Sometimes you just need to see things differently. Without posting spoilers, this story picks up during Daryl Dixon Season 2: The Book of Carol, Episode 04. If you haven't seen it, then it will be spoiled for you by reading this, as this story picks up midway through that episode. I did not like (read:hated) how the events of that episode played out, so this is my version.
