"You've been wrong so many times that I'm not even going to say something is wrong anymore. I'm going to say that it's 'Rose'," Albus declared with a sigh.
It had not been a good idea to agree to be Rose's lab partner. Somehow, he'd thankfully managed to avoid it for his first two years at Hogwarts, as Slytherins and Gryffindors hadn't been paired together for Potions. However, now in his third year, it had finally happened, and when Rose had smiled kindly at him and begged him to be his lab partner, he could only agree.
He'd quickly learned it was a mistake.
His darling cousin was a swot, a huge one. She had perfect grades absolutely everywhere, and she was part of chess club, and she played Quidditch, and you could bet she was aiming to be a prefect and then Head Girl.
She only had one weak point: Potions. And for a weak point, boy was it weak. Albus couldn't even comprehend how she could be possibly so bad at Potions.
"Oh, Albus, I'm sorry," she told him, looking truly desolate.
Thankfully, today was only a written exercise day. They simply had to analyse the different ingredients of the Wide-Eye, and determine what particular ingredients or combinations of ingredients contributed to which aspect of staying awake.
It wasn't particularly difficult, but Rose comprehended none of the logic behind it.
At least it wasn't a practical. They'd had some…bad experiences over the course of the last couple of weeks.
"Don't worry, it's just that it's quite simple. Look, if you take these two ingredients and put them together, it guarantees the awakening of the brain."
She nodded diligently and wrote it down. "Does that mean that this ingredient is used to keep the body awake?"
She pointed at one of the ingredients on the list, and Albus sighed again.
"Rose, that's wrong again. This one is used to relieve stress on the mind from the forced awakening."
Rose frowned. "I'm just so bad at this!"
Another voice suddenly butted into their conversation. "No, you aren't, Rose! You just need someone to help you!"
This time Albus rolled his eyes. He turned to the table behind them and glared at his best friend, Scorpius, who very purposely avoided his glare and continued to look at Rose.
"You really think so, Scorpius?" Rose asked.
"Rose, let's focus back on our exercise," Albus said, but she blissfully ignored him.
"Yeah, Albus is really bad at explaining things," Scorpius continued.
"HEY!"
"If you want, I can be your lab partner next time?" he offered and Rose smiled.
"I'd like that," she told him, and both of them smiled stupidly at each other.
Albus couldn't believe what had just happened. Rose had just abandoned him like that, for Scorpius! Okay, it was true that both Albus and Scorpius had excellent grades in Potions but that wasn't a reason to abandon your favourite cousin! Especially because he knew that Scorpius had a crush on his cousin—very poor taste if you asked him—but he didn't think Rose would fall for him too.
"Rose! How could you leave me like that!" he exclaimed.
"Oh, Albus, it is true that you don't explain very well," she said sweetly, and continued the exercise, getting all of her answers wrong.
Albus didn't say anything to correct her, because it was true that he was a little petty, and maybe held a little grudge. Merlin, his cousin and his best friend had better not start getting along too well, or Albus was just going to quit!
