"Hey Church, may I interrupt you for a moment?" asks Felix, walking past the two bickering men without hesitation. His muscles are tensed to the limit. Each movement is precisely calculated. One word from Church would be enough to take out everyone around him. Only Church is a problem. How do you extinguish an A.I.? Never mind, that's a problem for later.
It's showtime. No one can see his smug grin under his helmet. Felix tries to keep his tone as friendly as possible. None of the others are close enough to hear him, so he can say whatever he wants, to win Church over "Hey, I can understand you. My teammates are idiots too. I've been here less than a week and I can't wait to be out of here."
Getting Church on his side is easy for Felix. He has had a lot of similar people wrapped around his finger in the past. They all had one thing in common. They were all full of themselves and thought they were better than him. However, this belief, that no one can match their abilities, makes it an easy game for Felix. To Felix's satisfaction, Church already seems to be taking the bait.
"Really?" asks Church incredulously. "Are those idiots as bad as that one!" asks Chruch, nodding towards Caboose.
Caboose, who didn't hear what was said, waves. "Hello Church!" he calls out. Then he whispers almost worshipfully: "Church has noticed me. He knows I'm the best."
Felix rolls his eyes in annoyance. But now he can't afford to relax, because the most important part of his persuasion strategy is about to begin. He not only has to make a sympathetic impression on Church, but also give him a false sense of superiority.
"Okay, maybe not quite that bad. Actually, I don't think I'd want to be in your shoes. If I was you, I don't think I'd last a day with those two bickering bastards around." Felix says and points to the two blues, who are already having their next verbal argument. In his opinion, he has it much worse. Church only has to deal with two idiots, while he has four.
"Finally someone understands me. I never thought I'd say that to a Red." Church replies and leans back, visibly satisfied.
Felix knows that the sucking up part of his plan is finally over. He's done enough to gain Church's trust. At least for a moment. Now it's time to get to the point. "But what was that again? You mentioned reinforcements. Oh dear, I hope it's not another idiot. We already have enough of them," asks Felix.
Church hesitates briefly, then answers. "She's a freelancer." His tone sounds somewhat irritated. But Felix isn't sure if he detects a hint of sadness in it. Or is it perhaps insecurity? But he's probably just imagining it, isn't he?
"Damn, so it's Carolina after all," thinks Felix. His hand slowly moves to his gun. He thinks about who he should shoot first.
But then Church continues. "Oh, by the way... she's my ex"
Felix lets out an unbelieving laugh. Oops... Sometimes he just can't keep his mouth shut. No matter how hard he tries.
"Wait, what?" Felix thinks in horror. "How can it be that this loser guy was dating a freelancer. And then Carolina too. She's far too strong for him."
"Hey, stop making fun of me. Why is everyone so surprised that I used to have a girlfriend?" he grumbles and crosses his arms.
"Wait what, noooo... That's completely impossible... I thought I was the ladies' man here. You must be lying!" Tucker shouts. His voice is shrill and in disbelief. For a moment, Felix wonders how Tucker heard the conversation from over there. Why does he bother to question everything over and over again? Everything to do with the red and blue is strange. And Tucker is always the first to interrupt, when someone talks about girls. It's like he has a girl radar.
"Oh not you too," hisses Church. "But well... let me tell you a story. Let's see if you still don't believe me afterward."
"Oh a story? But it's not bedtime yet. But ok. A nap won't hurt either." Caboose says and lies down on the ground next to Church. He uses his arm as a pillow. It dosnt look very comfortable but Caboose dosnt seem to mind.
Even Donut also joins them. It seems like he finally got over his fear of ghosts, after Felix wasnt attacked by church after all this time. He still stays a bit behing Felix though. Only Sarge remains standing at a distance, shaking his head in displeasure. Felix wonders, if Sarges hatred of the blues is really that deep, maybe he can make use of it later.
Church raises his arms and begins to speak in a dramatic voice. "I was stationed in a cold place. Pretty much in the middle of nowhere."
"And where was that?" asks Tucker, apparently already trying to expose Church's story as a lie.
"I don't know anymore. Why does it fucking matter?" screams Church.
"I knew it you slimy liar. No one gets a girlfriend before Tucker." Mumbles Tucker quietly.
Church pretends he didn't hear and continues. "I've been there a while and was just talking to Jimmy. We were talking about how cold it was. But then she shows up."
"Was she hot? Bow chicka wow wow!" Tucker exclaims.
"I'm sure she was. Church is only befriended with the best and most handsome" caboose replies tiredly and yawns. "A great story Church..." he mumbles and begins to snore.
"Hmm, it's probably better if he doesn't hear any more. Because now it's getting very intense." Church says, shrugging his shoulders. " And then it happened. She had camouflaged herself with a cloaking module. Nobody saw her coming. But then a terrible scream echoed through the valley. When we looked, one of our men was lying on the ground. It was terrible. There was actually nothing left of him, just a bloody puddle and a few boot prints. The poor guy was just stomped flat."
Donut whimpers and tries to grab Felix's hand. "Why is this a scary story? I thought this was going to be a juicy story about relationship drama."
"Don't be a scaredy-cat, Red. Just wait and see when you meet her in person soon. If you behave like that, she'll turn you into goo too." Church laughs grimly. "Well, that's how it was... Anyway, it was over quicker than most people could react. Only a few minutes had passed, but everyone was dead. I was the only one left."
Felix is confused. Has Carolina been this cruel in the past? He's not sure if Church is lying. "But why did she let you live? Don't get me wrong, but I thought you were her ex. Well, I wouldn't let my ex-partner get away with anything. I'd slowly tear them apart until there was nothing left." Felix thinks of Locus. That damn traitor. He wants nothing more than to hear Locus beg for his life while he stands victorious over him. But now is not the time to indulge in revenge fantasies.
"I don't know why. I still wonder to this day. The last time I saw her, a few years ago, she wouldn't have hesitated." Church wonders.
"Damn Church, what have you done to make her so angry. That wouldn't have happened to me. The ladies love me." Tucker says and laughs.
"I'd really like to tell you my story, but somehow I'm not feeling so well." Mumbles Church. His ghostly silhouette begins to blur. "I think I need to go back to the afterlife and recharge. It's damn tiring to linger in the world of the living. Here's my last warning: don't try to fight her. None of you stand a chance. Maybe Felix... No, probably not." His voice gets softer and softer.
"Wait, but who is your crazy girlfriend anyway?" Felix shouts. It still doesn't have the answers he needs.
"Her name is Tex."
With this last sentence Church is gone.
