Chapter 13

Over an hour passed as Ryu held Astraea, her Goddess had begun to cry uncontrollably after she had embraced her. But she didn't mind, 'Is this the reason Bell wanted me to stay with her? No, he knows I'll regret not spending time with her while I can. After all, once I return to Orario… I doubt I'll be able to come back anytime soon. Goddess must've known that, as did Bell.' She absentmindedly thought, slowly rubbing her Goddess's back.

Ryu pulled her crying Goddess in even closer; she didn't have the words to say so she didn't try to force out anything. Instead, she did what Bell had done for her before. She was simply there for Astraea to have a shoulder. "Ryu…" Astraea's voice burbled through gradually softening sobs.

Ryu glanced down, as her Goddess was leaning into her. "Goddess…"

Astraea shook her head, "Please, until you leave. Can you call me by my name?" There were still tears on her cheek, those that had remained after her shirt had been stained.

Ryu hesitated, what her Goddess was asking for… felt almost like a taboo. But she nodded, "If it's what you wish… Astraea."

A soft smile spread across her tear-streaked face, "Thank you, Ryu. That… means more for me than you realize."

Ryu felt like something was off about that statement, but she couldn't understand why, nor did she want to push her Goddess. So, she sat there holding her Goddess.

.

.

.

Another ten minutes passed as Astraea let out a sigh and stood tall again, she was only a few inches taller than Ryu. "Thank you, Ryu." She had a smile plastered onto her face; Ryu knew it was fake.

Ryu paused, "Godd… Astraea… I…" She hesitated, this wasn't the time to ask for something, but she… had to.

Astraea seemed to pick up on her hesitation, "Ryu… please… don't hesitate to… say anything…" Astraea stumbled over her sniffles despite keeping the same plastered smile on her face.

Ryu shifted uncomfortably, "There's something I want to ask you Astraea."

Astraea glanced around to see that they were still in the room. "How about we talk in the main room?"

Ryu nodded and followed Astraea out of the room, she took a quick glance back towards the carved piece of wood. Ryu glanced back towards Astraea, and what she found caught her by surprise. All the vulnerability that was released while in that room, it was completely gone. She stood tall; the tears that were still building were gone. Even the red rim around her eyes from crying was gone. 'What's going on. Is that room the only place she will let her emotions flow freely? That's… doesn't seem healthy.' Ryu was aware of the contradiction to her experiences, but she ignored it.

Astraea glanced back towards her with a perfectly normal smile, "Are you coming?" Ryu jumped a bit, but nodded and approached her. "So, what did you want to ask?"

'Now a few dozen more things.' But Ryu stuck with what she had planned to ask, "Astraea…" a small blush formed on her cheeks. "During the festival, you're supposed to dance with the one special to you… It's just… I don't… know how to." Ryu felt her cheeks burn with embarrassment; she had learned many things over the years, but dancing was one of the subjects she was a novice at.

Astraea giggled, which caused her embarrassed blush to grow. "Is that all? I can do that. You have until tomorrow to learn; do you think you can do that?"

Ryu shifted uncomfortably, "I… don't know." She looked up into her Goddess's eyes and with as much determination as she could muster, "But… I'll do what I can."

Astraea's smile spread wider, "Well, isn't Bell a lucky person. Well, let's get started."

.

.

.

Ryu, as always, was clumsy; she had stepped on Astraea's feet more than a dozen times, but her Goddess never complained or ever showed any signs that it hurt. But as the hours ticked by, she made fewer and fewer mistakes. "Good work Ryu, I suppose when you put the effort into learning something for someone you love can accelerate the results."

Ryu blushed at the compliment, but managed to not misstep, "I… Astraea…"

Astraea only chuckled as Ryu followed her elegant steps around the living room. The furniture had been moved against the walls in order to give them more room.

Ryu saw how Astraea's eyes flicked between her and then the clock, her indigo eyes widened. "Is it already one? Wow how the time goes by. Let's get some food prepared and go into the village. I'm sure your boyfriend is hungry and wants to see you."

Ryu blushed even deeper; the casual use of boyfriend felt embarrassing for the pure hearted elf. An evil smile grew on Astraea's face, Ryu did her best to raise her defenses as Astraea spoke, "Would you prefer I say partner?"

Ryu shook her head, "N… No, that's… fine. That… has a str… stronger connotation with… elves."

Astraea nodded, "Oh I know. It's similar to the usage for wife or husband in human cultures. If things go well, then you'll need to use that phrase eventually."

Ryu felt like passing out, the casual way her Goddess talked about these things. "Astraea… how can you so easily talk about these things? When you're supposed to be one of the pure Goddesses?"

Astraea had a tiny hint of a rosy tint to her cheeks. "I may be, but the vast majority of deities are fiends for entertainment of any kind. I'm just used to it."

Ryu understood what she meant and could only nod. She knew all too well how the deity's sought entertainment. "Right…"

.

.

.

Ryu sat on a small stool that stood outside Astraea's home with her Goddess sat next to her, eye sharp eyes scanning the area for a flash of white hair. It took a handful of minutes for her to find it, her cheeks burned a bit as she saw Bell working on moving a large log with the help of several adult men. All of which were struggling while Bell was hardly breaking a sweat.

"Ryu." The voice of Astraea broke her focus, so she turned to face her. "Why didn't Bell remove the scars? Surely, they offered to do it, it would've been simple during the healing process. I'm sure you could do it right now if you tried."

Ryu shook her head, "They did make the offer, but he stopped them, I offered as well, and he declined. He claims it's evidence of his survival. Although… I have a feeling they might not be removable."

Ryu felt her ears droop a bit, "Why do you think that?" Astraea's voice washed over her, as a new wave of regret filled her.

