Ron, Hermione, and Harry pushed through the portrait hole into the Gryffindor common room. Ron was practically shaking with tension, his jaw clenched so tight it looked painful. He glanced around the room, his eyes wild, as if searching for some clue or answer that wasn't there.
Seamus and Dean, lounging near the fireplace, glanced up at the trio's dramatic entrance. Seamus raised an eyebrow, looking between Ron's stormy expression and the concerned looks on Harry and Hermione's faces.
"What's going on?" Seamus asked cautiously, setting down his book.
Ron made a noise of frustration, running his hands through his hair as he started pacing in front of the fireplace. "Ginny was in Malfoy's room this morning," he said, his voice laced with disbelief and anger. "She said she was studying, but…I don't know what to think anymore."
Dean stiffened at the mention of Ginny and Malfoy in the same breath. "Wait, what?" He exchanged a quick glance with Seamus, his expression tightening. "In Malfoy's room?"
Ron turned to face them, his eyes blazing with a mixture of fear and frustration. "Yeah, she was there. Said it was for the Potions project, but… she's spending all this time with him, and I just - I don't like it."
Seamus, always one to try and diffuse tension, held up his hands. "Mate, maybe it's nothing. They've got that big project, right? Could just be that."
"Yeah, but in his room?" Ron shot back, his voice rising. "It doesn't make sense. There's something else going on - I just know it."
Dean shifted uncomfortably, his face flushing. "Look, Ron, I get you're worried, but you can't just assume-"
Ron's gaze snapped to Dean, his eyes filled with accusation. "And what would you know about it, Thomas?" he spat, his voice shaking with barely restrained rage. "What, are you going to say she was just 'studying' in your bed as well?"
Dean flinched, his jaw tightening. "What's your problem, mate?"
"Leave him alone, Ron!" Hermione interjected, stepping between them. "This isn't about Dean."
Ron ignored her, his focus still on Dean, his voice shaking. "You think I don't know what happened between you two? That I didn't see how she was after you broke up? And what the hell shouldn't I assume?" Ron snapped, his eyes narrowing. "That my sister isn't screwing around with Draco fucking Malfoy? That she's not...being fucking stupid with the guy who nearly ruined her life?"
Dean's face flushed, a mix of guilt and discomfort clear in his eyes. "I'm not trying to-"
"Just stay out of it!" Ron snarled, his voice breaking.
Seamus, sensing the impending explosion, stood up and grabbed Dean's arm. "Come on, mate," he murmured. "Let's go."
Dean hesitated, looking like he wanted to say something, but then he nodded reluctantly and followed Seamus out of the common room, leaving Ron standing there, his chest heaving with rage and hurt.
Harry watched Ron, concern etched on his face. "Ron, you don't know that anything's happening. She said they were just working."
Ron shook his head, his expression a mix of confusion and anger. "I don't know what to believe, Harry. She was in his room. After everything that happened last time she was alone with him, how can I just trust that it's nothing?"
Hermione stepped closer, her voice gentle but firm. "Ron, you're jumping to conclusions. Yes, it looks suspicious, but you don't have proof that anything is going on between them. You have to talk to her before you accuse her of something."
Ron let out a bitter laugh, shaking his head. "Talk to her? You think she's just going to admit it if something's happening?"
Hermione's heart ached for him, seeing how torn he was. "She's your sister, Ron. She's not going to lie to you. If you just ask her - calmly - maybe she'll explain what's really going on."
Ron's shoulders sagged, and he dropped onto the couch, burying his face in his hands. "But what if she is, Hermione? What if she's with him and she's just not telling us? What if she's…I don't know, doing it to spite us or something?"
Hermione sat down beside him, her voice soft and soothing. "Ron, Ginny wouldn't do something like that to hurt you. She's trying to live her own life. She's working with Malfoy because they were assigned the project together, and yes, they're spending time together, but that doesn't mean she's…that she's involved with him."
Ron lifted his head, his eyes red and raw with emotion. "But what if she is? What if I'm too late to stop her from getting hurt again?"
Harry moved closer, placing a comforting hand on Ron's shoulder. "You're not too late, mate. But you can't protect her from everything."
