hey, at least I got to kick major ass later!"
Anzu chuckled. "That's true. We all got moments to shine."
As the group reminisced, Akane turned away and headed towards the door. Her eyebrows knitted themselves together as her lips pursed together in a hard line. She had heard rumours about the supposedly deadly games at Kaibaland but never expected them to be true. There was a darkness that hung around Seto when they reunited. Did he really have the will and power to commit such an atrocity against his classmates? Especially over something as trivial as Duel Monsters? Her nails dug into her palms as she sucked in a shaky breath. She knew how important the game was to him. Was it really so important to him that he'd try to end lives over it?
The door slid open to reveal the man himself, Seto Kaiba.
"Set... Seto," she muttered.
Green eyes met his intense blue ones.
"Akane." His voice was low and cool as usual. He adjusted the collar of his uniform. "Class is about to start. Where do you think you're going?"
Words were caught in the redhead's throat as she tried to think. A sigh escaped her before she looked up at him with a smirk."Just needed to get some needed air before Jenga-sensei comes in."
"Well, don't let me stop you."
The brunet stepped aside to let his girlfriend pass. Hesitantly, she made her way out the door. The tittering of their classmates filled the room as the billionaire made his way to his seat without a word.
"Ay! Moneybags is here to grace us with his presence!" Katsuya announced.
Jay blinked. Fury flashed in her hazel eyes as she spun around on her heel and stomped towards Kaiba's desk. The two had a history, a brief one, but a history nonetheless. Funnily enough, he was one of the first sort-of friends she made in Domino. He recognized her talent and name from the North American Duel Monsters tournament and the fact that she had been crowned the 'North American Queen of Games'. At least, up until Bandit Keith had took the title of North American champion away from her. She knew things were tense between Yugi's friends and him. She even partook in some of that before she and Katsuya got together. Despite the obvious distance that grew between them since her relationship with the blond started, Jaycelynn held a soft spot for the guy. He was standoffish and cold but he had welcomed her into his incredibly small circle... Plus, it helped that he knew English like Ryou did.
Her hands slammed against his desk as she got up in his face. Her warm breath tickled his skin but he didn't flinch nor react.
"Can I help you?" he finally asked after a long staring contest that he, of course, won.
"How could you do that?! Death-T?! Over Blue Eyes White Dragon?!"
He grimaced. Slowly, his eyes closed as he breathed in deeply through his nose. "Look..."
"There's no excuse!"
"Jaycelynn..." Yugi murmured as he got up from his chair. "It's fine. Really. It's in the past."
"N-no! I... I can't just..." she bit her lip as she tried to formulate a thought. "I knew you could be a petty jerk but this takes the cake, Seto! I can't believe—!"
Her words were cut off by someone grabbing her wrist. Blinking, she turned towards him, Yugi... No, Yami. His eyes were sharper than Yugi's and his hair strangely took on a more reddish hue. He gently squeezed her wrist. Something panged inside of Jaycelynn's chest as she was hit with a wave of calm. There was no other way to put it. It was a strange, sombre kind of calm that only the most powerful of royalty could force upon its people. She swallowed.
"...I'm sorry."
Kaiba slowly blinked. "Whatever," he muttered as he got out of his seat and headed to the door. He didn't need to answer for his past actions. They were in the past.
"...You know..." Jay continued. "You could use Kaibaland for good instead of weird shit like that!"
"...I'll keep that in mind."
With that, Seto Kaiba left the classroom right when class began. Akane blinked as the door slid open and she watched as her boyfriend left the building. She swallowed as she reached out to him but he paid her no mind, too caught up in his frustration to notice her.
After classes ended, Akane rushed out the door and greeted her assistant, Jirou, at the school gates. She slid into the company vehicle. "Take me to Kaiba Corp."
Soon, she made it to her boyfriend's company. She was greeted by his assistants and employees who offered her refreshments and to accompany her to Seto's office. Politely, she declined and made her way to the top floor. She swiped her personal card key to open the office's door.
Seto stood at the window, his back facing her, as he talked into his cellphone. He blinked as the doors swiped open. "I'll call you back. Arrange for Otogi to meet me tomorrow," he muttered before clicking the phone shut and turning towards her. He sighed. "I can assume that you're here to lecture me too?"
Akane shook her head. Confidently, she strutted into the office and sat on the edge of his over-sized desk. "Nah. Knowing Yami's powers... You probably dealt with enough," she said with a faint smile. "Anyway... I dunno if you wanna see her after today but... Jaycelynn is holding a Halloween party. Wanna be my plus one?"
He shook his head. "I have plans."
"Oh, come on. I'm sure Kaiba Corp can go one day without its CEO working himself to death."
He laughed through his nose. "No. I have big plans for Halloween," he muttered before pulling out a series of envelopes seemingly out of thin air. A smirk split itself across his face as he handed one to the redhead. "You're invited too."
Blinking, Akane plucked the envelope from his fingers. "It's not another tournament is it? You know I'm not about to embarrass myself just so you and Yugi can have another pissing match."
"Just open it."
Rolling her eyes, she did just that. Inside was an intricately decorated card that had Dark Magician Girl sitting on top of Pumpkin King of Ghosts.
'Kaiba Corp invites you to its exclusive Halloween horror event, Revenge of Death-T.'
Akane dropped the card. "Seto... You can't be serious."
His smile widened. "Deadly."