Ryu sighed, "During our… misadventure I only had enough mind to close his injuries, not heal them completely so the scar tissue formed. I think that due to the scars forming from magical means, that it might prevent the healing to remove them."

Astraea tapped her forearm, just loud enough that Ryu could hear it. "No… I don't think so. Have you asked him for his opinion?"

Ryu nodded, "I have, all he says is that it's the path that he has chosen." She fidgeted a bit, eyes focused on the ground, the small, wrapped package shifted from hand to hand.

Astraea chuckled, "Well, I'm going to ask him. He's already moving in this direction." This caused Ryu to flinch and look up to see Bell rapidly approaching them with his usual smile on his face.

X

Bell had spent several hours helping to gather wood for the bonfire that would be lit the next day. He was currently helping to move one of the large logs, it was just large enough that if he were to wrap his hands around it only the tips of his fingers would touch.

He was currently in the center of six other men all who were heaving and gasping for air. 'I could probably move this by myself, it would be awkward but doable.' He quickly dismissed the idea, he wanted to help not to show off how strong he was. Not that he thought himself particularly strong, he knew of others that were far stronger than him. "Heave! We're almost there!" The man leading the others yelled, spurring the others into action.

Bell shifted forward at the same rhythm of the others, he felt the rough bark scraping against the scars on his burned shoulder, but it didn't bother him. He had removed his shirt due to not wanting to ruin it, it was the best one he had at the moment. Besides, he knew the rough bark couldn't break his skin, unless something forced it to.

The voice shouted out again, "Alright! Here is far enough!" All the men shifted the log off their shoulders and collapsed next to it panting for breath.

The leader of the log carrying crew approached Bell, he looked to be just at the edge of his prime. A handful of graying hairs stood out on a rough bearded face. A short crop of black hair topped his head. "Bell…" Even as he spoke, he took a handful of deep breaths. "I thought you were… joking when you said you… could fell a tree in… a couple strikes."

Bell winced at the reminder. "Sorry about the axe Lorthic, I… hadn't expected it to explode after the second hit."

Lorthic sighed, "It's fine… it was probably about time to replace it soon." Bell doubted that, to him it looked brand new, but he wasn't an expert. The man scratched at his beard for a second before seeming to spot something interesting. "Hey Bell, looks like you got an admirer. Why not take the chance to take a break, this was the last log we needed. The others will split it up."

Bell turned to see Ryu and Astraea sitting on a pair of stools, Ryu glanced down to the ground, showing that her hair had been tied back, as she fiddled with a small, wrapped package. He couldn't help but chuckle, "Sure thing Lorthic, I appreciate it." Giving him a small wave he left to the older man chuckling.

As he approached, he slipped the shirt that was tied around his waist. It was clear to see they were talking about something, "Well I'm just going to ask him. He's already moving in this direction." Astraea's voice echoed softly through the air.

He saw Ryu's head snap upward; he did his best to give her a pleasant smile. She stood, and blushed lightly and took a few steps towards him. She held out the package, it was roughly square shaped wrapped in a light green cloth, "We figured you might be hungry."

He watched as Astraea poked her head around to be seen, "It's true, she tried her best."

Bell took the package and Ryu immediately turned toward Astraea, "Shhhh Astraea, I didn't do much."

Bell couldn't help but chuckle at the pair's shenanigans, "Alright alright." He spoke in a calming voice. It felt a little awkward, but he unwrapped the package to find a simple sandwich.

"Bell, why don't you at least sit while you eat." Astraea spoke softly, gesturing at the seat Ryu had vacated.

Bell glanced over towards Ryu and simply nodded, "Go ahead, looks like you've been busy."

Bell chuckled, "If I'm honest it's relatively easy work, although I do feel bad about destroying one of the axes." Taking a few steps, he sat and breathed out a sigh. He looked at the sandwich, as he was about to take a bite, he noticed that Ryu was staring at him intensely.

He managed to resist the urge to chuckle, after a second, he took a bite, then three. "This is pretty good." As he gave his honest approval, he could see Ryu's ears twitching in excitement despite her best effort to keep a straight face.

Astraea however couldn't hold back, as she started giggling. "To think Ryu Lion, The Gale would be so excited that her… partner enjoyed something that she made."

Ryu blushed heavily as Astraea spoke the word partner. She started tottering back and forth. 'She isn't going to…' Bell started to think.

Ryu shook her head violently, but Astraea spoke before Ryu had a chance. "Dear me, you don't look so good. Why don't you take a seat." She looked over towards Bell and winked then faced Ryu, "Oh but what a shame as there are no stools remaining."

Bell paused, but Astraea continued. "But I have just the solution, why don't you sit in Bell's lap? Or if that's too much for your elven pride, you can sit in mine." Astraea had a teasing smile.

Ryu looked like all the blood in her body was focused on her blush, even her ears looked like they could produce steam. She seemed to hesitate as she looked at Bell. "Yo… you don't… mind, do you?"

Bell blushed, but not as heavily, "I don't… mind."

Ryu inched closer, step by careful step, until she stood directly in front of Bell. She nodded and turned sitting on his lap.

His first thought was how warm and… soft she felt, his second was surprise as her short ponytail slapped him across the face. The third was the faint scent of pine needles that tickled his nose.

This only lasted a second as Ryu's ears lost all of the blush and she leaned heavily into his chest. "R… Ryu…" There was no response, Bell sighed. "And… I think she fainted."

He glanced over to Astraea and saw her holding her gut with one hand, as her other covered her mouth. Doing her best to not laugh too loudly, but she failed as her voice broke through the small gaps between her fingers.

After a few seconds she managed to calm down enough to speak. "I'm… happy to see her… act in such a way. I never… expected it." She took a deep breath, "I know you've already said so, but I have to ask again. Do you love her?"

