Shizuka shivered as she and her girlfriend, Mai, made their way towards the cafe. She was bundled up in pale pink trench coat that Mai had given her and a scarf that her grandmother made while Mai confidently strutted in a mini skirt, corset and a bordello coat. Shizuka's eyebrows knitted together. How could she stay so warm? Maybe she was just faking it though.
Mai seemed to be everything that Shizuka wasn't in her eyes. Strong, driven, beautiful and sassy in ways that the brunette wished she could be. However, the blonde had to reassure her that she was all those things and more, even if she didn't believe in it herself yet. "Even big girls like me have to cry sometimes, babe," she whispered one night before they went to bed.
A chuckle escaped the blonde before she was pulled into a side hug. "We're almost there."
"How are you not freezing?"
"I think you're just sensitive to the cold, babe."
"Maybe," Shizuka said with a laugh.
They made their way into the cafe. Tucked away in the corner was a familiar group of girls who waved them over; Jaycelynn, Anzu, Momoe and Akane. Admittedly, she wasn't the most familiar with Momoe. She was pretty new to the friend group after all, only recently coming into the circle by dating Otogi. Shizuka liked Otogi. Not in the way that he wished she did but he was a fine guy. She was glad to see him with someone that liked him in earnest. Everyone but Anzu seemed to be neatly paired up with someone. Oh, if Shizuka had her way... Anzu and Yugi would've been together ages ago!
Giggling, Shizuka plopped herself in the chair next to Jaycelynn, her brother's girlfriend, while Mai sat next to her. It was probably for the best. Things were still a bit weird between the Canadian and Mai. Admittedly, Shizuka understood that. She also felt a little weird when Mai and Katsuya were in the same room together. It came with the territory of dating your brother's old crush. A tension hung in the air between them. Did she get in the way of destiny by confessing to Mai back then? She wasn't sure.
Jaycelynn leaned over and gave Shizuka a hug. "It's super nice seeing you again!"
Shizuka giggled as she hugged her possible future sister-in-law back. "Same to you. I've been busy with school work so it's nice to get a break from that."
Something sparkled in Jaycelynn's eyes as she pulled away and clapped her tanned hands. "Well, get ready for another break at the end of the month!"
Shizuka tilted her head to the side. "What do you mean?"
Anzu chuckled while Akane rolled her eyes from behind her cup of espresso. Normally, Akane rolled with Jaycelynn's shenanigans. What was going on?
"Well, don't keep us in suspense, Girlie," Mai teased as she reached for the small cafe menu. Her manicured nails drummed along the laminated card.
Jaycelynn pouted. "You're no fun. Anyway, Kaiba is having a Halloween event at his park," she said before whipping out a card that featured Dark Magician Girl and Pumpking the King of Ghosts. She slid it towards the two other girls.
Shizuka's eyes glittered at the sight. Kaiba holding a Halloween event? Whatever that was? Her eyes scanned the scant details of the cards. It was going to be held on October 31st. Costumes were encouraged. What was Death-T though? It sounded pretty creepy. Still, it excited her. Her hands trembled in anticipation only for her girlfriend to reach over and pluck it from her hands. Shizuka watched as her beautiful violet eyes stared hard at the card, flipping it over front and back before holding it up against the light to see if there were other details.
"Well, I'm not going," Mai said before handing the card back to Jaycelynn. "It reeks of Kaiba's signature egotism. If it's not a Duel Monsters tournament then I don't trust it. Hell, I'm not sure I'd trust it if it was a tournament. He's not normally one for small private affairs like this. I bet this is just some way to humiliate us puny peons and show off his immense wealth." Her eyes flickered towards Akane, a dear friend of hers and one of the main reasons why Jaycelynn tolerated the blonde, who was shooting a particularly nasty glare. "No offence."
Akane huffed. "None taken... Only because it's you."
Both Shizuka and Jaycelynn pouted. The raven haired girl clapped her hands on the table, causing the various drinks and dishes to shake from the impact, as fire blazed in her hazel eyes. "Come on, Mai! Isn't the fact that it's Kaiba holding a party or whatever at all super interesting? It's even better because it's the best holiday of the year!"
The blonde slowly blinked as Shizuka rose her hand. "I agree. It sounds super fun. But... what is Halloween exactly?"
