Music played in Little Miss Music's ears, but for once, she was not paying attention to the lyrics. She paced in her kitchen, her mind racing, panic threatening to consume her. What was she going to do? Her whole life would change now! She felt sick and she wasn't sure if it was because she was so worried or because of morning sickness.
Suddenly her path was blocked, and she looked up at her best friend. She reached into her pocket for her phone and paused her music.
"Relax," Little Miss Calamity told her, resting her hand on her shoulder. "It's not the end of the world."
"But what am I supposed to do?" Little Miss Music asked, feeling herself trembling. "Should I tell him? I have to tell him, but what if he's not happy? What if he doesn't want anything to do with me when I tell him? How am I supposed to raise a baby by myself? I can't!" She was breathing heavily now and she felt lightheaded.
"Miss. Music, you need to calm down. Think about the baby. You'll make yourself sick and it might hurt your unborn child."
Seeing the sense in what her friend was saying, she took a shaky breath and forced herself to relax. But she was still trembling. "How am I supposed to tell him?" she whimpered.
"I'm sorry; I'm still having trouble understanding how this happened." When Little Miss Music flashed her an uncomfortable look, she added," I mean, I know how it happened. I just…. You can't even speak to him without panicking. How did you two do… that…?"
Little Miss Music shifted standing positions. She wasn't far along, but she imagined feeling the baby move inside her, even though it was too early for that. She didn't want to admit that he had invited her over just to satisfy himself. At the time, she had been heartbroken that he just wanted to use her. But since that day, they've spent more time together, and she liked to think what they did opened the door to a possible relationship.
They've fooled around several times since then, and went all the way a couple of more times, but there's just been days where they hung out, watching TV or going fishing. She found the more time she spent with him, the easier it was to talk to him and just be around him. Before that, she would get tongue-tied and would run away so she didn't say or do something foolish. Now, she felt like there was real hope of a serious relationship.
Could this news help or harm them getting together? She wasn't sure, and she was afraid of finding out.
"It's going to be hard, but you have to tell him." Little Miss Calamity paused. Then she asked," Do you want me to come with you?"
Little Miss Music shook her head. "No. Thank you, but no. I need to do this alone." When Little Miss Calamity looked worried, she said," I'll be fine. I'll find you afterwards."
"Okay. Good luck."
Little Miss Music left her house and went through town, the quickest way to his house. The whole way she was trying to think of how she was going to tell him. When the tan house came into view, she was still lost for words.
She stared at the house for a long time. Right when she took a step forward, the door opened and the blue Mr. Man stepped outside. Not noticing Little Miss Music nearby, he turned and started talking to someone as they came out of the house. Little Miss Music was shocked to see that it was Little Miss Sunshine. She could hear them from where she was.
"Thank you for your help, Miss. Sunshine," the Mr. Man said, a strange smile on his face. "You promise not to tell anyone? Especially not Miss. Music."
"Of course, Mr. Grumpy." She smiled cheerfully. "I'm so glad I could help. Let me know if there's anything else you need." She stretched out her arms, and Little Miss Music was shocked when Mr. Grumpy actually hugged her. But quickly he pulled away and turned his head. His eyes widened when he saw Little Miss Music.
Little Miss Sunshine turned and gasped.
Mr. Grumpy took a step back from the yellow Little Miss. "Miss. Music! It isn't what it looks like! She was just… um… helping me with something…" Why did he look so guilty?
Feeling numb, Little Miss Music started backing away. She just barely noticed that Mr. Grumpy was walking to her. Turning, she ran away. She heard him calling her back, but she didn't stop. She kept running, blindly passing her friends. A few of them tried to stop her but she pushed past them and just kept running.
Finally, out of breath, she stopped and looked around. She was far from town. Walking now, she kept going, mind racing. Why was Little Miss Sunshine at Mr. Grumpy's house? What did she help him with?
Suddenly a horrible thought entered her mind. She didn't want it to be true. It couldn't be true, could it? She was beginning to believe that he had feelings for her and that it was the start of their love story. What if she was wrong? What if he was just using her this whole time? That thought was unbearable and she pushed it away, desperate to believe he loved her and that he didn't just want in her pants.
When Little Miss Music ran away, Mr. Grumpy tried to follow her, wanting to explain why Little Miss Sunshine was at his house. He realized how it must have seemed, but they didn't do anything! He needed to tell her the truth even if he had wanted it to be a surprise.
But he lost sight of her in town; she was fast! He walked down the sidewalk, looking in every window to see if she ducked into a shop. But there was no sign of her anywhere! Where could she have gone?
Then it dawned on him. Leaving town, he headed toward Little Miss Calamity's house. He knocked on the door and the orange Little Miss answered, looking surprised to see him.
"Mr. Grumpy!" she gasped. "What are you doing here? Didn't Miss. Music come see you?"
He shifted standing positions. "Um yeah," he stammered. "But… she ran away… Did she come here?"
She widened her eyes. "Ran away? Why?"
He stared down at the ground, unsure how to explain. She seemed to know he messed up because she sighed and said," What did you do?"
"She might have seen me hugging Miss. Sunshine," he muttered.
Little Miss Calamity gasped. "Why did you hug her?"
