Late afternoon, in the same small town. Kid, still reeling from his encounter with Lily, walks with her down the empty streets. She holds his hand, swinging it back and forth with a cheerful, carefree smile as though it's the most natural thing in the world. Despite the strange looks they attract as they walk together—an older, bruised boy in ragged clothes and a bright-eyed little girl—Lily seems oblivious, chattering happily as if they're lifelong friends.

Lily (grinning up at him, with wide, sparkling eyes): You're gonna love my house! We've got so many toys, and a big TV, and lots of snacks! Oh! And a super comfy basement where we can hide if my brothers or sisters try to bug us.

Kid glances down at her, his heart pounding with an unfamiliar mixture of fear and gratitude. The warmth of her small hand in his own makes him feel oddly safe, and he has to remind himself that this moment isn't something he can trust—it's just a fleeting kindness from a child who doesn't know better. But as they approach her house, he feels a growing tension, as though stepping inside will somehow shatter the fragile peace he's found.

Kid (uncertain, pulling back slightly): Are… are you sure this is okay, Lily? I don't… I don't want to get you in trouble.

Lily (giggling, brushing it off): It's fine! My family's used to all kinds of crazy stuff. They'll just think you're, like, a new friend. I mean, you are my friend, right?

Kid feels a tightness in his chest as he nods, unable to meet her gaze. The idea of being her "friend" feels almost too good to be true, like a gift he hasn't earned.

Kid (whispering, almost to himself): Yeah… I guess I am.

Lily grins, pulling him up the driveway toward a large, colorful house that's clearly full of life and chaos. As they approach, Kid feels a surge of anxiety; he's never been inside a house like this, one that's warm, welcoming, and filled with the noise of family. The thought of stepping inside fills him with equal parts hope and dread.

Inside the Loud House

Lily pushes the door open, peeking inside before pulling Kid in with her. The house is chaotic, filled with the sounds of laughter, yelling, and the thumping of footsteps from the floors above. Kid stiffens, glancing around with wide, cautious eyes, his heart pounding as he takes in the scene. Lily tugs on his hand, her voice soft but insistent.

Lily (whispering, with a mischievous grin): C'mon, before anyone sees you! We'll hide in the basement. It's nice and quiet down there.

Kid nods, following her through the bustling house as she leads him to the basement door. They pass by various rooms, each one filled with the signs of a large, busy family: scattered toys, piles of laundry, and laughter spilling from unseen places. Kid feels like he's intruding on something sacred, a world he's never been part of, but Lily's hand in his own keeps him grounded.

They reach the basement door, and Lily pushes it open, leading him down the narrow stairs into a dimly lit room cluttered with boxes, old furniture, and stacks of blankets. She flicks on a small lamp, casting a warm, cozy glow over the space. Kid takes a deep breath, feeling an unexpected sense of relief wash over him.

Kid (softly, glancing around): This… this is really nice, Lily. Thanks for bringing me here.

Lily beams at him, her eyes shining with pride.

Lily: Of course! Friends help friends. Besides, now you don't have to be out in the cold. You can stay here for as long as you want.

Kid feels his throat tighten, and he has to look away, afraid that his gratitude will show too openly. He's not used to this kind of kindness, and he doesn't quite know how to accept it.

Kid (whispering, voice thick): Thank you, Lily. Really… I don't know what to say.

Lily giggles, plopping down on one of the old blankets spread out on the floor. She pats the space beside her, looking up at him expectantly.

Lily (with an innocent smile): You can say it by hanging out with me! We'll tell secrets, and play games, and maybe even have a sleepover if it gets too dark.

Kid's eyes widen, caught off guard by her suggestion. He's never had a "sleepover" before, and the thought of spending the night in a warm, safe place, away from his family's cold indifference, feels like a dream.

Kid (hesitantly, sitting beside her): A sleepover? I… I've never done that before.

Lily gasps, her eyes wide with surprise.

Lily: You've never had a sleepover? Oh, we definitely have to do one then! We can stay up late, eat snacks, and tell spooky stories. And if you get scared, you can just hold Mr. Bun-Bun. (She holds out her stuffed rabbit, grinning)

Kid smiles despite himself, taking the rabbit and holding it close. For the first time in a long while, he feels a faint sense of peace, a flicker of warmth that he hasn't known in years.

Kid (smiling softly): I think… I think I'd like that.

Night Falls in the Basement

As evening turns into night, the sounds of the house above grow quieter. Kid and Lily spend the evening playing simple games, drawing on scraps of paper, and telling stories. Lily's laughter fills the small space, and Kid finds himself laughing along with her, the weight of his troubles momentarily forgotten.

