Hey everyone, a new chapter released. Like I've said a few times now, this is the last uploaded for Sylphid's at a weekly rate. I'm going to continue working on chapters but slowly as I consider where I want things to go in comparison to the original. I hope you all enjoy the chapter. -EG

P.S. For anyone curious, the next thing I release will likely be the next Judicial Heart chapter. Just thought I would share. -EG

Chapter 16

Bell held Ryu's hand tightly, they were sitting in the common room of the Hearth Manor, and their packs were sitting next to the couch they shared. Lili and Welf were gathered with obvious looks of curiosity on their faces. They could easily see the open display of handholding. Welf had a soft, almost satisfied smile, while Lili seemed to be glaring at Bell.

Despite the nature of what they were going to announce, he was calm, almost at peace. That didn't stop him from sweating due to the idea of how Hestia would react, especially after what happened when Haruhime had joined the Familia.

'Can someone please say something?' His mind repeated a couple of times. He wanted to know what happened, especially after how Haruhime reacted to seeing him. "So… how were things while we were gone?" Bell decided to pose the question as an icebreaker.

Lili's displeasure only seemed to increase, as she crossed her arms under her chest. Welf on the other hand chuckled, "I suppose it is a little awkward just sitting here looking at each other. I'll tell you, although I am curious about what happened between the two of you."

Welf shrugged, "Well. The only real thing of note was that we went on a mini-expedition to gather funds. It… wasn't successful. But we gained some important information."

Bell noticed Lili tilt her head slightly, "Welf… what about…"

Welf nudged the prum in the side, "Now now, I didn't want to ruin that surprise."

Bell just felt confused, "What… surprise?"

Welf just shook his head, "You'll find out soon enough." He seemed to be thinking about something but shook his head. "Don't worry, it's nothing bad for what it's worth. If anything I would say it's a good thing."

Bell narrowed his eyes slightly but ultimately nodded. "Alright… but I would like to know by the end of the day."

He glanced over to Ryu, who had a slight blush on her face and eyes were looking at the floor and nowhere else. "Breath Ryu… I'm sure it'll be fine."

Ryu shifted in place, as she took a deep breath in. "Right… breathing. That's a thing I should do."

Welf started chuckling, Bell looked over at him and raised an eyebrow. He waved his hand in front of his face, "Sorry. I just never imagined the person who was the one that helped hold off the Goliath, and distracted more than half of Apollo Familia, would act like this. I… just find it funny that's all."

Out of the corner of Bell's vision, he watched as her ear started turning crimson from embarrassment. "Alright, I think…"

He didn't get the chance as a loud shout could be heard from upstairs. "WHAT! BELL'S BACK!" It was Hestia's voice.

Bell couldn't help but let out a soft sigh, as he heard a rapid thumping from the second floor. Hestia rounded the corner with her eyes wide with… some emotion Bell couldn't place. She started running straight towards him, just as he was about to brace himself for the impact. He was pulled out of the way, causing Hestia to launch straight over the couch.

Welf couldn't hold back his laughter anymore, Bell was confused until he noticed Ryu had wrapped her arm around his. 'She pulled me out of the way?' He could see the crimson on her face slowly expanding as each laugh escaped Welf.

Hestia stood and looked down at Ryu, who while sitting was almost as tall as the Goddess, "Ryu… why did you do that?"

Ryu lowered her head and gave a half-sitting bow. "I'm sorry Lady Hestia, I… felt danger for Bell and acted on instinct."

Hestia huffed, "Fine. Bell I…" Hestia stopped, she tilted her head to the side a little. The obvious look of confusion on her face. "Bell… why… do you feel different? It's almost like… no." She chuckled, "No. That would be impossible." She shook her head and laughed, but it felt forced to Bell and he was sure everyone else felt that way.

"I'm… not sure what you're talking about." Bell shook his head, 'That's… strange. It's the second time I've been told that today.' He looked over towards Welf and Lili, "Do I feel different to you?"

Welf had stopped laughing when he realized how Hestia was acting, he placed a hand on his chin to think. "No… I don't think so. Not that I can tell at least."

Bell noticed Haruhime coming down the stairs as Lili started speaking. "Lili doesn't think so. Is it something only Gods can feel?"

Bell shook his head, "No. I was told something similar already today, and it was by someone that doesn't even have a blessing… as far as I'm aware." Bell glanced at Ryu who only shook her head.

Hestia sighed moved around the couch and sat in her designated seat, "Well, for now, I'll say it doesn't matter. We can investigate this further later. It is a strange feeling though. Anyways, Judging by how close you two are and the fact that you are holding hands does that mean you two are a pair now?"

Bell paused for a second, as Ryu spoke up, "Yes… Lady Hestia." Bell was a little surprised by the fact she openly admitted it so easily, even if it was obvious.

Bell scratched his chin with his free hand. "We… debated on hiding it, but figured it would only lead to trouble if we did."

Hestia nodded with a heavy sigh, "I guess it was inevitable. Well… congratulations Bell… Ryu." She focused her attention on Ryu more specifically. "Did Astraea open your Falna for transfer?"

Ryu nodded, "Y…Yes, she did." Bell felt her grip tighten a small amount.

Hestia smiled slightly, "Well. Do you want to get that done now or would you rather wait a little longer?" There was a sense of worry or hesitation in her voice.

Ryu sighed, "Let's… do it now. I… would rather rip the proverbial bandage off now." She stood, with Bell's hand still in her grasp. She looked down, "Bell…"

Bell shook his head, "Go ahead, Ryu. I'll place our packs up." He loosened his grip, and Ryu seemed to have to force her hand free.

She gave a slight sad smile. "Alright…" She glanced up and Hestia, "Right… Lady Hestia…"

Hestia stood and nodded, "Right… follow me."