Ron shook his head, his voice breaking. "But I'm the only one left to protect her. Bill and Charlie are gone, Fred and George are always busy, and Percy's…well, you know. I'm the only one here for her, and I'm failing."
Hermione's heart broke at the anguish in his voice. "You're not failing her, Ron. You're just worried. You love her and want to keep her safe. But Ginny's not a little girl. She has to make her own choices."
Ron's face crumpled, tears spilling over as he finally let go of the emotions he'd been holding in. "But she nearly ended up pregnant, Hermione. He almost ruined her entire life. And now she's back around him, like nothing happened. How am I supposed to just stand by and watch that?"
Hermione wrapped her arms around him, pulling him close as he sobbed into her shoulder. "I know, Ron. I know it's hard. But she's smart. She knows what happened, and she's not going to let herself get hurt again. You have to trust her."
Ron clung to her, his whole body shaking with the force of his emotions. "I just…I feel so helpless. Like I'm the worst brother ever. I should have seen this coming, should have done something to stop it."
Harry knelt down beside them, his voice quiet but filled with determination. "Ron, you're not a bad brother. You're doing your best. I don't like it either but you're losing it, mate. Maybe you need to have a real conversation with her?"
Ron pulled back slightly, wiping his face with the back of his hand. "I just want her to be safe. I don't want her anywhere near Malfoy. For Merlin's sake, his dad…the chamber. She almost died! How could she just forget that? Doesn't she know how worried I am?"
Hermione nodded, her voice steady. "I understand. But you have to trust her judgment, too. She's not going to let anyone hurt her. And if she ever needs us, we'll be there for her. Always."
Ron took a deep, shaky breath, his eyes still filled with pain but less frantic than before. "I just…I don't know what to do."
Hermione squeezed his hand gently. "For now, we just support her. And if you're worried, talk to her. Calmly. Let her know how you feel."
Ron nodded slowly, still looking lost and broken, but some of the wildness in his eyes was fading, replaced by a weary, bone-deep exhaustion. "Yeah, okay. I'll try."
Ginny had barely stepped into the hallway leading back to the Gryffindor common room when she heard footsteps behind her. She turned to find Hermione approaching, her expression a mixture of concern and determination. Ginny felt a pang of anxiety, knowing exactly what was coming.
"Where are you headed in such a hurry?" Hermione asked, her voice calm but probing.
"Back to the common room," Ginny replied, trying to sound casual. "Why?"
Hermione gestured toward the door leading to her Head Girl quarters, which had private access to both the common room and the main hallway. "Can we talk? Privately?"
Ginny hesitated but then nodded, curiosity and a touch of dread coiling inside her. She followed Hermione into the room, which was spacious and orderly, a stark contrast to the chaotic Gryffindor dormitories. Hermione turned to face her, a blend of worry and resolve in her eyes.
"First of all," Hermione began, her tone firm but gentle, "I know you slept with Draco again. Don't even try to deny it."
Ginny's cheeks flushed deep red, and she immediately looked away, fiddling with the hem of her sleeve. "I - how did you…?" she stammered, feeling a wave of embarrassment wash over her.
"I've known you too long, Ginny," Hermione said softly, stepping closer. "I saw the look on your face when we left this morning, and...well, there were other clues."
Ginny exhaled sharply, the fight leaving her shoulders as she slumped against the back of a chair. "Alright, fine. It happened. But please don't tell anyone. Especially not Ron."
Hermione nodded, placing a gentle hand on Ginny's arm. "I won't. I promise. But I need to ask - what is this, Ginny? Is it just...casual?"
Ginny's eyes widened in surprise. "What?"
Hermione's voice softened, her concern clear. "I mean, is this just about...you know, being physical? Because if it is, I'm worried. I've seen how that kind of relationship can hurt people, especially when there are so many complicated feelings involved."
Ginny hesitated, feeling a strange mixture of defensiveness and relief at Hermione's words. "It's not like that, Hermione. I mean, it started out...confusing. But it's more than just sex. We...we actually like each other."
Hermione's eyes widened in genuine shock. "Wait, you mean...you both like each other?"
Ginny nodded slowly, feeling vulnerable but needing to say it out loud. "Yes. I know it sounds insane, but he's different with me. I've seen a side of him that I didn't think existed. It's not just about what happened at that party. We've been talking, spending time together...it's real."