As the night wears on, Lily starts to yawn, her eyes drooping as she cuddles up beside Kid on the pile of blankets. The basement is dim, lit only by the small lamp they'd brought down, and shadows stretch across the walls, giving the room a cozy, enclosed feeling.

Lily (yawning, curling up beside him): Can I… can I sleep here with you? Sometimes I get scared in the dark… but I feel safe with you.

Kid's heart clenches as he looks down at her. He's never had anyone look at him with such trust, such innocent reliance, and the thought that she feels safe with him brings a strange sense of purpose.

Kid (softly, wrapping a blanket around her): Yeah… yeah, you can stay here. I'll keep you safe, Lily. Promise.

Lily smiles, resting her head on his shoulder as she clutches Mr. Bun-Bun, her breathing growing steady as she drifts off to sleep. Kid sits beside her, watching over her as she sleeps, his heart filled with a warmth he hasn't felt in years.

But the peace doesn't last long. The door to the basement creaks open, and footsteps echo down the stairs. Kid tenses, instinctively wrapping an arm around Lily as he looks up to see a figure descending into the dim light.

Lincoln Discovers Kid

A tall, sixteen-year-old boy with white hair and a fierce expression steps into the basement. His gaze immediately zeroes in on Kid and Lily, and his face twists with a mixture of anger and protectiveness.

Lincoln (voice sharp, furious): What the hell are you doing down here?

Kid stiffens, instinctively pulling Lily closer as he meets Lincoln's glare. The warmth and peace he'd felt just moments ago vanish, replaced by a surge of panic. He opens his mouth to explain, but Lincoln cuts him off, his voice rising with anger.

Lincoln (accusingly): Are you… are you some kind of creep? You think you can just hang around here, cuddling up with my little sister? What's wrong with you?

Kid flinches at the accusation, the words hitting him like a slap. He tries to speak, his voice shaking as he stammers out a response.

Kid (defensively): No! I… I wasn't… I would never hurt her. She's… she's my friend.

Lincoln's eyes narrow, his hands clenched into fists as he takes a step closer.

Lincoln (voice icy): Your friend? You think I'm gonna believe that? She's a little kid, and you're… you're some stranger hiding in my house!

Lily stirs, waking up from the noise. She rubs her eyes, looking up at Lincoln with a sleepy frown.

Lily (pouting, confused): Lincoln, why are you yelling? Kid's my friend! He was just helping me not be scared.

Lincoln's expression softens slightly as he looks at Lily, but his gaze quickly returns to Kid, filled with suspicion.

Lincoln (to Lily, still glaring at Kid): Lily, you don't know him. You can't just bring strangers into the house like this. What if he's dangerous?

Kid feels a sharp pang at Lincoln's words, the familiar sting of being seen as a threat, an outsider. He stands up slowly, his hands raised defensively as he meets Lincoln's glare.

Kid (quietly, his voice filled with hurt): I… I didn't want to cause any trouble. Lily just… she was just being kind.

Lincoln (voice cold): Yeah? Well, maybe she's too kind. Because I don't trust you. I don't know what you're up to, but if you think I'm gonna let you stay here with her, you're wrong.

Kid's fists clench, a surge of anger rising in his chest. He's been treated like a burden, a threat, his whole life—and now, here he is, facing the same accusations in a place he thought he could finally feel safe.

Kid (voice trembling with anger): You don't know anything about me. You think you can just… assume I'm some kind of monster? I would never hurt her.

Lincoln's eyes narrow, his voice filled with contempt.

Lincoln (scoffing): So I'm just supposed to believe that? Look at you—you're practically hiding in the dark with her. That's not normal.

Kid's anger boils over, and before he can stop himself, he steps forward, his voice rising.

Kid (furious, voice breaking): I didn't ask for any of this! I didn't ask for her kindness, or… or to be here. But for once, someone didn't treat me like I was… like I was nothing!

Lincoln's face tightens, and for a moment, a flicker of understanding crosses his expression. But the anger between them is too strong, and he shakes his head, his voice harsh.

Lincoln (through gritted teeth): Get out. Now. I don't care what your story is—stay away from my sister.

Kid stands there, trembling, the weight of Lincoln's words pressing down on him. He glances at Lily, who's watching the exchange with wide, worried eyes, clutching Mr. Bun-Bun tightly.

Lily (voice small, pleading): Lincoln, don't be mean… Kid's not bad. He's my friend.

But Lincoln's expression remains firm, and Kid feels a hollow ache in his chest as he realizes that no matter where he goes, he'll always be seen as a threat, an outsider.

With one last, pained look at Lily, Kid turns and heads for the stairs, the warmth and comfort he'd felt just moments ago slipping away as he disappears into the shadows.