Jaycelynn sighed as Momoe and Anzu cackled beside her. "Basically... It's a holiday in the west where we celebrate the macabre! Originally? It was, like, Obon, I think? I might be wrong. The boundary between the living and the dead is really thin. It became something else as time went on, at least in North America. There's tons of scary movies, haunted houses, trick or treating—basically we go from house to house to collect candy while wearing costumes to trick the mean spirits—and do a bunch of other stuff but it's basically all about the scares and the treats!"
Shizuka bit her lip. Her eyes grew bigger and bigger as Jaycelynn gushed about Halloween. "Come on Mai," she began. "Even if it's Kaiba running it, aren't you at least a little curious?"
"It sounds pretty juvenile to me."
The brunette pouted. Mai blinked in surprise before sighing. "You can go without me, you know."
"It's more fun with more people!" Jaycelynn said, only to be ignored.
"But... I'd like to spend my first Halloween with you, Mai."
Mai sighed. "...Alright. I'll tag along. Just don't expect me to dress up."
"Oh come on!" Jaycelynn cried out much to everyone's amusement.
Shizuka giggled as her brown eyes locked with Mai's violet ones. She leaned up and pressed a kiss to the corner of her painted lips. "Thanks, Mai."
Wide brown eyes locked with Mai's watery eyes before Shizuka's legs gave out under her in front of Mai's body. Her pupils shrank to pin pricks as all air escaped from her lungs. Her heart stopped. Ice water rushed through her body as everything felt so heavy. Incredibly heavy. Everything was so loud and silent all at once. The screams that came from her friends echoed and faded away in her rattled mind. Her face buried itself in her hands as a harsh scream tore itself from her throat. Or at least, it tried to. Her voice was caught inside her throat and refused to escape. Fat hot tears rolled down her face and washed away some of the white makeup on her cheeks as everything began to fade to a foggy grey.
Jaycelynn wasn't fairing any better.
Her screams bounced off the walls as guilt, pure unfiltered fear and shame attacked her heart at all sorts of angles. She collasped onto the ground as her throat grew raw from all her shrieking. Inky tears rolled down her cheeks from her now ruined eye makeup. "Oh god, oh god, oh god," she muttered as she looked up to see Mai's impaled corpse. "I... I did this. I..."
Katsuya felt himself tense up completely. Bile rose in his throat as his mind went a mile a minute. His eyes flickered from Shizuka, his poor little sister who just lost her first love, to Jay, the love of his life, who screamed for comfort and then to Mai, arguably his first serious crush. Pure emotion, whatever it was, he didn't know, battled it out inside his chest as he tried to figure out what was going on.
Yugi trembled as he tried to find the words to think let alone say to make everyone feel more at ease. However, he couldn't. He hadn't felt this much fear inside of him since his rival had threatened to end his own life back in Duelist Kingdom. The Millennium Puzzle glowed as he switched consciousness.
'Rest, Partner. I will take care of things,' Yami whispered to Yugi in their mind. His dark violet eyes flickered to Anzu who was also stunned into near silence. He ran towards the brunette and stood in front of her, hoping to shield her from the bloody sight. "Kaiba! To say you have gone too far is an understatement. Know that I will deliver a punishment so harsh that your descendants will feel it!"
Honda gnashed his teeth before rushing towards Shizuka as Ryou finally rushed towards Jay to help her up. Katsuya then followed Honda's example, seeing as Shizuka could not stand up herself anymore.
With tears in her eyes, Akane stomped towards the hologram and tried to take a swing at it, knowing it wouldn't do anything. But what else could she do?! "Seto!" Her deep voice rumbled in the spine of her friends. "You bastard! You... You didn't say you were going to do this! You didn't say you were going to kill us!"
Kaiba sneered above them as his hologram faded away and a trail of lights on the ground led the group to an elevator. "You best be on your way. I'd hate to see you all perish before we can really begin."
Otogi placed his hand on a trembling Akane's shoulder as he squeezed Momoe's hand so tightly that their bones creaked in his grasp. "Lets... lets go, Akane. Come on."
Reluctantly, Akane pulled herself away from the still lingering leer of her boyfriend's hologram and headed towards the elevator. Katsuya managed to scoop Shizuka in his embrace and hold her tight as she stayed limp. It was like she was made of water and Katsuya was determined to keep her close. Honda stayed close as he led them to the elevator. Jaycelynn sobbed as Ryou more or less dragged her towards the doors. Momoe stayed silent, save for her wooden clogs knocking against the once immaculate tile, before collapsing into Otogi's arms and trembling.
