Chapter 18 – Memories

The entrance hall to the Ministry of Magic was a spectacular room, with emerald tiles on the floors, walls and ceiling. There were seven separate fireplaces along one wall, several lifts along the opposite wall, in the centre of the entrance hall was a huge fountain as well as a huge reception desk with three witches behind it. Once again dressed in his family robes Harry strode to the desk alongside Dumbledore.

"Can I help you?" one of the reception witches asked.

"Yes." Dumbledore smiled. "Albus Dumbledore and Lord Harry Potter to see Director Bones please."

"Do you have an appointment?" she asked.

"We do." Dumbledore said making a show of looking at his pocket watch. "The appointment is as a matter of fact now."

"I see sir." The receptionist smiled. "Fourth floor, NEXT!"

Dumbledore led Harry to the lifts, and they got out at the fourth floor. This was just a long winding corridor. "This way I think." Dumbledore told Harry leading him along the corridor. "This is the Department of Magical Law. The Auror offices are located behind this door." He went on pointing to a plain wooden door designated 4-1 "And this is where the Hit Wizards are," he went on pointing to 4-2. "And here is the Improper Use of Magic Offices, you know all about these fellows of course." Nodding at 4-3, "And this is the Miss use of Muggle Artifact Offices." 4-7, "Where of course Author Weasley works." Dumbledore continued to the end of the corridor past several more doors to the end of the corridor where there were a set of double doors. Dumbledore opened the door and was greeted by another reception desk.

"Can I help you professor?" a second reception witch asked.

"We have an appointment with Amelia." Dumbledore said.

"Ah yes, please go right on in professor." The receptionist said waving them through.

"Thank you." Harry said, as they moved into Bones' inner office.

"Ah, Professor Dumbledore, Lord Potter, please have a seat." Bones greeted them.

"Please Chief Warlock, call me Harry." Harry replied. "Thank you for agreeing to see me."

"In this office Harry, I am Director Bones, if you want me to be Chief Warlock, we will have to move this downstairs."

"Sorry Director, I thought we were meeting under the guise of the Wizengamot."

"That was my original intention." Bones admitted. "But downstairs its political if we talk in here, it's legal and that means I can act. Downstairs we would debate it and vote whether or not to act and Fudge would whip his people to vote it down." She explained. "In here the only whip is mine."

"All right." Harry agreed. "I think it's best if I just give you the memory and you and the Professor can view it."

"Will you come inside to tell us what we're seeing?" Bones asked.

"Amelia, I do believe that young Harry has been through this more than enough times." Dumbledore told her.

"I will of course answer any questions you have." Harry added.

"Will you answer them under caution?" Bones asked.

"I will bloody answer them under Veritaserum if you want." Harry said emphatically.

"In that case Lord Potter would you please take out your wand." Bones said formally and levitated her pensive from a cupboard behind her over to the desk in front of them. "Place your wand to your temple." She told him. "Now think extremely hard about the incident. Picture it all as clearly as you can. Smells, sounds, and what you saw. Who was there? Time of day? How you were feeling?"

Harry closed his eyes and placed his wand at his temple. He took several deep breaths and began to gently pull the wand away from his temple. Attached to the end of his wand was a silver strand. Harry extended his arm as far as it would go but the silver strand was still flowing from his head.

"Just flick it into the pensive Harry." Dumbledore told him. "The rest will follow." The memory strand took a few more seconds to find its way into the bowl.

"All right." Bones said. "Now here's the official bit, before I enter into these memories, do you Lord Potter swear on your honour, that these memories contain to the best of your knowledge the whole truth?"

"I do, director." Harry replied solemnly.

"Thank you, Harry." Bones smiled. "I will have to caution you before I question you when I come out, ready Albus?"

"Lead the way." Dumbledore said standing to look into the pensive.

Harry sat alone in Bones office for two and a half hours as the Director of the DMLE and Dumbledore reviewed his memory's. 'I sure as hell wish I had brought a book' He thought. He sat twiddling his thumbs for another minute or so before Dumbledore and Bones remerged from the stone basin.

"Well fuck me, sideways!" Bones cursed.

"Quite." Dumbledore agreed.

Bones sat heavily down in her chair, reaching into the bottom drawer of her desk, she pulled out a bottle of fire whisky and three glasses. She poured three generous measures and handed them out.

"Fucking fuck me!" she said again draining her glass. Dumbledore followed suit, Harry took a sip and left his on the table. "Not drinking Harry?"

"I'm fifteen director." Harry said.

"Ah yes of course." Bones agreed and drained the glass. She put the bottle and glasses away and in a business-like manner shuffled the papers on her desk.

"Normally you would be entitled to a solicitor to be present," She said, "But if you are amenable, I think Professor Dumbledore could act in that regard."

"I am amenable, if Harry is." Dumbledore nodded.

"As long as no one tells Ted." Harry smiled.

"Ok, it has been a long time since I have conducted an interview under caution." Bones said. "We need a second." She said moving to the door and spoke to her secretary. A few seconds later Tonks entered the room carrying a notebook and a quick quotes quill.

"I believe you know Auror Tonks?" Bones asked.

"I do indeed Director." Harry said.

"This quick quote quill is set to verbatim." Tonks told them.

"If we are all ready?" Bones asked. Everybody nodded. "Lord Harry of the House of Potter, I must here by caution you that anything you say in this interview will be recorded and used in evidence. Should you deliberately mislead us with your testimony you will be found in contempt of the Wizengamot and you will risk a minimum of three years in Azkaban. Do you understand."

