Ochako Uraraka had lost too much blood. She could no longer move her limbs and feeling in them had gone cold. Her eyes were barely left open, sight blurry and it took all the effort she could muster just to focus on Himiko's voice. "These feelings are genuine." Ochako barely felt as the needles pierced her arm. "So I'm giving you all of my blood."Warmth flowed in from where Himiko had pierced her arm and Ochako realized what she was doing.
"No… Don't."
But Himiko didn't listen, instead choosing to stitch closed the stab wound that she had given Ochako while speaking everything on her mind before finally laying down next to her. "Thank you for all of this, Ochako. Thank you for making me so happy."
"Himiko," Ochako cried.
"That's… me." Himiko draped her arms over Ochako in the closest approximation of a hug she could manage with what little strength she had left.
Ochako felt Himiko Toga's breath along her forehead. She cried as it slowed and continued as it stopped.
Ochako still wasn't able to move when she felt the weight of Himiko's arms vanish from her chest. Her eyes were too full of tears to be blinded by the flash of light that occurred next to her. It was when she heard the voice that she felt a desperate hope.
"As the source of power, Himiko Toga commands: decipher the laws of the universe and restore her health. Drifa Heal!"
Ochako gasped as nearly all of the pain her mind had been ignoring suddenly vanished and she felt like she could use her limbs again. She stumbled getting up to her knees and latched onto the figure that could only be Himiko in a hug. Had her mind been able to fully process everything she would have realized that Himiko hadn't been wearing anything after losing her transformation but the one she was clinging to was fully clothed.
"I'm glad that worked." Himiko's voice sounded different.
Ochako wiped the tears out of her eyes and looked at her. Himiko looked different. Not much but noticeable. She was… older? "What? How?" were the only things Ochako was able to get out.
Himiko smiled. "It's a long story."
Himiko Toga knew that she was going to die. She didn't particularly believe in an afterlife but figured that if one existed then she could only hope that she would be with Jin and Big Sis Mag, even if that meant they were in a flaming hellscape full of demons. It's not like keeping a girl from dying would cancel out being the one to stab her, or all the other people she killed for that matter. The last thing she expected after taking her last breath was to feel completely healed while standing with some boys in the middle of a glowing circle with some robed men in front of them and holding a spear.
A hundred questions ran through Himiko's head. What was happening? Where was she? Who were these people? Are they enemies? What was with the spear? And most importantly, was Ochako alright?
Since no one was immediately attacking her, Himiko took a moment to better examine the situation. Each of the boys was holding a weapon. Two seemed about her age, one being in a school uniform and holding a bow while the other had a sword. The final one was at least a few years older than her, wore a hoodie and held a shield. Based on their reactions, the boys didn't know where they were either. They all looked around in confusion asking what was happening. Then the oldest looked at her and his eyes went wide. He recognizes me. Just as she prepared to strike, she noticed that he hadn't moved to attack but instead removed his hoodie, and… offered it to her? But why would he…?
"Er… You're kind of…" he gestured to all of Himiko, who then looked down and remembered her current nudity.
"Oh, right." Himiko took the offered hoodie, which was just big enough on her to cover everything that needed covering. "Thanks, I guess."
Just as Himiko finished, one of the robed men finally spoke, "Oh Heroes! Please save our world!"
"What?!" A simultaneous reply came from all four, with Himiko's leaning more towards incredulous than confused. Did they seriously just call her a hero?
It was the boy in the uniform that asked for clarification, "what is that supposed to mean?"
"There are many complications in this situation, but to offer a simple answer to your question, we have just completed an ancient ceremony and summoned you four Heroes."
The robed man continued to explain that their world was in trouble and they summoned the four to ask for their help. All of this just served to further confuse Himiko, who barely knew the isekai genre existed. It's not like her parents would have let her read those kinds of books even if she wanted to.
This time it was the oldest boy who responded first. "Well, it wouldn't hurt to-"
"I don't think so." But he was interrupted by the one with the sword.
"Yeah, me neither."
Okay, so the highschool boys are instantly refusing while the nice older one is smart enough to want more info. Himiko thought about her response. "Gonna need more info and some time to process all this. One minute I'm giving my life on the battlefield, the next I'm who knows where being called a hero? Like, what the hell?" She broke into giggles.
They all looked at Himiko in surprise, the only sound in the room being her own giggling, until the bow hero spoke up. "What reason do we have to help you? We were brought here without warning and if you simply send us back when we are done then it is nothing but free labor.
The speaker for the robed men hesitated for a moment. "Yes, well, we would very much like you to speak with the king. He will discuss future compensation with you in the throne room." He then opened a door and began leading the four of them down a stone hallway. A quick look out the window was enough to tell they weren't in Japan anymore. A sentiment held by the other "heroes" as well.
Himiko felt a chill run down her spine as they entered the throne room. It wasn't just the old man on the throne but the audience of what she guessed were nobles, all looking and judging them. Some looks were curious, most were pretentious, and a few that she caught glimpses of reminded her far too much of her parents.
"Huh, so these kids are the four Holy Heroes?" Himiko's eyebrow twitched at the king's demeanor. So not cute. "My name is Aultcray Melromarc XXXII, and I rule these lands. Heroes, please identify yourselves."
