Chapter 56
Once she had Santana settled, Brittany threw their pukey clothes into the tub with some detergent and water to get the majority of the vomit off them.
She then gathered the things she needed to clean the landing; a bucket with water and Pine-Sol, a pair of rubber gloves, a scrub brush, a garbage bag, and a roll of heavy-duty paper towels. She was glad they had a roll of the heavier duty one even as she wondered why they had them.
She called the police station and talked to Officer Barron, the officer that had helped them earlier that morning, and told him that Susan had shown up and was causing trouble. He promised someone would be there shortly.
When she opened the door, she was actually surprised to find Susan still standing there; she had to fight a laugh because the woman was covered in vomit.
Brittany closed and used her key to lock the door.
"Brittany Susan! Let me in to get cleaned off right now!" Susan demanded.
Brittany threw her several paper towels but otherwise ignored her as she knelt down and started cleaning up the vomit. She used the paper towels to get the majority of the vomit up, tossing them into the garbage bag. Susan was still yelling at her but she'd learned how to tune her out long ago. She glanced over and saw that Susan had used the paper towels (to little effect, Brittany was gratified to see) and had dropped them on the ground. Brittany picked them up and stuffed them in the garbage bag. She tied the bag off and tossed it toward the back stairwell; it led out to the parking lot behind the building, which is where the dumpster was located. She then knelt back down and grabbed the brush from the bucket and started scrubbing.
"Brittany! Get off the floor! You're not a lowly scrubwoman! That little beaner should be cleaning her own mess; she's a spic, that's what they're born to do anyway! Filthy little dyke. Drunk and high and has you on your knees cleaning her mess. Are you even listening to me?" She shrieked.
"No." Brittany said plainly and continued cleaning.
"Dammit, Brittany! I am covered in vomit because of your little hoochie mama and you are ignoring me and won't even let me in to get cleaned up! What is wrong with you? Too many fish tacos?"
Brittany was satisfied that the landing was clean. She glanced over and saw that the vomit hadn't reached the stairs. She sighed and stood up, turning to go back into the apartment, still ignoring the shrieking harpy that had birthed her.
"Finally!" Susan made to push past Brittany and Brittany finally had enough. She whirled on her mother and dumped the bucket of scummy water over her head. "WHAT THE FUCK IS THE MATTER WITH YOU?! WHY WOULD YOU DO THAT?!"
Brittany looked at the now soaking wet woman and simply said. "There. You're clean. You can go now."
The bottom door opened and Officer Barron and the officer from last night, Larry (Brittany didn't think they'd gotten his last name), started walking up the stairs.
"Brittany, everything okay here?"
Brittany shook her head. "I came here because Santana had messaged me that she was home. I walked in and found Santana slumped on the floor and this harpy raging at her. I'm sure Santana told her to leave but she's prone to migraines and she's got a really bad one right now so she's asleep. I've asked her to leave several times but she's refused and keeps trying to get into the apartment. Which means she's trespassing right now, right?"
Officer Barron nodded. "Ma'am, we're going to have to ask you to leave voluntarily or we'll remove you. Brittany, when Santana wakes up, have her contact me if she wants to press charges."
"Press charges? Against ME? That queer little border jumper puked on me! I want to press charges!"
"Ma'am, had you not been where you were not wanted, you would not have been here to be vomited on. I'm asking you again to please leave under your own power."
Brittany could tell Susan was getting ready to explode. She hoped the older blonde would. She'd love to bear witness to the cops taking her down.
"You listen to me Sambo … Do you know who I am? I will have your badge! I demand to be allowed into this residence to clean up before I go anywhere!"
Officer Barron raised a brow at Susan. He was a tall, muscular, black man. Brittany wondered what the woman hoped to gain by insulting the man.
Officer Larry had been quiet throughout. He was an average white guy; average height and weight – if a little more muscular – light brown hair, light brown eyes. He had been standing two steps down from the landing while Officer Barron, Susan, and Brittany were on the landing. At Susan's slur toward his partner, he stepped onto the landing and into Susan's personal space. "What did you call him, ma'am?" The tone wasn't threatening, exactly, but it caused Susan to back up a step.
"I … uh … I …" Susan stammered.
"Ma'am, Ms. Pierce has asked you to leave several times. My partner asked you to leave twice. You have failed to comply with these requests." He pulled out his handcuffs and grabbed one of Susan's wrists. "You are under arrest for trespassing and willfully failing to comply with a legal order. You have the right to remain silent. Anything you say or do may be used against you in a court of law. You have the right to consult an attorney before speaking to the police and to have an attorney present during questioning now or in the future. If you cannot afford an attorney, one will be appointed for you before any questioning, if you wish. If you decide to answer any questions now, without an attorney present, you will still have the right to stop answering at any time until you talk to an attorney. Knowing and understanding your rights as I have explained them to you, are you willing to answer my questions without an attorney present?" He had managed to snap the first cuff on but Susan struggled against him, trying to shove him away. "We'll add resisting arrest and assaulting an officer as well." He grabbed her and forced her to her knees so he could finish handcuffing her before leading Susan down the stairs; Susan screaming the whole way down.
Brittany watched in disbelief. She turned to Officer Barron. "Um?"
Officer Barron laughed. "Larry is a good cop. He's quiet, reserved but he doesn't put up with any nonsense. He'd have let me lead and stayed in the background but she crossed the line calling me 'Sambo'. We definitely could have arrested her after my first order to leave the premises but," he shrugged, "I was hoping to avoid all that with a peaceful resolution." He chuffed. "Should have known better after I spoke to you girls this morning." He shook his head. "She won't be bothering you for a bit. She'll be arraigned and assigned bail. Please tell me you're not going to bail her out."
Brittany shook her head. "Not a chance. Santana was barely conscious when I got here and Susan was screaming at her. Nope. She can rot." She sighed. "I'm gonna have to call my dad, though." She took off the rubber gloves and dropped them in the bucket and took a deep breath. "Okay, smells like Pine-sol and not vomit so that's good." She glanced at the landing and grabbed the container of pet-friendly rock salt, shaking it all over the landing and the top two stairs. "Just to be safe."
Officer Barron smiled at her and offered his hand. Brittany shook it and smiled at him. "Thank you Officer."
"Glad to be of help, Ms. Pierce. You know how to reach me if you need me."
She nodded and unlocked the door, re-entering the apartment as he walked down the stairs to join his partner.