The gang was silent, save for the crying and grinding of teeth from various members, as the elevator lifted them up what seemed like dozens of floors. The elevator dinged and the doors slid open to reveal a man made cave like entrance. Crumbling bricks stacked upon crumbling bricks lined the entrance as a sign that read 'DEATH-T 2' in dripping red paint.
Tensions were still high as everyone stepped out of the elevator. Otogi swallowed as he turned towards the small crowd, "I guess he really did spare no expense for us, huh?"
"He's reusing the Murder Mansion?" Anzu asked, slightly ignoring the brunet as they made their way past the sign.
"...I... I guess even Kaiba has a budget," Katsuya joked halfheartedly. He squeezed a still silent Shizuka who didn't respond.
The group walked down the dark cave. While it was obvious that Kaiba had reused certain assets, this cave structure was not here before. Their footsteps echoed down the narrow path ahead of them. The smallest of sounds carried throughout the cave, seeping into their pores and rattling their teeth. A harsh breeze carried itself through the stale, choking air. Colours danced in the corners of their vision as the cave only grew darker and darker as they continued to walk. Eventually, the flickering light of a dying lantern filled their vision.
"Let's go!" Katsuya muttered as he picked up the pace, only for Yami to grab his shoulder.
"I agree, Jounouchi. However, its likely that it could be a trap from Kaiba. Be prepared, everyone."
Everyone nodded before bracing themselves for the worst.
The flickering light grew brighter and brighter as they got closer to it. The shadows both melted and grew in the unsteady light. By the lantern stood a slim figure in a familiar usher uniform. Honda blinked. "Is that Ribbon?"
"Nosaka-san?" Anzu murmured as she noticed that the usher stood on a raised platform beside a track. On the track was a vehicle that had nine seats that resembled old rickety electric chairs that glinted maliciously in the candlelight that illuminated the usher's gloomy face. It was indeed Miho Nosaka again. "Nosaka-san, is that... Why are you still... Why are you here?"
"Please be seated," Miho said, ignoring Anzu's question.
Anzu squinted at the cave in front of her. It looked like they would be walking for even longer than they did before. The light bounced off the deep cave walls in a way that reminded her of watching TV on Saturday nights until the channels all went off the air. That uneasiness that came with watching too-loud static or the harsh beeps and boops that accompanied the rainbow stripes filled her. She swallowed as she turned towards the vehicle.
"Man," Katsuya muttered. "Kaiba must be desperate if he's reusing this piece of shit ride."
"Please be seated," Miho repeated.
"Yeah, yeah..." Katsuya muttered as he took a seat in the back and cradled Shizuka tight in his lap. It was more than likely that he would be the one to ruin things for the both of them. He should hand her off to someone with steelier nerves than he had. At least that way, she'd be safe even if he cracked. However, he couldn't let her go. His hands trembled at the thought of letting her go. He swallowed as sweat rolled down his brow. Hopefully, Shizuka could somehow come back to her senses and get off of his lap before he inevitably screamed.
Jaycelynn sat in the seat next to Katsuya and Shizuka. Ryou sat in front of her, hoping that somehow he could help her brace herself for whatever would come or even protect her. Honda sat next to Ryou so he could eye Shizuka from the corner of his vision. Yami and Anzu took the row in front of them, her heart pounding inside of her chest as memories of their last ride on The Electric Chair Ride of Death was a close call. Everyone had only survived thanks to Jouji.
"I don't... I don't trust this, Ryu-chan," Momoe murmured.
Otogi shot her a sympathetic look. "I... I know, babe. I don't think there's... any other route, though," he whispered to her before squeezing his beau's hands tight.
"Please. Be. Seated."
The raven haired man shot the faux geisha a smile before leaning in and stealing the kiss he wanted earlier.
"I just don't want anything bad happening to you," Momoe mumbled against his now stained lips.
"That's should be my line."
"...Promise me that we're gonna be okay,"
Another squeeze of the hands was given to the brunette. "We'll be okay. I'll be okay. I promise—"
A heavy sigh filled the cave as Miho more or less shoved the couple onto the ride's platform, even going so far as placing her hand over Otogi's mouth to silence him. "Please. Be. Seated."
