Here's something I've been working on since Exotrooper Anya. This is what I came up with when I thought about an alternative to the Yuri/ Fiona ship. Overall, it's in the spirit of the "light novel" stories, so not canon but not incompatible either.
The woman known as Fiona Frost looked up at the arrival of her latest visitor. It was a woman with glasses and dark hair. She glanced in the direction of the door to make sure that a certain unwanted listener was not present. "Are you even trying, Handler?" she said.
"You must have me confused with someone else," the visitor said with a smile. "I'm just here to tell you, a specialist has looked at the X-rays of the injuries from your… fall. The prognosis is still good. However, you will need further physical therapy to regain full mobility, particularly in your arm. Based on that, the hospital has decided to extend your leave, though you should be eligible to return to work part-time." She glanced at the cast on Fiona's right arm, which had, in fact, been broken repeatedly saving Agent Twilight from an Ostanian mole. "Fortunately, the hospital has opened a new clinic. You will have the benefit of the latest treatments. You might even meet some prominent people."
"Fine," Fiona said. "What's the assignment?"
Handler pulled out a slender file from amidst a stack of papers. "There is a person of interest in the physical therapy program," she said. She tapped a photo of a quite presentable man, taken at a three-quarters angle, preparing to climb into a plane with one propeller in the nose and another in the tail. "Lieutenant Colonel Steven Stahl, age… well, he held up well. Fighter ace of the Ost Wars, celebrated test pilot and leader of the 1st Jet Wing during the Second Westalis-Ostania War. Featured in numerous propaganda posters, films and broadcasts, which led to a respectable and highly profitable acting career. He managed to balance his public career with continued work on highly classified projects. That led to him being chosen as chief test pilot for the Ostanian Federation's space program. He was flying their experimental reusable reentry vessel when it crashed soon after takeoff. That left him as he is now…"
She held out another photo of the same man, now in the hazy borderland between middle age and old age. It showed his full face, including a prominent scar that ran from his left cheek up to his temple. It also showed his full body, which was missing both legs. Fiona considered his appearance. "Despite his condition, Mr. Stahl remains active," Handler said. "In addition to regular public appearances, he maintains an active social life. It is said that he has close friends in the military, the Ostanian government and even at Eden Academy…"
"Oh my gawd," Fiona said. "Is this a honeytrap assignment?"
"Come now," Handler said. "The honeytrap is an outmoded concept, based on already flawed theories and practices. We understand now that it isn't necessary or even particularly effective to use physical favors to obtain intelligence. We may still use the term, but we have outgrown what it means…"
"So, in the last… six months?" Fiona said coolly.
"In the intelligence community, change happens quickly," Handler said with a wave of a hand. "Now, the most interesting thing about Stahl is that he has a personal connection with a subject of interest to Strix." She held up a photo of a woman with light freckles and hair dyed blonde, and frowned when Fiona showed no immediate recognition. "Melinda Desmond, then Melinda Meddings. On screen, at least. She costarred with Steven in his breakthrough film Skies of Red. They also openly dated throughout filming. They and their publicists maintained that it was casual. They have remained close. Most recently, they were seen dining together with Rachel Michaelson from Berlint In Love. Oh, and there is another detail… During the war, they toured together raising funds for civil defense, while Donovan Desmond was caught in the double envelopment at the Siege of Goessen. 6 months after Mr. Desmond's return, Melinda gave birth to Demetrius Desmond." She held up a photo of a dark-haired young man.
"So, do I try to sack him and see if he says he already has someone?" Fiona said.
"That is the old way," Handler said. "All you have to do is watch for unforced and organic opportunities like this one, and then establish an emotional connection. That is how you get someone to open up to you. That should be no trouble for a distinguished agent like you. Shouldn't it?"
Handler rose with a smile. "Look, I know," Nightfall said. Handler paused. "If I had been the one unconscious instead of Twilight..."
"Then you would be dead and so would he," Handler said. "That's not what he says, it's what I say. It's odd that you are the one who has to be told that." Then she left, no longer smiling.
A short time later, Fiona looked up, vaguely aware of the sound of approaching wheels. She expected to see Handler returning, or else Director Gorey with yet another pretense to demand her attention. Instead, she beheld the face of a smiling, handsome man, no higher than she was lying in bed. She immediately blushed. "Hello," the man said. "Sorry if I surprised you. Are you by any chance Fiona Frost?"
"Ah, yes," she stammered. Only then did she connect the face, and it embarrassed her all the more. "I mean, well, that's my name. What's your name?"
"I'm Steven Stahl," he said, smiling wider. Only then did Fiona glance down at his wheelchair. A blanket covered his lap and lower body, but it was clear enough that his legs were missing below the knee. "It means `steel', though I suppose it sounds like something else. I suppose you might have heard of me. I was just on my way to an appointment, and someone mentioned we would be in the therapy wing together. I figured it wouldn't hurt to get introductions out of the way. Anyway, I'm sure you will do just fine. Hm, do be careful on stairs." Fiona gnawed her lip as he rolled away.
