Chapter 1: Late Night at Honey-senpai's

Eh? Kao-chan?" Honey-senpai's voice sliced through the stillness, a mix of confusion and surprise lacing his words as he blinked at Kaoru. The small, blonde senior—now a 20-year-old engineering student at Ouran University—stood in the doorway, clad in pastel blue pajamas, holding a half-eaten slice of cake in one hand and his ever-present Usa-chan in the other.

Kaoru didn't bother with explanations; he slipped past Honey-senpai, stepping into the warm embrace of the house. "Hi Honey-senpai, mind if I crash here tonight?" he asked, weariness heavy in his voice. "I couldn't stand being at home any longer. I needed a change of scenery."

Honey-senpai's eyebrows shot up, concern painting his features as he followed Kaoru inside and shut the door. "Uh, sure, Kao-chan," he replied, clearly puzzled. "Does Hika-chan know you're here?"

Kaoru shook his head, sliding off his shoes and venturing deeper into the house. "He wasn't back from his graphic design classes yet. I left him a note."

As he glanced back at Honey-senpai, he caught the familiar glimmer of worry in his eyes—a reminder of the last time Kaoru had shown up unannounced. That rough patch when he and Hikaru had been tangled in their feelings for Haruhi had created a rift so deep that Hikaru stayed at Mori-senpai's, while Kaoru had found refuge here with Honey-senpai. The memory made him feel pretty awkward, but the comforting familiarity of Honey-senpai's home was like a warm blanket, easing the tension in his chest.

With a determined stride, Kaoru made his way down the hallway toward Honey-senpai's room, feeling as if he were in the comfort of his own home. He briefly wondered if his bold entrance was pushing it, but quickly brushed off the thought. After all, what were friends for if not for barging in unannounced? Honey-senpai trailed behind without a word of complaint; Kaoru figured he was used to his antics by now.

Reaching the door, Kaoru pushed it open and made a beeline for the bed, collapsing onto it with a sigh of relief. Honey-senpai perched on the edge next to him, his ever-curious gaze locked onto Kaoru, as if trying to unravel the mystery of why his friend had decided to camp out in his room.

"Kao-chan," Honey-senpai began cautiously, "what's going on? Are you and Hika-chan fighting again?"

"Nah, not this time." Kaoru shook his head, a weary smile playing at his lips. Honey-senpai's expression shifted, a mixture of puzzlement and worry flooding his features. "But… is it still about Hika-chan?"

"It's sort of about all of us," Kaoru admitted, running a hand through his hair, his gaze drifting to the intricately designed ceiling as if the answers might be hidden up there.

Honey-senpai shifted closer, his tone softening. "All of us?"

"Yeah," Kaoru murmured, still fixated on the ceiling. "Honey-senpai, does the way things are right now… I don't know, does it bother you? Even just a little bit?"

Honey-senpai paused, mulling over Kaoru's words. "You mean how the Host Club isn't around anymore? How everyone's busy with their own lives, and we don't see each other as much?"

"Exactly," Kaoru nodded slowly, reluctant to confront his own feelings. "I mean, look at everyone now. Milord is deep into his management undergrad and is constantly on the move, training to become the Suoh family successor. Kyoya's off at Harvard, tackling Economics. You and Mori-senpai have your studies and family responsibilities. And then there's Haruhi and Hikaru—they're both so caught up in their own stuff, preparing for graduation and university."

Honey-senpai's expression softened, a wistful smile playing on his lips. "Yeah, everyone's pretty busy these days. It's a little sad, isn't it?"

"It is," Kaoru sighed, nostalgia washing over him as he recalled the carefree days of the Host Club, when everything felt simpler, less complicated, less adult. "I should be focusing on university prospects too, but… I just can't seem to get my head in the game. Everything feels so disconnected. Like I'm the only one who hasn't figured out how to move on. I know I want to study fashion design after graduation, and I'm really into it, but… it just doesn't feel like enough. I can't explain it."