The first to move was the boy with the sword. "My name is Ren Amaki. I am 16 years old, and a high school student." Was saying he was in highschool really necessary? And what was with the cool and aloof act he'd been putting on since they were summoned?
"Ok, my turn. I'm Itsuki Kawasumi. I'm 17, and still in high school." Oh, the bow boy went.
Being the next in the line, Himiko figured it was her turn. "My name's Himiko Toga. I'm 17 and love cute things." Her movements as she introduced herself caused the borrowed hoodie to bounce up a bit further than appropriate, leading to several gasps and concerned looks from the audience.
"Are you not in highschool as well?" Itsuki asked.
"Not like any of them are still open in the middle of a war. Well I guess you could count the hero schools, but those are all acting as shelters instead of teaching classes. Sooo… nope. No highschool for me."
Everyone looked at Himiko as if she had said something crazy.
The king cleared his throat. "Ren, Itsuki, and Himiko, correct?"
"Oh, I still need to go." The oldest hero realized. "My name is Naofumi Iwatani. I'm 20 years old, and a college student."
The king simply gave a grunt and nod in response before continuing. "Now then, I suppose I need to explain why we have brought you here. This country, no, this whole world is on the brink of destruction." He continued on to explain about an ancient prophecy, hordes of monsters coming through rifts in the sky, the hourglass which predicts these "waves" and how the legendary heroes are the only ones said to be able to stop them. Himiko thought it sounded way too much like the plot of one of Tomura's games. The way nobody expected anything to happen until it did, then called for heroes to help was also familiar, she just never expected to be on the hero side of things.
"All right," Ren spoke up, "I think we get the gist of it. Anyway, I'm sure you didn't bring us here thinking we'd save you for free."
"Of course not." Some old guy standing by the king's throne said. "Once you repel all the waves I can assure you we will reward you most handsomely."
Himiko shook her head hearing Ren and Itsuki confirm that they would only help as long as they were getting paid. These were the types Mr. Stainy would've killed in a heartbeat. At least Naofumi seemed like he was genuinely willing to help.
"Now then, Heroes. Please confirm your status, and give yourselves an objective evaluation." The king's words broke Himiko out of her thoughts.
"Huh?"
"Excuse me, but how are we supposed to evaluate ourselves?" Itsuki asked what she was thinking in a more polite manner, only to be answered by an arrogant sounding Ren.
"You mean to say that you all haven't figured it out yet? Didn't you realize it the moment you arrived here?" The fact that he was the only one to find whatever it was should've been a good indicator to him that it wasn't obvious, but he continued on as if they were the idiots. "Don't you see the icon in the lower right corner of your vision? Just focus on it."
"Okay, I have good awareness and I swear that wasn't there before."
"What is all this?" Naofumi asked.
"Do these things not exist in your world, oh Heroes? You are experiencing 'Status Magic.' Everyone in this world can see and use it."
Looking at the screen that popped up in her vision after focusing on the icon, Himiko saw a lot of numbers and stats that she'd only seen in references to video games. If I'm going to be thrown into a video game why couldn't it be an otome game.
Once again the king started up a long winded speech. This time it was about how they needed to get stronger, which apparently involved traveling a lot and fighting monsters. Himiko was fine with that. Fighting is definitely something she was good at and maybe she'd be able to meet some cuties along the way.
Naofumi suggested forming a party. A term which Himiko was happy to understand thanks to how Tomura talked. Unfortunately the weapons said that they couldn't grow while close to each other, which just seemed dumb. Aren't heroes always going on about the value of teamwork and stuff? Why make it so they can't work together. Sure, as someone who'd fought multiple heroes at once she would've been fine with them not ganging up on her, but as the hero it's just annoying.
"I will attempt to secure travel companions for you all. Regardless, evening draws near. Heroes, you should rest for the night and prepare for departure on the morrow. In the meantime, I will find companions for you from the village below."
With that their meeting with the king ended and they were led to their room. Upon arriving they were greeted by a maid who had been instructed to bring clothes for Himiko. Apparently they were clothes that the princess had outgrown, which was surprising since Himiko always thought of lace and frills when she thought of princesses. Instead what she was given was a fairly plain but well made outfit including a red dress short enough to allow freedom of movement. She refused to even attempt to wear the corset 'cause there was no way anyone could fight wearing one of those. She briefly paused considering if the underwear had been the princesses too, but it was better than going commando.
Itsuki waited until Himiko was done changing to voice his question. "I have to ask, why didn't you have any clothes when you were summoned?"
"I'm curious as well," Ren spoke, "You mentioned being in a battle before, but that doesn't explain it."
"Yeah," Naofumi seemed embarrassed to admit his own curiosity on the subject. "I was trying not to say anything but I was wondering too."
Himiko took a deep breath to steady herself and buy time to decide how to answer. It was obvious by now that none of them knew who she was. They didn't seem too disturbed by her smile but that didn't mean they wouldn't turn on her if they learned she was a villain, or even that she drank blood. "The thing is my quirk doesn't really work well with clothes. So if I want it to be effective I need to strip. And I didn't really have the time to get dressed after it ended."
