Chapter 11 – Introducing Lord Potter

Remus Lupin and Sirius Black stood toe to toe with an irate Vernon Dursley. "Mr Dursley, my dear fellow, please see things from our point of view." Remus said pleasantly. "We have been sent here for your protection."

"The only thing we need protection from is bloody magic." Uncle Vernon complained.

"Exactly my point, old boy." Remus told him. "And you simply cannot protect yourself from magic without possessing magic of your own."

"Dursley you are trying my patience." Sirius warned quietly. "Just let us bloody explain, will you?"

"Fine!" Uncle Vernon snapped. "You ruddy well explain then."

"Now, now." Remus tried to placate both men. "Let's not let our tempers flare. I have some good news for you Mr Dursley."

"Oh yeah? What's that then?" Vernon demanded.

"Earlier tonight Harry was declared a legal adult." Remus told him. "And that means he will never have to return here."

"So were finally rid of the brat then!" Vernon delighted. "Good riddance."

"Yes, well." Sirius began. "But this does leave us with a problem you see?"

"What's the problem?" Vernon sneered. "None of your lot want to take the little bugger in?"

"No." Sirius said. "If anything, Harrys problem will lie in the other direction. But no, our problem is how can we protect you?"

"Why would we need protection?" Dudley asked

"We don't need anything from these people, Dudders." Vernon muttered.

"Well actually…" Sirius said.

"What aren't you telling us, Black?" Petunia demanded.

"Ah Petunia, how nice to see you again." Sirius said with a mock bow.

"I'm assuming Dumbledore explained about the protective wards he placed around your home when Harry came to live with you?" Remus asked.

"Yes, he said that they would protect us as long as we kept the boy here." Petunia said.

"Something like that." Vernon agreed.

"Well, as Harry is now an adult in our world, he will not return here. This has been somewhat of an oversite I must admit." Sirius explained. "When I arranged his emancipation, I didn't think about your safety. But since your oaf of a husband beat seven bells out of the lad a couple of weeks ago and I haven't ripped his spine out of his arse hole, how about we call it even?"

"Sirius, that isn't helpful." Remus snapped at his fellow Marauder. "No matter the circumstances the simple fact remains, those wards have failed. He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named will be able to find this house and there is nothing we can do to prevent it."

"So, we will lose our home?" Petunia asked.

"Unfortunately, that may be the case. But we need to get you out of here quickly." Sirius replied. "Please. Go pack a bag, just what you need for a couple of days. We will sort you out with anything else you need, later."

"Oh, all right." Vernon conceded finally. "You better be putting us up some place nice." Ten minutes later the Dursleys reassembled in their living room.

"Dudley there is no point in taking your coinputer." Sirius said. "It won't work around magic."

"What the bloody hell am I supposed to do all day?" Dudley complained.

"Read a book" Remus said loudly.

"Do some exercise." Sirius muttered under his breath.

"Right then." Remus said brightly. "The car should be right outside by now." Remus lead the family outside where a black town car sat patiently at the end of the drive. "This is Nymphadora Tonks." Remus introduced them to the young witch sitting behind the wheel. "Nymph is an Aurora, sort of like a police officer. She is going to take you to a safe house in Derbyshire."

"All aboard." Nymphadora said brightly. "I'll have you at the safe house by breakfast time." The car pulled away taking the Dursleys away from their home for a final time.

The Goblin nation had caves, the length and breadth, of the United Kingdom. Most wizards didn't even think about the subterranean dwellers who controlled the wealth of magical Briton. And in the deepest cave, underneath Ben Nevis, the highest mountain in all the UK, the Goblin Nation Hall of Records was based. The cavern contained all the wills of all the great wizarding families and in the very centre of the cavern a large stone table sat. A loud ethereal gong rang out in the cave, within seconds three goblins descended on the table as the goblins took their place. Scrolls containing the last will and testaments of several prominent magical families came to the table.

"This is most unusual." The first goblin noted.

"Indeed." The second agreed.

"Brothers?" The third said picking one of the scrolls up at random, "Have you looked at the names on these scrolls?"

The first goblin picked up a second scroll.

"I have the Potters." He said. "I see nothing of importance here."

"I have the will of Godric Gryffindor!" The second declared.

"I hold the Will of Merlin!" The third reviled.

"I believe we must speak to the King." The first declared.

"Agreed." The second nodded.

Harry awoke in his bedroom at the Grangers house. He slowly opened his eyes before quickly closing them again. The early morning light streaking through the curtains hurt his eyes. 'Oh, my head hurts' He thought as he sat up and finally managed to survey the damage. 'I'm in so much trouble!' He thought.