Honey-senpai nodded thoughtfully, understanding shining in his eyes. "It's tough when things change; life can move so fast."

"How do you stay so… calm about all of this, Honey-senpai?" Kaoru asked, frustration bubbling to the surface as he tugged at his hair. "Am I being an idiot? I was the one telling Hikaru about independence and doing our own things. But Hikaru… he's handling it all so well. He's diving into graphic design, he got over Haruhi, and he seems… happy."

The admission stung more than Kaoru expected. He and Hikaru had always shared the same feelings and thoughts. Why was Hikaru managing the separation and the end of the Host Club so well while Kaoru struggled? Wasn't he supposed to be the smarter, more mature twin?

He was proud of Hikaru's accomplishments, but why—why did supporting Hikaru's success make him feel so isolated and lonely? Kaoru banged his head against the bedpost in frustration, battling the sinking feeling that he was the worst brother ever.

"Wah! Kao-chan, no!" Honey-senpai yelped, springing into action like a tiny superhero. He dashed to Kaoru's side, flailing dramatically before thrusting Usa-chan into his hands with an expression of utter horror. "Quick, hug him! He'll make it better!"

Kaoru paused, mid-groan, staring at the plush bunny. With a resigned sigh, he pulled Usa-chan to his chest. "Thanks, Honey-senpai," he mumbled, his voice muffled against the soft fur.

Honey-senpai let out a sigh of relief, dramatically wiping imaginary sweat from his brow. "Phew, that was close!"

A small chuckle escaped Kaoru as he watched Honey-senpai's antics, feeling a bit of the tension ease. But then, after a brief silence, the look of concern returned to Honey-senpai's face.

"I think it's important to remember that it's okay to feel lost sometimes, Kao-chan," he said softly. "We all move at our own pace. Just because things are different now doesn't mean we're alone. We're still connected, even if we don't see each other every day. Maybe you just need to find something new that makes you happy. Like how Hika-chan got into graphic design and games. They keep him busy and bring him joy. I'm sure he's felt lonely too, but he's found ways to invest his time in what he loves."

Kaoru nodded, contemplating how Hikaru had turned to his new interests to cope. It wasn't easy for him, especially with Haruhi around after everything that had happened. Kaoru knew Hikaru had struggled more with the heartbreak than he had.

"Maybe you're right, Honey-senpai. I just... don't know what this 'something new' should be. Fashion is still my passion, but right now, I'm feeling completely uninspired. Maybe that's why I've been so frustrated with it lately and why it's so hard for me to pick it up again."

Honey-senpai patted his hand reassuringly. "You'll find it, Kao-chan. Don't worry about the creative block. Even the best artists go through dry spells. It's just part of the process. When your inspiration returns, you'll be even more passionate about your work."

He looked thoughtful for a moment before continuing. "You know, when I started university and got busier, Takashi and I didn't get to see each other as often. We couldn't visit you guys all the time either. I spent a lot of lunch breaks by myself, and I could only bring Usa-chan along occasionally because I lost a bet to Takashi! But during that time, I found comfort in someone special."

Kaoru raised an eyebrow, curious. "Oh? Who's this someone special?"

Honey-senpai's face lit up with a warm smile. "Reiko-chan. She's been great company and helped me through some of those lonely times."

Kaoru's eyes widened in surprise. "Kanazuki-hime? I thought you two were just friends. Are you… dating now?"

Honey-senpai's smile grew softer. "We're close, but I haven't officially asked her to be my girlfriend yet. I care about her a lot, but I want to make sure that if we do start dating, it won't interfere with her personal growth."

Kaoru looked at him skeptically. "Senpai, no offense, but it's been like two years since she started liking you. She was sixteen then, and she's eighteen now. You're not just keeping her on the hook, are you?"

He remembered how Kanazuki-hime's crush on Honey-senpai had started all the way back in freshman year. They'd even gone on a date once, but apparently it hadn't led to anything serious. Back then Kaoru thought that Kanazuki-hime's weird obsession with black magic and curses might have freaked Honey-senpai out at some point, leading him to keep things strictly friendly between them.