Bell could see the seriousness in her eyes. So, he answered without any uncertainty or hesitation. "I do."

She let out a small smile as she nodded, "Good. If you didn't, after everything you've done with her. Well… let's just say I would get sent back to Tenkai immediately."

Bell didn't break her gaze, instead he spoke two simple words. "I understand."

Astraea smiled wider and stared up at the clear blue sky. "You know, it surprised me. She asked me to teach her how to dance, just so she could dance with you tomorrow. Despite her clumsy nature, she has a talent for it. I suspect that is due to her sword training."

Bell sighed, "I see."

Astraea turned to return her focus on Bell. "What's wrong? Have you never danced either?"

Bell tensed for a moment, but he shook his head. "I… have. Just once before, back when I didn't know how I felt about several people around me."

Astraea didn't speak for a few seconds, "I… understand. Do you want me to give you a crash course lesson?"

Bell paused for a moment, then sighed. "I… don't know if it would be appropriate. If Ryu wants to surprise me with what she learned, would it be fair for her?"

Astraea could only chuckle, "I appreciate that you are concerned about that, but I think you'd both enjoy it more if there were fewer fumbles."

Bell shifted to support Ryu as she began to tilt to one side. "I… no you're right. If you wouldn't mind, I would appreciate it."

Astraea shook her head, letting her walnut hair shift over her body. "I don't mind." She stood, "Well no time like the present." She shifted to stand in front of Ryu. She raised a hand and snapped her fingers in front of her face. "Ryu… wake up, I know you're embarrassed, but that's no reason to faint. Wake Up."

It took a few recitations of this for Ryu to slowly come to consciousness. "Good morning sleeping beauty. I need you to do something."

Ryu jerked to awareness as Astraea spoke. "Yes… sorry what is it?" Ryu shifted slightly, then stiffened as she must've felt what she was sitting on. She stood, with a blush.

Astraea couldn't help but sigh. "Ryu, you with us now?"

She glanced between Bell and Astraea, "Yes… I think so."

So, Astraea lightly hit the side of her head. "Good, now focus on something other than your embarrassment. Listen, I need you to find Larsa. But I don't know where she is. She'll need to keep watch during the festival. Can you find her and bring her to me? She's most likely somewhere on the outskirts of the village."

Ryu with a heavy blush still on her face looked between the two of us and nodded, before darting away. After a moment Astraea sighed, "That was easier than I expected. I suppose the power of embarrassment is just that powerful." She turned to face Bell, "Well come-on. We won't have much time until they return."

Bell chuckled, 'Was it really just that easy?' He thought, but he nodded and followed Astraea into her home.

.

.

.

Astraea turned to face him in the living room that had once again been cleared. She held out her hand, "Right Bell, for now show me what you know."

He didn't speak for a second, as he did his best to remember what Hermes, Miach and Takemikazuchi had told him. So, he got on one knee and held out his hand. "Might I have this dance?"

Astraea looked down at him, and with her hand grasped his. "With Pleasure." So, he took her hand and stood, and he started moving in a slow pattern. This lasted for a minute until Astraea spoke. "Stop, Bell, you're too rigid and you're standing too far away. Here, come closer."

Astraea pulled Bell in closer, until they were in physical contact. A blush started to spread across his face. "L… Lady Ast… Astraea. This… is a… bit too close…"

Astraea tilted her head, "No, this is about right."

Bell's mind raced to find a proper way to explain, but he couldn't. "Yo… your ch… chest."

Out of the corner of his eye he saw her look downward, a small blush formed on her face. "It's… fine Bell. I know you won't do anything… I'll trust you in this."

Bell gulped, 'Did she just scoot closer? No, it must've been my imagination.' He took a deep breath, he needed to calm himself.

.

.

.

Bell was sitting in one of the several chairs that were positioned around the dining table. He was clutching his head, as a headache was blossoming. Astraea had drilled as much information as she could in the hour that had passed.

Another few minutes passed Astraea set a cup of water in front of him. "You seemed to pick up on things quickly."

Bell chuckled despite himself, "My guild advisor says the same thing."

Astraea raised an eyebrow but sat down across from him. She took a sip of the glass that she had still been holding. "Maybe, but I think Ryu has more natural talent. Maybe that is something that is innate in her elven blood? Well, it doesn't matter."

Bell nodded, "I'm sure she does, I… don't have much general talent besides being able to learn quickly."

Astraea sighed, "Bell, I haven't known you for long, but I would disagree. I think you have talent in earning people's trust. That alone is rare, I also think you have a talent in quick decision making. I can't say for strategy as that is the best to pair with it, but there are several other things I can list if you wish."

Bell shook his head, "No… I'm alright."

Just as he finished speaking the front door slammed open as Larsa marched in, with Ryu quietly walking behind her. "You wanted to see me, Goddess!?"

Astraea pinched the bridge of her nose, "Yes Larsa, but please keep your voice down. I thought you would like to join us for dinner tonight. They…" Astraea waved over to Bell and Ryu who had moved to stand next to him. "Will be leaving the day after the festival. So, I thought you should at least get to know them a bit."

Larsa, placed a hand on her chin then nodded, "Sure I suppose, but I get to sit next to Goddess."

Astraea could only sigh, "Of course. Now I'm going to get dinner started."

Astraea started to stand, but Bell spoke up first. "No, let me." He glanced over towards Ryu, "She should spend as much time as possible with the two of you before we leave." With that he stood up and ignored the probing eyes from Ryu and moved into the kitchen.

X

Astraea watched, as Larsa and Ryu sat in relative silence for several minutes. Larsa didn't know Ryu and Ryu was never much of a social person. She even kept glancing at where the kitchen was, or more accurately where her lover was.

