01 The Stress of "Life Admin"
A 2023 report from the Pew Research Center found that in approximately one-third of U.S. heterosexual marriages today, men and women earn about the same amount. Dissatisfaction is often seen as the underlying theme in most cases of infidelity. "People justify this by saying, 'We are in a bad patch.'" Skurtu says. For every relationship boundary crossed, the person has to justify her behavior to herself before compartmentalizing her actions. Not finding satisfaction in a current relationship can trigger someone to seek that feeling elsewhere or even use the act of cheating (whether consciously or unconsciously) as a catalyst to end her current relationship.
03 Low Self-Esteem
When a woman is struggling with low self-worth, it may spur her to look to external sources for the attention and validation that she and her partner are unable to create and sustain. "Low self-esteem starts out looking like, 'Why would anyone find me attractive?,'" Skurtu says. "Then when someone starts to show her that attention, it feels really good." A woman who cheats may rely on affairs to provide her with proof of her value or desirability. And when one fling ends, it may cause her to feel neglected or worthless, so she pursues a new romantic interest—and the cycle continues.
04 Emotional Starvation
While studies suggest that men who cheat are primarily motivated by sex, women who cheat tend to do so to fill an emotional need.2 (And in the case of an emotional affair, sex isn't part of the equation at all.) Whether the affair is physical or emotional in nature, a woman may cheat because she craves conversation, empathy, respect, devotion, adoration, support, or some other connection that's lacking in her current relationship. "Some people convince themselves emotional is not a real affair," Skurtu says. "However, most sexual ones start emotional. I find it pretty rare to have an only sexual affair without some emotions because they usually start as friends. That's how you start crossingboundaries and justify the behavior."

When the partner falls short of expectations and can't meet their every need and desire, it can create a divide in the relationship. You've likely heard of the term serial cheaters—people who commit infidelity for the thrill of it. "I think as a society we don't honestly address how boring work and family life can be at times," Skurtu says. "I was recently watching the show Good Girls, and they turn to street crimes. Try as we might to keep the spark alive, the excitement that accompanies a new relationship can only last so long. Predictability and familiarity will eventually overtake the quality and frequency of sex. It's not surprising, then, that some women who cheat are missing those thrilling hallmarks of a relationship's beginning stages, when passion and intrigue have yet to give way to routine. In fact, Skurtu believes this is historically one of the motivators behind male-centric infidelity: "It might have been an expectation that at a certain point, sex was not a big part of marriage, so cheating was a necessary evil."
08 Loneliness
"Many women begin to fantasize about other romantic or sexual connections, particularly out of severe loneliness or emotional disconnection from their partner," Kim says. This type of feeling can stem from a number of different situations, including a partner who travels constantly, a spouse who works long hours, or even a husband with a chronic illness. Whatever the reason, loneliness or feelings of isolation and disengagement can often push someone to seek out that romantic fulfillment elsewhere. 09 Insecure Attachment Style
Attachment theory suggests that early childhood relationships influence how we perceive and behave in our intimate relationships as adults. Depending on the care and nurturing (or lack thereof) that a woman receives as a child, she'll fall into one of four attachment styles as an adult: secure (having well-adjusted expectations and approaches to relationships), anxious (exhibiting fear of abandonment), avoidant (preferring to retain her independence from others), or disorganized (pushing people away). "People think, 'I only have so much time left. What am I doing with my life?,'" Skurtu says. A woman may act out of character as she attempts to realize her potential—and even make up for lost time.
11 Opportunity
Few cases of infidelity are premeditated, Skurtu says. Instead, they often come as a result of an unexpected opportunity. "They feel down and another person in a similar boat crosses their path," she says. "They start commiserating and then it moves on from there." People in this situation usually can't explain the reason behind their infidelity. "It sort of just happens, even though, really, there are specific moments of truth that can make or break the potential affair." Similar opportunities exist in the digital realm, too. Social media, dating apps, and texting have revolutionized the ease at which we can connect with others, sometimes serving as a springboard for affairs—even if the interactions start innocently.
12 Numbing Difficult Feelings
People develop a wide variety of coping mechanisms to deal with difficult emotions. Sometimes, they may (unintentionally or intentionally) select a strategy that has an emotionally-numbing effect on the situation, seeing it as a better alternative than facing their problem head-on. Kim Seon Hwa: I read your husbands post and I also read your post defending your husband from the harsh criticisms he received …. It's apparent that you and your husband love each other very much…. So how did you let yourself do this ? Do you see yourself in any of the categories that the experts listed. What is frustrating for most people is " If you love your spouse so much why would you cheat on them?
Soo Yeon: It's a fair enough question to ask…. Looking at your list from the experts that you have posted …. I can say it was never about sex…..however… I did allowed myself to fall into the # 1 category Life Admin. I tried to be all things to everyone when it came to my child's upbringing and educational needs, while trying to maintain a demanding career that took up a great deal of time. The more I tried to do in that category the more I began to regress. For every step forward I took I found myself as taking two steps back. Not willing to admit defeat I continued until I saw myself as a failure to my child….. probably a disappointment to my husband since he couldn't see nor understand my shortcomings. Looking back I should've talked to my husband and let him understand my frustrations and the loneliness in dealing with it.
