Chapter 8
SG-1 had returned to Star Gate Command with Edna after speaking with Thor. They gathered with General Hammond and Dr. Frasier in the briefing room.
Sam explained the situation. "Apparently, the Asgard had a secret genetics program here on Earth back in the sixties and Eddy is the last survivor. She does have Furling. Thor confirmed it. She's also Thor's daughter. Things is, the High Council demanded the program be shut down and specimens destroyed including Eddy. Thor hid Eddy from the Asgard. He told the council that all the specimens were destroyed. He has asked we keep her a secret and that we protect her. He fears that is the council finds out that she's still alive, they will order her to be destroyed. He also said Eddy has a life span that is double a normal humans' and she has not unlocked her full potential yet. She can more than just heal. The Asgard fear she could be a danger as well."
Hammond looked at Eddy who say disgusted with the situation. "Miss Winchester."
She miffed. "Apparently the Asgard think I'm some dangerous animal."
Sam assured. "None of us think that and if Thor thought you were dangerous, he would have destroyed you long ago instead of hiding you."
She sighed. "I know! You're right. It's just this is every orphan's worst nightmare. I dreamed of finding my father and him taking me home and having a large loving family. Instead, I discovered I was nothing more than an experiment and genetic garbage."
"I don't think you are genetic garbage." Sam told her. "And if it weren't for you, I would not even be here. You have helped a lot of people. Do not sell yourself short." she insisted.
"Thanks Sam." she replied grateful for some support.
Jack confessed. "I wish you were the paramedic the day my son died. Least he would have a chance."
Eddy stated. "I had no idea you lost your son. I'm sorry, sir."
"It was my fault. Just wish you were the one who came that day. He might have survived it." he clarified. "You are not some genetic reject. I just want you to know that."
She began to feel better about her situation. "I appreciate that, Colonel."
Daniel agreed. "Thor would not have gone through the trouble of protecting you if you were nothing to him. He sees himself as your father. That's something."
"I know." she had to agree. "I suppose I was a little harsh on him."
"I'm pretty sure he forgave you." Daniel soothed.
Sam had to agree. "Not many people can get away with calling Thor every curse word in the book but you did. He would have beamed any of us right off his ship if pulled that."
Janet asked. "What did she call him?"
Daniel stated. "Arrogant…um…" he censored himself.
"Butt holes." Jack smirked. "And a few F bombs. It wasn't pretty."
Janet remarked amused "Paramedics can be rather passionate."
Daniel admitted. "I was afraid it was going to cost us future treaties."
"Indeed." Teal'c had to agree. He then gave a smile. "However, I would be pleased to see such language directed at the Goa'uld."
Eddy shrunk in her chair. "Sorry that I lost my cool. I have to let it out or I get a lot of real bad luck and weird stuff starts to happen."
Sam cocked her head wondering if that was connected to the warning Thor gave. "What kind of weird stuff?"
"Things catch fire. Things go flying across the room." she replied. "Some really weird shit."
Daniel summarized. "The swearing might be a control mechanism for other abilities. Kind of like letting of steam to prevent a pot from exploding."
"Maybe anger can trigger other abilities." Sam agreed. She looked to Hammond. "Sir, we do need to study what Eddy can do further."
"Agreed." he gave a nod.
Eddy rebutted. "I don't that much sick time left. I need to get back to work. I still need to make a living and pay my bills. I can't be taking a lot of time off."
Hammond stated. "You will be working here, Miss Winchester."
She wondered. "How much or do I take a pay cut?"
Hammond stated. "We will match your current pay and benefits."
Jack asked. "Pension? She's a firefighter, George. She gets a pension and bennies."
He explained, "We don't have a benefits program for contractors. In order to get a pension and healthcare she would need to join the military."
Jack stated. "Either you need to double her pay as a contractor to cover the bennies and retirement or give a her a commission. I mean, she's Thor's kid." he motioned with his hand. "Not some enlisted…" he waved.
Eddy stated. "I don't know anything about being an Air Force officer."
"It's not that hard." Jack assured. "I do it." he shrugged.
Sam pinched her lips hard to not laugh.