Astraea wanted to sigh, she had to start a conversation, or this would go nowhere. "Larsa, why don't you tell Ryu about that time with the goblin and the monkey."

Larsa smiled broadly, and Ryu looked extremely confused. "Right so, before we came to this village. We had been traveling around, with me acting as her bodyguard. We were walking down a normally well-worn road, when I heard a rustling sound coming from the bushes about thirty feet off the road."

Astraea was always surprised by her child's lung capacity, that… reminded her of a certain red-haired adventurer. Her mood took a steep dive, despite how much she enjoyed listening to Larsa's story.

Larsa seemed to take a deep breath, "Like I was saying, I investigated the sound and found a goblin standing at the base of a tree, and boy was it angry. I was about to attack it and finish it off before moving on my way when I noticed something else. There was a monkey throwing acorns at the goblin. I watched for a second, until the goblin grabbed an acorn and threw it back. I can't explain why, but I found the scene funny."

Astraea sighed inwardly; she could see Ryu's eyes beginning to glaze over.

.

.

.

Larsa's story rambled on for almost an hour, as Ryu was fully zoned out. "And that was the story of the goblin and the monkey." Larsa concluded.

Astraea could see Ryu's mind snap back into focus, "That's… very interesting." Astraea could tell she was lying but didn't bother to bring it up.

Still Larsa continued, "So, do you have any interesting stories? You're level 4 right? So, you must have something interesting."

Ryu glanced over to Astraea and shrugged; Ryu seemed to think about it for a moment. "Let me tell you a story about when I helped my friends win a war game."

Larsa's eyes widened in excitement; Ryu had just started to smile when Larsa spoke. "What's a war game?"

Ryu's head slammed into the table, "Is everything alright out there?" Bell voice echoed from the kitchen.

Astraea sighed, "Yes, everything's fine." Astraea half yelled back. "Larsa, a war game is a very serious matter where the children of gods battle in specific situations. The winner gets a prize that is agreed upon beforehand."

A light of understanding lit behind the girl's blue eyes. "Anyways." Ryu spoke, having lost all momentum in her story telling. "It all started when a god asked for my assistance in a matter that had been talked about throughout the city."

.

.

.

Ryu was just adding the final touches when Bell rounded the corner. "And that is how Ryu saved our Familia for the second time in two months." Bell added, as he placed four dishes out. He handed Larsa and Astraea a bowl with a healthy serving of Kielbasa, with potatoes and a thick sauce with a handful of vegetables on the side.

He handed Ryu a similar bowl, but it didn't have the sauce but had more vegetables, Bell placed another similar one for himself. He also handed out a chunk of Rye Bread to everyone. "Wait Bell you made all this; I didn't even know I had some of the ingredients." Astraea commented, looking at the bowl suspiciously.

Bell nodded, "I did, although I learned it from Mikoto. As for the ingredients I earned some favor helping out today, so when the story swapping started to take a while, I went around and gathered the ingredients."

Astraea sat there stunned, 'Did he really? I didn't even notice him leave, and judging by Ryu's reaction she didn't notice either.' Ryu was just sitting there in silence watching her partner.

Bell blushed a bit, "Well I hope you enjoy it."

She watched as Bell sat down and started to eat quietly. He took the first bit and smiled, "Well it tastes pretty decent to me."

Larsa was the first to launch into the food, she filled her mouth with a bit of everything. Astraea had to admit, despite the poor table manners, the fact that she looked a bit like a hamster made her smile.

So, Astraea took her fork and grabbed a piece of the pork sausage and ate it, the flavors burst as the food was consumed. "Wow… This really is good. I still don't know how you managed to slip by." She could taste the yellow sauce and understood why he didn't put any on Ryu's meal. 'He really is considerate of her tastes.'

Ryu seemed to be nervous, as she blushed a bit before starting on her food. Bell had sat next to her and was focused on enjoying his food, 'Is she really blushing just from sitting so close?' Astraea thought, but it quickly left her mind. This had been some of the best food she had eaten in… at least a year. So, she took the opportunity to savor the meal.

X

Ryu watched as everyone ate, she could smell the strength of the sauce and she was happy he didn't put any on hers. With Bell sitting so close, she could feel a bit of warmth trickle from his body into hers. They hadn't spent much time together today, but she didn't mind. She knew they couldn't be together all the time, but still she wanted to spend more time with him. 'Calm yourself Ryu, you'll spend almost two full weeks alone with him as you travel back.' The thought of spending so much time alone with her lover caused her mind to race. She imagined what could happen as they entered a small clearing of trees. It caused her cheeks to burn, her attention snapped back to reality as she realized she was the only one not to start eating.

With a calming breath she focused on her food. But even still the thoughts lingered deep in the back of her mind.

.

.

.

After they ate, Ryu and Bell went out into the village to help with setting everything up, due to their enhanced strength stats they were able to easily move the logs and into position for them to be cut. After that they assisted by going into the woods and hunting down various animals for the feast the next day.

By the time they got back with a pair of deer each, it was growing dark, so they assisted by helping set up the various paper lanterns that had been the day's work for several villagers.

Just as the last of the sun crossed over the mountains and the world underneath began to rapidly grow darker. The pair grew weary from all they had been doing during the day, "Bell… do you mind… if we rest under that tree for a bit?" Ryu asked, pointing to a tree a little outside the village.

Bell nodded, "Sure, I don't mind. Think I could use a seat." Ryu felt Bell grasp at her hand, she could feel a small blush forming, but she welcomed it.

.

.

.