The more I saw myself failing as a mother….. Item # 3 could also be a factor….. My Self Esteem went to an all-time low even though I didn't let on that I was drowning in it. I found myself not liking who I was. I've been criticized in my post for saying that That Person I met had given me a present … a two hour window that allowed me to finish a book that I desperately wanted to read but couldn't. He was savvy enough to see that Item number 4 Emotional Starvation made me an easy target for him. He pushed the right buttons and built up my ego and made me feel like a woman that was alive again. My attitude changed in that I wanted to be more pleasing to him…..I dressed more alluring instead of the plain haggered woman running around trying to catch myself. I put on makeup that enhanced my features and then I started fantasying so I would wear sexy underwear when I was to meet with him for business meetings. Everything I should've done for my husband ….. I was doing for this man …. Was it right for me to sleep with him because of it….. that's a regret that I will live with the rest of my life.
Kim Seon Hwa: You mentioned that you regretted this ….. are there other moments that you regret.
Soo Yeon: Seeing my husband's eyes in that elevator the moment he caught me doing what he never imagined I would do. When he mentioned the word " Divorce " I thought my world would end….. but I did it … I caused it all and for what? The shame and humiliation that I now felt was greater than anything I had ever felt.
Kim Seon Hwa: In your husband's post he mentioned that after that initial confrontation he walked out of that hotel room and was waiting for you to follow him and beg him for his forgiveness... you… why didn't you follow him?
Soo Yeon: How could I?….. I was the woman my husband trusted the most and I trampled it for no apparent reason other than I needed some attention… I needed to be flirted with….. the shame and guilt that I had at that moment wouldn't let me face the man I loved the most yet I allowed myself to cheat on him. What kind of woman had I become.
Kim Seon Hwa: I along with the rest of the viewers are wondering…. That man said that he loved you and he believed that you loved him….Did you love him since you did sleep with him.
Soo Yeon: No… I've only loved one man and I will continue to love him till the day I die. The fact that I allowed him to have sex with me had nothing to do with me loving him. This may sound superficial but that act was a form of saying thank you for lifting my spirits and making me like myself again. It's ironic …My husband now tells me that my weaknesses blinded me to that man's true intentions… he was a predator and I became his prey. This whole experience almost cost me everything….. and I was on the verge of loosing my husband that I loved dearly …. My child was turning into a loner that couldn't handle that my husband and I were on the final stage of divorce.
Kim Seon Hwa: I was told that your husband couldn't stand all the secrecy so he forced that man to tell his wife that he was having an affair with you. Is that right?…. Did she ever confront you …. Since you were now the other woman?
Soo Yeon: The other woman… something I never thought I would have become… After everything was revealed and I confessed to my husband … which I regret the way I did it…that man's wife asked to see me and made me realize that I was mere pawn in a game that he was playing with me. She said that what he was doing with me was only done to bring some excitement back to their relationship and that he was never going to be my savior. When he said to her that I wasn't worth his time …. How stupid I had become…. That man showed himself...now that he was finished with me …had me removed from the the lead from my job assignment… further adding to my decline . My career was at a stand still and my marriage was coming to and end …. I had to do a lot of soul searching on myself. I did what I did... now it was time I paid the price for my actions. The consequences were steep.
Kim Seon Hwa: Did you and your husband end up divorcing?
Soo Yeon: The pain and anguished I caused was to great to overcome. My husband's love even allowed himself to try to forgive me and he even asked to start over again…. when he tried to hug me ...The image of me with another man was to much for him to handle. I asked for the divorce and took off my wedding ring by admitting that I failed our marriage but at least we could learn to be friendly towards each other in raising our son who suffered the most by my actions. Even though my husband conceeded that he could no longer be my legal husband he had learned to be a better husband than before. At our divorce signing documents he gave me everything to make living my life with our son more comfortable….. making everyone wonder why we were getting a divorce.
Kim Seon Hwa: Once you both of began living separate lives what changed between the both of you.
Soo Yeon: We became friends even though both of our hearts couldn't let go of each other….. the biggest stab to my heart was the night I saw him with another woman … eating dinner with her…. That should've been me…. I threw him away for no good reason….. I was loosing him forever.
Kim Seon Hwa: How did it change and the two of you found your way back together?
Soo Yeon: Even though I let my weaknesses cross that boundary and I foolishly was willing to throw away my marriage, my family for a silly notion... my pride because I wanted two hours to read a book was as irresponsible as can be. My husband as angry and hurt as he was at me couldn't force himself to throw me away and make me live with the consequences of my actions… that moment that I saw him with that woman his eyes caught mine we both knew that this was our last goodbye … but it wasn't …he came running back to me and our son and we put our past behind us. Right before our divorce was to be finalized we stopped it and returned to our normal life ... there no longer a third person when we embraced or made love... it was just the two of us. I'm the lucky one in that I married a man that knows how to love his wife….. and now I'm becoming the wife that knows how to love her husband.
Kim Seon Hwa: Our sources have told us that you and your husband are expecting a baby …Is that true?
Soo Yeon: Yes… Fate didn't give up on us… the fact that our love created another child has become a blessing to our family.

Soo Yeon: If your husband isn't your problem but outside influences that you may or may not be able to control. Don't make the mistake I made and keep quiet and not talk to your husband. If you come across a sweet talker that tells you he has fallen in love with you….run as fast as you can…. He is not worth what you're about to give up.