It only took a second for Hestia to walk out of the room, as Ryu did. Bell noticed her eyeing him for a second until she was forced to look away. Bell leaned back on his couch and looked up to the ceiling.

"Well… Bell, do you want to let us know what happened?" Welf's voice was the first one to speak up.

Bell looked at him but hesitated. "Where's Mikoto? I would like her to be here if I am to tell the story."

Haruhime's tail wagged a little, "Mikoto is helping…"

She was cut off by Welf, "Mikoto is busy helping… Chigusa pick out a gift for Ouka." For some reason, Bell could tell Welf was lying to him, but he decided to ignore it.

"Well… if that's the case. I will have to wait. I… would prefer to have Ryu here to explain some portions of it." Bell bowed and asked something that was bothering him. "Please… I hope you all will accept that Ryu and I are in a relationship…"

Welf just chuckled, "I don't mind. It just means I have even more reasons to tease you." Welf paused for a second. "Wait… what happened to your armor? No wait, I don't want to know. I'll… just get started on a new set."

Haruhime clapped her hands, "I'm glad you chose Ryu. You two fit together so well."

Bell scratched the back of his head, "Right…" He glanced at Lili who had her arms crossed, and had sunk into the corner of the chair she sat in.

He didn't push her, he was all too aware of how she felt. He nodded, "Alright. Well, I need to get our packs away." He stood and looked at the three in front of him, "It really is good to see you all again." He gave a small smile, before standing grabbing both packs in a single hand, and started making his way towards the bedrooms.

He was disappointed that Lili didn't give her blessing, but that would be something he could live with. Still, he walked slowly, taking in the air that had been contained within his home. He opened Ryu's room first as it was the closest, it was bare of decorations. He didn't fault her, his room wasn't much better and he'd lived there much longer.

He quickly placed the pack on the floor leaning up against the frame of the bed. Took a moment to just breathe, then exited the room. His room was dark, the blinds had been shut sealing the room off from the light outside. He just tossed his pack towards the bed and immediately opened the blinds letting the light filter in through the window.

He couldn't help the smile that spread across his face as he looked around. "I'm… home." He whispered, first thing first he opened the pack and pulled out the two letters. He placed the one from his Grandpa on the nightstand next to the bed. The one Astraea gave him, he stared at it for a long time, he just had a terrible feeling about it.

Before he could hesitate anymore he broke the seal, technically Astraea wanted him to only open it after Ryu had Hestia's blessing. But he figured it was close enough. Inside was an emblem much like the one he got from his gramps, there was also a letter. He fully expected it, but still, he hesitated to pick it up.

So he stalled for time by taking out the emblem inside the envelope. It showed Astraea's symbol, a downward-facing sword with the wings of justice wrapping around it. He looked at it before placing it on the nightstand with the other letter. He was out of options to stall, so he took a breath and unfolded the letter. The penmanship was beautiful, but he didn't have the attention to notice that. He was looking at the first three words that were written down. 'Bell, I'm sorry.'

He hesitated but pushed through to read the whole thing.

Bell, I'm sorry. I'm sorry for the burden I will put on you with the information contained in this letter. I hope you will forgive me, regardless this page isn't infinite and neither is my time.

First, let me thank you. Thank you for giving me the opportunity to see my child… one last time.

I suppose that the best place to start is my current state. My Arcanum is being drained, slowly… painfully. My biggest fear however was leaving my only child truly alone. I know what you might be thinking, 'What about Larsa?' That… well it was just an illusion I forged with a tiny portion of my Arcanum.

I'm sorry, let me take a step back. The reason why my Arcanum is being drained. I suppose that is where I should start this story. A little over a year ago, I encountered a creature that we thought was defeated or sealed over a thousand years ago. It thrives and feasts on unique energies. Spirits were its original source of nourishment… but when gods descended it must have been able to consume our power as well.

Either way, it attacked me and just barely touched my leg. That one touch was enough for it to form a connection to me. My only other child at the time did her best to fight the monster off, but ultimately failed. She… wasn't even level two. I fled as she was consumed by that monster, I've lived with that shame again.

Three months passed and I knew that I wasn't going to last another year, so I sent a letter to Orario or more specifically Ouranos in the hope that Ryu would get it. She did, what I didn't expect was that she would bring a boy with her. The way the two of you worked together to get me out of harm's way was beautiful. But… I couldn't hold back my emotions, so I called out to Ryu not believing my eyes.

Then it happened, faster than I could blink you were there to save her from my mistake. Which caused you to lose your life. I know… I know I'll get there soon enough. Ryu's reaction was so extreme… seeing her desperately casting her healing magic over and over broke my heart. So when she gave into the mind down, I knew I had to do something. I… just didn't have a choice, I wasn't going to live much longer, on Genkai, anyway so I used my Arcanum to save you. How I'm still allowed to be here is a miracle of its own.

Seeing the two of you, I had hope that even after I'm gone she will still be happy. So this is my last request Bell, please… please make sure Ryu doesn't do anything drastic when she learns of my fate. I know it won't be easy, especially if the two of you are a couple before you read this. I know it will be a long and hard road for the two of you, but I have faith in the two of you even from the small bit I have seen.

Yours Astraea

P.S. I always wanted to see grandkids, but knew it was unlikely. But now… I don't think it's impossible. Tell Ryu I'm sorry and that I love her like a daughter.

Bell felt something in his heartbreak. He knew he couldn't keep this information to himself, but he also didn't want to destroy the recovery he had seen in Ryu. He also knew however that if he didn't tell her it would hurt so much more later.

So, he tucked the letter into his pocket and let his emotions flow. He hadn't known Astraea long, but the knowledge still hurt him greatly.

Sadness, anger, and depression all washed through his mind like a tidal wave. He curled into a ball against the headrest of his bed and simply waited, he knew that Ryu would come by eventually to tell him to possibly swap places and have Hestia update his status.

