Hello there everyone, I am The Yoshi King, and I welcome you to my first ever story on this site! I have technically hovered on this site for several years as a guest reviewer under the name of "L" (feel free to call me that, if you wish), but after years and years, I finally decided to make an account for myself so I could start publishing my own stories. If I'm being completely honest, I meant to do this several months ago, but, well... life. Anyway, enough about me, onto what the story is about!

This is a Mario story, and will be the first in a trilogy. The main intent of this story is to draw together the many bits of star related lore that the Mario series has. The story will include bits from all over the Mario series, but I will still try to make it feel like it could be an actual part of the series, e.g. never going ridiculously dark, or pulling in a bizarre plot that feels like it should be from a completely different series.

The only other thing I would like to say is that I include a sort of footnotes in my stories, looking like this: (1). I've seen other stories on the site do this to help explain more obscure moments, and I thought it was useful, so that's what I will be doing too. The notes themselves can be found at the end of chapters.

Now then, on with the story!

The following story is rated K for mild action violence.

Disclaimer: I in no way own any rights to the Mario series. All rights belong to Nintendo and the respective owners.

The Cosmic Wars

Chapter 1: Nightmare

Mario Cautiously walked through a dense fog. He could not remember why he was here, or even where here was, but something told him that something powerful was on the other side of the fog. Mario was never one to run from danger, and as such had been trying to make his way through the fog for what had felt like hours. Finally, he saw something through the fog and ran towards it. He emerged from the fog and gasped at what he saw.

Mario was standing in the front of a graveyard. Feeling nervous, he crept towards the nearest grave stone and glanced at the engraving, before jumping back in horror. The name of the grave stone, was Luigi Mario. In horror Mario scanned the rest of the gravestones. Peach, Yoshi, Donkey Kong, even Bowser, all were marked on the graves.

Mario, unsure of what to do, began blindly running, feeling like he was going to throw up. He didn't get far before he smacked into something hard, and fell to the ground. He gazed upwards and saw a dark, shadow like creature that looked exactly like himself.

The Shadow Laughed. "This is what happens to those who oppose me," He growled.

The shadow then bent down, and with the force of one hundred bowsers, punched Mario in the gut. Mario went flying through the air, spiralling in the fog, never hitting the ground, just continuing to spin and spin until-

Thunk!

Mario opened his eyes. He was lying on the floor of his and Luigi's bedroom. The red covers of his bed were hanging down on him, most likely from where he had fallen. He sat up and looked around. The sun was shining in through the windows, meaning that it had to be morning already. He could smell bacon in the air, which most likely meant that Luigi was already down stairs making breakfast.

"It was just a dream," Mario said to himself, breathing a sigh of relief. Still, something about that nightmare in particular felt important.

Brushing it off Mario stood up and walked out of the room. Along the walls hung paintings of various events from throughout the Mario brothers' lives, as well as some pictures of the video games(1). Mario walked into the kitchen and saw that Luigi was indeed cooking bacon, along with hash browns and eggs.

"Hey Bro, good to see you're finally awake," Luigi grinned.

Mario glanced at the clock and to his surprise, saw that it was already ten O'clock.

"You really slept in today, huh?"

"Yeah, I guess so. I had some weird dreams too. I even woke up by falling out of my bed."

"Oh yeah, I thought I heard something," Luigi said, glancing up. " You okay?"

"I'm fine," Mario said, once again brushing off his worries about his dream.

Luigi brought over the food as Mario sat down. After they were done eating, Luigi began cleaning up.

"Hey Bro, could you go grab the mail?" Luigi requested. "I completely forgot about it when I woke up."

Nodding, Mario walked outside of the house towards their red male box. He reached inside and pulled out several letters. He walked back into the house, where he sat back down at the table and began sorting through the mail.

The monthly edition of Chef Hammerbro's Cooking Magazine; Luigi pile. This week's addition of the mushroom newsletter; shared pile. A catalog of the latest moustache styles; Mario pile. The Daily Newspaper because Luigi insisted that it was better than online news; Shared pile. A coupon for the hammer emporium; junk pile. Eventually, Mario reached the bottom of the stack and saw a pink envelope with a crown seal on it. Mario hurriedly opened it and quickly scanned the letter.

"Hey Bro," Mario called once he finished reading the letter. "We just got a summons from Peach's castle, asking us to get there by… 10:30."

Luigi darted over to the table, eyes wide, leaning over his brother's shoulder to see the letter for himself.

"Are you serious? It's already 10:20!" Luigi fretted.

"We need to hurry!"

"Why did you have to sleep in so late!"

"Hey, you're not dressed either!"

The Mario Brothers raced to their room. Luigi grabbed his clothes and ran to the bathroom to change while Mario frantically slapped his clothes on. The brothers then ran back into the hallway.

"Wait, I put my shirt on backwards," Luigi realized.

"There's no time to change it, we need to go," Mario ordered. " No one will notice anyway."

The duo ran out the door and hopped down the warp pipe that would take them to Toad Town. They popped out of the pipe and ran down the street towards the town.

"Hey Bro, want to race?" Mario asked. "Last one to the castle has to make dinner every day next week."

Luigi laughed. "Your on."

The Mario Bros raced through the town, darting around shop stalls, weaving through plants, and vaulting over the heads of unsuspecting Toads.

"Hey Bro, remember that time Bowser threw us away from Peach's castle, and we had to run all the way back just like this?" Luigi called after a few minutes of running.

"Oh yeah, that was pretty wild," Mario said as he vaulted over three toads at once.

"That was one of our craziest adventures," Luigi said.

"No way! That was kind of normal for us," Mario said. "What was really crazy was when we travelled around inside Bowser's body!"

"Yeah! That one was wild! And of course, who could forget that time when the Koopalings hid inside of Peach's birthday cake?(2)"

"Oh my gosh, I completely forgot about that one!"

"Seriously?"

"Yeah!"

The brothers stopped racing for a few seconds and burst into laughter. Then, still laughing, they continued running towards the castle. Luigi managed to reach the gate before Mario.

"I win!" Luigi cheered, touching the gate.

The Mario Brothers laughed again, before pushing open the gate, entering the castle. Unbeknownst to them, a figure sat in the bushes just outside of Peach's Castle, watching the Brothers carefully.

"They've arrived exactly as planned," the figure said into a walkie-talkie.

"Good," another voice replied from the communication device. "Soon, the world will bow before us, just as things were always meant to be."

(1): Basically, I like to think that the Mario world characters actually play the Mario games made by Nintendo. There have been lots of reference to Nintendo consoles in the games.

(2): The games referenced, in order, were: New Super Mario Bros. U, Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story, and New Super Mario Bros. Wii.

Well, that's it for the first chapter. The first few are probably going to be on the shorter end, but they should start picking up somewhere around chapter 6. Anyway, if you enjoyed, or even if you didn't, please leave a review and tell me what you think.

And I will see you all next time!
