"To see you two act so competently after only thirty minutes after obtaining your Provisional licenses is incredible! Are you two long time friends, by any chance?"
"No. We applied what we knew, despite the challenges. We're heroes, regardless if we're provisional or not."
The UA dorms had news crews interviewing both Bakugou and Todoroki regarding their success on their tag team on the criminal group from over two weeks ago. It was only when the students returned to their dorms that the news had any sort of chance to interview these junior up-and -comers on how they felt on their rise to the top of heroism.
Much to the surprise of both the reporters and the dorm, Katsuki kept his answers very succinct and to the point. Shoto responded in even shorter sentences, so the majority of the interview had been focused on his responses in the final cut.
All the students of Class 1-A complimented how popular the interview made Katsuki, to which he just brushed off their admiration as nothing but him saying nothing of value.
Really though, the UA dorm mother had instructed him to keep his temper in mind while being interviewed. He did just that and now wanted to go back in time to be more brash during the interview. Attention of the positive sort hadn't been something he grew accustomed to for most of his life. Being a fighter by nature made him more comfortable when people just kept their distance.
Still, the atmosphere turned from uplifting to slightly somber when the news stream then acknowledged the incident at Daiba City.
Returning to the mainland exposed the students to the recent massacre that took place while they had been at Nabu Island. Hundreds of bodies were discovered to be scattered all over the streets of Daiba; and that number was still climbing with the investigation still being carried out.
Many interviews gave their condolences over the loss of lives that day, though many still held the opinion that the city lacked the means to protect itself because they didn't want it in the first place. ESD officials tried to quell the public distress over how the election to remain outside of the cities jurisdiction cost more lives than had they been there. This debate sparked political analysts to chime in and give their perspective of what this would start to entail.
Clearly, the public were slowly migrating to the school of thought that the Emergency Security Department needed to exist with the uprising of more dangerous criminals becoming emboldened from the absence of All Might. There were those still insistent that heroes were more than enough to keep the world safe, though now even that position had its fair share of doubt circulating within. Compromising safety to preserve an ideal hardly seemed fair if innocent lives were to be the cost paid for such a gamble.
Nobody could say for certain if the ESD were going to be a positive change. The students themselves even felt conflicted over the public starting to shift from hero support to government funded protection.
"Such things are the way they are! One thing that is still clear is that the public sees heroes as the symbol of their society!"
Coming through the doors were the ever scandalous Midnight, along with someone who had no actual purpose of being at UA as an educator. Regarding the teaching material, however, few were as qualified as Mountain Lady when it came to swaying public opinion.
Mineta surprised many of his classmates by recoiling from her with indignity. His first internship had been under the heroine, which translated to him serving as her personal maid for about a week. Working all those hours without pay traumatized Mineta and even caused him to be put off by the mere sight of her in person.
The next lesson to take place that day was specifically focused on public interaction. A mock press stage had been set up outside, which sort of caused Kirishima's enthusiasm to become a bit deflated over the lack of actual hard training.
It didn't detract from the importance of being familiar with interviews with the press. Up first to take the mic was none other than the boy who got overshadowed during an actual interview.
"Fantastic work out there! How do you feel about what you accomplished?"
"What did I do?"
"... Er, this is a mock interview after you completed a mission. Saying thank you for the support is usually the way to go."
"... Thanks."
Being such a literal person made Shoto out to be as exciting as a piece of cardboard. His interests never really concerned what people thought of him, so he grew up to be someone that kept his social interactions as brief as possible. His interview was honestly a bit endearing with how naive he came off as.
What did reinforce his actual capabilities as a hero was when he was asked to demonstrate a signature move of his. Ice suddenly burst from him and stood as an iceberg radiating from where he stood.
Heaven piercing ice wall was the name of the move. Its function in the field could keep crowds from accessing areas that need a temporary barrier as well as being a good offensive option as well. Other moves were at his beck and call as well, though hardly needed to be illustrated after such a powerful move. After him came the rest of his classmates with their own mock interviews.
Mountain Lady demonstrated a startling amount of competence in the exercise with how critical of a skill she valued being able to speak as a public celebrity. The purposes of labeling their special moves did more than just instill fear in their enemies; it gave the heroes a look of being this grand protector with powers that only they understood. To be a symbol meant that the people needed to treat the heroes that protected them with reverence.
Eventually, it was Izuku's turn to demonstrate his new special move. He approached the stage with a cool look in his eyes that he knew his lifelong mentor had whenever he got a little serious. It helped to keep his mind still while having an effect on the older women standing on the stage. They unconsciously licked their lips as what they saw as a man made their way to the thirsty women.
Without skipping a beat, Izuku poured on the charm as the questions regarding his success as a hero were all met with concise answers that impressed even the adults. Regarding the matter of his special move, Izuku steeled himself before honoring the request to see it in action.
It had been over two weeks since he interacted with any of the inheritors of One for All. That didn't mean he had been deprived from interacting with One for All during the same amount of time.