He only had to wait a couple of minutes before a knocking sound could be heard. "Bell…" Ryu's voice echoed through the door. He couldn't respond immediately. So Ryu knocked a touch louder, "Bell!"

X

Ryu followed Hestia through the halls towards the same small office where she tried to transfer her before. Her heart was racing, both with excitement at what the future holds but also with anxiety. She was about to lose the blessing that tied her to Astraea, she knew her skills meant that she would always have that connection. But that did little to ease her nerves.

Hestia opened the door and walked through without any hesitation. Ryu stood at the door for a second or two before she entered the room. 'I've made my choice.'

Ryu closed the door behind her as she heard Hestia sigh. "What am I going to do with the two of you?"

"Lady… Hestia?" Ryu asked, slightly confused.

Hestia shook her head. "Really it's nothing. But at the rate you two are progressing. Should I expect to have half-elf grandchildren running around in a year? I honestly don't think I'm ready for that."

Ryu blushed and nearly fainted, but Hestia continued. "Although, having someone call me grandma, while a little painful, would lighten my mood no matter how dark."

Ryu stumbled forward, she caught herself on the stool that sat in the center of the room. "Lady Hestia!" Ryu managed through a half-shot.

Hestia shook her hand in front of her face. "Sorry… Sorry. I'm mostly teasing, I noticed how tense you were. You're afraid to lose the blessing Astraea gave you. Is that correct?"

Ryu hesitated but nodded. "I… have two skills that will always tie my back to Goddess Astraea. But it still hurts." She lowered her head, doing her best to hide her worry. Even as she felt her heart rate increase.

She heard Hestia walk a few steps closer. Then, a light thump against her forehead. "Now none of that. You should be happy with everything going on." Ryu didn't agree so Hestia continued speaking. "Ryu, let me tell you a secret. Unless I want to wipe all the previous work Astraea had done and completely rewrite everything, which would just end with the same result anyways, her writing will still be there."

Ryu tilted her head in slight confusion at what Hestia was getting at. So Hestia went to a nearby shelf pulled a book out and opened it to a random page. "Your falna is like this book." She placed her hand on the pages that led to the front of the book. "This represents all of what Astraea has done." She moved the hand towards the pages that went to the back. "And this will be all that I will do in the future. Just because I am continuing the story doesn't mean all that Astraea has done will be erased." She snapped the book shut, "The entire book represents your falna. Does that make sense? Unless I deliberately go back and rewrite everything, she will always be in your falna."

Ryu closed her eyes and took in what Hestia said, trying to process the idea. She couldn't help but let a small smile appear after a second, "I understand." Ryu opened her eyes and looked at Hestia with new resolve. "Alright, Goddess… I'm ready."

Hestia let a small smile show, before pulling a needle out from a draw in the desk. "Very well. Show me your back." Ryu blushed slightly but pulled her rough traveling tunic off showing her bare back to the Goddess.

She felt Hestia staring at her back for a moment, "Oh… before I forget. Goddess Astraea said that I achieved level 5, but didn't push it through. She wanted that to be a gift for you."

"Well, that was nice of her. Alright, are you ready?" Hestia asked as she stood on a small stool, Ryu nodded and at that moment she felt the warm splotch of a gods ichor fall onto her back. Then the room started to glow blue.

"Geez what's up with these stats? Not only that, but they increased a fair bit as well from your last update." Hestia muttered as she focused on working.

Ryu shivered for a second, "Wait… then that means Bell's skill…"

Hestia prodded a spot on her back. "Right, you have a couple of choices in terms of Developmental Abilities. Mage, Treatment, and Spirit Healing."

Ryu shifted uncomfortably, several thoughts were running through her mind so she decided to voice her thoughts and possibly get some insight from Hestia. "Well, those are some tough choices. Spirit Healing would probably be the easiest to skip on, mostly due to how Astrae Varma increases mind, so having the ability to regenerate the mind is less valuable. Although it could help counteract the mind drainage from Mind Load."

Ryu took a breath, "Mage is tempting, due to increasing my magic in general, but I also think it will affect the… other magics I have access to. Treatment is just as tempting, mostly due to Hestia Familia not really having a healer. So I could fill that role, especially if it works with my skill."

She thought for a full minute before making her decision. "I… think I've made my decision. Let's go with Mage. As much as I am tempted to take Treatment, I think Mage will help more in the long term."

"Alright!" Hestia exclaimed excitedly. "And congratulations on now being level 5, and officially a member of the Hestia Familia!" Ryu felt a piece of paper placed on her back. "Here is your sheet now."

Ryu gasped at the numbers written on the sheet of paper. "I…"

Hestia smiled, although a little sadly. "It is something, isn't it? It's why I've been so secretive about Bell's skill. But like I said before, I'll let him know when I update his status. Now do you have any questions for me?"

Ryu thought, and thought. "No… I think the majority of what I would want to talk about was covered last time. Just one question… did you manage to rent out the Hostess?"

Hestia nodded, "That we did. Mama Mia is just waiting for our notice. As you all are back, I was thinking about it in two or three days." Hestia grabbed a small piece of cotton and covered her finger that had a drop of her ichor still clinging to it.

"I… think that would be a good idea. Bell has been practicing telling the story on our travels back… just as I have been trying to use my skill. We've both made progress… but we are a little bit away. But I have faith in Bell that he'll manage when the time comes." Ryu smiled and stood, her heart was filled with certainty. She knew her hero would pull through, it would just take some time.

Hestia took a step back, "Right. Well why don't you go get Bell, I'm sure he will want to level soon or right now." Hestia moved and sat behind the desk. A soft warm smile on her face. Ryu turned to leave, but Hestia stopped her. "Oh… And Ryu, congratulations on forming a partnership with Bell. I hope you bring each other happiness."