The grass was soft, and the warmth that her companion radiated soothed the anxiety that had started to build in her. She had been ignoring or putting off thinking about their rapidly approaching departure. "Bell, can I ask a favor?" Bell only nodded, so she continued. "Do… you mind… if we sit like we did… before. In the deep floors." It was a bit of an embarrassing and selfish request, but she wanted to feel enveloped in his warmth.

Bell shifted closer and leaned his back into the tree they had been resting under, "Here you go. I don't mind."

It was a little embarrassing, but she crawled and sat between his legs and leaned into his chest. She felt his arms wrap around her waist as if to never let her go, or that he was afraid that she would vanish.

After a few seconds, it felt like she was in a warm blanket, despite not having anything covering her. At some point she realized that Bell had his chin resting on her shoulder with his eyes closed. She felt his hand wrapped around hers. There was any pressure, only warmth.

"Bell…" She found herself softly speaking, there was a part of her that was afraid to ruin the atmosphere that had been created. But all the same, she had to speak.

"What is it?" Bell whispered just as lightly.

She could feel the tips of her ears starting to grow hot, "Thank you Bell." She whispered, even to her they sound quiet.

Bell shifted a bit, "For what? I didn't do anything."

Ryu shook her head, she felt her tied hair impact against Bell, "No… you did, you chose me. Out everyone around you, you chose me. Even if I'm not worthy of your love."

She felt his arm raise and gently wrap against the top of her head. "Ryu, no more of that. I didn't choose, I simply listened to what my heart said." He paused for a second, "Do you understand Ryu, I didn't do anything."

Ryu disagreed, she thought of all the beautiful females that she knew and or thought wanted Bell. So, she gave up and sighed gratefully. "I… understand."

Bell chuckled, "I know you don't. But that's fine for now." He has seen straight through her.

This caused her to wonder something, "Bell… Can you be honest? If you didn't choose, sorry, listen to your heart. Who do you think you would've ended up with? I'm… just curious, curious about how lucky I am."

Bell was silent for a full minute has he seemed to give her curious question some thought. "Well, it's hard to say. But I could see two, no three possibilities. First, I continued to try to pursue Aiz which after everything is… well not a good idea. Second, I could attempt to form a relationship with someone else, who I might not have complete feelings for, which I see ending badly. Third, I don't get romantically involved with anyone." Bell sighs, "But I don't suppose that answers your question."

Ryu shifted, starting to feel uncomfortable but she remained silent. A part of her wanted to know the answer. "If I had to say, either Haruhime or Eina. Both have helped me a lot and have saved my life several times."

Ryu remained silent as she took in what Bell had said. "I understand Haruhime with what you've told me about everything with Ishtar Familia, but what about Eina?"

Bell sighed, "It's all the knowledge she forced into my mind. That and she was the first person to help me, well beside Goddess. She even bought me an arm protector when I started just to ensure that I would survive." Bell was silent for a few moments, "I, well after the battle across the city with Asterius. She risked coming down to the first floor of the dungeon to comfort me after I lost."

Ryu shifted, just barely enough to see Bell. "Bell… you know why…"

She was cut off as Bell spoke, "I do, for the longest time I'm confident she saw me as a little brother, I… just don't know when that changed or why it changed."

Ryu wanted to speak up, to say anything but she couldn't find the words. But Bell spoke up again, "Do you want to know something special." He had a levity in his voice, she could tell that he was trying to lighten the mood if only a bit.

She could only nod, he chuckled in response. "This is embarrassing to admit, but… I have a special place in my heart for elves."

Ryu wanted nothing more than to turn all the way around to face him, but she was too comfortable in the warmth. "As an elf, all I can say is that I don't know why. We are a hideous and cruel race."

She felt the hand fall again and chop her on the head, "I don't know why. Maybe it's because of all the stories that I listened to when I was a child. Maybe it's the ears. Maybe… it's because, once you trust each other it's a trust that is tough to sever."

Ryu sat there in silence for a handful of seconds, she was blushing at the way he spoke. "I… think it might be the ears, judging… by your recent actions…"

Bell gasped audibly, "That… hurts a bit, but I suppose you're not wrong."

After she felt her chuckling subside, she spoke up a sigh, "Bell, I think we should start heading back. It's getting late, and I don't want Astraea to worry."

She could tell Bell hesitated, but she could feel his muscles shifting as he looked upwards. "I suppose, it is really nice and comfortable here though."

Despite this, they sat there for another few minutes until they knew they couldn't stay any later realistically. "The festival…" Bell muttered as Ryu stood and helped Bell stand.

Ryu nodded, "The festival indeed. What are your thoughts on it?"

Ryu started walking, but at the pace of a leisure stroll. Her hand radiated heat as she felt Bell's grasp on it. The unwavering warmth, something she knew would never fade. "I'm not sure, I never had any festivals in my home village. So, I don't have much of an opinion, but I think it'll be interesting. The idea of burning away your sins…"

Ryu could understand, "I think I might need three pages if I want to write all of my sins." She gave an obviously fake chuckle, but that didn't stop her mind from remembering.

She felt the pressure in her hand increase, "Ryu…" Bell began to speak, snapping her away from her mental nosedive. "It's not easy, but you have to forgive yourself. It's not easy, I understand that, and I won't say I understand how you feel. I don't want to make any false claims like that. But when you start to feel your… self-image drop, just remember that I think you're an amazing person."

Ryu stood there, Bell had turned to face her, and she could see the sincerity burning through his ruby eyes. She could feel that hatred for herself seeping away as he spoke his truth. "Bell…" she whispered, "I… I know. I'll… try."

Welf casually strolled down one of the main thoroughfares of Orario, he knew his destination wasn't far. Still, he took his time, it had been a while since he had done this. He heard snippets of rumor and gossip, he heard the Hestia Familia get named many times, usually something about Bell or the war games.

