Trick or Treat
The cool autumn air settled over Pallet Town, carrying with it the crisp scent of fallen leaves and the unmistakable feeling of Halloween. The town was alive with excitement as families decorated their homes with jack-o'-lanterns, cobwebs, and skeletons. But no one was more excited than Ash Ketchum and his friends, who were gathering for a night of trick or treating.
Ash stood in front of his house, adjusting the infamous Ghostface mask from the Scream movies. Dressed in the black hooded cloak, complete with a plastic knife, he grinned under the mask. Tonight, he was Ghostface, the mysterious slasher who terrorized his friends on screen.
"Hey, Ghostface! Ready to terrorize the neighborhood?" a familiar voice called.
Ash turned to see May approaching, dressed as Sidney Prescott, the resilient protagonist of the Scream franchise. She had opted for a casual look, wearing jeans and a white T-shirt, complete with a small bloodstain from her fake knife wound. Her brown hair was pulled back in a messy ponytail, and she was carrying a toy phone just like Sidney always did when she got those creepy calls.
Ash lifted his mask and smiled. "Sidney, you're looking great! Think you'll survive the night?"
May laughed, rolling her eyes playfully. "I always do, don't I?"
The rest of the group arrived shortly after, each decked out in their horror movie costumes. Dawn came as Tiffany, the bride of Chucky, dressed in a white gown with a black leather jacket, her blonde wig tousled and messy. Brock, towering above everyone else, had gone all out as Leatherface from The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, complete with a toy chainsaw that he revved up every few minutes for dramatic effect.
Gary had chosen Jason Voorhees from Friday the 13th, his hockey mask obscuring his face while he wielded a large machete. Drew, meanwhile, had decided to be the mischievous killer doll, Chucky, wearing overalls and a red-striped shirt, his face painted to look scarred and doll-like.
Misty had chosen a more classic look, she was dressed as Carrie from the film of the same name, her prom dress splattered with fake blood and her red hair wild and tangled.
"Ready for a night of candy and scares?" Gary asked, lifting his machete in mock intimidation.
"You bet," Ash replied, adjusting his Ghostface mask. "Let's show Pallet Town how Halloween is really done."
The group set off, their costumes catching the attention of everyone they passed. The neighborhood was bustling with families and trick-or-treaters, all excited for the spooky night ahead. Each house they visited was elaborately decorated with spider webs, glowing pumpkins, and eerie music filled the streets, making the perfect atmosphere for the night of horror.
Ash and May led the way, stopping at the first house. Ash couldn't resist playing up his Ghostface character. As they approached the door, he stood behind May, holding the toy knife to her side.
"Trick or treat!" May called out, staying in character as the fearless Sidney.
The door creaked open to reveal an elderly couple, who gasped with delight at the sight of the group.
"Oh my! What a scary bunch you are!" the woman exclaimed, holding out a bowl of candy.
Ash leaned in, keeping his voice low and raspy in his best Ghostface impression. "What's your favorite scary movie?"
The couple laughed as they dropped candy into each of their bags. "You kids are really getting into it this year!" the man said. "Be careful out there, there are all kinds of monsters roaming the streets tonight."
"Don't worry," Brock said, flashing chainsaw. "I know how to handle them."
The group thanked the couple and moved on, their bags already starting to fill with candy.
"I think you freaked them out, Ash," Brock said, his chainsaw revving as they walked down the sidewalk.
"Just getting into the role," Ash replied with a laugh, pulling his mask up to reveal his grin. "It's Halloween. Time to scare some people!"
May shook her head, though she was smiling. "Just don't overdo it, Ghostface. You're supposed to be the villain, yes but we still want candy!"
They continued through the neighborhood, stopping at every decorated house they could find. Each time, Ash would play his part, sneaking up behind his friends or whispering creepy lines from Scream into the ears of unsuspecting trick-or-treaters. Gary, meanwhile, stayed mostly silent, letting his Jason Voorhees presence do the scaring for him, while Brock's chainsaw proved to be the most effective scare tactic of the night.
At one particularly spooky house, the group was greeted by a family who had gone all out with their decorations. The front yard had been transformed into a graveyard, complete with fog machines, animatronic ghosts, and eerie music playing from hidden speakers. The house itself was covered in cobwebs, and the porch was lined with flickering jack-o'-lanterns.
"This is the best house yet," Dawn said, her eyes wide with admiration. "They really went all out."
As they approached the front door, a scarecrow figure suddenly sprang to life, lunging at them from the side. Misty let out a scream and jumped back, her hands flying to her face.