Ryu blushed at Hestia's phrasing. "I… thank you Goddess… I'll… go get Bell now… yes." She hurried out of the room, Hestia was chuckling as she closed the door.

She walked down the hall and took a turn to where the bedrooms were, she didn't know exactly why but she guessed Bell would be there. She opened her door, just to make sure. The room was empty and her pack was placed to the side. It was what she had expected, so she went to the next door and knocked "Bell…". There was no response but she did hear something behind the door.

So she knocked again and called a bit louder. "Bell!"

It was a painfully long second before Ryu heard a response. "It's open." If she wasn't mistaken, his voice sounded halfway hollow.

So she opened the door to find the room lit up brilliantly by the open blinds. His pack was resting on the foot of the bed and Bell was curled into a ball.

X

He took a deep breath. "It's open." He did his best to hold his voice steady but knew he probably wasn't very convincing.

The door opened showing a Ryu with a smile on her face. That smile faded rapidly when she saw Bell's state at the moment. "Bell!" She half shouted, throwing the door shut, and moved quickly through the room. "Bell… what happened?"

Bell shook his head, then took a deep breath trying to calm his nerves. "Just received some unfortunate news." He glanced at Ryu for a moment, "Did Goddess give you her blessing?"

Ryu nodded, "She did." Bell could tell she was hoping for an explanation, mostly judging by how her ears shifted downward slightly.

Bell with some effort uncurled, "Well how did it go? Did you push through your level?"

Ryu seemed to hesitate, "We did… my stats even went up from our travels." She paused and took a handful of steps closer until she was right at the edge of the bed. Bell felt the bed shift slightly as Ryu sat. "Bell… what happened?"

Bell only shook his head. "Ryu… I'm sorry. I… just need to talk to Goddess real quick." He shifted out of the bed until he was sitting right next to her. He leaned over and gently placed a kiss on her forehead. "It'll be alright. Just give me a few minutes to gather my thoughts and I'll explain… alright?" He put a smile on his face, but he could tell it would obviously be a false one.

Ryu blushed at the physical contact, but reached out and grasped his hand when Bell took a step. "Wait… Bell. Do you promise? Promise that you'll tell me?"

Bell glanced back, he had a slightly more genuine smile. "Ryu… I promise. I always try my best to keep my promises."

He could see disappointment in her eyes, but she obliged and let his hand go. "Right. Well, I'll probably push my level through. So… maybe tomorrow we can spar some to help get used to our levels." He did his best to change the subject, as he took a step forward.

He could feel his eyes burning, wanting to water from the situation at hand. But, he resisted at least for a bit. He turned and made his way towards the door. "Bell…" He gave her a quick glance, "I… love you." Her cheeks burned as she spoke.

Bell blushed, he could feel the heat pulsing through his veins. "I… love you too Ryu." He said it, and he meant every single word. He gave a more genuine smile, before exiting the room.

Bell wasted no time, he was happy that Ryu was opening up. It had been two weeks since they became a couple, and they had spent the majority of the time alone. Still, she only said that a couple of times, each time she was a stuttering and blushing mess, a part of him loved seeing her embarrassed side. "Focus." He whispered as he slapped his cheeks.

He knocked on the door to the room that he knew was Hestia's office. "Come in!" Hestia shouted.

Bell took a deep breath and opened the door. "It's Bell." Hestia was sitting behind the desk, as she looked at a piece of paper.

Hestia looked at him and her smile faded rapidly. "Bell… Come in, close the door, and tell me what's wrong."

Bell couldn't help the sigh that escaped his lips. But he obliged, closed the door, and sat on the stool in the center of the room. "I… just received some pretty bad news… Lady Astraea… isn't with us anymore."

Hestia just sat there staring at him. "Bell… how… how do you know? Ryu still had her blessing."

Bell shook his head, "The transfer is what Lady Astraea was waiting for." He reached into his clothing and pulled out the letter. "Here, it's explained in this letter. She… gave it to me and ordered me to not open it until Ryu transferred over to Hestia Familia."

He stood and placed it on the desk in front of Hestia. "Do you mind updating my Status? I… need to get back to Ryu. She could tell something was wrong, I don't want her to be alone for too long."

Hestia hesitated but nodded, "Right. Here remove your shirt. Also, do you want to level?"

"I do," Bell muttered with a muffled voice as she slipped his shirt off and turned around so Hestia could more easily access his back.

It only took a second before he felt the warm Ichor fall onto his back. Hestia gasped after a second. "What's wrong?"

Hestia hesitated, "I… thought something felt off… but this is…" Bell was starting to grow concerned, fortunately, Hestia continued after a second of probing at a spot on his back. "Your… race has changed…"

Bell stiffened, 'Is she talking about what Grampa had said in his note?' He took a deep breath, "There are several things I… need to tell you. But if you don't mind, that can wait until later. I… learned… a lot… about myself and my history."

He could feel Hestia staring into the back of his head. "A… alright. I have something to tell you as well. But you're right, we can talk either later or tomorrow."

A minute passed as she continued working. "Alright, so you have a couple of options for Developmental Ability. There is Strong Body, Chain Attack, and Mage. Truth be told I'm a little confused by the Mage, but it's an option."

Bell thought, "Do you know what Chain Attack does? I can guess at what Strong Body does."

Hestia prodded a small section, "Looks like if the user has a continuous string of attacks, it increases the power of them." Hestia had a finger stuck onto his back as she gave him time to think.

"As much as my instincts tell me to take Chain Attack. I think I'm going to go with Strong Body. Mage would be wasted on me." Bell made his decision quickly, he might never get Chain Attack again but that was fine. "As much as Chain Attack could help me, I think… survivability is more important."