The paving stones clacked under his shoes, as he clenched his hand tightly then he winced. 'Remember what Amid said.' He silently reprimanded himself. Still, he felt… exhausted, the Hestia Familia had grown to be a new family for him and yet the only one the general public talks about is Bell and for a good reason.

He sighed, as his line of thought continued, 'It's not like I can release my magic swords into the public, and I focus my whole attention on making new arms for the Familia and our allies. I still haven't been able to fix the frost damage on either Ouka's axe or my sword.'

He sighed, 'I really don't want to be the one to do this. But considering I can't do anything else right now… I suppose it's reasonable.'

He heard snippets of conversation as he passed, some were wondering if Bell was even still alive as nobody had seen him in over two weeks. But that's not what gave him pause, as he focused his attention on a conversation he could make out. "Did you hear about The King?" One person said he looked at them and there were two others standing around him.

The second opened his bearded face, "What, did he level? It's been ages since the last time that has happened."

The first one shook his head, "No, well not that I know of. They say he left Orario about a week ago. There hasn't been anything else about his existence spreading."

The third one rubbed his bare chin, "I don't know about that. I mean it's not impossible, but why would someone like that leave Orario? Unless there was something that popped up and the guild forced the strongest to examine it."

The second spoke up, "If that's the case, then that's even more frightening. There haven't been any statements…" There was a wave of people that decided to pass by, as someone bumped into Welf breaking his focus on the distant conversation.

A middle-aged human gave a small bow, "My apologies."

Welf just waved him off, still he checked himself just in case. There wasn't anything snaggable in his person at the moment, so he wasn't all that worried. The only thing he was sweating about was the slip of paper that was tucked into the inner folds of his garb.

It was a slip of purchase, for an eye watering amount. But he didn't check on it, he didn't want to reveal its location until he arrived at his destination. 'The Hostess of Fertility…' he thought, it felt like it had been ages since they had gone there last. But in reality, it's only been a month or so.

He sighed, the group he had been listening to wasn't there anymore, so he continued his march towards the Hostess.

He politely knocked on the door, he knew it was outside of regular business hours. The head of a silver haired human peaked out. "Sorry we're not open yet."

Welf nodded, "I know Syr. Is Mama Mia available? I was hoping to talk to her."

Syr looked him over carefully, "She won't be happy about being disturbed."

Welf nodded, "I expected that, I have prepared." He could tell by how the girl shifted back and forth that she wanted to say something. "Go ahead and speak about what's on your mind."

Syr jumped lightly in surprise, she observed him it seemed like her eyes to piece through Welf. Still, she gave a sweet smile, "Sorry, But I've got to ask about Bell and Ryu. How are they? Are they an item yet? Why haven't they visited? Do they hate me now?"

Welf flinched at the barrage of questions, but he did his best to answer. "Good as far as I'm aware, not that I'm aware of, that's one of the reasons I'm here, and I doubt it."

Syr's gray eyes seemed to narrow a bit, she pouted and crossed her arms under her chest, "You know more than that." Welf was about to open his mouth to respond, "Fine, keep your secrets. I'll go get Mama." She turned and left Welf standing on the first step, not sure if he should enter; he simply waited.

A black-haired cat girl peaked her head out the door, "You had to get Syr worked up didn't you, Nyaa. Well, you might as well nyenter."

He hesitated but entered. He knew how strong the waitresses here were, after they had gone to help retrieve them and even helped retrieve Bell and Ryu. "So nyaa. Did that silly elf finally nyaab that young boy."

Welf could only sigh, "I don't know. But please I'm actually here on official business from the Hestia Familia."

Chloe sighed, "Fiiinnne we can keep things professional." Welf suspected that talking to him was simply an excuse to not get her work done.

He stood by the door for almost a full minute, he watched how quickly the waitresses cleaned and got the pub read for business. He could hear heavy footsteps approaching, "Well you wanted to talk, here I am. What is it?"

Welf looked at Mia, her strong hands were resting on her hips. "We, the Hestia Familia, wish to rent out the entire pub for one night. In about two weeks, both Bell and Ryu are outside the city, and we want to welcome them back."

Syr stood up on her toes and whispered something into Mia's ear, "I know that. Go get back to work." She lightly tapped the silver haired girl on the top of her head.

She focused her full attention on Welf, "Well don't just stand there. Come sit at the bar so we can actually talk about the details."

So, he did, he never sat at the bar before and was surprised with how comfortable the stools were. "Well, why should I rent out the entire pub for your welcoming party?"

Welf shook his head, "It's… not only that." He sighed, he didn't want to give the exact reasons, but he knew he probably would have to. "You see… during our expedition, something happened. Something that traumatized Bell. From what I've learned, he has had nightmares almost every night since. He went out of the city for a couple reasons, but the main reason was to try to recover enough to tell everyone what happened."

Mia raised an eyebrow, "And why would he tell everyone here rather than at your Familia home?"

Welf nodded, "That's a fair question, we think it won't work there because of how we got the Familia home. Through a war game, violence. We want him to be somewhere he can feel safe and comfortable, he had been coming here for so long that this might just be the only real location available. His old home got destroyed, so that isn't an option either."

Mia nodded, "I understand. But do you know how expensive it'll be?"

Welf winced, "As it was Ryu's idea to come here, she warned us." He slipped a hand into his jerkin and pulled out a slip that had the Hestia Familia crest stamped on it.

Mia glanced over the slip, and sighed, "You're a bit short on the amount." Welf was about to open his mouth, but Mia continued before he could, "How many people will be here?"

Welf stopped the thought that was running through his mind, "Well let's see, besides the waitresses that helped out…" he counted out the number. "I would say ten to twelve people."