Hammond looked at Edna. "It will very hard for me to justify on paper why a firefighter and paramedic with no PhD would get the same pay grade level as Dr. Jackson. I can get you in as a commission officer and that will over your retirement and healthcare. And you would be making close to what you currently making." He offered, "I can make you a second lieutenant."
Jack interrupted. "First lieutenant." He demanded a higher rank for her.
Sam remarked. "Heck! I would go for Captain."
"Right!" Jack agreed. "Captain Winchester."
Edna sunk deeper into her chair as she felt her life was out of her control.
Hammond gave Jack a stern look. "Why not push for General?"
"Then she would outrank me." he excused.
The vein on the side of the General's head began to visibly pulse as Jack annoyed him. He simply gave an unbelieving stare. He decided to one up Jack and go with Major Carter's suggestion. He looked to Edna. "Colonel O'Neill will give you a crash course on how to be an officer, Captain Winchester. I will assign you to the infirmary. You will be working directly under Dr. Frasier."
Eddy asked. "What about the fire department's explorers program? I got six kids." She didn't want to go back on her word.
Hammond shook his head. "I don't see how you can run an explorer's program in the light of what has happened. As of right now, you are a Captain in the Air Force under my command."
She asked. "Don't I get a choice?"
"I'm afraid not." he disagreed. "You are far to valuable. Thor asked us to keep you safe. I need you where I can watch you and Dr. Frasier can run some test as well. You will be assigned base housing. I want to assure you that you are not a prisoner. You can come and go from base like any other officer."
Sam sweetened the deal. "Sir! Eddy is taking a private pilot's course. Maybe she should have access to any training she wishes as well."
"Of course." he nodded.
Daniel chimed in. "And maybe get a new car."
Hammond asked. "What is wrong with her current car?"
He mentioned. "Nothing! She just had to open the door from the inside by rolling down the window and reaching for the door handle. And it's kind of rusted…falling apart."
Jack volunteered. "I'll take her car shopping."
Sam countered. "I can take her car shopping."
"Carter?" he asked.
She reasoned. "I know more about cars that you do and she doesn't need to buy something that is large and obnoxious, sir."
"I can help her pick out something small." he rebutted.
Eddy held up her hands. "Stop! Please just stop. This is all too much. Can't I at least think about this?"
The table fell silent.
Janet concluded. "Maybe we should give her some time to think about it. Plus, I think she should give the fire department a two weeks notice anyways."
Daniel soothed. "How about it, Eddy? Give a two week notice, wrap up what you were doing with the department first?"
She slowly nodded. "I can do that."
He assured her. "I'm here if you need me."
She gave him a soft smile. "I appreciate that."
Fire Station
Eddy returned to the fire station the next morning. She had written up her two weeks notice and held the paper in her hand as she walked into the Chief's office. "Chief!" she greeted.
Chief Morris looked up from his morning newspaper. "I'm glad your back. I was afraid they were going to keep you."
"They are." she told him. She handed him her notice. "I got two weeks."
He took the notice. "Ed." he sighed.
"They offered me a commission." she told him. "Captain! Plus, free flight lessons and any other schooling. I'm getting a base provided house and the Colonel is going to take me to get a new car."
"They must really want you." he summarized.
She closed the door and then took a seat across from him. She stated, "They took me to meet my father, Thor. He's real but nothing like the visions I would have. Turns out I'm a defunct experiment. The Asgard are a dying race. They came here to Earth back in the sixties and were doing these genetic experiments trying to find a cure to the issue they got. I'm the only specimen that survived. The rest were very weak. Things is, the rest of the Asgard think I'm dead. Thor hid me when this high council ordered the experiment be stopped and the specimens destroyed. The healing thing is nothing more than a side effect. I'm nothing more than some alien genetic experiment."
The chief sat and listened. He pondered about what she said. "No! You are a paramedic and you save lives and you are far more than some alien experiment."
She sighed. "I feel like I hit rock bottom." Tears started to run down her cheek. "I guess I'm having that over due identity crises now."
He confessed. "I would like to get my hands on one of these aliens and beat the crap out of them."
"You might get your chance." she laughed. "The General is going to invite you and Harold in for disclosure and to set up a response plan if we get invaded. Just don't tell him that I told you about what is going on in there. Act surprised!" she suggested.
"Good! I want to see this operation for myself." he agreed.
"You will." she nodded.