Honey-senpai's expression grew serious. "I understand why you might think that but I'm very serious about Reiko-chan. It's not about playing with her feelings. I just want to make sure we're both ready for a relationship that won't hold her back." He hesitated, then continued, "I think Reiko-chan seems intimidating to others because she's really into black magic and curses, but she's still so young. There's an innocence about her, and honestly, she can be a little naïve. I just don't think it's right to ask her out yet. She still has a lot of trouble communicating with others, and I believe she needs a true friend she can rely on, not just a boyfriend. If things don't work out between us, it could really hurt her. I can't be the only one she depends on. That would only hurt us both in the long run."

It struck Kaoru again how mature Honey-senpai really was, far beyond the childish facade he often showed. It was clear he genuinely cared about Kanazuki-hime's well-being, not just his own feelings.

"I'm sure everything will work out, Senpai. You and Kanazuki-hime seem good together," Kaoru added, managing a smile. "And the Tarot cards were all in your favor as well," he joked lightly.

Honey-senpai's conflicted expression slowly transformed into a gentle smile. "Yeah, I want to wait until the time is right, until Reiko-chan has more people and experiences in her life to support her. If, after all that, her feelings for me are still strong, then I'll definitely ask her to be my girlfriend. You know… I think it's super adorable how flustered she gets around me, or how she struggles to ask me out on dates. But she tries so hard, even if she's not great at it. I'm really proud of her."

Kaoru gasped dramatically, clutching his chest as if wounded. "You are so cool, Honey-senpai. So manly…" He swooned theatrically, eyes wide with admiration. "Only a heartthrob would say something like that!"

Honey-senpai blinked at Kaoru's over-the-top reaction, then giggled. "Kao-chan, you're so silly!"

As the night wore on, Kaoru and Honey-senpai reminisced and laughed about old times. It was a nice distraction, and Kaoru felt a little lighter despite the weight of his worries. When Honey-senpai offered him his bed for the night, Kaoru gratefully accepted, appreciating the comfort and familiarity.

As he lay in bed and stared up at the ceiling, Kaoru's mind began to wander, still processing the night's conversation. Just then, his phone buzzed, pulling him from his thoughts. It was a message from Hikaru, checking in to see if he was okay and suggesting they catch up when he was back home. Kaoru quickly typed a reply, reassuring Hikaru that he was fine and looking forward to their chat. He also attached a selfie of himself and Honey-senpai from earlier.

It didn't take long for Hikaru to respond. Kaoru's phone buzzed again, revealing a selfie of Hikaru giving a peace sign and grinning widely. "Looking good, Kaoru! Can't wait to catch up. Peace out!"

Kaoru smiled at the photo and set his phone aside, allowing his thoughts to drift back to Honey-senpai's advice. "But Reiko-chan really helped me feel less lonely during those times. Maybe you should find someone to keep you company too."

The idea of connecting with someone, of sharing his time with another person, felt like it could be part of the answer he'd been searching for.

Turning to his side, he spoke softly into the quiet room. "So, maybe finding someone—a friend, or even just someone to talk to—that could help." He chuckled softly, feeling a flicker of hope. "I guess Honey-senpai might be onto something."

With that thought in mind, Kaoru let out a content sigh and closed his eyes, ready to drift off to sleep. It wasn't a perfect solution, but it was a start. And for now, that was enough.

A/N: Hi everyone,

Here's another chapter for you! I really enjoyed Kaoru's friendship with Honey-senpai in the manga and wanted to explore it further. I also thought it would be interesting to delve into Honey's relationship with Reiko Kanazuki, since she's not often mentioned in fanfiction. Their unlikely chemistry and relationship in the manga struck me as incredibly cute, and I love how Honey is the first Host to get married. We'll see more of Reiko as the story progresses. I hope you enjoyed this chapter—please share your thoughts!