Mia nodded, "Very well, but I have three conditions and I'll accept the lesser amount of money."

Welf narrowed his eyes, "And what would those be?"

Mia smiled her wide smirk, "Well first, you…" she jabbed Welf in the chest with enough to hurt a bit. "And everyone else orders food and drinks, no one is going to be there if they won't eat. Preferably two rounds."

Welf nodded, "That's reasonable, what else?"

Mia continued, "Two, Ryu will have to do the dishes."

Welf raised an eyebrow, "Really? I don't know if she will want to."

Mia nodded, the smile never left her face, "Don't worry she will, even if I have to tie her to the sink. Third, I… just want your Familia to take good care of that clumsy elf. She… has had a hard life."

He noticed that Mia's expression softened as she glanced around the pub with a gentle smile on her face. "I can agree to your terms."

Mia thumped him in the chest again, "Good, now it'll cost me for that night. But I'll allow it." She held out a hand.

Welf shook it, "I appreciate your generosity." After a second, he stood from the stool. "I have to let Goddess Hestia know, thank you for your time and when we know exactly when we'll let you know." He turned after withdrawing his hand, he was just glad that it was his hood hand, turned and made his way out of the Hostess.

Mia was silent as she watched the young man leave. 'You've grown so soft.' She thought, she looked at the waitresses again. But she couldn't help the joy that was building in her heart, until she noticed all of them were watching her dubiously. "I don't pay you to stand and do nothing! Get back to work."

Her voice worked like a snap of a whip, all of them jumped "Yes Mama." They all shouted in unison, 'If only they all could be as lucky and happy as that elf.'

She silently mused, as she got back to checking the stocks of alcohol, even so she glanced over at Syr who had a smile on her face. She grimaced at that smile; she knew what that smile meant. 'She wants to say something, but it wouldn't be the appropriate place for such a thing.'

Mia couldn't help but sigh. "Syr that means you as well. Don't make me have you do the dishes the entire dinner rush."

Syr jumped at her statement, "Yes, sorry Mama." Syr turned and ran to the table she had been cleaning before Welf entered. She felt it, but Mia wasn't worried. 'Her guards are as loyal as ever.' She thought silently, making a few scribbles on her notebook. Hostility, that's just how that Familia thrives and works. The moment you grow even a single stat point weaker, your position Is taken from you, with few exceptions.

Mia couldn't help but sigh, she just wanted this farse to be over.

Ryu watched as Bell leaned over her, he had already attacked her overly sensitive ear. She could hear her own panting as mist formed in the chilly night air, the same air filled her lungs as she took a deep breath in.

Bell took that moment to touch her, the perfect mix of gentle and forceful. The touch left her with no doubt as to what would happen next, and she grew excited even more than she already was.

With agonizing slowness her sleep wear was removed, Bell watched for a second before leaning down and kissing her stomach, that touch caused her flushed body to ignite in a blaze of glorious heat. "I'm… ready Bell."

Time flashed by, until they were eventually exhausted, she couldn't remember how much time had passed but she knew she had been ravaged, but despite her elven nature she wanted more.

Ryu's eyes snapped open; she could feel the warmth that radiated from between her legs. She also felt the fluid that slowly leaked.

Ryu shivered as she shifted uncomfortably, 'A dream…' she thought silently, as the warmth of her sleeping companion radiated off him to her right. A touch of disappointment and relief washed over her, slowly ever so slowly the warmth faded away in its place a flood of embarrassment filled her.

She squirmed out of Bell's grip, 'Sorry, I need to… cool off.' With all the silence her enhanced status and experience would allow she moved down and out the door, took a left and moved past the dining hall until she found a room. When she opened it, a small room revealed itself. A stool sat in the corner, and a stone bath was placed against the wall.

She approached and touched the lever pump. After a few pulls water began to escape it and it filled the stone bath. She touched the water and shivered, 'It's cold… good.' She thought as she stripped down and took a frosty step over the ledge and lowered herself down. The water seemed to burn with its frigid temperature, but she didn't mind. The cold temperature held to distract herself from the memories of the already fading dream.

She felt her touch her stomach, in the same location she remembered Bell had kissed. Even somewhat mimicking the act caused her body to burn despite the icy water. After a few seconds, the water was no longer purely water, but she didn't act on her urges. Instead, she sat there in silence burning while also freezing.

.

Ryu breathed a sigh of relief, as the water drained away. She had washed herself free of her thoughts and cleansed her body of the filth from a dream she could no longer really remember.

Slipping on a spare set of clothing, she made her way back. It was still early; the sun wasn't even beginning to lighten the sky yet. She silently padded through the house barefoot, it was quiet. There was nothing, not even the normal creaking of wood as the temperature shifted.

Ryu shivered, 'Perhaps taking a cold bath was not the best idea.' She mentally questioned herself. Ignoring the abnormal stillness in the air she returned to the room she has been sharing with Bell. She couldn't help but smile seeing him sleeping somewhat peacefully. 'He looks like such an innocent rabbit…'

Ryu shook her head as that thought popped into her mind. 'Not now.' She reprimanded herself as she shifted her weight onto the bed and slowly eased herself back into his warm embrace. 'Despite what he said, I do think I am abnormally lucky to be here with Bell.'

She felt the warmth seep into her skin as it helped soothe the pain she knew would be coming, 'It's going… to be an… interesting day… I'll need to con… troll myself…'

.

.

The morning approached rapidly, Ryu woke to the sounds of creaking and the birds that chirped just outside the window. 'Morning already? That's a shame.'

She shifted and rotated her body to look at Bell, who currently had his eyes closed as soft breaths exited his mouth. She smiled softly and shifted to remove the lock of white hair that covered his left eye.