Hestia breathed a sigh of relief, Bell guessed that she was glad about that. "Alright, looks like you got another skill. Survivor increases your chances of surviving a lethal blow, based on luck."

Bell chuckled as Hestia put a sheet of paper on his back, "Well… I'm glad I have the Luck Developmental Ability then. Seems like a perfect match."

"It does, here you go. And congratulations on leveling." Hestia spoke softly, Bell stood and accepted the paper glancing at it.

Bell gave a quick bow, "Thank you, Goddess. Is there anything else?"

Hestia paused then shook her head, "No. Just remember to visit me later alright? If tomorrow would be better then that's alright as well."

Bell gave a small smile, "Alright… Goddess. Also… thank you for not exploding about Ryu and me. That… means a lot."

Hestia waved her hand in front of her face, but Bell could see a bit of sadness in her eyes. "It's fine. Now go let Ryu know, but don't let her do anything reckless alright."

"Of course." Bell bowed lightly, before taking his leave. As Bell stood in the hall, he took a deep breath. His sense felt like there was a constant disorientation. It was a familiar sensation. It's what always happened when he leveled, or when Haruhime had used her magic on him.

He could see the sun was still fairly high in the sky, 'It's what, two or three?' Bell shook his head. "It doesn't matter."

.

.

.

Bell paused outside his room. He was certain that Ryu was still in there, took another breath, and opened the door. Ryu nearly jumped out of her skin when the door creaked open. "Bell!"

Bell didn't say anything, he just entered and closed the door behind him. "Ryu…" on his way, he debated on how best to approach the topic at hand. It… wasn't something he wanted to delay, but now that he was here. He… just couldn't right away. So instead he approached and sat next to Ryu.

Ryu blushed a tiny bit, as he grabbed her hand. "Well… I'm level 5 now, and… something major changed with my falna."

Ryu tilted her head, it seemed she could tell he was hesitating about what was bothering him earlier. "What was it?" She asked with a slight smile.

Bell chuckled, "Well… I'm no longer technically a human. My race is now a divine-touched human, I've never even heard anything about that. Not through all the stories I've been told." Bell placed a hand over his eyes and rubbed them heavily, he was starting to see spots before Ryu pulled him a little closer.

"Well, that's strange. But it doesn't change how I feel at least." She shifted closer and leaned into Bell.

Bell took a sputtering breath. "Right… so about what… was bothering me earlier." He shifted and turned to face Ryu. He could see the pureness of her sky-blue eyes. He couldn't see a hint of the self-loathing he had seen before. That… made this even harder. But he pushed through. "So… I was given a letter by Lady Astraea, it explained a little about things that happened in the last year. Including why, she has decided to write a letter now."

Bell took a deep breath. "Ryu… I'm sorry… Astraea returned to Tenkai." He could see her hope and happiness dropping quickly away, so he wrapped her in a tight hug. "Ryu… her divinity was being drained by a creature. She… didn't have much longer to live. That's why she felt strange. She didn't have a divine aura anymore."

He felt Ryu try to push him away, "No… no that can't be right. She promised to see us again. She… she…" Bell could feel her tears falling onto his shoulder. "What… about Larsa… what about…"

It broke his heart to hear Ryu sobbing so violently. "Larsa was a deception. One Astraea created so you wouldn't be as worried about leaving her. Remember how the elder reacted?" Ryu was struggling weakly to pull away, but it seemed like she had given up escaping his grasp. He wouldn't let her do anything reckless.

"Bell… I… we… she…" Ryu stumbled over words, she instead wrapped her arms around his back and gave into his embrace, and she cried. She didn't hold it back, if Bell was anyone else he was sure she would've just bottled it up until it harmed her.

Hours passed, Bell didn't know what time it was, but the open crying turned to sobbing. Then the sobbing stopped so suddenly it surprised him. She started to pull away, he was cautious but let her do so. She looked him straight in the eyes and launched into a kiss, pushing him flat onto the bed.

Ryu felt numb from the release of her emotions, the fact that Astraea was gone and had been putting up a strong face in front of them. 'No wonder she was so adamant with her teasing. Sending us out to do things, to meet with the elder. It all makes sense, she didn't want us to see her weakness. I… how didn't I…' her emotions started swelling again.

She didn't know how long she had been in Bell's strong warm embrace. She sought something to help the numb feeling that filled her heart and mind. 'Maybe… his warm embrace it's all I can feel… I… need more. To feel something else… I…' She tried to pull away, and to her relief he allowed it. Despite both being level 5, Bell was so much stronger than her.

She looked him straight in the eyes, and her resolve hardened as she observed those beautiful ruby eyes. She put her ideals aside and kissed him quickly pushing him onto the bed. Before Bell could act, she sat on his pelvis pinning his hands under her knees.

She leaned down and started kissing him again and again. She thought she heard something, but she was so focused on her pursuit that she couldn't make sense of the words. She pulled back and hastily started removing her traveling tunic. It slipped off easily, she glanced down and could see a blush spreading across his face. She could also feel his body reacting. 'Warmth…' that thought was the only thing racing through her mind.

She raised her waist a little bit and started pulling at his shirt. It rose a handful of inches before Bell managed to resist. He started to try to move his hands, 'Right… it would be impossible to remove his shirt without tearing it otherwise. But first I…' she reached around her back and started removing the wrapping around her chest.

The first strand of the white cloth fell away, and she could feel Bell reacting even more. This brought a sort of numbed pleasure to her. 'I'm glad he is excited. It'll make this easier.' She felt Bell struggling underneath her, the last strand of cloth fell away, and Bell's blush grew heavier. Bell was saying something but she couldn't hear him.

