The next morning, Edward woke up to the familiar sounds of his parents bustling about the house. The scent of breakfast wafted up to his room, bringing with it a sense of comfort and routine. He stretched, feeling a mix of contentment and longing. The night before had been heartwarming, but his thoughts had often drifted back to Bella.
After getting dressed, Edward made his way downstairs, where his parents were already seated at the kitchen table. His mother was pouring coffee, and his father was reading the newspaper. They greeted him with warm smiles as he took a seat.
"Morning, son," his father said, folding the paper and setting it aside. "Did you sleep well?"
"Morning," Edward replied with a nod. "Yeah, I did. It's nice to be back home with you both"
His mother placed a plate of pancakes in front of him and smiled. "We're glad you're here, even if it's just for a short while. You look more relaxed already."
Edward smiled back, appreciating the familiarity of his parents' company. But even as they ate breakfast and talked about the days ahead, his thoughts kept returning to Bella. He wondered what she was doing, at this moment.
After breakfast, Edward excused himself and headed outside for a walk around the neighbourhood, he enjoyed roaming round as a child. The fresh morning air cleared his mind, but it also made him more aware of the distance between him and Bella. As much as he loved being with his parents, a part of him wished he could still be with her, sharing a quiet morning like they had done just a day ago.
He found a bench in a nearby park and sat down, pulling out his phone. He sent Bella a quick text:
"Morning, Bella. Just wanted to let you know I'm thinking of you. How's your day going?"
It wasn't long before his phone buzzed with her reply:
"Morning, Edward! I was just thinking about you too. I'm good, just getting ready to head out for the day. I've got some errands to do. Can't wait to talk later! xx"
Edward smiled, feeling a wave of warmth at her words. He typed back:
"I can't wait either. I'll call you in the afternoon, after lunch. Enjoy your morning! x"
Bella's response came quickly:
"Sounds perfect. Talk to you soon! :) xx"
Feeling lighter, Edward continued his walk, his thoughts focused on their upcoming call. He knew it wasn't the same as being together in person, but he was determined to make the most of the time they had. When he returned home, he spent the rest of the morning catching up with his parents, helping out with small tasks around the house, and sharing more about his life and his plans for the future.
As lunchtime approached, Edward felt a mix of excitement and nerves. He wanted their video call to go well, to reassure Bella that despite the miles between them, he was fully committed to their relationship.
Finally, the time came. He excused himself from the kitchen, where his parents were finishing lunch, and retreated to his room. He sat on the edge of the bed, took a deep breath, and dialled Bella's number. After a few rings, her face appeared on the screen, and his heart leapt at the sight of her smile.
"Hi, Edward!" Bella's voice was bright and cheerful, but there was a softness in her eyes that matched the emotions he felt.
"Hi, Bella," he replied, his voice warm.
They spent the next hour talking, sharing stories about their day, and making each other laugh. The conversation flowed easily, just like it had in person, and Edward felt a sense of relief knowing that their connection remained strong despite the distance.
As the call began to wind down, Bella's expression grew a little more serious. "I miss you," she said softly, her voice tinged with emotion. "It's only been a day, but it feels like so much longer."
Edward's heart ached at her words, but he smiled reassuringly. "I miss you too, Bella. But we'll get through this. And when I'm back, we'll pick up right where we left off."
Bella nodded, her smile returning. "I know. It's just hard, but I'm glad we're able to talk like this. It makes it a little easier."
They shared a few more moments of quiet conversation, both of them savouring the connection they had. Before they ended the call, Edward made a promise.
"I'll call you every day, even if it's just for a few minutes," he said. "I want to stay close, even when we're far apart."
Bella's eyes softened with affection. "I'd love that. It'll make the time until we see each other again feel shorter."
They said their goodbyes, lingering just a little longer before finally ending the call. Edward sat back on the bed, his heart full despite the ache of missing her. He knew that their time apart wouldn't be easy, but the promise of seeing Bella again—and the connection they had nurtured—gave him the strength to face the days ahead.