Rolling his eyes, Otogi led Momoe to one of the free seats and sat next to her. Hesitantly, she reached across the row to grab her boyfriend's hand only for Miho to grab her wrist and push it onto the arm rest. Then, everyone's limbs were clamped into place by a metal band that slid out of the arm rest, save for Shizuka who simply rested against Katsuya's puffed chest.
Akane stood on the platform and eyed down the final seat at the very back on its lonesome. What did Seto have in mind for them? Another heavy sigh came from behind the tall redhead. "Alright, I'm going," she snapped. Her thick chunky heels cracked noisily against the wooden platform. She watched as everyone's eyes were all on her. Momoe and Ryuji reluctantly tore their eyes away from each other to give Akane a nod. Yami looked cool as usual as Anzu gently closed her eyes to suck in a few shaky breaths. Honda's eyes shone with determination as Ryou looked anxious. Jaycelynn looked petrified. Reluctantly, Akane reached for her shoulder and gave it a soft squeeze before looking over to the catatonic Shizuka and the panicking Katsuya. Miho coughed behind Akane and gently shoved her to the final seat. The redhead grit her teeth as she sat herself down and was strapped down to the chair. Her hair stood up on its ends as static electricity pulsed through the air.
Miho stepped off the ride and got back onto the original platform. "Good luck," she muttered before snuffing out the light.
The ride lurched forward, its rickety wheels clattering noisily against the tracks as rows and columns of TVs on the cave walls lit up. On every screen was a sneering Seto Kaiba.
"As some of you are aware, this is The Electric Chair Ride of Death," he said. "Not the most subtle but you know me... I'm not one for subtlety," he joked. No one laughed. Not that he could have blamed them. Nerves were high. "I'll repeat the rules for our newcomers. These are real chairs used in various criminal's executions... Many sick-minded individuals have died where you sat. Isn't that interesting? One change I made to these is that they will transmit one million volts... Don't worry, they won't go off if you don't scream."
Kaiba's laughter rang throughout the tunnel before the screens all went back to noisy static that scratched the back of the throat.
Jaycelynn swallowed as she turned towards Katsuya whose eyes were screwed shut. Panic pulsed throughout her chest as she realized she couldn't rely on her boyfriend for strength or comfort. He had not only himself but Shizuka to look after. Still, she couldn't help but feel frustration bubble inside of her gut. Her mouth grew sticky and dry. Sweat rolled down her back as she swore she could see something in the crackling grey static. A dark figure travelled from screen to screen as they travelled down the rickety track.
Eerie blue light painted the crowd. The bright flickering lights of the screen somehow highlighted the shifting shadows that painted themselves on the rattling floor and profiles of the riders. The stench of adrenaline hung in the dank air. The buzz of of electricity seeped into their pores and seemed to highlight the lack of any noise... that didn't come from the staticky televisions.
Katsuya puffed as his nails scraped against the splintering wood. His jaw ached from how harshly his molars ground each other. His throat ached. He didn't dare open his eyes lest he see some freaky horror that Kaiba concocted. Air blew against the back of his sweating neck. A shuddering breath blew from his nose as that puff of air travelled lower and lower. A hand, or something, gripped his knee and everything went back.
Anzu stared forward at the back of Momoe's chair. The eerie flickering light danced in the corners of her vision. Occasional puffs of air rolled up and down her back. She could do this. Slowly, something crawled down the back of the chair. Something thick, fuzzy and dark. Its many legs slowly dragged its heavy body down the splintering surface. Sweat rolled down her neck as it dropped onto the floor and onto her feet. Her toes curled inside her pumps. Her jaw clenched as the black mass crawled up her leg. It was a spider. A massive spider. Her skin crawled as the creature's hairy legs brushed against the bare strip of flesh on her thighs. Her breathing quickened as she tried to ignore the tickling sensation and to tear her eyes away from the mass. More and more spiders began to crawl up and down Momoe's chair and head towards Anzu who didn't dare open her mouth.
Ryou slowly blinked as he tried to turn to get a look at his fellow ride goers. The tension of losing his friends, specifically Jaycelynn, hung in the damp air. Still, he didn't seem to be as affected as they were. He couldn't believe his interest in horror and the occult had prepared him for something like this. Still, he couldn't help but feel his stomach churn as his eyes closed. Images of Jaycelynn danced through his rattled brain. Her smile, her midnight black hair, her glittering eyes and the scent of her citrus perfume... Only for the scent of burning something to waft through his senses. Bile rose in his throat as the thought of her burning into a crisp came into his mind. The potential sight of her beautiful eyes without that sparkle of life had his heart pang painfully.