His hand slipped free and grabbed her, she let out a soft moan as he touched her bare back. She felt herself be pulled closer, dislodging his other hand. Bell wrapped his arms around her, and a hint of excitement grew. His breath fell onto her ear. She let out a soft moan, despite saying what he had, he never did tease her on their travels. They both had simply been too exhausted. So she prepared herself for that shocking feeling.

"Ryu!" Bell's voice broke through her numbed mind.

Ryu looked at the bed, and she stopped completely. "Bell… I…"

Ryu felt the back of her head being gently stroked. "It's alright Ryu… I'm here for you, but… I'm not going to let you make that mistake."

"All… I wanted was… to feel your warmth… I… didn't… I." Ryu mumbled out the words, her mind felt like it was so close to shattering. She'd lost almost everything, 'If… I would've… done that… I would've betrayed him and taken advantage… of his love.'

She started crying again, she struggled to escape in vain. She wanted nothing more than to flee. "Ryu… it's alright. I… promise you this. I will love you no matter what. Even if our souls are burned to nothing. But… I won't take advantage of your weakness. Is that clear?" Bell's voice was low and measured.

His words sent a shiver down her spine, 'Bell… you're… too kind… so many others would've taken advantage of the situation. But you didn't…' She could feel her mind growing heavy from the bursts of emotion. "I… love you… Bell…"

The last thing she saw was Bell giving a soft smile, the last thing she heard was Bell whispering, "I love you, Ryu. Now, go ahead and get some rest. I'll still be here when you wake up."

Hestia stared at the wall, the unfolded letter from Astraea was laid across her desk. There was a soft knocking on her door. She almost didn't even hear it. "Yes… come in."

Eina entered the room with a small smile on her face. "I heard the news. Bell and Ryu have returned."

Hestia looked down at the letter, "It does seem that way."

She could see the confusion on her face. "Why… aren't you more excited?"

Hestia shook her head. "I am happy. It's just… Ryu is in an extremely vulnerable state and with them both leveling and the changes in Bell… Well, I have a lot on my mind. How did it go for you today? Hopefully, Mikoto was there if you needed her."

Hestia could see the confusion on Eina's face. "Changes?"

Hestia sighed, picking up the letter and placing it to the side. "I'm sorry… that's not something I can talk about. It'll be up to Bell if he wants to let everyone know." She could see the disappointment on Eina's face. "But knowing Bell's personality, he'll probably tell everyone eventually."

Eina bowed, "Of course Goddess. But as to your question, not bad while I can't concurrent chant. I was able to dodge an attack from a dungeon lizard while casting. Which… while not much is a great first step."

Hestia couldn't help the small smile that showed on her face. "That's great to hear, just keep practicing and I'm sure you'll get it down in no time. You're smart and have strong instincts, I believe in you."

The change was immediate, while Eina kept a straight face her shorter half-elf ears twitched and her eyes seemed to sparkle at the compliment. "Thank you, Goddess."

Hestia felt some of her good mood return to her excitement at a compliment. "Alright, can you let everyone know that Bell and Ryu might not be joining us for dinner? I'll check on them later."

Eina gave a quick bow, "Yes Goddess. I can do that." She stood in the room for a few more seconds just to make sure there wasn't anything else. "If you'll excuse me."

Hestia watched her turn and leave, the door shut once again and Hestia was alone. She read over the letter again, if felt… short, inadequately short. Hestia felt she had so much more she wanted to say, but couldn't bring herself to write it. 'I wish you could've said everything Astraea. Knowing that these are your last words for another while on Genkai.'

Hestia sighed and folded it back up. Leaning back in her chair, she groaned in exhaustion. 'It's not even five yet and I'm so exhausted already.' She complained silently, but in truth, she was just happy she didn't have to work today. She had wanted to be there when they returned and she was.

She closed her eyes for a few seconds wanting nothing more than to drift off to sleep. But she knew that would be a terrible idea. So instead she sat straight and stretched. "Alright, just a little more work and dinner should be done by then."

With a little bit of trepidation, she grabbed the first page of the stack of papers and glanced over it, before sighing and making a few marks.

Bell watched as Ryu slept, he remembered the way she acted so clearly. The image was burned into his memory, not the image of her stripping, it was the despair in her eyes. How despite everything, she had given in and wanted to feel… well anything.

He pulled the covers over her sleeping form almost an hour ago, he knew he wouldn't be able to dress her without her noticing and waking. No matter how mentally exhausted she was, that was unrealistic. So he went with a middle ground and just covered her up to her neck with his blanket.

In the process, he shifted her into a more comfortable sleeping position. But like he promised he didn't leave her side, keeping a tight grip on her hand the entire time. Hoping that in the terrible dreams, he felt sure she was having, it might provide some comfort.

'I'm glad I realized something was off by the look in her eyes. Otherwise… I don't think I would've been able to resist her.' He let out a small sigh as the thought crossed her mind.

A soft clicking sound alerted Bell, he watched the door quietly open. Hestia's head peaked through the door, and Bell quickly made the universal sign for silence. A single finger hovering over his lips. Hestia nodded and slowly entered the room holding a tray of food. When she got a little closer she blushed lightly seeing Ryu's tunic and wrappings on the floor.

Bell quickly shook his head and whispered, "It's not what you think. She tried but I said no. She just fell asleep from the mental exhaustion."

Hestia seemed to breathe a breath of air in a relieved sigh. "Good. Here is some of the dinner. Haruhime was going to bring it up, but I thought it would be best to check on you both." She whispered and placed the tray on the nightstand next to the bed. "Sorry, it isn't fresher."

Bell let a soft smile show, "I appreciate it regardless. What time is it?" Bell looked out the window, it was dark nearly pitch black outside.

He had an estimate but wanted to know for sure. "Just passed eight."

Bell couldn't help but sigh at the news. "Alright, thank you again, and… can you tell everyone I'm sorry for not attending dinner."