"It feels rather like a hangover." Dumbledore said walking into the room, stepping over a broken lamp. "Good morning Harry, I trust you slept well."

"I don't think you could call in sleep sir." Harry said pulling his sheet over his exposed torso.

"No." Dumbledore agreed. "I realise you have just woken up and you will have a lot of things on your mind, but I wonder if you remember what happened last night."

"I do." Harry told him. "And you and I need to talk." Harry told him. "But first…" He stood his arms outstretched "Locus Repairo" All of the broken pieces of furniture in the room began flying around reassembling themselves and returning to their correct place. The ripped-up paper of the book pages littered across the floor came together in a whorl wind, the tiny bits of paper reformed into pages, the pages found their brethren, grouped together and were then rebound into pristine looking books which found their way back onto the shelves. The glass from the light bulbs came together and forged new bulbs and found their way back to their light fittings and finally the bed hovered in the air. The legs, that had splintered, pulled themselves back together and reattached themselves to the bed which gently lowered back to the floor. The room looked brand new.

Mr Granger stepped over a shelf and pulled off a book called Guards! Guards! By Terry Prattchet. He flicked through the book to a particular page. "Incredible." Mr Granger declared. "I lost page 88 and 104 on a train going up to Edinburgh fifteen years ago." He closed the book with a snap. "Excuse me." He said and he took the book to the toilette, a man's personal reading room. "I may be some time." He finished locking the door.

"Well then" Dumbledore said because one has to say something in these moments. "Might I suggest that we allow Harry a few moments to get dressed and we can begin our discussions?"

Everyone else left Harry too it and he joined them in the kitchen a few moments later. Mrs Granger made tea and Harry explained about meeting Keeper and his parents. "My parents want you to know sir," Harry said turning to Dumbledore "They know why you sent me to the Dursleys and they have heard your apologies over the years."

Dumbledore's eyes began to water. "I am sorry Harry." He began. "I was placed with an impossible choice. After your parents died. With Peter Pettigrew apparently dead, Sirius Black his killer and Remus Lupin's condition, I did not know where you would be safe." He explained. "I always suspected Voldemort may still return and that many of the Death Eaters who had escaped prosecution remained loyal to his cause. I was of course inundated with offers from families willing to take you in. Augusta Longbottom still has not forgiven me for not sending you to her as your families have always been allies and friends, but with what happened to Alice and Frank I did not wish to add to her burden of raising her young grandson Neville alone. The Bones also offered to have you, a light family, true, but a family which owes much of its success to the Ministry of Magic and the Zabini family also wrote to me to offer to take you as their ward, but the Zabini's have long been allied with the pure-blood supremacist movement which exists within the magical society."

"No matter where you would have been placed, Harry you would have been a celebrity, something you have discovered in recent years. I wanted to protect you from that as well as from Ministerial influence, or even worse from the dark forces still at large. So, you were orphaned and an infant who could not be placed in the custody of the magical state, what else could I have done? You had to go to the Dursleys. When they agreed to take you, your uncle insisted that they would be allowed to raise you without interference from our world. A condition that I reluctantly agreed to, after all they were your family. Something I regret Harry. For what you had to endure during your childhood you have my most sincere apologies. I was in error and I made a mistake. Not the first I had ever made, but I must admit among the gravest of errors."

"That's a very pretty speech Professor." Harry said. "And I understand your reasoning, and I think one day I may be able to forgive you for sending me there. But I'm not there yet. Right now, we need to talk about what I was told."

"Of course, Harry." Dumbledore nodded sadly.

"I am to take my place within society and within the Wizengamot." Harry told them. "My parents said you would know the best way to do that."

"Of course, I will assist you in this matter." Dumbledore told him.

"I am also to take command of the Order of the Phoenix, whatever that is." Harry said, "And restore its fighting forces whilst maintaining the current operations. I don't really understand that sir, I'm going to need you to explain it all to me."

"Once again Harry, I will most definitely be able to help you there." Dumbledore said, somewhat surprised.

"I know you have been leading the order since Grindelwald sir, and I have no desire to oust you or undo your work." Harry told him. "But I have been told that my destiny is to defeat Voldemort and right the wrongs within our society and I am going to need your help sir. I am naive and inexperienced, and I know, so very young but we don't have time for me to learn everything that I need to learn and I'm going to have to gain experience as I go."

"I will render any assistance you feel you need." Dumbledore told him earnestly. "I know I have damaged the trust that has existed between us and I will work as hard as I can to repair this damage."

