Prologue: Miss Jigglypuff and the Perverted Wolf
Kaoru wandered through the empty streets, his mind more chaotic than the bustling crowd at Shibuya Crossing. He wasn't sure what he was looking for, but everything felt off, like the world had shifted while he was stuck trying to catch up. The Host Club days were behind him, and everyone seemed to be moving on—except him.
In his last year of high school, he should've been thinking about university and graduation, like Haruhi and Hikaru. Instead, his thoughts were a tangled mess, anxiety tightening in his chest with each step he took. These midnight walks had become his go-to escape from the constant noise in his head.
He sighed, nudging a loose stone with his foot and watching it skitter across the sidewalk. It struck him then that he had no idea where he was. The streets had blended together in a haze as he wandered, lost in thought. Suddenly, he found himself standing in front of a playground—a sad little spot featuring a swing set and a bench hidden in the shadows of a couple of trees. The pale streetlights cast an eerie glow over everything, making it feel like one of those places parents warned their kids to stay away from.
With a mix of curiosity and resignation, Kaoru slumped onto the bench, leaning back as he stared up at the sky, hoping the stars would calm the storm raging inside him. Was he being overdramatic, or did he just need a distraction? Either way, sitting here in the dark like some angsty poet wasn't exactly helping.
A faint sound broke through his thoughts. Was someone… crying?
He sat up, squinting through the dim light until he spotted a figure on the swing—a girl in a pink Jigglypuff onesie. He blinked, trying to process the sight. She swayed gently, the onesie glowing faintly under the streetlight. For a second, it felt like time had hit pause, trapping them both in this weird moment.
Kaoru's first instinct was to turn around and leave her to whatever midnight crisis she was having—it wasn't his problem. But something made him stop. She looked so small and lost, wrapped up in that ridiculous onesie that made her seem even more vulnerable and small. Her shoulders shook with quiet sobs, and something in him couldn't just walk away.
Also, if Milord knew he'd bailed on a crying girl, he'd never let him live it down. Kaoru could almost hear the lecture now—something about "the duty of a host" and how "not even a Jigglypuff onesie should ever deter a true gentleman." That thought, plus his nagging conscience, made him pull out his handkerchief. It wasn't much, but it was certainly better than nothing.
With a sigh, Kaoru stepped out of the shadows and walked toward her. "Hey," he said softly. "Are you okay? I know it's not much, but—"
The girl jolted, her eyes wide with panic as she scrambled back. "Wait, I'm just trying to—" Kaoru started, but before he could finish, he tripped over his own feet and fell forward, landing right on top of her.
Awesome. Now he was officially the creepy guy who tackles girls in the middle of the night. Just his luck. Before he could get up, she shoved him off with surprising strength. "What the hell?!" she yelled, her voice sharp with fear. "What do you think you're doing, you freak?!"
Kaoru quickly backed off, raising his hands in defense. "I'm sorry! I was just trying to help! Please stop screaming—you're going to wake everyone!" His heart raced as he glanced around, half-expecting someone to pop out and start yelling at him.
"That's the point, genius!" she shot back, her eyes blazing. The last thing he needed was the whole neighborhood waking up. She didn't seem to care though, and in a desperate move, he reached out and clamped a hand over her mouth. "Please, stop! I'm not trying to hurt you, I just—"
But she wasn't having it. Her eyes narrowed, and before he knew it, she bit down hard on his hand. "Ow!" Kaoru yanked his hand back, wincing. "What the hell? I was just trying to help!"
"Help?!" she spat, jumping to her feet. "You sneak up on me, tackle me, and call that help? What kind of twisted, heroic fairytale do you think this is, 'Little Red Riding Hood and the Perverted Wolf'?"
Kaoru couldn't help it—a snort of laughter escaped him. "Twisted? Maybe. But in this fairytale, it's the Wolf who gets bitten by Little Red. Guess we're rewriting the story." He tried to straighten up, brushing dirt off his clothes.
She glared at him, eyes full of suspicion, but he still found the whole thing too ridiculous not to laugh. "Okay, I admit that didn't go as planned. But seriously, I'm not a pervert. I saw you crying and just wanted to offer you a handkerchief. That's all."
Miss Jigglypuff—because what else was he going to call her—crossed her arms, still glaring. "Oh, so that's what we're calling it now—offering a handkerchief?"
Kaoru sighed, trying to keep a straight face. "I swear, it was just a handkerchief. Here, see?" He held it out, making sure to keep his distance this time. "I was just trying to be chivalrous."
"Chivalrous?" she echoed, disbelief all over her face. "Yeah, right. You just attacked me and tried to shut me up! Keep your creepy chivalry to yourself."
Kaoru blinked, realizing how this must have looked from her perspective. "Wait, it was an accident!" he called out, but she was already turning away, her anger far from soothed.
He watched her storm off, her Jigglypuff tail bouncing behind her, throwing him one last suspicious glance before disappearing into the night.
Kaoru stood there, stunned and bemused, trying to make sense of what just happened. His hand throbbed where she'd bitten him, but he couldn't help but laugh at the sheer craziness of it all. Offering a handkerchief had never been this complicated.
Shaking his head, he turned to leave, only to feel something small underfoot. He glanced down to see a delicate gold necklace lying in the grass. Bending down, he picked it up and squinted at the tiny kanji etched into it.
The first kanji was 愛, meaning "love," and the second, 玲, meaning "exquisite" or "clever." "Ai-Rei…" he murmured, rubbing his thumb over the pendant. It had to be hers.
Despite how chaotic their encounter had been, he couldn't just walk away without returning it. Guess he had some detective work ahead—he'd have to find her again, even if it meant risking another crazy encounter.
As Kaoru made his way home, a smirk played on his lips. Life was changing fast, but one thing was clear—his uncanny ability to stumble into the weirdest situations and meeting the most unexpected people would never fail to amuse him.
A/N: Hi everyone,
A few years ago, I posted this story idea but ended up taking it down because the writing was awful. However, I've fallen in love with the manga all over again, so I'm challenging myself and my English skills to give it another try! Please bear with me if you notice any grammatical or stylistic errors—my English has gotten quite rusty and I need a lot of time to write something remotely coherent, I also don't have anyone to proofread my stuff.
This story is set after the manga's ending, with Kaoru in his final year of high school. I hope you enjoy it, and I'd love to hear your thoughts. I do apologize in advance for irregular posting schedules. Life and work keep me quite busy, and I want to make sure the chapters I share aren't a complete mess. I haven't fully mapped out the plot as well, so I'll be going with the flow as I write. But I did put a lot of thought in it (even spend days considering what title would be fitting) so just bear with me please, lol. Your feedback, criticism, and suggestions are always welcome!