Ryu leaned in without thinking and kissed his cheek, 'I can't believe… how hard I have fallen for a human that I've only known for half a year.' After a second, she understood why. He had done so much for her in that short period of time, more than she realistically should have let him but as things stood, she didn't mind as she was happy and content.

Despite doing her best to ignore the flood of emotions, she couldn't help but let a few tears out. Only a handful fell until she noticed Bell shifting awake. She immediately did her best to master her emotions, she managed to partially succeed as the tears no longer fell but she hadn't had enough time to wipe the already existing ones from her lashes.

Bell glanced over and met her eyes half asleep. "What's wrong?" He asked gently, tightening his grip, more warmth poured into her.

Ryu blushed slightly, she shook her head, "Nothing, just happy."

Bell smiled, "I'm glad if that's the case. You deserve to be happy." She watched Bell close his eyes and let out a deep breath. Then reopen and stare at the ceiling.

An emotion bleed from her heart, one which she told herself to control. She knew it was easier said than done, but still she blushed heavily. She thought about the best way to make her request, until she just blurted out what she was thinking without thinking. "Bell… I… almost feel like… I'm becoming an… amazon when I'm around you."

Her face erupted into a sharp crimson; she couldn't believe she had actually said those words. She felt Bell shift so that he could face her directly. Which was the complete opposite then what she wanted. She glanced up to see his ruby eyes watching her.

Somehow the blush grew even redder, as her heart and nervousness increased with each passing heartbeat. "What do you mean when you say, 'Feel like an amazon'?"

Ryu didn't want to say anything, but there was no easy way out for her. She was silent for a second until she released a nervous sigh and accepted whatever was to happen. "Bell, this is going to be embarrassing to admit, but when I'm around you… I want to do more." She twitched her body that Bell had still been holding onto.

She took a short breath and forced herself to continue, "I want… to go further… but I'm not ready for that final step. Not yet. I… want to be fully embraced by you during the night."

Ryu could see Bell's face starting to turn crimson, but still she continued. "I… want to be more physical. But… I can't because my elven nature is strong enough in this case to reject that, and it's… causing a conflict in my heart." She paused to consider what her next words were going to be, but in the end, she just let it out. "Even this morning… I had a dream… one where we did everything, and it felt wonderful. I'm just… confused I think."

Her words started coming out quicker and quicker, now that she had started to confess this, she couldn't stop herself. "I don't know… how long I'll be able to wait. But Bell…" Her voice caught in her throat, 'Please stop me from doing anything too reckless.' She thought about what her voice couldn't manage.

Bell let out a breath, "I've said this before, but I'm the same to some degree. I don't think I'm ready to… progress that far, not yet. But when you're ready, let me know and I… will be as… well."

Ryu knew her blush wouldn't fade anytime soon, 'It's… interesting to think that even two months ago I would consider hand holding to be going too far, and here we are talking about going all the way in the future.' Ryu wanted to chuckle at the blatant example of how far she has fallen for him.

Ryu let out a sigh of relief. "I'm… glad to hear that, Bell, can I ask a favor of you…" They laid staring at each other only a couple inches away from touching.

Bell leaned forward until his forehead gently pressed against hers. "Anything."

Ryu gasped at the warm and gentle contact, "Would… you be… willing to… tease me… occasionally? Until… we're both… ready for… the final stage?"

Bell blinked silently twice, three times. As she waited for an answer she felt like her mind was starting to boil from the blood that had invaded her cheeks and ears. it felt like waves of heat should be radiating off her ears.

She forced her words to continue, "I… just… believe it… would make that… moment more special… to help… enjoy that… moment… more."

The embarrassment caused her to stumble over almost every word, but she managed to make her selfish request, even if the reason was a lie. Judging by how the light from the window shifted off his ruby eyes, she believed that he didn't believe her obvious lie.

Bell leaned back a bit, "Alright. I understand."

Ryu blinked in surprise, "You do?"

Bell nodded, "I do. If that's what you want to ask, I can… do that much."

Ryu let out a sigh of relief, she closed her eyes for less than a second. "Than…" Her thanks was cut off as she felt the tip of her be stimulated.

She opened her eyes as a soft moan escaped her throat, Bell had leaned over with the distance he brought and nibbled lightly on her ear. A wave of pleasure passed through her body, even a bit of moisture formed in that single moment.. Then the sensation stopped as Bell sat up. "Well I think we should get ready. It's going to be a long day."

Ryu gapped at her companion, in a weak voice she called out. "Wait? Is that it?"

Bell nodded, "It is, that's what you get for lying. Besides… I doubt your Goddess would like to hear that again."

Ryu crossed her arms with a blush, and started to pout a bit. But she sighed, "Alright, fine. But that's a bit mean." She sat up with a sigh of disappointment, "But I guess you are right."

Even as they got dressed for the day they knew would be eventful, that wave of lost potential pleasure bothered her. Still she sighed, she wouldn't force it as it was her idea that he was being lenient with.

They opened the door, fully dressed for the festival and saw Astraea already in the process of making breakfast. "Good morning you love birds." She spoke with a soft and gentle smile.

Review Responses:

meth0d: Glad you enjoyed it, and yes steamy indeed. I plan on trickling in moments as the chapters pass. I think you will like the next chapter. Have a good day.

Blazeburn006: Ignored for fat thumbing again.

Fat thumb again (Blazeburn006): Fluff can be good and I'm glad you enjoyed the fluff. Astraea I find really interesting to write in these chapters. But yeah... Her nausea and what not is not pretty. As I have now have the image of Mothra stuck in my mind. I know I have said about how ultimately it is up to Bell to accept and move forward her words can only do so much. Also, will the elf get payback on the rabbit? Time will tell.

pix25: She is indeed. Hard to say not.
