Chapter 12

Sam and Daniel each had a crash course on how to operate an ambulance. It was more than just driving but also how to operate the radios, the lights, sirens and maintain the battery bank as well as equipment. They were also given a crash course on how to apply a neck brace collar and straps to a backboard. They got practice using the equipment on one another which was rather entertaining.

Both Daniel and Sam had donned the fire department uniforms and were in the training room. Eddy was going over with Sam on how to apply the equipment used for accidents to immobilize a patient. Daniel got to play the patient. He was flat on his back and on the orange backboard. Sam successfully applied the neck collar, head blocks and then the straps to keep him strapped to the board. The last task that Eddy showed was to take a cravat and tie Daniel wrist together.

"Just like this." Eddy commented upon completing the task. She was kneeling on one side of the board and Sam on the other.

Daniel lay unable to move.

Sam looked over Daniel over. "Can you move, Daniel?"

He stated. "Just my toes."

"Great!" she then stood up. "Let's go for some coffee, Eddy." She wanted Daniel to think she would leave him behind.

Daniel called. "Wait! You are not going to me leave me like this."

Eddy stood up. "Sure we will. See ya." She then led Sam out the door as a joke.

Daniel called. "What? Wait! I can't move."

Sam and Eddy walked back into the room.

"Where kidding." Sam assured him. She and Eddy then began to remove the devices.

"You two had me for a moment there." he stated.

"We won't leave you strapped to a backboard." Eddy assured. "Just a little firehouse humor."

"Jack would." he countered.

Sam paused in thought. "He would." she had to agree.

Eddy slowly nodded. "I can see him doing that."

In short time, Daniel was freed and the training equipment was placed back in the closet.

As they worked Sam found an item that seemed to have been overlooked. "What's this?" she asked examining the large bag.

"MAST Trousers." Eddy laughed. "Throwback to the seventies. We don't use those anymore."

"What is it?" she wondered.

"Kind of like a big blood pressure cuff for the waist down. It's for shock." she explained. She then grinned. "We can put it on Daniel."

He cocked an eyebrow. "Why?"

"You are make a fun patient." she told him. "Very cooperative."

He paused in thought. What did she mean by that?

The tones sounded over the pagers as the fire whistle blared. The call came over the radio for a car that hit a school bus with students involved.

Eddy looked at her crew. "Sam you are my medic. Daniel, you are driving." She then led the pair out the closet and to the ambulance. She climbed in the passenger's front seat, Sam got in the back and Daniel slid down behind the wheel. He started the rig and keyed the microphone of the radio. "AM 10 acknowledges the call and is en route."

The dispatched confirmed the transmission.

Daniel placed the rig in gear and pulled out the garage. Eddy worked the lights and sirens as he drove to the scene.

Scene

Jon O'Neill found his school bus was in an accident. A car ran right through a red light and into the side of the bus. He looked out the window at the impact. "You have got to be kidding me. How do you not see a school bus?"

The petit female bus driver stood up and stated. "Stay on the bus." She opened the door and walked off.

Jon followed. Before existing he told the kids. "Stay on the bus." he walked off as well. He looked under the bus for damage. He spied the nose of the car wedge underneath. He walked around and discovered an older male driver slumped over the steering wheel.

The driver looked at Jon. "I told you to stay on the bus."

Jon rebutted. "I know more first aid than you do." He went to the driver of the vehicle. He attempted to get a reply but he did no respond. He opened the passenger's back door of the car and climbed inside behind the driver. Very carefully he placed his hands on the neck and head of the driver to stabilize him. All he could do was wait for the firemen to arrive.

In short time the fire trucks and ambulance arrived on scene. Daniel looked over the area. "What a mess." he mentioned.

Edna gave orders. "I will need a backboard, spider straps, collar and a K.E.D., Daniel. Sam, get the jump box." Oh, for Eddy it was heaven. She had extra hands to help. Her job just got much easier. She climbed out of the rig and made her way to the car which was far more damaged than the school bus.

As the firemen secured the scene and ensure the students on the bus were safe, Eddy with Sam and Daniel tended to the driver of the car. Upon arriving at the door Eddy found Jack's teenage clone was holding traction on the driver. She greeted. "Hey Jon. Keep holding traction."

"I got it." he assured her.

He then did a double take upon seeing Sam and Daniel in firefighter uniforms. "What hell? Did you two quit or something?"

Sam spied Jon and replied. "We're filling in for two weeks. How did you know what to do?"

"I know how to extradite someone." he told her.

Eddy assessed the driver. He began to come around. "What?" he groaned.

"Stay still. You were in a car accident." she told the man.

"I'm dia…bet…ic." he stated weakly.

Eddy spoke to Sam. "Give me the blood glucose kit. You and Daniel help fire package him."

Sam handed her the blood test. Eddy went to work getting his blood sugar levels as the men and women worked around her. She found his sugar was dangerously low. She dug a tube of glucose out of the kit and managed to get some of it in the man's mouth as Jon held his head.

In short time the rescuers had the man placed on the backboard and onto the gurney and then into the back of the rig.

Jon had climbed out of the car and watched as Sam and Daniel took over care of the man. He thought of jumping in the back of the ambulance with them for that one moment is was almost like old times for the clone. Working with Sam and Daniel was something the clone missed dearly. All that was missing was Teal'c and in a strange way SG-1 would be back together again. He couldn't resist. He climbed into the back of the rig anyways.

The bus driver yelled at him. "Get out of there, Jon."

He yelled back. "I'm working here."

Sam covered for him. "It's okay. He's my nephew. We can drop him home after the call."

The bus driver threw up her hands rather annoyed. "I'm not getting fired for this."

Eddy then closed the doors of the ambulance. "Get us to general. Red, Daniel." she told him.

He got on the radio and relayed the information to the dispatcher. He placed the ambulance in gear and with lights and sirens he drove away from the scene.

Later

After leaving the Emergency Department, Daniel drove the ambulance back to the station. No students were injured and they were transferred to another bus and brought home. Jon was debriefed on Eddy and what Thor had told them.

Jon sat shocked at the news. He stated, "Thor has a kid!"

Sam reminded him. "Need to know only, Jon." She looked towards the front of the ambulance as she felt them slow down. She noticed the sign of the local diner. "Where we going?"

Daniel shouted back. "Getting something to eat." He looked over to Eddy. "We never got to stop by a diner on our way back from a mission off world."

"We do all the time." she told him. "I tried that M.R.E. you guys gave me. That thing was awful."

"Yes they are." Daniel had to agree. "Try the mac and cheese."

"Is that better than beef patty?" she wondered.

"No," he shook his head. He said nothing more.

She sat wondering why he suggested it.

Jon cheered. "Hey! Food! I'm starving."

Daniel parked the rig. He climbed out with his friends to get something to eat. He couldn't help but grin. "We work good as a team. And this is a nice bonus."

Sam agreed. "It is. I wonder how the Colonel is doing with Harold and the Chief?"

Daniel shrugged. "I wonder how Teal'c is doing."