Hermione stared at her, still processing this revelation. "I just - Draco Malfoy? He's been so awful to you, to all of us. How do you know he's not just messing with you?"
Ginny bit her lip, looking down at the floor. "I don't know, Hermione. I don't know anything for sure. But I feel it. When we're together, it's like...he's trying to be better. He's not the same person we've seen all these years."
Hermione took a deep breath, clearly struggling to reconcile this new information. "It's just...hard to believe. I'm not saying you're wrong, I just don't want you to get hurt."
Ginny nodded, her eyes softening as she looked at Hermione. "I know you're worried. And I get it. I never expected this either. But I'm not some naive little girl. I know who Draco is, and I'm not deluding myself into thinking he's perfect. But I also know he's trying, and that means something."
Hermione watched her for a moment, then nodded, her expression thoughtful. "Okay. If you're sure, then I'm here for you. But you need to be prepared for a conversation with Ron. He's already suspicious, and he's not going to let this go. He had an absolute meltdown earlier."
Ginny's eyes snapped back to Hermione's, her irritation with Ron leaking back on to her face. "What kind of meltdown?"
Hermione hesitated, clearly weighing her words carefully. "Ron's struggling, Ginny. He's feeling betrayed, but he's scared too. He's trying to protect you, even if he's going about it completely wrong."
Ginny rolled her eyes. "Protect me? By lecturing me every chance he gets? Making me feel like I'm some kind of 'scarlet woman' just throwing myself at anyone who will have me?"
"I know it doesn't seem like it," Hermione continued, "but he's your brother. He loves you. And Harry...well, Harry told him he needs to actually talk to you, not lecture you. To have a real conversation."
Ginny's expression softened, her anger melting into something more like resignation. "Great. So now I get to have the 'disappointed brother' talk. Fantastic. Can't wait."
Hermione took a deep breath, bracing herself for the next part. "There's something else you need to know. About the Marauder's Map."
Ginny frowned, confusion flickering across her face. "The Marauder's Map? What is that?"
"It's a magical map of Hogwarts," Hermione explained carefully. "It shows the entire castle and the grounds, and more importantly, it shows where everyone is at all times."
Ginny's face drained of color as the implication hit her. "You mean...they can see where I am? All the time?"
Hermione nodded slowly, watching Ginny's reaction closely. "Yes. Harry and Ron have it. If you're going to be sneaking around with Draco, they can see it."
Ginny's fists clenched at her sides, her eyes blazing. "So they've been spying on me?"
"Not exactly," Hermione said quickly. "But they looked you up this morning when they were worried about you not coming back last night. I'm just warning you, sneaking around isn't going to work. If you and Draco are together - or if you're going to continue whatever it is you're doing - you need to tell Ron."
Ginny's jaw tightened, anger and betrayal swirling inside her. "So what? They just get to track me like I'm some kind of criminal? That's bloody invasive, Hermione!"
"I know, Ginny," Hermione said softly. "But think about it. If you try to hide this, they're just going to use the map more. They'll jump to the worst conclusions. If you're honest with Ron, it'll be hard at first, but at least you'll be taking control of the situation."
Ginny shook her head, pacing the room, her mind racing. "Un-fucking-believable."
Hermione stepped forward, placing a gentle hand on Ginny's arm. "I know you're angry, and you have every right to be. But you need to decide what you're going to do. If you're serious about Draco, or even if this is just something you're working through, you have to be honest. With Ron, with yourself...maybe even with Draco."
Ginny pulled away, wrapping her arms around herself. "I don't know what I'm serious about," she admitted quietly. "I don't know what this is. But I'm not ready for everyone to freak out over it. Not again."
Hermione nodded, giving her space. "Then figure it out. But just remember, sneaking around is only going to make things worse. For everyone."
Ginny swallowed hard, her throat tight. "I just need time. To think."
"Take it," Hermione said gently. "But be prepared. Because whatever you decide, it's going to come out eventually. Your project is over on Monday, you won't have that as an excuse anymore. And it'll be better if he finds out on your terms."
Ginny nodded slowly, still processing everything Hermione had told her. She felt trapped, like every decision was going to explode in her face, no matter what she chose. But Hermione was right. She needed to figure this out, and soon.