His dreams would occasionally pull him into the space where the inheritors lingered. He would always do the same thing when he found himself there; Midoriya would follow the distant sound of rain until he could see that barrier of a torrential downpour before waking back up. Despite him doing nothing else, he somehow could feel himself become more familiar with certain aspects of the quirk that had been passed down to him with each visit within the strange place.
The right arm was slowly raised as Izuku recalled the sensations of what controlling Black Whip felt like. He remembered to breathe and remain calm as the power slowly started to pour freely out of its containment. The shock of the quirk flowing through him felt significantly less jarring, allowing Izuku to utilize more of that power to his will.
From out of his gloved fists, tendrils sprouted from his wrists and palm to form a towering entanglement of black webbing that he produced from his hand. It stopped growing when it reached the height of a five story building, startling his classmates and teachers with how much of this new power he could control.
Canceling the ability proved to be significantly easier than it had been last time. Turning to his teachers, the smile he gave them lacked none of the boyish charm that he had become synonymous with.
"That's that."
Meanwhile, both Mt. Land and Midlight were simultaneously devising ways to see if they could drag Izuku to a secluded location without alerting security. Midoriya was blissfully unaware of their intent as he returned to the rest of his classmates.
The Next Day
A meeting had been called between the UA educators and ESD representatives regarding the next internship that was to take place in a few days time. Everything discussed here would determine the sort of direction the students would be taking for the rest of their year as students at UA.
First up on the docket was the concern of the sudden allowance of the work studies program during such a tense time against villains out to do damage against society.
"Aren't we being too reckless with such a compromising program? Shouldn't we keep things under wraps until things are settled?"
It was the ESD representative that presented her case against Vlad's concern over potentially exposing their students to dangerous criminals.
"We cannot afford to allow a scenario where we force the villains to escalate their actions against our own. Sheltering these students would instigate even greater forms of retaliation and put their lives at risk than if we were to proceed with the curriculum as intended. Domestic terrorism is rarely detered with the introduction of obstacles. Providing a security detail to them as the students continue with their studies would prevent unnecessary measures while being the best way we can guarantee their safety."
Another well articulated answer that seemed to go against common logic. Public opinion still felt shaky in regards to how the people felt with how well safeguarded they felt in the hands of their trusted protectors.
More information regarding the students' internship covered details such as patrols and response units whenever something even resembling a threat came too close for comfort. A lot of what was being shown looked incredibly excessive in the opinion of the teachers, yet none wanted to argue against the ESD's professional opinions. Last time they came to that conclusion, all the first year students suffered from their lax countermeasures.
Now wasn't the time for half assed efforts. It either required all their attention or none of it.
Several Days Later
Nezu had a live feed to All Might and Tsucauchi so that they could all go over the information they had available to discuss regarding potential information leaks. All the information they had at their disposal pointed to a conclusion that helped to put All Might at ease.
"As it were, there has been no activity from any of the dorms for the past four months. I can safely say that there are no potential moles from within the student body."
Speaking with authority as the principal helped put the retired hero at ease. Things were finally looking up with the lack of a student becoming a potential security threat.
The meeting went without a hitch with Nezu telling the emaciated educator to go visit his students that very evening for christmas. Hanging up, Nezu then turned his attention to the man in the room sipping at the cup of english tea that he poured for himself while waiting for the UA principal to finish the meeting that he had the chimera orchestrate to mislead the former hero. Additional stresses needed to be avoided for the time being.
"Thank you for your patience, Nakamura-san. I would be more than happy to review the information you have available regarding our potential mole."
Right on cue, a notification from Nezu's organization inbox alerted the educator to the information that Haru wanted to share with him. Opening the files revealed a portfolio with data that the principal knew that only his leader could be capable of retrieving. A lot of the information weighed heavily on the animal hybrid as it referred to how much of a complicated situation that Aoyama was trapped in.
"... No child deserves to be in this kind of situation. What is it that you wish to do, sir?"
Haru placed the cup of steaming tea that he had been sipping on back upon its saucer before lighting a cigarette. There was an ash tray that Nezu kept on the coffee table for Nakamura alone, which caught the ashes he flicked off of the top of the tip of his cancer stick.
"Discretion is key for now, Nezu. Keep leading the others out of the loop with info that'll keep them in the direction I want them to follow. I don't want to be interrupted with anything unnecessary."
"Of course, Nakamura-san."
With that, Haru reviewed a few more points that he wanted to discuss with the UA principal before returning to the UA dorms.
He had a holiday buffet he needed to return to before things started to burn without him there.
UA Dorms
Christmas held itself as a time to be joyful for one's good fortune. So much of what the students went through felt like good fortune helping them survive such horrible ordeals. The entire dorm had decorations strung up all over the commons area with a piping hot meal, ready for the students to gorge themselves upon. All courtesy of Nakamura, the acting dorm mother of UA Academy.
