That evening, June was with Jeffrey.
"How was your day, June?" Jeffrey asked.
"Okay. I ended up calling Perry twice today."
"What happened that made you call him?"
"Well, you know Lauren Hutchinson, right?"
"Yes. What about her?"
"We called the police department because there sounded like somebody wanted Lauren arrested."
"Arrested for what?"
"Murder, that's what. Lauren would never do that to anybody."
"Of course she wouldn't. How did Perry react to that?"
"I don't know. Have you noticed anything different about him when you saw him last time we were at his office?"
"I don't think I did. Why do you ask?"
"I'm not sure. Something didn't sound right to me after we gave him those flowers because of his mother passing away."
"I'll go talk with Perry tomorrow. What are your plans?"
"Going to his office tomorrow morning. Maybe we'll talk more about Lauren then."
"What do you want me to do? Did he say anything about having me over?"
"He just said it's not necessary, but you're welcome to show up."
"Thank you, Lauren. I think I can try to help out on the case if he needs it."
"He has a new investigator. That was something new I noticed when I was there with that vase of flowers."
"We're just trying to be friends, June. I've known him for a long time enough to know about him."
"What was he like when he was younger?"
"June, a lot of stuff that's not worth sharing with you. I'm not going to say anything about it."
"Why's that?"
"Because it's got some personal stuff."
"Sorry if I asked."
"That's all right. Do you need to see Lauren again anytime tonight?"
"No. I'll stop by there on the way to Perry's office tomorrow morning and see if she remembers anything else at the time of the phone call to the police."
"I'll call his house now and see if he wants me over to the office."
"Good idea. If there's anything else I can do, let me know and I can help," June told him.
"You've done enough for now, June, but thanks for the offer."
"What did I do?"
"Going to Perry's office with the vase of flowers and calling him about your friend. That's enough."
"All right. If you say so."
"I'll go call Perry soon and see what he wants me to do," Jeffrey told her.
They ate the rest of their supper before Jeffrey went to call Perry at home.
"Thank you for making supper tonight, June. I'll do it tomorrow night."
"Okay. Go call Perry while I take care of the dishes."
"I'll go call him now."
He helped June carry the dishes into the kitchen sink.
"Go call him," June repeated as she turned the sink on.
"I'll let you know what he wants for tomorrow."
"Fine with me."
Perry was home, so he talked with Jeffrey.
"Hello, Perry. This is Jeffrey."
"Hello, Jeffrey. I'm sure June probably told you everything by now."
"Yes, she has. What would you like me to do?"
"I really can't think of anything. She's still coming tomorrow, right?"
"That's what she told me. I'm coming along and see what we both can do."
"She's already done enough for now, Jeffrey. The vase of flowers and the police department. What else has she told you about the case?"
"Only from what you both did at her friend's house."
"If she can come up with something between now and tomorrow morning, that would be a big help, Jeffrey."
Jeffrey spoke up again.
"Perry, June said something wrong with you. Is there anything you need?"
"What did she say?"
"I'm not sure. Is there anything you want to share over the phone or can it wait until tomorrow?"
"It can wait until tomorrow. Even my parents don't know about this since they're not alive. I found out about it when my mother was alive, but I never shared with her."
"Can you give me a clue? I can probably try to figure it out if you give me a hint."
"No hint, Jeffrey. I can share some of it over the phone since I don't know June well enough to trust her with this personal information."
"Go ahead, Perry. I'm listening. Does it have something to do with the law?"
"That would be great, Perry. I'll see you tomorrow."
"The only thing I can tell you is I don't drive much anymore."
"So it has something to do with that case then."
"Yes, it does. Just thankful that my folks wouldn't be hearing this news."
"I'll do whatever I can to help out, Perry. I'll talk with you later."
"Thank you, Jeffrey. You're the best."
"You're welcome, Perry. What time did you say that you wanted us to show up?"
"Ten o'clock."
"You can trust me with your news, Perry. Isn't that why I'm here?"
"Yes. I'll see you tomorrow."
End of conversation.
