"This is the dress!" Rose exclaimed.
Lily Luna, Lucy, Roxanne, Molly, and Victoire all looked at her in horror. Roxanne possibly even spat out her drink, spraying Lily Luna who looked even more horrified. Albus didn't say anything, letting their cousins scream.
"But Rose!"
"You can't possibly wear that!"
"-not a wedding dress!"
"What are you thinking!"
The five of them all started screeching at the same time. The usually quiet little bridal shop was filled with a cacophony of protests from Rose's entourage, remarks ranging from mild surprise to sheer outrage.
Rose was currently shopping for her wedding dress, and Lily Luna and Lucy had insisted they just had to come. Somehow, Victoire had gotten included because she was 'studying fashion, chérie, you just can't do without my opinion'. Lucy had convinced Molly it would be good fun and – this was the most absurd – they had managed to bring Roxanne along.
She would've preferred just Albus – her best friend – to come and pick out her dress, but peer pressure, chocolate bribes, and the promise not to say anything too embarrassing at her wedding had made her bring both Albus and her five female cousins along.
"Don't you love it?" she asked, twirling around.
"But Rose," Lucy started, "It's beige."
"I believe the attendant said it was 'sands of the desert.' Right?" Rose turned to the poor consultant who looked positively terrified by the gaggle of Weasley cousins in his little shop. She didn't blame him, not many people were used to the amount of red hair and noise her cousins implicated.
He nodded, timidly.
"IT'S BEIGE!" shrieked Lily Luna, delicate as always. "And beige simply isn't a wedding colour!"
Indeed, her dress was not the traditional white, but Rose thought it was lovely, beautiful even. It had the loveliest heart neckline, lace covering the bodice, and a long flared-out skirt. And it didn't make her look like a meringue. She had known immediately as she had put the dress on that it was the one for her.
"Rose, chérie," Victoire intervened. "Beige is not your colour."
Molly nodded eagerly next to her.
Her French cousin continued: "You have lovely dark skin. White is simply ravishing on you."
"Beige, on the contrary," Roxanne quipped up. "Makes you look like a pile of dirty sheets."
Lucy kicked her.
"Ow! Why did you kick me?" Roxanne exclaimed.
"You're not supposed to be that mean, even if you don't like it!" Lucy reprimanded.
"But she does look like a pile-"
Roxanne received another kick. This effectively shut her up.
"Anyway," Lily Luna said, as if nothing at all had happened. "Do you want to try any other dresses?"
The other girls nodded eagerly.
Rose sighed. "I suppose so."
They cheered. The consultant tried to hide a little more behind the mannequin.
"I suppose you've already got some ideas for me?" Rose asked.
Every girl got up and headed towards some dress they preferred, trying to convince Rose that their option was much better than the beige atrocity she was planning on wearing. As a fight broke out over whether fishtail was better than princess, Albus suddenly appeared at her side.
"You know," he started, "I'm pretty sure Scorpius doesn't care what you're going to wear."
Rose smiled at her cousin and her best friend. "I know but the girls really want me to pick white."
Albus shook his head. "Who cares what they think? They can wear white if and when they get married. This is your wedding, you do what you want."
Rose impulsively hugged him to stop the tears that were threatening to spill for some reason. She guessed dress shopping just made one especially emotional. "Thank you, Albus."
"And," he murmured, "You look fabulous in beige."
"Tell that to our cousins." She laughed a little.
Albus let go of her and looked her straight in the eyes. "You know, Rose… If you like that dress so much-"
"It's the one," she interrupted. "I'm sure."
He smiled, and she suddenly remembered just exactly how much of a Slytherin her cousin truly was. That smile told her he was up to something. She was sure she'd find out later.
A few minutes later, Rose was now sporting a very white, very lacy and very revealing wedding dress that her cousins had picked out for her. They were all bickering about whether or not having that low of a neckline was appropriate enough for a wedding - so far Lily Luna, Lucy, and Victoire were for, and Roxanne and Molly against it. Thankfully, they didn't notice Albus discreetly paying for Rose's beige dress and slipping out of the shop, unnoticed.
Rose smiled to herself. She was glad she had her dress, but she was even happier that Albus was her best friend, always ready to help.