Himiko's explanation hung in the air for a minute before the question came. "What's a quirk?"
"You don't know what a quirk is?"
"No."
"I'm guessing you don't mean a personality trait."
"Not in this context at least."
"Hm… They used to be called Meta Abilities and I think superpowers?"
"Superpowers I know." Itsuki confirmed.
"What?" Naofumi was surprised.
"No way." Ren as well.
"Are you saying you actually had some sort of special power back in your world?" Naofumi asked.
"Yeah," Himiko confirmed, "just about everyone does."
"No they don't."
"I'm not sure where you heard that," Itsuki began, "but only a small portion of the population is born with superpowers. Were you perhaps raised in a specialized group home?"
"I'm pretty sure it would've been on the news if people were known to start developing superpowers." Ren stated flatly.
"Hold on a second." Naofumi interrupted before everyone could start talking over one another. "Himiko, you mentioned a war before. One that I'm assuming involved people using these powers?"
"Yeah."
"And neither of you have ever heard anything about this?"
"No, I haven't."
"Where are you going with this?"
"What if we were summoned from different points in time? If people don't have powers when Ren and I are from but Itsuki is from after they started emerging and Himiko is from the point where they are commonplace?"
"I suppose that makes sense. And a change in terminology over time is possible."
"Maybe. But we should probably compare other things to be sure."
And so they started to compare various pieces of knowledge about their worlds. The different times of the same world theory fell apart when it was revealed that the year Itsuki was from was before Ren. In the end they concluded that they must be from different worlds that all had their own version of Japan. With such revelations they all forgot to ask Himiko what her power was. Then she mentioned how the world felt like a videogame.
"It is one actually."
"Really?" Naofumi looked over to Itsuki.
"Yes. It's nearly identical to my favorite console game, Dimension Wave."
"You're wrong. It's a VRMMO called Brave Star Online."
"I'm a pretty hardcore Otaku and I've never heard of either of those. Might be a different world thing. What about you Himiko?"
"Some of the things seem familiar so I might've heard Tomura talking about a game he played that was like this but I mostly ignored him when he went on his gamer rants. Spinner was the only one able to follow along with them anyways." She shrugged and flopped over onto her bed.
"So Ren and Itsuki played games similar to this world, Himiko heard something from a friend, and I was skimming through a book with some similar concepts when I got summoned." Naofumi rubbed his chin but before he could continue with the thought Ren interrupted him.
"Hold on, you were just reading a book and suddenly you were summoned? That's it?"
"More or less. It felt really weird actually getting transported like I was dizzy and passing out but still conscious. But yeah, before that I was just skimming through the book."
"Well at least you didn't have to learn what death by exsanguination feels like."
"What?" Three voices called out to Himiko.
"I told you already I died on a battlefield. Guess I forgot to mention it was while giving a blood transfusion."
"You died… giving blood." Ren spoke slowly and with disbelief.
"I couldn't let her die, not after everything…"
"Fair enough. I was on my way home from school when I hit a spot of bad luck and got caught up in a murder case. It was the talk of the town at the time. I was with a good friend. I remember saving him, and I remember the criminal getting arrested…Anyway, so then, before I knew it, I woke up here."
"Makes sense," Naofumi commented. "Pretty cool of you though, isn't it? Saving your best friend and all? How about you Itsuki, any tale of heroics to cause you to get brought here?"
"I'm afraid not. I was on my way home from prep school. I went to cross the road, but a dump truck came screaming around the corner at full speed. And then…"
"So I really am the odd man out for this."
Ren and Itsuki both got quiet before Ren spoke. "Well with the shield you were going to be dead weight regardless."
"Huh?"
"I'm afraid it's true." Itsuki added. "The shielder class may be easy to start but it's useless by early midgame."
As Naofumi slumped dejectedly, Ren and Itsuki started talking about which hunting areas they would go to.
"Hmm… Well, it will be fine. I mean, we are in a whole new world! Even if I'm not the strongest character, I'm sure something will work out."
"That's the spirit."
"Wahh." Naofumi jumped in surprise, not having heard Himiko approach him.
Himiko giggled at his reaction. "You're too easy."
Soon enough a maid came to collect them for dinner. Dinner itself being strange. Both the food which had familiar flavors in unexpected places and the fact that they were being watched by over a dozen cooks hoping to see how the heroes responded to their dishes.
Finally it was time to head to bed, needing a good night's sleep to prepare for a new adventure.
Author's Note:
I've actually had this idea for a while now and only got around to actually writing it because the corresponding episode aired. No clue when I will get around to writing a second chapter since I've been sucked into reading MHA fics instead of writing my own for several years now.
If anyone is confused about Himiko coming back to MHA and healing Ochako, the weapon spirits give their heroes a choice of reward after they save the world: A) Stay in that world and live as a hero, B) Return to their home world with the option of making a few changes to reality (compared to 3 wishes sort of deal), C) Go home with the option to return (able to deal with any unfinished business back home before live out option A). Himiko chose C and the world of MHA is weird enough to allow magic and the spear to function normally even without levels and status magic.