"Gotcha!" the scarecrow laughed, pulling off his mask to reveal a man in his twenties.
Misty scowled, though she couldn't help but laugh along with the rest of the group. "Not cool! You almost made me drop my candy!"
The man grinned, handing out candy to each of them. "Hey, it's Halloween! Scaring people is part of the fun."
Ash, still in his Ghostface persona, stepped forward and leaned in close. "Careful. You never know who might be lurking in the shadows."
The man raised an eyebrow, clearly amused. "You're really committed, aren't you?"
"Always," Ash said with a smirk, his mask pulled halfway up.
They left the house, the group still laughing at Misty's reaction.
"Maybe you should dress as someone less prone to getting scared next year," Drew teased. "You're practically begging to be the victim."
Misty stuck out her tongue. "Says the guy dressed as a murderous doll."
Dawn grinned, flicking the hem of her wedding dress. "Hey, don't knock the classics. Chucky and Tiffany make a killer couple."
May, walking alongside Ash, glanced over at him and grinned. "So, Ghostface, what's the plan for the rest of the night?"
Ash shrugged, his eyes gleaming behind the mask. "More scares, more candy. Sounds like a pretty good plan to me."
As the night wore on, the group's trick-or-treating led them to the town's park, where a haunted maze had been set up as the centerpiece of the evening's festivities. The maze, constructed from towering walls of hay bales, was filled with winding paths, dead ends, and, of course, plenty of scares.
"Think you can handle this, Sidney?" Ash teased, holding up his Ghostface knife as they stood at the entrance to the maze.
May rolled her eyes, though she was smiling. "I've survived worse."
The group paid their entry fees and stepped into the maze, immediately engulfed in darkness. Fog machines filled the narrow paths with thick mist, making it hard to see more than a few feet in front of them. The only sounds were the distant screams of other maze-goers and the eerie music that played from hidden speakers.
"Stay close, everyone," Brock said, revving his chainsaw again for effect. "Wouldn't want anyone to get lost here."
They moved cautiously through the maze, sticking together as they navigated the twists and turns. Every now and then, a figure would leap out from the shadows, a masked clown, a creepy doll, even Freddy Kruger and each time, the group would jump, their laughter ringing through the maze.
At one point, they reached a dead end, and before they could turn around, a figure in a Michael Myers mask appeared from the darkness, blocking their path. Gary, who had been relatively quiet all night, stepped forward and raised his machete.
"Not today, Michael," Gary said in a deep, menacing voice, playing his Jason Voorhees role to perfection.
The Michael Myers actor took a step back, clearly impressed by Gary's dedication to character. "I guess Jason wins this round," the actor said, before disappearing back into the maze.
As they continued through the maze, Ash couldn't help but lean into his Ghostface role even more. Every time they rounded a corner, he would hide behind a hay bale or crouch in the fog, waiting to jump out and startle his friends. By the time they reached the exit, he had successfully scared every one of them at least once, except for May.
"You're really trying hard to get me, huh?" May asked, glancing over her shoulder at Ash as they walked out of the maze.
Ash grinned, lifting his mask. "It's tradition. Ghostface always goes after Sidney."
May laughed, nudging him playfully. "Well, you'll have to try harder next time."
The night was winding down, and the group's candy bags were filled to the brim. They had visited every house, braved the haunted maze, and even managed to pull off a few scares of their own.
As they walked back toward Ash's house, they recounted their favorite moments of the night. Misty's scream at the scarecrow, Brock's chainsaw antics, and Gary's silent intimidation as Jason were all top contenders.
But just as they reached Ash's front yard, Ash suddenly stopped, his expression serious behind his mask.
"Did you guys hear that?" he asked, his voice low.
Everyone froze, glancing around.
"Hear what?" Dawn asked, her eyes wide.
Ash leaned in close to May, lowering his voice to a whisper. "It sounded like... a phone ringing."
May rolled her eyes, realizing what he was doing. "Nice try, Ghostface. But Sidney always survives, remember?"
Ash chuckled, pulling off his mask completely. "Yeah, I know. But I had to give it one last shot."
The group burst into laughter, the tension breaking as they all headed inside Ash's house to end the night with some hot cocoa and a scary movie marathon. For Ash, May, and the rest of their friends, it had been the perfect Halloween, filled with scares, laughs, and just the right amount of horror.
And as the night came to a close, Ghostface ended his night of terror sealing it with a kiss from everyone's favorite final girl.