Honda steeled his gaze. Monsters, some he recognized and others he didn't, flashed on the flickering screens. They were there for a second. Or maybe, they weren't there at all. His blood ran cold as the ride slowed to a near stop. Air puffed out along his neck and back but he steeled himself. A creature crawled out from a cracked screen beside him. Hands shot out to grip his knees and stare him in the eye only for him to blink and they were gone.
Akane bit her lip as she stared forward. The ride had stopped in front of a crossroads. Her fingers drummed against the arm rest only for her to notice two buttons. Hesitantly, she tapped on the left button. The ride lurched back to life and caused her to lilt forward. Her top hat flew off her head. Static once again pulsed through the air, almost as if the sound of the hat hitting the floor was enough to electrocute her. Her pupils shrank to pinpricks as a bead of sweat rolled down her jaw.
Yami slowly blinked. His reaction to all of this was similar to Ryou's. He wasn't scared for himself. He had seen plenty of parlour tricks before. It was all just all just smoke and mirrors. Or rather, it was holograms and ones and zeroes in Kaiba's case. Still, there was no denying the threat that hung in the air. If he or his friends made a loud enough sound to be picked up by the microphones that hung from the helmets, it was the end of Yugi's or Yugi's friends lives. If only he could use the puzzle to have everyone see the truth ahead.
Momoe swallowed as she tried to wriggle out of the binds. If only she thought to slip something in her sleeves that could have broken her out. But, what would she do? Was there a way to shut off the ride from actually on the ride?! Tears pricked at her eyes. Fat hot tears rolled down her painted cheeks and ruined her makeup even more. Her teeth sank into her bottom lip. She was useless. She was useless but had to survive. She made Ryuji promise her that things would be okay. So, she had to be okay. She was going to be okay. They were all going to be okay—
Suddenly all the screens flicked off. Gone was the static. Gone was all the light. Gone was the noise. All everyone could hear was the subtle buzz of electricity in the air, the throbbing of their hearts and the occasional hiss of air that puffed against their neck. Minutes dragged by as the ride slowly took them down the track in pitch blackness. Colours swam in the corners of everyone's vision. It was so quiet. So brittle. Just a sigh would have been enough to shatter the ice cold air around them.
The ride came to a sudden stop. Everyone shot forward and bounced against the seat inside their respect bounds. Honda's head slammed against the helmet. He bit down on his tongue and sucked in a deep breath to silence himself.
Light poured into their eyes from above as several screens surrounded the tram. Mai Kujaku stood there in all her powerful glory before a black spike impaled itself into her leg. A scream tore itself from her throat as pain flashed in her beautiful face. Every screen showed a different angle or particularly zoomed in shot of Mai's death. Blood gushed from her wounds and rolled down her lovely skin. The light faded from her eyes.
A scream tore itself from Otogi's throat as images of the woman's violent demise flashed in his vision. Electricity crackled loudly as his scream travelled into the mic. Every hair on his body stood up before voltage shot through his body. Pure sensation ripped through his form. Tears rolled down his face as his mouth frothed. Frothy saliva rolled down his chin and stained his kimono. His muscles tensed. His hands gripped the arm rests so tightly that it splintered in his grasp. The scent of burning hair and flesh washed across the rest of the crowd.
Momoe's jaw dropped as she watched a million volts travel through her beloved Ryu-chan's body. He shook like a leaf in a storm as he rattled inside that rickety chair. A silent scream ripped through her body as the image of her lover burned itself into her retinas.
The ride continued to everyone's shock. Eventually, they were out of the cave and stopped in front of a dilapidated manor. The metal binds clanked as everyone was released. Momoe shot up from her seat to charge towards Otogi, who was limp in his seat. Smoke rose off his body as everyone, save for a still knocked out Katsuya and catatonic Shizuka, rushed to get off the ride.
Momoe's screams finally escaped her as she collapsed on top of Otogi's thighs. Her arms wrapped around his hips as she buried her face in his lap, sobbing wildly. The rest of his friends tried to tear their eyes away from the sight just so they could at least attempt to distract themselves from the truth.
Ryuji Otogi was dead.