Many of the students were dressed in Santa outfits that fit them in particular. Those who weren't in such festive wear were in their own formal wear for the holiday celebration.
Izuku and Katsuki wore dress shirts with fitted italian dress pants. Appropriate to their personal tastes as well as being fitting to their tastes, Izuku's green dress shirt complimented Bakugou's deep red one for the occasion. Neither wore ties with their sleeves folded up in the correct fashion for such luxurious fabrics. Both were looking incredibly sharp for what was an in-house holiday celebration.
"Merry Christmas!"
With that, the party went underway for all the students to begin unwinding from the stresses of the past year. Still, there was one topic that many of the students couldn't resist speaking of. Even with the Christmas season upon them.
After New Years, the work studies internships would begin anew for the entire school. Many contemplated revisiting their previous agencies while others were on the fence about returning to a familiar environment. Growth rarely occurred where one often trekked for experience. Midoriya shared this sentiment when he answered Kirishima over returning to Nighteye's agency.
As it were, the agency had a lot of slack to pick up after the passing of their head figure. Centipede, the new acting head of the agency, said their work needed to be addressed; especially with the uprising of crime taking place in society.
One person from the agency who wanted to speak to the young teen on a more private measure was none other than Bubble Girl. Apparently, she had an increasing interest in talking to Izuku for the past few months or so. He shared his contact info so that they could catch up on their offtime, much to Centipede's amusement. The insect hybrid was just happy that the girl finally looked to be interested in starting a relationship after working nonstop for the past few weeks.
Bakugou had someone try and plant a santa hat on him out of nowhere. He got asked in Best Jeanest could look forward to seeing the former intern paying him another visit for the new year.
While readjusting the hat on his head reluctantly, Katsuki looked back on one thing the hero asked the boy to do once he claimed the provisional license for himself. He endured a lot of bureaucratic work during his time there, yet he did become aware of the finer nuances that came with being a hero after Haru asked him to endure the environment. The request Best Jeanest gave Bakugou was for him to come visit him with said license when the teen felt he could be a hero that he himself would be proud to look upon as a role model. A sentiment that he didn't quite feel strongly about as of the moment. He would return, but doing so now would only insult the hero who invested their time in training Katsuki.
Many of the students were still buzzing about when the announcement they all were anticipating finally reached their ears.
"Alright guys; come and grab a seat! We've got a real treat for you all here."
Momo and Toru assisted Haru in the kitchen as he put the final touches on dorm 1-A's christmas dinner. He completed all the other dorm dinners before this one and had them all delivered to their respective destinations before completing the final meal of the evening. A shmorgous board of roasted pheasant, mashed potatoes, collard greens, cobb salad, stewed goat, etc.; filled the table to the brim with a marvelous harmony of aromas radiating throughout the room.
After placing the dishes upon the table, Haru then ushered in a nervous looking Eri from upstairs. She had been hard at work putting on her Christmas dress that looked absolutely precious on her.
"Tricky… Treat?"
"That's Halloween, kiddo. Nice attempt, though."
He picked up his daughter and held her in his arms as the other student's paid their compliments to how lovely Eri looked in the festive wear. Izuku could see that his surrogate little sister developed her horn a bit since the last time they saw each other as well. He didn't want to pry, so he made a mental note of it to ask his mentor about it later.
Eri started passing out easter eggs she painted herself, which Haru silently asked the students to just take from behind his daughter to appease the child's lack of understanding for holiday traditions.
From there, the Christmas spirit took over for the evening and carried the entire dorm throughout the night with festive songs and gift exchanges. The gift exchange had put into perspective what a polyamorous relationship with multiple woman entailed as Izuku presented his personal gifts to the girls of the dorms. His very personal gifts to each girl looked to have cost a pretty penny with how costly each present seemed to be.
Bracelets, rings, necklaces; all of them were very personally created while being made of actual precious metals. Midoriya took a job under his mentor periodically and suffered through the hell that was his food truck to get as much financial help for these presents. Other places for employment didn't offer the same efficient pay as the dorm mother's food truck, though the trade off was how taxing the work had been.
In the end, Izuku got his fair pay in the end and managed well enough with his current circumstances. The boys cut Midoriya some slack after realizing how much commitment he put into his relationships.
Returning the sentiment, the girls all gave Izuku something personal as well. Things like men's accessories and fine stationery all hit Izuku where it mattered. He happily accepted it all while being truly thankful for their kindness. The new cufflinks, tie, and watch he received all were put on immediately. What the girls were privy to see made all their mouths water. Midoriya looked nothing short of a male model in formal wear; and they all could feel their patience wear thin in seeing their man out of said formal wear.
Throughout the actual gift exchange, it somehow caused Eri to be gifted an oversized sword model that looked to be out of some sort of rpg game. Tokoyami received her sincere thanks and tried his best to hide the giddy joy that came with such an adorable gesture of kindness.