Hestia smiled and gave him a thumbs up, "I already had them told that would likely be the case. So you don't have to worry about it."

Bell returned his gaze to Ryu's sleeping face. "Thank you for that. I… don't think I'll be able to talk today, tomorrow would be best."

Hestia shook her head, her twin tails flying. "It's alright. Just keep doing what you're doing. It's important I'm sure, if she was willing to go so far in her sadness. Here let me… do this at least." Hestia blushed a tiny bit and picked up the tunic before folding it and placing it on the chair. She hesitated but did the same with the chest bindings.

"Thank you, Goddess. I would've but… I didn't want to leave her side even for a moment." Bell blushed a tiny bit, what he said was true but if he did it would cause the burned image to return to his mind.

Hestia looked him over. "Well… try to get some sleep as well alright? Tomorrow will be a long day."

Bell nodded quickly, "I know and I'll try." Hestia smiled and made her way to the door. He wanted to say something else, but nothing came to mind as Hestia exited the room.

He sighed and looked at Ryu, he couldn't help but blush knowing that she was topless under the blanket. Taking a deep breath, he lay next to her on top of the blankets.

He stared up at the ceiling for a long time, over an hour passed, and started thinking he wasn't going to be able to sleep with Ryu in the situation she was in when an arm draped over his chest. Bell gulped, knowing there was a chance that the blanket might have fallen off.

Still, he glanced over and breathed out a sigh of relief. She was still covered, for the most part. He closed his eyes and let out another breath. 'Right… sleep…' His mind was so distracted that he had completely forgotten about the food sitting on the nightstand.

X

Ryu's mind shifted to consciousness slowly, she had a pounding headache. Her eyes fluttered open, to see Bell's face only a few inches away. She couldn't help the small smile that appeared on her face. Then a wave of embarrassment as the memories of what she tried to do last night bubbled to the surface of her mind.

'Oh gods… why…' It was at that point she noticed she was still not wearing her tunic. She took a moment to calm down, by taking a deep breath. 'Nothing happened… remember Bell stopped that.' She glanced at Bell again and noticed he wasn't even under the blankets with her.

"Bell…" She knew she shouldn't be surprised, but still she was. 'He wanted to preserve some form of my modesty… even after what I did.' She knew her ears were crimson-colored and also that there was nothing she could do about it. So, instead of trying she rotated onto her back and stared at the ceiling.

The ceiling was flat and wooden, she traced the grains of the wood for a minute until a thought passed through her mind. 'He… wasn't lying. He really didn't seem to leave my side.' She had guessed by how their hands were still intertwined.

Her heart started beating faster, the trust that she unconsciously had in him wasn't betrayed. He kept his word… that meant so much. But slowly the happiness at his honesty faded as memories of the Astraea Familia started to flood back. 'Could she… really not have told me? I… no. If she had… I would've stayed there, and that wasn't what she wanted. Astraea… wanted me to be happy. Even through the sadness, I can see that now.'

Ryu let a bittersweet smile take the position of the previous happy one. "All I have left… from those times now… are my memories, my skill, and the shattered remains of my weapon." The memories burned, her skill hurt to think about using, and her weapon was worthless until Welf reforged it into something new.

Ryu glanced out the window, the mottled hues of purple and orange helped her guess the time. 'Around 5:30 if I were to guess. Maybe… I can… sleep just a little more. Maybe… just for a moment… I can forget my shame and embarrassment…' Ryu closed her eyes and shifted, hoping to fall asleep. But she couldn't, she had already slept so long that her body rejected more despite how tired she felt.

Half an hour passed and Bell started shifting, "Bell…" Ryu muttered as she opened her eyes, keeping her mind solely focused on the ceiling. He didn't respond, she called out again.

Bell mumbled something that sounded like five more minutes. Ryu couldn't help but chuckle at his reaction, but she gave in and let him sleep some more. She had no idea how late he was up watching over her.

.

.

.

Overall another hour passed before Bell woke enough to communicate. "Bell." She asked just to make sure.

"Yes… Ryu." He half mumbled, but at least he was cognizant.

She turned her head to see his half-closed ruby eyes looking at her. She gulped but continued, "I'm… sorry about last night. I… wasn't thinking straight and would've done something horrible… I…"

Her voice was cut off by Bell's voice. "Ryu…" She quieted and waited for Bell to continue. "I agree that it was reckless. But it's alright, nothing happened and my love hasn't shifted in the slightest. Like I said last night, I… won't let you make a mistake like that. While I'm sure it would've been fine in the long run, it would've tainted our relationship in the short term."

He leaned closer and placed a gentle kiss on her forehead causing her face and ears to burst into crimson. "I wouldn't want that, so whenever you are feeling depressed or down. Please let me know even if it's hard, and we'll work through it together."

Ryu lay there for a long few minutes just staring into the crimson orbs. Eventually, she nodded, "I'll… try and for what it's worth. I'll be here for you if you need someone." This time it was she who leaned forward and kissed Bell, their lips parted after a second. They were both crimson, but she could see a wide smile on his face.

"I love you, Ryu," Bell whispered, just loud enough for her to hear.

"And I you… Bell." She whispered back just as quietly.

For a time they lay there in silence, but that couldn't last forever as a knocking sound could be heard at the door, as Haruhime's voice passed through the closed door. "Breakfast will be ready in fifteen minutes. I… just wanted the both of you to know." They both heard Haruhime's soft steps moving away.

Both of them glanced at each other and groaned at the missed dinner and lunch. "Right… food… Goddess had brought us some last night, but you were already asleep and I… wasn't worried about eating." He glanced to his left. Ryu guessed the food was sitting on the nightstand.

It was silent for a moment, so the pair's stomachs decided to complain in unison, causing them to chuckle.

