Chapter 16: Operation Library
The door to Bluey and Bingo's bedroom creaked open slowly and Chilli tip-toed her way in. "Girls, you awake?" She whispered, rubbing Bluey's head in the process. Bluey's eyes opened slowly as she yawned and stretched at the same time. "Yep… I'm… awake…" Bluey said, slumping her head back down on the pillow.
"I too am awake, mum," Bingo said.
"Me… too…" Muffin replied.
Socks let out little whimpers, not wanting to wake up after her 3 hour nap.
"Socks, honey," Chilli said, "Why weren't you sleeping with Bingo or Muffin?"
Socks yawned, "Me and the girls were up all night trying to find what the Voice-" Socks closed her mouth tight when she saw the three girls wave their hands, telling her to shush. "I-I mean… we were.. looking for Bluey's lost book!" Socks gave her aunt a fake smile.
Chilli raised her eyebrow, "Socks? Is there something you're not telling me?"
"No, no! I'm telling the truth! W-Why would I lie?" Socks said as beads of sweat ran down her face.
Chilli just gave Socks a cold stare and continued speaking, "Anyways… all of us are going to the library because Bandit and I need to find a book that will help us… research something…"
"Really?! U-Uh, I mean, sure, why not?" Bluey said as she cleared her throat, trying to contain her excitement.
"But, this library is for grownups, so I'm gonna need you girls to behave yourselves, okay?" Chilli said, pointing at the Heeler girls.
"We promise!" They all said at once, their eyes gleaming in the process. Chilli gave the girls a small smile, "Alright, come down when you're all ready for breakfast." She said as she walked out the bedroom.
"Okay!" The girls respond as they wait for Chilli's footsteps to disappear.
"A grownup library is not what I had in mind…" Bingo said, sounding disappointed.
"I know, I know, but this is the perfect opportunity for us to find out what the Voice Of Good actually is!" Bluey exclaimed.
"But, what if we get caught?" Socks asked as she fidgeted her fingers, "Will we tell them the truth then?" Bingo, Muffin, and Socks all looked at Bluey, waiting for her answer.
"I…I-I guess we won't have a choice," Bluey answered.
"Can we go down stairs already? My stomach is growling!" Muffin groaned as she rubbed her belly.
"Oh, yeah, sorry girls, let's go and eat first, then we can talk about it on the way there." Bluey said to the girls as they walked out of the bedroom and headed downstairs.
After breakfast, the family of Heelers drove separately down the street to the library. On the way over, the Heeler girls whispered about their plans on their tablets.
"Okay, here's what we're gonna do," Bluey started, sounding serious, "First, we're gonna act bored, but we can't make it look fake or too obvious. Second, we're gonna say that we need to go for a wee, even though we don't really need to go. Third, without anyone realizing, we go and search the grownup books. If we can find what we're looking for, then maybe, just maybe, we can try to find the 'Voice Of Good' for ourselves! Sounds like a plan?"
"Yep!" The three girls whispered, giving Bluey a thumbs up.
"Put away your tablets girls, we're nearly at our destination!" Chilli said from the background of the girls' faceytime call.
"See you girls there!" Bluey said to Muffin and Socks before she ended the video call.
The two cars pulled up into the driveway slowly as Bandit and Stripe both tried to find a parking spot. Bandit had found a space nearest to the library entrance, though, there was another open spot right next to it. Bandit's eyebrows furrowed, knowing that his brother was going to park right next to him.
"Give it a rest, hun, what Stripe did to his house is now water under the bridge," Chilli whispered as she rubbed her husband's right arm.
"I don't care…" Bandit said, his voice dry.
When Bandit had finished parking, he and his family wasted no time getting out of the car. Bluey and Bingo were confused, wondering why their father was in such a hurry as well as wondering why he didn't want to wait on Muffin and Socks' family.
"Okay, now listen up," Bandit said, his voice sounding a bit happier, "Chilli and I are going to look for some grownup books. Meanwhile, you and your cousins are gonna sit over there." Bandit pointed over at four wooden seats, "There will be no talking, no smiling, no laughing, and especially, no games. Got that?"
"Yes, dad!" Bluey and Bingo said with a smile and they headed over towards the two seats. Before they had the time to sit down, their mum and dad had already disappeared in the maze of bookshelves.
"Psst, Bluey!" Muffin's voice called from the restrooms, signaling her and Bingo to come over.
"Muffin! Socks!" Bluey exclaimed as she and her sister ran over to their cousins. "Alright, girls, engage operation: Find Information About The Voice Of Good!"
Bluey, Bingo, Muffin, and Socks put their hands in the middle and shouted, "Woop, woop!" as they all lifted their hands in the air and ran into the maze of bookshelves.