"Thank you, sir." Harry said. "Where do we start?" As if by magic an owl arrived and dropped a letter in Harrys lap. It bore the seal of Gringotts.

Harry broke the seal and pulled a heavy sheet of parchment from the envelope.

Dear Lord Potter,

As you have reached your maturity, the final conditions of the Last Will and Testament of Lord and Lady Potter has been met and as such a reading of said will can be carried out today at three pm.

All other benefactors will be informed of the reading and are invited to attend if it is their wish to do so.

You are requested to report to the main reception of the London Branch today and you will be escorted to the Reading Room. Please allow for several hours for this process as there is a lot of administration involved.

Yours

CC: Heralds office Ministry of Magic.

"I suggest, Harry." Dumbledore said. "That we start with the reading of your parents will and we may proceed from there."

Harry agreed. They finished their tea and Mr Granger re-joined the family.

"I had forgotten how good this book is." He told them. "What have I missed?"

The Herald's office of the Ministry of Magic is the department that kept track of the family trees of the Most Antient and Noble Houses, the Lesser houses and general genealogy of the wizarding realm. It also kept track of titles, Lords of houses, Earls of which county's, Dukes and knights. Admittedly there hadn't been many knighthoods bestowed upon magic users in hundreds of years many of the greater houses held Earldoms and Duchy's. There were also six wizarding families, that should they so desire, could take up hereditary seats within the Muggle House of Lords. The people who worked in this office were experts on genealogy and heraldry, but for the most part it was a forgotten and useless department.

When new heads of houses are reviled the

heralds are notified by the Great Ledger updating and setting off a ringing of bells, that up until just twenty years ago sounded throughout the whole ministerial complex. This morning the bell sounded very early. The herald on duty went to the Great Ledger and found the page open to the Potter Page.

Lords of the House of Potter
Harold Potter (Deceased)
James Harold Potter (Deceased)
Vacant
Harry James Potter

"The Minister is not going to be happy" The herald muttered. At least his shift was almost over, he had just enough time to make his way to the Office of the Minister. The herald arrived at Percy Weasley's desk and delivered his news and scuttled away. With a heavy and exhausted sigh Percy made his way to the Ministers Office and knocked on the door and entered without waiting for a response.

"The fault was not mine, Minister." Umbridge complained. "His solicitor…"

"Was acting in the best interest of his client." Fudge continued. "You lost Dolores. It is that simple. The thing is what do we do next?"

"Well I believe we should pursue the girl." Umbridge said. "The muggle born."

"What is the point?" Fudge said noticing Percy for the first time. "What now Percy?"

"Sorry to interrupt Minister, but I have just received word from the Heralds. Harry Potter is now the Lord of the Most Antient and Noble house of Potter."

"It never ends." Fudge said. "Thank you, you may go." Fudge watched Percy leave. "If you pursue Miss Granger, you need to come up with something stronger than a disciplinary committee." He said pulling a fresh sheet of parchment from a drawer and began scratching a quill across it. "Take this to DMLE and have them get this written up properly. But we must wait to send it out until the most opportune time."

Umbridge read the parchment, her eyes bright and an evil smile crossed her face. "As you wish Minister." Umbridge said. "Now if you will excuse me, I have a meeting with McNair from Magical Creatures."

"That's all for now Dolores." Fudge said. "Now we must be ready to weather the coming storm."

Harry and Hermione washed up after breakfast while the adults prepared for work. Dumbledore had returned to Hogwarts to prepare the Order of the Phoenix to meet with Harry later that day. They worked quietly; Harry could feel Hermione's trepidation. "What's wrong Hermione?" Harry asked.

"I'm worried about you Harry." Hermione told him. "A couple of weeks ago you were an abuse victim and today you are the chosen one washing dishes in my kitchen."

"I'm still me." Harry said. "I'm still the same dumb ass I have always been. I still need you. Chosen one or chosen dick head, it makes no difference. I will always need you by my side Hermione. In fact, I want you to join the Order."

"But I'm not of age." Hermione objected.

"That doesn't matter." Harry told her. "The Order is mine to command, and I need people around me that I trust. I trust you."

"Well if you're sure…" Hermione said.

Harry put the plate he was drying down and turned towards her taking her hands. "Hermione look at me." He said, his green eyes burning with intensity. "I love you. I trust you implicitly. I trust your judgement more than I trust my own at the moment. I am surer about you than I have been about anything."

"I love you too Harry." Hermione whispered closing the distance and kissing him with a passion she had never felt before.