As he rejoined his parents in the living room, they noticed the change in his demeanour—the lighter step, the softer smile. They exchanged a knowing glance but didn't press him with questions. They could see that, despite the challenges, their son was happy, and that was enough for them.
The rest of the day passed peacefully, filled with family time and quiet moments of reflection. Edward cherished the time with his parents, knowing how important it was to be present with them, even as he looked forward to the day when he and Bella could be together again.
The promise of Christmas, now just months away, gave him hope and something to hold on to as he prepared to return to duty. And in the meantime, he knew that the love and connection they had built would keep them close, no matter the distance.
The days passed quickly, each one marked by the nightly video calls between Edward and Bella, when they settled in bed for the night. These calls had become a comforting ritual, a way for them to stay connected despite the miles between them. They would talk about their day and simply enjoy each other's company, even if it was just through a screen.
As Edward's leave drew to a close, the reality of his return to duty began to sink in. He cherished every remaining moment with his parents, but his thoughts often drifted to Bella and how much he would miss their nightly conversations.
On the morning of his departure, Edward's parents helped him pack up the last of his things. The car was quiet as they drove him to the airport, the weight of the impending goodbye heavy in the air. Edward tried to keep the mood light, but there was an unspoken sadness that lingered.
When they arrived at the airport, Edward's father parked the car, and they all got out, taking their time as they walked towards the terminal. His mother, who had been quiet for most of the ride, finally spoke up as they approached the entrance.
"We're so proud of you, Edward," she said, her voice filled with emotion. "And we're glad you found someone like Bella. We know it's not easy having a long distance relationship, but you're handling it so well."
Edward smiled, grateful for his parents' support. "Thanks, Mom. I'm really lucky to have her, and to have you both. I'll miss you."
His father clapped him on the shoulder. "We'll miss you too, son. Just keep in touch as much as you can, and take care of yourself out there."
They reached the terminal doors, and Edward turned to face them, his bag slung over his shoulder. His mother pulled him into a tight hug, holding on a little longer than usual. "Stay safe," she whispered.
"I will, Mom," Edward replied, his voice steady but tinged with emotion. He then hugged his father, who gave him a firm pat on the back.
As they stood there, not quite ready to say goodbye, Edward's phone buzzed in his pocket. He pulled it out to see a message from Bella:
"Thinking of you. I know today is hard, but I'm so proud of you. Contact when you can. I'll be waiting 3 xx"
Edward smiled at the message, feeling a swell of love and longing. He showed the text to his parents, who both smiled warmly.
"She's a good one," his father said approvingly. "You hang on to her."
Edward nodded, slipping the phone back into his pocket. "I plan to."
After a final round of hugs and goodbyes, and kissing his tearful mother, Edward turned to enter the terminal. He waved back at his parents one last time before disappearing through the doors.
The airport was bustling, but Edward moved through the motions with a sense of calm. He had done this before, but this time felt different. There was someone waiting for him, someone who made leaving that much harder, but also gave him something to look forward to.
As he sat at the gate, waiting to board his flight, Edward pulled out his phone and opened the messaging app. He sent a quick text to Bella:
"Just said goodbye to my parents. I'm at the gate now. x"
Bella's reply came almost instantly:
"I'm glad you're at the airport ok, I'm counting the days until we can be together again. Be safe, Edward. I'll be here, waiting for you. xx"
Edward took a deep breath, feeling both the weight of his duty and the lightness that came from knowing Bella was there for him. The announcement for boarding crackled over the speakers, and Edward stood, ready to face the next chapter of his journey.
As he boarded the plane, he looked out at the horizon, feeling a mix of emotions—sadness, hope, and determination. He knew the months ahead would be challenging, but he also knew that each day brought him closer to the moment when he could return to Bella's arms.
With a final glance at his phone, Edward sent one last message before turning it off for the flight:
"Boarding the plane. I'll talk to you soon, Bella. Take care of yourself. I'll miss our nightly calls x"
And with that, he settled into his seat, and soon the plane's engines roared to life as they prepared for takeoff. As the plane ascended into the sky, Edward closed his eyes, thinking of Bella and the promise of their future together. The distance between them felt vast, but the love they shared made it all worthwhile.