"I do." Harry acknowledged.

"All right, interview with Harry Potter Lord of the House of Potter present…" Bones began as Tonks quill copied the interview.

"Auror Nymphadora Tonks." Tonks announced

"Lord Harry Potter." Harry said when prompted by Tonks pointing to him.

"Professor Albus Percival Wulfric Brian Dumbledore. Supreme Mugwump of the International Confederation of Wizards."

"And conducting this interview Amelia Bones Director of the Department of Magical Law Enforcement and Chief Warlock of the Wizengamot." Bones said taking a deep breath. "Right then Lord Potter, Professor Dumbledore and I have reviewed your memories of what happened after the third task of the Triwizard tournament. You and the late Cedrick Diggory where abducted from Hogwarts school by way of a port key and transported against your will to a cemetery. Do you know where that cemetery is?"

"I do not." Harry answered. "But I was tied to the grave of Thomas Riddle. Perhaps you could find the cemetery by searching the Muggle records?"

"We will." Bones nodded. "After you arrived in the cemetery, Cedrick Diggory was murdered by way of the killing curse, by someone I did not recognise. While we were in the memory, Dumbledore told me that wizard's identity, I wonder if you could please tell us if you knew who he was?"

"That was Peter Pettigrew." Harry replied. "Also known as Wormtail."

"Peter Pettigrew is dead." Bones stated.

"Peter Pettigrew faked his death and murdered a street full of muggles to disguise his escape." Harry told her.

"And you know this how?" Bones demanded.

"Sirius Black told me."

"When?"

"The year he escaped." Harry admitted. "You see he knew Peter was at Hogwarts and thought I was in danger." Harry then went on to explain how the Prisoner of Azkaban came to Hogwarts, Pettigrew's Animagus abilities and form. Their escape from Lupin and the eventual escape of Pettigrew.

"If you can get Black to come in, I can guarantee him a fair hearing." Bones told them.

"Any hearing would be better than no hearing at all." Harry muttered.

"What's that?" Bones demanded.

"I am afraid Director Crouch neglected to give Sirius a trial." Dumbledore told her.

"Bloody hell!" Bones swore. "Well we don't do that anymore. Not so long as I oversee this department." she promised. "Any way, back on topic. Pettigrew stunned you and then, presumably whilst you where unconscious he tied you to the grave of Thomas Riddle, the muggle father of one Tom Marvolo Riddle, as so known as Lord Voldemort?"

"Yes ma'am."

"Then Pettigrew made a potion and used the bones of the late Thomas Riddle, your blood and even his own hand to fashion a body for Voldemort?"

"Yes ma'am." Harry repeated.

"Voldemort summoned his Death Eaters by using the Dark Mark tattoo. Did you hear any incantation?"

"No, Voldemort just pressed his finger to the mark, and it seemed to summon everyone to him. I don't know how they knew where we were." Harry confirmed.

"All right. So, the Death Eaters arrive. I am afraid their faces were not clear in the memory so we could not make them out. Can you remember any names?"

"I can. Crabb and Goyal. Nott and Malfoy." Harry said confidently. Bones shared a look with Tonks.

"Lucius Malfoy?" Tonks asked for clarification.

"That's right."

"Are you sure Lord Potter?" Bones pressed. "This is very important."

"Yes, it was Lucius Malfoy. He bragged about never giving up hope and never abandoning the old ways."

"Very interesting." Bones murmured. "And after that there was your battle, where you were hit with the cruciatus curse at least twice. In the end you evaded the dule, summoned the Triwizard cup back to you, which in turn reactivated the port key which returned you to Hogwarts?"

"That's right ma'am." Harry confirmed. "And what happened next is all a matter of public record."

"Thank you, Lord Potter." Bones said before turning to Tonks. "Do you have any questions for His Lordship Tonks?"

"No ma'am." Tonks replied. "I have everything I need here."

"Right then, get that written up and I want four copies."

"Four, director?" Tonks asked surprised.

"That's right. I want the master copy, one duplicate to be placed in the file, one for your records of course and the final one to be sent upstairs."

"I see Director." Tonks said.

"Who's the Duty Sargent today Tonks?"

"Kingsley Shacklebolt."

"Right. Send him to see me and no one is to know the contents of this report. I mean it. Code word access only."

"Understood."

"Thank you, Tonks. You are dismissed." Bones said. "Now Harry, Albus, I'm sure you understand we have to be careful with this. If we go making a big song and dance about Him returning now, he could well just think sod it and start killing all willy nilly. We must get ahead of him. I will of course brief the Minister and he will most likely want it squashed. And you squashed as well…." She went on as a large black man came into the room. "Ah Sargent Shacklebolt. I need everything we have on the Crab's, Goyal's, Notts and Malfoys. This is need to know Shack. Only you and Tonks please. When she files her report send the master copy straight to me and keep the dupe for the file."

"That is most irregular Director." Shacklebolt objected.

"When you read her report, you will understand." Bones said.

"As you wish." Shacklebolt nodded.

"Get on with it." Bones ordered. "Right gentlemen." She returned her attention to Dumbledore and Harry. "You have given me a lot to think about."

"If we can be of any further service to you Amelia…" Dumbledore began

"I will be in touch." Bones confirmed. "Thank you very much gentlemen."

Harry and Dumbledore were ushered out. When the office door closed, she sank back down into her chair and pored herself another generous helping of fire whisky and necked it. "Fuck me!"