"She was helping me with something for Miss. Music and I was so excited that when she opened her arms, I hugged her." Quickly he added," But we didn't do anything! I promise! She was just helping me with a special night for Miss. Music!"
When Little Miss Calamity said," Oh?" Mr. Grumpy felt embarrassed.
He shifted his feet and confessed," We've been hanging out a lot recently and I wanted to plan a special date night but I didn't know where to begin planning a date that Miss. Music would enjoy. Every time I take her fishing, I can tell she doesn't enjoy herself. She's restless and bored. So I thought Miss. Sunshine would know what she would like."
Little Miss Calamity interrupted him. "Why didn't you ask me?" she said.
"Because I was afraid you'd tell her or say something that'd give away the secret," he replied, slightly annoyed that she asked him that question.
She eyed him. Then she sighed. "Oh Mr. Grumpy," she murmured, shaking her head. "She didn't tell you, did she?"
He blinked. "Tell me what?"
For a long moment Little Miss Calamity stared at him. Finally she sighed again and said," Mr. Grumpy, Miss. Music is pregnant."
Suddenly the ground disappeared from under him and he felt himself falling, falling into blackness. Then he felt someone shaking him and he opened his eyes to see Little Miss Calamity gazing down at him.
"Mr. Grumpy!" There was fear in her voice. "Mr. Grumpy, are you okay?"
He realized he was on the ground. He sat up, groaning. "W-What happened?" he asked.
"You fainted," Little Miss Calamity told him. She was on her knees beside him. "Are you okay?" She helped him back to his feet and he was a little unsteady, but after a moment he was fine. He pushed the Little Miss away.
"I'm fine," he murmured. Then he remembered what Little Miss Calamity said before he went down. He stared at her. "A-Are you sure?"
She seemed to understand. She nodded. "She took a test and it was positive. Mr. Grumpy, you're going to be a father."
He must have swayed because she reached out to steady him. "Oh, no, don't faint again," she told him.
Once he felt sturdy enough, he pushed her away again. "I have to find her!" he said, and he turned to leave, but Little Miss Calamity stopped him.
"Maybe you should sit down for a while until you feel better," she suggested.
He opened his mouth to argue, about to insist he needed to find Little Miss Music as soon as possible, but he did feel unsteady on his feet. Reluctantly, he agreed and let Little Miss Calamity guide him inside.
"It's best to wait for her to turn up anyways," Little Miss Calamity said as he sat on the couch. "With no idea of where she went, you could search all of Dillydale and still miss her somehow. Rest here for a bit and then go check her house."
Sighing, Mr. Grumpy realized she was right. He decided to stay and all he could do was hope Little Miss Music would be home later so they could talk. His head was spinning and his heart was pounding. He was going to be a father!
It was late when Little Miss Music arrived back home. It was dark so she didn't realize someone was sitting on her doorstep until he got up and walked forward. She gasped.
"Senpai!" she exclaimed, halting in front of him. "W-What are you doing here?"
Instead of replying with words, he reached forward and wrapped his arms around her, pulling her into a hug. She immediately started crying. He murmured softly to her, rubbing her back.
After a while he pulled away and stared down at her. He wiped away her tears. "Shh," he whispered.
"Oh, Mr. Grumpy," she sobbed. "I'm preg–"
"I know," he interrupted her and she stared at him in confusion. "Miss. Calamity told me," he explained.
"Oh." Little Miss Music didn't know what to say. She tried to read his expression, but it was too dark. "How do you feel about this?" she dared ask.
He was silent for a moment. "I was shocked at first," he admitted. "I kind of fainted when Miss. Calamity told me…"
Little Miss Music gasped. "Are you okay?" she asked, suddenly worried about him.
"Oh yeah, I'm fine now." He paused and then said," Now that I took a moment to let it sink in, I'm actually kind of excited."
She widened her eyes. "You are?" she gasped.
"Yeah." His voice was soft and she wished she could see his eyes but the darkness was unbreakable. She could just see his outline in front of her. He reached for her hands and held them tight. "I've always wanted to be a father," he confessed. "And I'm glad it's you that's having my child."
She felt warm all over. She was thankful for this Mr. Man. "D-Do you want to go inside?" she asked him.
She saw him nod, and, holding hands, they went inside Little Miss Music's house. Mr. Grumpy led the way to the bedroom and they laid down in bed together, staring at each other. Now that Little Miss Music could see Mr. Grumpy's face, she saw the love and happiness in his eyes, and for the first time since she discovered she was expecting his baby, she actually felt like things were going to be okay. She could see how much Mr. Grumpy loved her.
But there was still something worrying her.
"Mr. Grumpy?" she asked.
"Hmm?" he responded.
"Why did you hug Miss. Sunshine earlier?"
Suddenly he looked embarrassed and guilty. "First off, nothing happened between us," he said. "She was just helping me plan a special date night for you."
"For me?" Little Miss Music was touched.
He nodded. "Yeah, I wanted to do something special for you because of all the time we've been spending together."
"Oh, Senpai." Little Miss Music wrapped her arm around him and she dared to kiss him on the lips. Then she froze, unsure how he'd respond. She relaxed when he kissed her back.
They snuggled in bed, holding each other, and Little Miss Music felt truly happy and she could see that Mr. Grumpy was happy too which made her feel even happier.