Back at work, Edward quickly adjusted to the familiar routine of life on duty. The long hours and intense focus required to perform his tasks kept his mind occupied, but there were always quiet moments when his thoughts drifted back to Bella. He missed the simplicity of their video calls in the evenings and the warmth of her voice, but now that his phone no longer had signal, communication had returned to emails, timed video calls at the base computers, and handwritten letters.
Edward made it a priority to stay in touch with Bella as much as his schedule allowed. Whenever he had a break, he would find a quiet spot to write her an email, sharing updates on his day, asking about hers, and expressing how much he missed her. Their emails became a lifeline, a way to keep their connection strong despite the miles and time zones between them.
Bella, too, had returned to her life as an English and Art and Crafts teacher, diving back into the rhythm of school after the summer holidays. The demands of her job kept her busy, but she always looked forward to Edward's emails, treasuring each one. She admired his dedication to his duty and understood the constraints that came with his position. They both knew this was part of the reality of their relationship, and they were committed to making it work.
One evening, as Bella sat at her desk grading some homework, she paused to think of Edward. She hadn't heard from him in a couple of days, but she knew that sometimes his schedule was too hectic to allow for regular communication. She decided to send him an email, just to check in and see how he was doing.
"Subject: Checking In
Hi Edward,
I hope you're doing okay and that work isn't too overwhelming. I know it's been a busy time for you, but I just wanted to drop you a quick note to say I'm thinking of you.
If there's anything you need—another care package, maybe?—just let me know. I'd be happy to send one your way. And if any of the female officers need anything, I'd love to add something for them as well. Just tell me what they could use.
I miss you, but I'm doing well here. Back to teaching, and the kids are keeping me on my toes as usual. Looking forward to hearing from you whenever you get a chance.
Take care, and stay safe.
Love, Bella
She hit send and sat back, hoping that Edward would be able to find a moment to respond soon. She knew that her messages were a small comfort to him, just as his were to her. They were both learning to navigate this new phase of their relationship, balancing the demands of their respective lives with the desire to stay connected.
A few days later, Bella received a reply from Edward. She eagerly opened the email, her heart lifting at the sight of his name in her inbox.
"Subject: Re: Checking In
Hi Bella,
Thanks for your message. It came at the perfect time—work's been pretty intense lately, but knowing you're thinking of me really helps. I'm doing okay, just busy, but that's nothing new.
I'd love another care package if you're up for it. The last one was a big hit with everyone, especially the snacks. As for the female officers, I checked with a couple of them, and they mentioned things like hair ties, lotion, and maybe some nice soap. They'd really appreciate it if you could include those. It's kind of you to think of them.
I miss you too. I keep picturing your smile and the way you make everything seem a little brighter. It's tough being away, but I'm counting the days until I can see you again. Stay strong, and take care of yourself too.
I'll try to call you next week when I manage to get to the computer room. Until then, keep the emails coming—they mean a lot to me.
Love, Edward"
Bella smiled as she read his words, feeling a wave of affection and longing. She immediately started planning the next care package, making sure to include all the items Edward had mentioned, along with a few surprises of her own. She found joy in putting together these small tokens of love and support, knowing that they would bring a little comfort to Edward and his colleagues.
As the days passed, Bella and Edward continued to exchange emails, each message a reminder that they were in this together, even when they were far apart. They found comfort in the rhythm they had created, knowing that no matter how busy or distant they were, they had each other to lean on.
When Edward's schedule finally allowed for a video call, they made the most of it, cherishing every minute they could see each other's faces and hear each other's voices. It wasn't the same as being together in person, but it was enough to keep their bond strong.
Also the hope that Edward might be able to come home for Christmas, kept them both going. Until then, they would continue to support each other in every way they could, knowing that the distance was only temporary and that their love would carry them through.