Ryu went to sit up but was stopped by Bell placing his free arm over her. "Please wait… you… still don't have your tunic on. Wait here a moment and I'll turn my back."

Ryu couldn't help but chuckle, "After how many times you've seen me? But alright, go ahead." She released his hand and saw him stand and move over to the chair in the corner next to the desk. She could see her wrappings and tunic neatly folded.

Bell retrieved them and placed them next to her before scratching the back of his head. "I'll… just wait outside." Without waiting for a response, Bell turned and left. Leaving Ryu alone in his room, 'He… watched me get changed a handful of times in Lute. How is this different?' She silently asked as she sat up letting the blanket fall from her chest.

She looked downward and sighed, before quickly shifting the tunic on. She tucked her chest wrapping into a fold of her clothes. She wanted nothing more than to lie back down even if she knew she wouldn't be able to sleep. But things needed to get done in the day, including officially transferring to Hestia Familia with the Guild, and so much more.

She felt drained just thinking about everything, but still, she got out of the warm comforting bed and moved towards the door. She opened revealing a new day with a new future.

Astraea's eyes slowly opened, she was lying on the floor of her shrine. She had lost track of time between the constant bouts of unconsciousness and being wracked with pain.

The pain wasn't what woke her up this time. She felt it, the final tether to a child dissolved. "Good… it didn't snap, she managed to transfer." She would be lying if she said she wasn't surprised. "I'm… happy that I held out long enough." She felt tears forming, she didn't even have the energy to try to resist.

She sighed and glanced at the plaque of names. They seemed to be calling her, begging her to join them. A small smile cracked her dry lips. "Has it really been two weeks?" She muttered, her throat felt like sand.

Two weeks had passed since she entered the room. She hadn't left it once, her stomach felt like it would collapse, mouth burned with every breath she took. Fortunately, the nature of her eternal body prevented her from passing due to dehydration.

Though her thoughts were mottled, and she swore she could hear her children calling her, lifting her up to return. She held up her left arm and lifted her head, with relative ease which surprised her. Black web-like marks ran over the back of her hand.

She grimaced, and let her hand and head slam back onto the wooden floor. Again she heard the cries as she closed her eyes. She took in one last breath, her mind focused on the beautifully natural smile Ryu had during her visit. "Please… Let her keep… That smile."

Then it happened, her mind went blank. Golden light filled the shrine, and Astraea was no more.

Freya, the Goddess of Beauty, Love, Fertility, and Battle swished her glass of wine around forming a small whirlpool in the pristine glass she held. Her two favorite souls had grown much closer than she would've imagined, "My how fast you are moving."

She had just witnessed a mesmerizing sight, Ryu's calm green soul was pulsing rapidly. Even the small fragments of white in her soul were pulsing rapidly.

Bell's soul on the other hand remained calm and steady, there had been a change in his soul deep down but the change was clouded to her eyes. All she knew with absolute certainty was that something happened that changed his very being.

She wanted to know more… to investigate more… to claim them and love them until their souls returned to Tenkai and even after. She shivered at the thought of being able to freely love them without restraint. But she didn't, if she did that would damage their souls which would make them less appealing. "How long can I hold out?" She silently asked herself. Her companion didn't say anything, just staring out at the city with her own eyes.

Freya turned and glanced at the young woman who stood next to her, "How long do you think it will be until my precious Ottar returns?"

Horn shifted the hair out of her face, showing her silver-gray eyes. "We still haven't heard any reports about him. But from my estimate, I would say a week. But I cannot say with certainty, my lady."

Freya sighed and glanced back out towards the city, a few new sparkling souls caught her attention but not enough to act. Especially with her captain away, for now, she would behave. "That's a shame, but I understand. Why don't you go take a rest, I'm sure tomorrow will be a long day."

Horn bowed her head. "If that is your wish, my lady." Without the slightest hesitation, she turned to make her exit.

"Actually… why don't you sleep in my bed tonight? It's been a little while." Freya muttered, swishing the wine around a little more. Freya didn't need to look to see the tiny blush on her child's face. She is usually so stoic, that it was fun to tease her a bit. That reminded her of Ryu to a degree.

"My… Lady." Horn murmured but obeyed her command. The moment she heard the bed in the distance shift slightly, Freya stood and stripped making her way to the bedroom.

Freya chuckled at the blush on Horn's face. "So stoic, but don't think I didn't feel the jealousy you felt. After all…" She sat on the edge of the bed and looked at her child.

Horn's eyes shot from place to place trying not to stare at the Goddess for too long. "I'm… sorry my Lady."

Freya crawled forward and placed a perfectly sculpted finger on Horn's lips. "It's alright… now get some sleep."

HildeVonKrone: Glad you are enjoying it, I have a few... rough ideas for both Freya and Aiz in this version, but we'll have to see.

leonroyce: I'm sorry, but things have to happen, Ryu has already gone through an amazing arc in canon so I have to have some spice to her continued arc. Also, the hints weren't really meant to be subtle, not in many aspects.

Blazeburn: For the departure scene at the end right before I posted the chapter I actually expanded on it with Ryu asking Astraea to come with them, which I realized was something Ryu would probably at least ask. Larsa was an interesting case this time around, having her around more meant more expenditure of Astraea's life not including having to destroy the food she consumed to keep up the illusion. Fortunately for Ryu, Syr got distracted and she never had to answer the barrage of questions. Haruhime deserves some care, and Ryu willing to pat her back while she is crying is a step... either way I'm glad you enjoyed it.

meth0d: Glad you seemed to think so. It went... well... yeah. Unfortunately, the weekly chapters can't continue as you said. I... probably could've managed to continue weekly chapters but with me splitting my time on Judicial and this... either way I would have to spend all my free time on typing Sylphid's which would lead to an extremely quick burnout.

pix25: Thanks.
